NYC! Tonite!
The Danger is doing a very large Brooklyn warehouse party.
Entrance is at 195 Morgan ave.
The first warehouse is 3 floors, with one of them boasting 150 cubic feet of false snow, among other things.
The second warehouse is 2 floors, with the upstairs featuring a 7000 square foot dance floor. (i'll be djing there midnight 'til 2am)
The other details I have been told about what will go on inside are quite over the top, I think it's more fun if you just come and see.
9pm-7am only $29 pay cash on the door.
have a good one !

On the occasion of the release of Sabo's new EP on Bersa Discos, I hit up one of the Lab cornerstones to see what he's up too. Also Sabo did a digital chart you can check it here

sabointerview-0.jpg

so what have you been up to since you stepped down as TTL store manager?

i traveled a bunch in september and ocotber since i finally now had Sundays off. Dj'ed a wedding in a castle in Portugal, skated and partied til sunrise for a few days in Barcelona, Dj'ed in Madrid,  went to Playa del Carmen for 3 day house music festival,  and hit SF and LA to Dj release parties for the my Bersa EP, and hit up Puerto Rico to start a new monthly there.
Beyond that I've been settling into my new apartment, and trying to work on production and remixes.

sabointerview-05.jpg

is it hard to try to produce music full-time? isn't it easy to fall in to times where you'll just go skating or hang out with some chick?

Yea when the sun is shining I just wanna go shred and hang out, or as Roc would say "go trollin". Producing is definitely not easy, at least for me, cause I always think it could sound "better",  and it takes me a long time to be happy with the final mixdown.  I'm slowly getting a better routine down, and with winter on the way, I plan to travel less and just hibernate in front of my computer. Not owning a TV definitely helps too....

sabo-store.jpg

what are some of your best memories working in the NY store?

I think the time Afrika Bambaata came in the shop was probably one of the coolest for me. He had a bomber jacket on that said "UFO's are Real" on the back.  I spent an hour playing him records out loud in the store, and he was dancing going "yea i'll take 2 of those, let me get 2 of those...". He spent over $500 on vinyl, and signed a record for me. I fanned out big time for him. Other cool "celebrity sightings for me at the shop were Kenny Dope, Danny Krivit, Mr V, Jealous J, Q-tip, and of course Biz Markie. Biz only wanted 45s and when I asked him if he signed the Biz doll that Kenny Dope bought, he replied "Yea, I got mad dolls." Aside from that I just miss, hanging with the Lab heads talking shit, and hearing all the latest nightlife gossip.

it must feel awesome to DJ at Turntables On The Hudson, what's the whole experience like?

Yea in it's heyday on the Frying Pan, that party was the bomb. There would be over 1000 people there every Friday night, and it was outdoors in the summer, with only like 2 security guys, who were homies anyway, so people were free to drink, smoke, and indulge in whatever they chose, totally hassle free. The crowd was very ethnically  mixed, somewhat bohemian, with lots of Europeans, and of course, always tons of ladies. People really danced too, and just freakin let loose, especially when the live percussion kicked in. I really felt like we were "breaking" records at that party cause every week I'd always try to come with the latest new banger, or Nicko or Mariano would play some crazy new shit, and everyone would flip out. I dj'ed there on my birthday one year - Pete and Jasper came out that night - it was insane. I was chugging Mezcal straight out of the bottle and blazing spliffs on stage while Djing and people were going crazy. I lost my cellphone and digital camera that night, but had one of the best sets of my life. I spent many a Saturday morning watching the sun come up over New Jersey out on that pier. Unforgettable to say the least.

sabo-dancer.jpg

you used to DJ at old school Boston raves, what was that all about? didn't know Boston had raves... where those kids on drugs?

