this post serves multiple purposes,
first to remind you that dj eli’s highly anticipated volume of Money Lotion is coming out in the next 2 weeks:
also i figured it would be cool to get inside the head of this guy while resurrecting Record Check from the original-original Lab site…
so here’s the first one, look out I may go post some old school ones too, if you ever want to reference these, i’m going to put a link to them on the side bar. enjoy…
ps. if you want to do one, hit me up.
and now to eli…
Peter asked me to pick my ten favorite 12′s but lets’ face it, that is an unimaginable task. So here are ten records I love although I doubt one of them would make it in to my top ten…
1) Police – Voices Inside My Head/When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What’s Still Around
As luck would have it, the Police put their two most danceable songs on one juicy promo 12. I’ve come across this record twice in my life… both times at rock record stores and both times for under 5 dollars! Basically, before Serato, you needed this record cause both songs sound like ass on the album.
2) T LA Rock – Breaking Bells
Mantronix is an immeasurable influence on my own music and this is maybe my favorite beat they ever made. T La Rock kills it too… but yo, peep the dub. It’s insane.
3) Alter Ego – Rocker
I bought this record at Satellite back in 2004 I think. Now seeing how blog-house is all the rage, it seems obvious this record was a little ahead of its time. I really like the Eric Prydz remix. Apparently that dude can do more than just loop up Steve Windwood.
4) Human League – Keep Feeling Fascination
Oh man, I remember seeing the video for this when I was a kid and being blown away by the SOUND of it ironically. The synths all loud and distorted in the mix and the hard ass drums… this is synth pop perfection. The 12 inch remix is where it’s at for sure.
5) Big Bang Theory – God’s Child
This release on Defected from 2002 has the BBT Club Mix which is a loop from the song “Just As Long As I Got You” by disco group Law and Order with a preacher over it saying how he is God’s child. In other words, it rules.
6) Peter Godwin – Emotional Disguise
This is just a great track by some New Wave guy who unknowingly created a proto Techno classic. I’ve never heard the vocal version before… I assume it blows. DJ Technics sampled it for “Who’s In The House (NY Mix)” which I play almost every night.
7) Casual – That’s How It Is
The remix on this 12 is just unreal… I heard the original like once or twice and have since removed the memory completely. Sly Stone drums hitting crazy and some evil sounding bass loop is all it takes to completely reinvent an average song and make it a classic.
8) Ozo – Anambra
So for a while I was completely obsessed with David Mancuso and finding every record that he used to play at the Loft. When I found this one I thought it was a little weird but now it’s an all time fave. Real slow and hypnotizing disco record.
9) Stephanie Mills – You Can’t Run From My Love
Stephanie has such an amazing distinctive voice and Mtume’s production is so lush. This promo only remix gets real crazy in the middle though. Lots of dubbed out vocals and percussion. Right up my alley.
10) 33 Hz – Hot Flashes
This is just a great new disco track that always puts me in a good mood. Plus I think they’re from New York so it’s all good.
