Leon Michels & Danny Akalepse started Big Crown Records this year and has already built a solid catalog. Turntable Lab just received a crate of 7 inches, (and a 10″), starting w/ El Michels Affair‘s “4th Chamber”. The BK band released Enter The 37th Chamber in 2009, and it continues w/ covers of GZA & ODB for this 45. Next up is a repress of a super rare funk record from the early ’70s. It’s amazing that Soul Explosives was a high school band; the lo-fi funk of “Trying To Get Down” and it’s smashing cover of “Ain’t no Sunshine” is truly mind-blowing. The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band turns in some serious summertime vibes for the next 7″ as it covers Dennis Coffey’s “Scorpio” and Sugarhill Gang‘s “8th Wonder,” and Max Shrager’s “Thoughts of You” vinyl 10″ is a refreshing lo-fi rock/soul number from the up-and-coming NY producer/songwriter/musician. Boco’s “Running The Mardi Gras / Smile” 7″ is another sought-after southern soul classic reissued by Big Crown, and lastly, El Michels Affair links ups w/ NY cohorts The Shacks for more lo-fi rock/soul vibes that is “Strange Boy.”