Man the Northeast - not just Boston - had a crazy Rave scene. We would travel to Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Boston, Vermont, even down to NYC sometimes - all for these illegal parties. Back then police didn't really know what was up as far as the amount of drugs being sold and taken (there was A LOT), so promoters could throw parties in town convention halls, civic centers, and other huge public spaces where that shit would NEVER be allowed today. The sound systems were massive, and the parties would go til 7 or 8am, and then there'd always be an after party at another insane location, til like 3pm the next day. Beyond all the horrible clothes and fashion we used to rock, I will say that the music was fucking incredible. And there is nothing more fun dropping "Higher State of Consciousness" - the week it came out - for 1500 kids on Ecstasy in a dark warehouse.

sabointerview-04.jpg

word on the streets is that you're a Cassanova when it comes to the ladies... any tips for our lady-challenged blog readers?

smile and say hello to at least 10 new girls a day. chances are at least 1 out 10 is gonna smile back. if she does, you're in, and will quickly forget about the 9 who gave you a dirty look.

you always seem to know the food spots in East Village, what your 5 favorite spots to eat there?

Right now my faves are:
Frank / Lil Frankies for Italian (all the homies still work there)
Caracas Arepas Bar (must try the special Chupe soup)
Cafecito (best Cuban around, try the Elena Ruz sandwich)
Barrio Chino (not one bad dish on the menu, lately I've been feeling the Chile En Nogada)
Minca (way better ramen than Satagaya )
and honorable mention to Senor Pollo (super cheap Peruvian rotisserie chicken spot that Pete put me on to)

flashback, what are your 5 favorite tracks pre-2000?

wow that's pretty impossible to narrow down, but here's 5 songs that i love and still play out...

Charanga 76 "No Nos Pararan"
Murk - "Get Some Loving"
River Ocean "Love and Happiness"
Jungle Brothers "Sounds of the Safari"
Dubtribe Sound System "Equatorial"

Last night at the Lab holiday party we were talking about stuff that never made it onto the blog this year (including the pictures of the time that I ate an entire apple pie baked by Tony for lunch, but I digress), and I remembered the story of The Other Ross and the mysterious Staple shirt. Back in May, we got in this shirt from Staple and I knew that it was an obscure reference to something, but Google was no help so as a joke I told people to email Snackmaster if they thought they knew what it was, and we would let them write a blog post if they were right (which is hardly any kind of prize). The response was overwhelming, we had way more emails about the shirt than we'd ever had for any other contest. Every person who fielded a guess was wrong with the exception of one person: Ross Maupin. Ross explained that the artwork on the shirt was the very same as a live LP recored by Sly, Slick & Wicked called Get Down.

slyslickwicked.jpg

I emailed him to let him know he'd won and to claim his prize, thinking we'd get some Boy Genius-esque rant to post. Instead, Ross turned out a really fantastic record check of obscure soul records from Colorado, complete with Lab style mp3 audio samples! It totally blew our minds that he went to such lengths for this here blog. Somehow, it got lost in the shuffle and never made it onto the site, until now. Here's Ross' record check, sorry it took so long buddy! - Hires

Hello world / blogosphere-

I am indeed the geek that cracked the code on the source for the Staple shirt that was added last week. As a result I was invited to do a post. My first instinct was to use this opportunity for shameless self-promotion, but that is corny and too obvious.

Instead, since my prowess as a record nerd got me this far, I thought I'd complete the circle with a little 'Record Check' light. So here are a handful of soul joints from my home state of Colorado that I've turned up over the last 13 years of digging, but that I haven't seen anyone really talking about. CO doesn't get a lot of shine when it comes to records aside from maybe a few folk cuts that have been comped, so here is my attempt to get a rep. This isn't everything that is out there, just a little 101 class.

01. Freddi / Henchi & The Soulsetters - Popcorn Baby (1969) Listen
These cats have the most prolific output from CO, including a pretty sought after LP and somewhere around seven 45s. I've seen these dudes live as recently as 2004 and they still got it.

02. The Denver Affair - Crawdad Hole (1970) Listen
Even though the name of the band is The Denver Affair they are from Fort Collins, which is happens to be where I grew up. I have also found an LP from this group but it is extra corny and it sounds nothing like this 45, which makes it a bit of a mystery to me. For the record: we definitely had crawdads in Fort Collins, but I don't know anyone who actually ate them. Yikes.

03. Sasa Di - We Stand United - (1974) Listen
A bit of harmony soul on the same label that put out that Chirco LP. Positive message and pretty ill production from a cat that I believe was working with Denver native Philip Bailey before he split to join EWF. Haven't found any trace of recorded material from that match-up, but fingers crossed something will turn up.

