Sorry for blowing up the blog with big flyers Pete, but when an exceptional DJ/Producer is coming to town for his stateside debut, i gotta let heads know. Tomorrow night The Revenge will be here all the way from his native home in Scottland, and i really can't say enough good things about the dude. I can tell you his edits (or reworks rather) and original productions, continually sell out at the NY store. Let's just say there's been plenty of great DJs that have left the record store unhappy because they slept on a new dope Revenge vinyl release. If you can make it out tomorrow, you will definitely see me there. As a matter of fact, i gave up a gig just to check this dude!! As for the location, it's in my hood in Do or Die Bed Stuy underneath the J line stop at Broadway/Myrtle. And did i mention, the sound system is bangin in this place! Real grimey loft style aesthetic and it goes til' real late so hope to see you out mates!

Btw-Here's an interview with the man, and also his really great Resident Advisor mix. One of my recent favorites. Hope you enjoy it as much as i do!

I've been reading Vince Aletti's Disco Files , and this passage stood out to me:

"A Rather appalling little item appeared recently about a chain of steak restaurants that were turning themselves into discotheques. The chain's headquarters in Rockland, Maryland (disco central, right?), makes up a weekly list of 30 records which are supplied to DJ's at each location, supplemented by basic collections of another 100 current "disco" records and 100 "oldie" dance cuts. The DJ's, who
are trained by the parent company, can play only those records on the lists and
are expected to program the top 30 two or three times in the course of a night.
Records by specially-spotlighted "artists of the month", also chosen in Rockland,
are programmed every 45 or 60 minutes in each of the locations in the chain.
Clearly, disco Djing is the glamor, no experience necessary profession of the year, but is this what it's coming to? The best DJ's - a number of whom were
making record-to-record collages and brilliant musical connections years before the media discovered the disco phenomenon, years before many of us were ready to hear them - are artists, tastemakers, shaping the immediate environment with their music. God knows all those people out there at their double turntables are not cruising the same heights of creativity but, until now, they haven't been reduced to playlist automatons. With discotheques becoming Big Business, the "disco" chain, run like a fast-food empire or a string of laundromats, could be the next major move. If it is, count me out."

In a world of corporate nightlife, DJ Hero, and samelist DJ's, I thought that excerpt was particularly relevant, even if its 35 years old.

is it too late to post halloween pics? Jemz as someone from Heathcliff... his girl hand-made the outfit... what you'll do for love.

what you'll do for love pt.2: wear white tights... that's frogman on the right as Ghost Of Grimace.

most convincing costume goes to Lloyd for his Soul Glo heir Coming To America costume.

it's always amusing when i go to other cities like DC, where everyone locks their bike with a U-lock... been noticing a lot more stolen bikes in nyc these days, dudes walking around with like 5 front tires ("I keep on finding em!" - someone really said that.)

ny also has some ridiculous scavengers. there was a used toilet on the street in the ev this chinese dood looted all the interior parts.... really?

from gross to goodness... the only food thing in Dumbo worth visiting for Almondine bakery (and maybe Grimaldi's)... almond croissant = the beautiful ugly.

recently tried grilled fish egg sack at a midtown japanese robata... weird.

type of the moment: at the hand therapist (i hurt my thumb), i spotted these flip books with incredible covers... you might see the design copied in the near future (by me).

been hitting up Jazz At Lincoln Center a bunch recently... the program there is incredible and super-accessible. it takes the pain out of going to see jazz (jazz clubs are cramped, overpriced, and too hectic). there's multiple venues within the TWC, so you can see jazz in a club setting (Dizzy's), ampitheater style, or concert style... and it's not that expensive... caught Maceo Parker this past weekend, guy is pretty amazing. highly recommended. more info.
