New Arrivals from Big Crown Records

Big Crown Records Releases Available at Turntable Lab Now

maxshrager-thoughtsofyouboco-runningthemardi (1)elmichelsaffair-strangeboy (1)

Leon Michels & Danny Akalepse started Big Crown Records this year and has already built a solid catalog. Turntable Lab just received a crate of 7 inches, (and a 10″), starting w/ El Michels Affair‘s “4th Chamber”. The BK band released Enter The 37th Chamber in 2009, and it continues w/ covers of GZA & ODB for this 45. Next up is a repress of a super rare funk record from the early ’70s. It’s amazing that Soul Explosives was a high school band; the lo-fi funk of “Trying To Get Down” and it’s smashing cover of “Ain’t no Sunshine” is truly mind-blowing. The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band turns in some serious summertime vibes for the next 7″ as it covers Dennis Coffey’s “Scorpio” and Sugarhill Gang‘s “8th Wonder,” and Max Shrager’s “Thoughts of You” vinyl 10″ is a refreshing lo-fi rock/soul number from the up-and-coming NY producer/songwriter/musician. Boco’s “Running The Mardi Gras / Smile” 7″ is another sought-after southern soul classic reissued by Big Crown, and lastly, El Michels Affair links ups w/ NY cohorts The Shacks for more lo-fi rock/soul vibes that is “Strange Boy.”

Bunch of Spiritualized Albums Available at Turntable Lab Now…

Spiritualized debuted with Lazer Guided Melodies in 1992, and the band’s experimental sound that drew from kraut, shoegaze, and psych would go on to influence many acts (Sparklehorse and Deerhunter come to mind). The UK group’s 7-album catalog has consistently explored noise and ambience-driven space rock territories, and here are three releases that perfectly highlight Spiritualized’s aesthetic.

Spiritualized Pure Phase 180g Vinyl 2LP

The second album from Jason Pierce & co., originally released in 1995. Probably the most shoegaze-influenced album from Spiritualized and includes songs like “Lay Back in the Sun,” “Electric Mainline,” and “Spread Your Wings.” Check it out here.

Spiritualized Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

Third and perhaps the most critically acclaimed album from Spiritualized, originally released in 1997. The shoegaze influence is still apparent, but Pierce draws from a much wider palette for Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space, collaborating with the famed Balanescu Quartet, the London Community Gospel Choir, and the blues/r&b/rock & roll legend Dr. John. There is a lot going on in the album, but Pierce manages to keep it cohesive.

Spiritualized Sweet Heart, Sweet Light

The 7th album from Spiritualized, Sweet Heart, Sweet Light, was originally released in 2012. Jason Pierce recorded it while going through chemotherapy, and the tracks deal with familiar themes like religion, drugs, sickness, and redemption. Full orchestral backing + choirs give Pierce’s interpretation of rock a gospel-like edge; check out “Hey Jane,” “Little Girl,” and “I Am What I Am.”