04. Zion Crusaders - Born Again - (1977) Listen
This is from a gospel LP that is amazing from start to finish. It was tough to pick a single track to share. For all the local gospel LPs I've turned up over the years, this is one of about 4 that are listenable, and among those this is my favorite. The drummer / guitarist / producer from this group has done a lot of gospel work and went on to record a really crazy LP in '84.

05. Stratus - Give it Up - (1980) Listen
This is from a 12" that has just 2 songs on it. The picture sleeve is perfect for CO, with the multi-culti members of the band posing in front of snowy pine trees and looking a little cowboy. Not sure why this one isn't more sought after.

06. Eugene Haywood - Booty Boppin' - (1980) Listen
This LP is on a label from Boulder, CO. It has a mixture of soul and some reggae touches, and is a little odd overall. The weirdest song by far is a soul cover of... Sweet Home Alabama. Seriously.

07. Gary Wilson - Stopped Stepping Around - (1983) Listen
No, not that Gary Wilson. This is the Denver Gary Wilson who recorded a rather uneven soul album in '83. Some of the tracks were clearly recorded at a weak studio (kind of like the Nashville Depoe LP on Guinness), but the majority sound like this. I'm not that up on Modern Soul, but this seems to fit the bill nicely for me. I wonder why this isn't a modern Holy Grail that French dudes are knocking down my door to get. What's the deal France?

08. Jabneel - In My Life - (1986) Listen
This is my #2 Colorado gospel record. Love the break and the bassline that opens this track. Crazy story with this LP. The infamous TripleDouble of AEIOU fame came through Denver back in 2000. We had some digging adventures, including learning all about why prostitutes from Guatemala (aka The Guat) are the best in the world from this cat at a secret spot in the mountains. TripleDouble is good people and the Force is very strong with him. He got to a stack of KMP LPs before I did and he found this Jabneel LP at a spot that is literally across the street from the house. My ego was a little bruised, but earlier this spring I finally found it in a horrible garage that smelled like pee (because someone had peed in it, I assume), and it was sealed, and now all is well. If you catch this T*ny, Leah says 'hi'.

09. XXXXXXXXXXX - Trying To Teach - (1970) Listen
This 45 is nasty. As good as anything from CO. And I haven't actually found a copy of it yet. My friend Mike turned this up and hit me with a CD-R, so its a secret for now.

Peace.
- the other Ross

NEW TURNTABLE LAB X SCION RADIO

(click box)

This month's guest...

benji-b.jpg

BENJI B

I was really happy to finally get Benji over here to play the radio show. His show on BBC's 1Xtra was the first internet radio show i remember. My neighbor (this British dude) had like the fastest dial-up possible so I would go over his house every week and drinks some beers and listen. To be honest Benji's show hasn't really changed after all these years I think the times have just begun to catch up with him (but he's still way ahead of most of us). I've been introduced to everything from these new beat kids to Underground Resistance to all sorts of Broken Beats via his show.

Anyway listen to the show, he played some crazy beats I hadn't heard and some Funky UK stuff I'm currently trying to catch up on. After that make sure you check out his show every Sunday (I think the next episode he has J Rocc playing Christmas shit) and make sure you check his live gigs when he's around, not only does he smash it but the chicks come out in droves for this guy (i call him the underground Ronson).

IN OTHER SCION A/V RADIO NEWS

The creative minds at Scion A/V have tapped your boy for yet another iPhone App video...

Scion A/V Radio App Tutorial from Scion A/V on Vimeo.

I'm actually amped they finally got this one out. It allows you to listen to my radio show from any iPhone or iPod Touch. I put a lot work into these shows (as do the other host/djs), SO PLEASE LISTEN UP!!!

Next month I got KNIGHTLIFE as my guest so stay tuned...

Not So Everlasting Bass:

Miles Erwin - 9th December, 2009 Share|
Loud bass music ‘killed student’ Tom Reid

A student collapsed at a freshers’ party and died after complaining
the loud bass music was ‘getting to his heart’, an inquest heard yesterday.
Tom Reid, 19, was taken ill in a crowded London club
after standing close to the speakers and telling a friend
: ‘The bass is affecting me.’

There was no trace of alcohol or drugs in his body
and his heart was in good condition.

A coroner recorded a verdict of natural causes,
saying the straight-As student
was killed by sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS),
a heart disorder which kills 12 young people a week.

