More Black Friday Record Store Day 2016 Bundle #4

Another solid bunch here, 2016 Black Friday RSD has proven to be super on point. “Moog For Love” from the UK brothers Disclosure is pressed on clear mint vinyl, and Death Grips’ instrumentals (Fashion Week and Interview 2016) are available physically for the first time. Prophets of Rage, the super rap-rock group consisting of Rage Against the Machine (Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, Brad Wilk), Public Enemy (Chuck D + DJ Lord) and Cypress Hill (B-Real) drops its debut EP, The Party’s Over, on very limited red vinyl pressing, and “human cartoon character” rapper Lil Yachty’s debut mixtape receives a fitting red vinyl pressing (dude has red beads, if you haven’t been following his explosive rise in 2016). The 1991 classic from Geto Boys, “My Mind is Playing Tricks on Me,” is offered on green vinyl (to raise awareness for mental health issues, proceeds will go to benefit the JED Foundation), and finally, Erykah Badu drops her first project in 5 years (But You Caint Use My Phone), with a dope cover of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” and more tracks that fuse hip-hop, r&b, jazz, and art rock in a way that only she can. All pressed in small quantities, so act quick!

Respect The Classics: 2Pac “2Pacalypse Now” Vinyl 2LP and The Roots “Illadelph Halftime” Vinyl 2LP Reissued

The Roots Illadelph Halftime Vinyl 2LP

With two albums under their belts, the legendary Roots crew released Illadelph Halflife in 1996. The samples-meets-live-instrumentation sound is truly something the Philly icons owned, and this is the LP that really opened up the group’s sound to a wider audience. Couple Questlove, Kamal, Hub, Rahze, and Scratch’s music with lyrics from Black Thought, it’s no coincidence that songs like “Section,” “Clones,” “It Just Don’t Stop,” and “UNIverse at War” still band after 20 years. Much respect to the Respect The Classics series for repressing this hip-hop classic.

2Pac 2Pacalypse Now Vinyl 2LP

Another addition to the Respect The Classics series is the debut album from 2Pac. Originally released in 1991, this year marks the 25th anniversary of 2Pacalpyse Now, the album that highlights the late MC’s views on racism, poverty, teenage pregnancy, police brutality, and other societal ills. ‘Pac would go on to personify the “THUG LIFE” that he is more often associated with due to the subject matter of his subsequent works, but in songs like “Trapped,” “I Don’t Give A Fuck,” “Soulja’s Story,” and “Brenda’s Got A Baby,” the rap great offers a sharp, retaliative message toward real issues that are, unfortunately, still relevant today. A certified hip-hop classic without a doubt, and we’re glad to see a 180g reissue of the album.

Three Albums from Drake on Vinyl LP Available Now

Drake Take Care Vinyl 2LP

Drake on vinyl??? “HYFR.” Three releases from rap’s biggest name (arguably) are available on wax now, starting with 2011’s multi-platinum album Take Care. Enlisting producers like Jamie XX, the LP marks a defining moment of Champagne Papi’s moody, r&b and electronica-informed style, and huge hits like “Take Care,” “Marvins Room,” and “Headlines” continue to softly bang hard (you know how them Drake tracks go).

Drake If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late Vinyl 2LP

How is this just a “mixtape”? It’s certified 2x platinum now, and it’s filled with a ton of crossover hits that most artists dream of just making one of in their careers. Anyway, from the smooth, low-end heavy beats that leave plenty of room for Drizzy’s verses to lines like “I was running through the 6 w/ my woes” (the mid-song, shouted version, not that soft ish in the beginning), If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late outperformed many proper “albums” and ended up on many “Best of…” lists. 10 bands!

Drake & Future What A Time To Be Alive Vinyl LP

Just 6 days in ATL, and Drake & Future create this tape that perfectly captures the current vibe of the rap game. Fun 16s from Aubrey, Purp-influenced (supposedly) drawl bars from the Free Band Gang rapper, plus snappy beats from Metro Booming work together to create monster hits like “Jumpman,” “Digital Dash,” “Big Rings,” and “I’m The Plug.” You’ve probably listened to this project a million times (more according to Spotify), and now you can enjoy it on vinyl. What a Time To Be Alive (sounded so much better before the election)!

4AD Day of the Dead – Great Dead Tribute Vinyl 10LP Boxset

4AD Day of the Dead – Grateful Dead Tribute Colored Vinyl 10LP Boxset

4 years in the making, and the colossal Grateful Dead tribute is finally here. A visually striking vinyl 10LP boxset, the trippy, marbled pressings hold more than 50 tracks recorded by artists like The National (the release was curated by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of the band), Cass McCombs, The Flaming Lips, Charles Bradley, Menahan Street Band, Anohni, Angel Olsen, and more, and it represents the vast songwriting and experimental spirit of The Grateful Dead w/ extras like individual color sleeve, outer flip-top box, and a full-color poster. Certainly a welcome addition to any Dead Head’s collection!

Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein “Stranger Things Vol. 1” Soundtrack Vinyl 2LP Available in 3 Different Colors

Kyle Dixon & Miahcel Stein Stranger Things Vol. 1 Soundtrack Vinyl 2LP

The Netflix smash that captivated many, and here is the music that played such a crucial part in the sci-fi greatness of it all. Survive (they just dropped an album, RR7349) is the name of the band, and two members (Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein) from it worked their analog-synth magic to cook up retro soundscapes that perfectly complemented the ’80s setting of the show. Stranger Things Vol. 1 Soundtrack is available now in three different colors, clear, clear black smoke, and black, but the biggest question remains, IS ELEVEN ALIVE OR DEAD?

