To prepare for Assault’s BK arrival, we asked him a few questions…
M: When you started producing what were the first pieces of gear you got?
A: Ensoniq ES-1 Keyboard, Akai S-1000 Sampler, and Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine.
M: How long have you been using the Rode NTK mic? Any other mics you
stand by or used to rock?
A: About 8 years of using the Rode other than that it would have been some type of Neumann mic.
M: Back in the days most producers in Detroit were making dance music
at 130bpm. How did you decide “lets crank this thing up to 150 bpms?”
A: In hind sight, it wasn’t really smart because it’s harder for people to dance for 2 hours at 150 bpm outside of Detroit. At the time I wasn’t thinking internationally it was just a Detroit thing. 20 minutes of dance music, 20 minutes of rap music at a Detroit party it went back and fourth.
M: How long have you been living in Atlanta? How does it compare to the D?
A: I never actually moved from Detroit I just never be there much any more. In Atlanta the weather is of course a lot warmer. I really don’t like snow to much. Plus Atlanta is really kind of laid back I just chill and work on music without a bunch of distractions.
M: Since 2008 have you talked to other people who’ve had similar problems with that DJ guy you pushed into the speakers when he showed disrespect?
A: No it kind of turned into a big joke for everyone who saw it. But that guy was way out of line so I pushed him back in. LOL!!!
M: Thanks! To see DJ Assault in the flesh, come out to The Cove tomorrow night. 106 N 6th Street Brooklyn NY. Admission is free with rsvp to: Nextnextah@gmail.com