Cardiac experts said the bass could have triggered SADS
if Mr Reid had underlying, yet unknown, genetic problems.

On September 27, he had gone to Koko nightclub in Camden,
north London, for the party, dubbed Night Of Mayhem.

His friend Alisha Riseley told the inquest they
were pushed towards the speakers.
She added: ‘Tom said he felt like the bass was getting
to his heart and we went to stand at the back.’

He told her: ‘My heart feels funny. I think the bass is affecting me.
Oh God, I feel very weird. My heart is beating so fast.’

They went to see the club medic but, while Mr Reid considered
whether to call an ambulance, he collapsed.
‘He suddenly leant to the side and keeled over as though he fainted,’
Ms Riseley told St Pancras coroner Dr Andrew Reid.

Paramedics tried to restart his heart but
within two hours he was declared dead in hospital.

Dr Reid said: ‘I hope some lessons may be learnt from his tragic death.’

Ellen Mason, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation,
said: ‘Some genetic conditions that cause SADS can be triggered
by stress or noise. He was suddenly exposed to a lot of loud noise
and it’s highly possible that this caused the attack.’

Black Jesus is back in the illadelph!!

Having lived in Philly for five years (what up to Mad Decent, Undrcwn, Mitchell & Ness, Ubiq and who ever else wants to send me shit), the Sixers and Black Jesus hold a special part of my heart. I always thought Iverson would end his career and die for the Sixers (literally dying for the Sixers, not just a figure of speech). I solely blame Billy King and Ed Snider for how it was all treated at the end. If Pat Croce was the owner of the Sixers, Iverson might be Mayor by now. (Shout out to Mayor Nutter, I see you playboy). Anyways, The Sixers are 2nd from last in attendance (how can that be!?!?!?!), at least the man is going to be around his real fans. If this doesnt work out, he should come back home and be an assistant coach for Georgetown.

Side note:
Occasionally, Boy Genius feels the need to drop some science on you suckas, not everything is a funny pic or video. With this whole Tiger Woods shit coming out, it makes me laugh. Why? Cause every single athlete the world looks up to cant, and never will, live up to their clean PR-built image of being a hero, or inspirational. No one is man enough to be real. We, as the public, fall victim to these false images these athletes throw up, we really believe these guys are 'nice' or 'honest' or 'model citizens'. These people we worship and idolize turn out to be scum in real life. Kobe, Tiger, Jordan and LeBron (not yet, but any day now). At the end of the day, do you know who stands tallest as a man?

(doing the McCain finger point) "That one....."

ai_5.jpg

His only crime was being too real. He was "too black" and came into the NBA 10 years too early. Players like Delonte West and Michael Beasley today, despite their troubles, are regarded as 'Talented, young basketball rising stars', and not "thugs" or "gangsters" or "ghetto". Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley arent trashing these players for 'showing no respect' or 'class'. Shame on all you haters.

We all owe Allen Iverson a standing O in every arena this man walks into,
I cant wait to see him visit the Staples Center.

On the occasion of the release of Mike 2600's new EP on Crossfaded Bacon, I hit him up for some insight into his world. Also, Mike also picked a digital chart to go along with the interview, you can peep that here

you've been down with the Lab since as long as I can remember. how did that happen?

During the summer of 1999, I put together a mixtape on my 4-track recorder called Yars' Revenge - an hour of rock breaks (does anyone even know what those are anymore?) and excessive amounts of primitive scratching with plenty of comedy bits, Temple of Doom snippets, and WWF interview segments thrown in. Oh it also featured rap verses created entirely with the "Text to Speech" function on the Mac Simple Text program. I sent a copy to Turntable Lab (back in the era when the focus was scratch records, funk & breaks compilations, and DJ mixtapes) and never heard anything until one year later when someone (anyone remember who?) called me and wanted to order about 20 of them. From there, you guys ordered more and then continued to order more of my mixtapes and CDs and then you started letting me write product reviews and put things on your blog.

how did this release on Crossfaded Bacon come about?

