Shure Microphones: SM58-LC Cardioid Vocal and SM57-LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphones

Shure SM57-LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone

SM58-LC Cardioid Vocal Microphone

Two legendary, industry-standard microphones from Shure, and one might ask: what’s the difference between the two? These classic workhorses are actually built on the same inner-workings (cartridges), but it’s the grille design that differentiates the two. The SM57 features an “integral resonator/grille assembly,” and it is better suited for picking up instruments. Not to say that the microphone has not beed used to record vocals—it’s all about experimentation and what your ears hear, which brings us to the SM58. The round ball grille houses a built-in spherical wind & pop filter, which are important when breath and “pop” noises are in question. As you might have guessed, the SM58 is ideal for vocal applications (live, recordings, podcasts, etc), but again, the same logic applies: it’s ok to test out the microphone for non-vocal situations.