Undergroundup: Deep and Sought-After New Releases + Reissues From the Underground

Young Male “Hot For Destiny And The Street” Vinyl 12″

A variety of goods from the underground just hit the our NEWLY DESIGNED site, including this Young Male release on White Material. The producer/dj is a co-founder of the respected NYC/Berlin label, and “Hot For Destiny And The Street” is a heavy techno workout w/ the gritty “Grey Gotham” and ambient “Drug Deal Video’s” rounding out the 12″.

There are also 4 reissues from Detroit’s Mike Huckaby that are available now, and leading the pack is “The Versatility EP” Vinyl 12“, which packs two potent mid-90s Motor City techno essentials. Also from the Deep Transportation / S Y N T H head are Harmonie Park Classics Vol.1 and Vol.2, which consist of groovy Detroit/disco house burners that have been out of print for some time. Lastly, “Baseline 88-89″ Vinyl 12” is another must-have reissue, with heavy bass, jacking rhythms, and plenty of Detroit vibes.

ROCHE “Sity To Sky EP” Vinyl 12″

Next up is a twisted, psychedelic house release from ROCHE. “Sity To Sky EP” Vinyl 12” is all about lush pads, low-slung, tribal drums, and even some saxophone work courtesy of Ash Williams, and shouts to the San Francisco producer for continuing to add quality, inventive joints to his growing catalog.

Snorre Magnar Solberg & Kristoffer Drevdal lead off the next batch of underground must-pick-ups. Representing Norway, the duo gets hypnotic and murky on “No-No 4″ Vinyl 12”, and we’re feeling the experimental, trippy house vibe that drives two sides of the vinyl. Next up is a CLASSIC New York City jam from 1987 courtesy of Arnold Jarvis. “Take Some Time Out” Vinyl 12″ introduced the man’s voice to the world, and the original version is complemented by a potent remix courtesy of Ilija Rudman. Following up is another deep, ambient techno business from Sydney’s Thug Records, as label head Zarate_Fix & DJ Sotofett link up for “Planetary Involvement” Vinyl 12″. Rounding out this group is a sexy boogie number out of San Diego. Adam Chini crushes it for his debut release on Hobo Camp, with “Don’t Tempt Me / Let The Night Slip Away” Vinyl 7″ coming correct with that fat low-end and dope chord and synth solos.

DJ Ice Tits “Songs About Myrtle Ave.” Vinyl 12″

You gotta love the name, and the music doesn’t disappoint on this one. COLD techno cuts that explore the deeper realms of the genre from the mysterious DJ Ice Tits! “Songs About Myrtle Ave.” packs in 5 impressive tracks that will satisfy those of you that dig dub/ambient soundscapes and meticulous drum programming.

And on to the last pack of this brolic undergroundup (ha)… Jamma-Dee turns in some smoove r&b & boogie joints on Vol.2 Vinyl 12″ (peep “I Feel Lucky”), followed by Olin’s “Huerco S. Remixes” Vinyl 12″. Giegling has been releasing top-notch material as of late, and this heady, atmospheric techno joint from the BK producer is no exception. Next release is also from the German label, and it’s an essential repress of DJ Metatron’s “2 The Sky” Vinyl 12″. Influenced by early trance and 90s electronic music, the record looks back at early days of house, and it’s important to note that the 12″ sold out immediately upon its initial release. Giegling comes through once again for the next record: Kettenkraussell’s “Easy Listening Remixes” Vinyl 12″. This one collects 4 reworks of tracks from the German duo’s 2014 debut Easy Listening, and more dub techno and abstract house revisions ensue.

Nina Simone LPs from Phillips Years…

Nina Simone In Concert Vinyl LP

4 albums Nina Simone recorded for Phillips Records just hit the site. The iconic singer-songwriter’s debut release for the label was 1964’s Nina Simone In Concert, which features three live performances recorded at New York’s Carnegie Hall. The LP is widely recognized as the kickoff point for Ms. Simone’s career trajectory as a “Civil Rights singer,” and songs like “Mississippi Goddam,” “Old Jim Crow,” “Go Limp,” and “Pirate Jenny” clearly showcase her influence as one of the most outspoken, politically charged artists of her generation.

Nina Simone I Put a Spell on You Vinyl LP

In 1965, Ms. Simone released her third album for Phillips Records, and I Put A Spell On You stands one of the highlights of her prolific discography. The title track is a cover of Scremin’ Jay Hawkins’ song, and numbers like Jacques Brel’s “Ne Ne Quitte Pas” and “Feeling Good” are perhaps some of her best known recordings.

Nina Simone Wild Is The Wind Vinyl LP

A year later, Nina Simone recorded her 6th studio effort for Phillips Records, and the album consists of unused sessions she worked on for the label up ’til then. Wild Is The Wind is marked by the diversity of styles it covers: jazz ballads, traditional folk tunes, and even some calypso-informed numbers fill up the album.

Nina Simone High Priestess of Soul Vinyl LP

The last of the recent Nina Simone arrivals at Lab is her ’67 album High Priestess of Soul. Hal Mooney worked on the album and incorporated big-band-style arrangements and soul music trends of the mid ’60s, but some of the strongest moments of the LP come from Ms.Simone’s more poignant materials, such as the deeply spiritual “Come Ye.”

Nina Simone Albums on Vinyl LP available at Turntable Lab now.