Emynd and I have known each other for a while. I've been a fan of his music and mixes and vice-versa. Bird Peterson and I asked him to contribute a song to the Do it To it vol 2 vinyl EP we put out for SXSW earlier this year. Crossfaded Bacon started off as an outlet for Emynd and Bo Bliz to release their own tracks and promote their parties, but in recent months, it's grown into more of a home for Emynd to get other music out into the world. Scott Matelic's EP and the Roundhead EP are both super good. When I was asked to do an EP, I thought it would have to be all Baltimore Club. I didn't want to end up cranking out some middle-of-the-road, cookie cutter Bmore stuff that I wasn't even excited about, so I took a chance and sent in a rough version of "Now Here's a Funky Beat," based on some music I put together for my friend's fashion show earlier this year. I got the green light and got to work finishing up the rest of the music and was lucky to have Emynd and Scott Matelic knock out some great remixes.

if you will, what are some of the samples you used?

It's kinda all over the place - Fatback Band, Derek B (rest in peace), Jimi Entley, Cross & Switchblade soundtrack, The Beach Boys, "Style Wars."

it's impressive how you and Wes have grown Burlesque over the years. can you list 5 tips for people who are aspiring to open their own design entity?

It's been a pretty exciting ride so far. My tips:
- Be ready to do some work for free / for trades. You can't expect to start making stacks of cash right from the get-go. You need to build your portfolio and start building relationships with clients and that will sometimes mean doing work in exchange for food / products / handshakes / other things that don't pay rent.
- Keep track of your hours and the work you do. Having all of your shit organized is beyond important.
- Learn how to work with clients. They're not all going to approve the first thing you send them, they're not going to send you all of the information you need when you need it, they're going to make changes at the last second. You need to figure out the best way to deal with these things so that it's fair for you and also fair for them.
- Keep in touch with people. Most of my best projects have falled in my lap just from bumping into someone at a restaurant or randomly deciding to email an old friend or client.
- Learn the difference between graphic design and art. Every project doesn't need to be a chance for you to express yourself and try the newest Photoshop trick you just learned. Same goes with DJing - just because you got a bunch of facemelter bro dubstep mp3s doesn't mean you need to spin them out right at your next gig for no reason at all.

speaking of jobs, what are some of the interesting non-design jobs you've held down?

I started working as a graphic designer right out of college and to be honest there wasn't too much super interesting before that - I worked at a copy shop where I was able to run off tons of mixtape covers, flyers, and stickers without having to pay for them and I worked at a summer camp where my brother and I made up stupid music games for kids to do.

i know you like to collect things, what are you collecting these days?

My most recent kick has been postage stamps from the '60s, '70s, and '80s. They're like tiny little posters and they've introduced me to some incredible graphic design work from all over the world.

what are some of your favorite things you've come across in your thrift store hunts?

I'm mainly looking for graphic design books and old weird stuff with cool '70s packaging or logos on it. I was stuck in Bloomington-Normal IL for a few days and found this great book of drink recipes from 1969 with crazy psychedelic illustrations all throughout it.

you still collecting records? if so, what types of records do you look for?

I've slowed down with the obsessive collecting but am still picking up disco 12"s and oddball rap records. I'm looking for Israeli psych and funk records but have only had moderate luck in Minneapolis. I guess a trip to Israel needs to happen soon.

top 5 things about Minneapolis?

Prince
Getting to see all four seasons in full effect
Lots of people young & old who support good music and the arts
Minnesota State Fair
The Jucy Lucy

top 5 12"s of the moment?

Here are 5 12"s I've ripped into my computer recently...
MC Twist & The Def Squad "Shock the House"
Stereo MCs "Connected"
Alfonzo "You Are the One" / "Lowdown"
The 06 Style "Get it Going"
Tricky Tee "I've Got it Good"

Also super feelin' my man BK-One's "Tema Do Canibal" - a track he did with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble off of his "Radio do Canibal" LP.

top 5 things to eat?

It's hard to pick five all-time favorites, so here are five recent things I've really enjoyed eating.

1. Thanksgiving

2. Indian lamb curry stew with sweet potato and parsnips.

3. Tea Leaf Salad from Burma Superstar in San Francisco. I'm normally not big on salads at all, but this is some next level delicious shit.

4. Sting Ray from Sanur Malaysian & Indonesia restaurant in Chinatown.

5. In-N-Out

i'm guessing you like asian girls, am I right?

I've been accused of this enough times that I suppose it's true.
