the last angle of the Lab triumvirate tied the knot this month
so the crew headed down to Houston to pay respects to one known as Frogman aka Tuffskins

woggins-wedding.jpg
weddings aren't meant to be blogged about on blogs like this so we'll keep that part short.

woggins-piersons1.jpg
boy genius scouted our mandatory Houston BBQ Experience and he picked the right place, Piersons! The place looked like a closed gas station from the outside, but once you enter, you smell the smoke, and you're greeted by warm smiles. this is a picture of the free sampler they give you before you order, so you know exactly what you want. they don't do that in new york.

woggins-piersons2.jpg
i wanted all three, so i got what they call the "Trinity" : sliced brisket, smoked sausage, and ribs. Did I mention food is hella cheap in Houston. At my nyc BBQ spot (Blue Smoke) this would have run me $25 without even the sides... at Piersons? Nine bucks.

woggins-piersons3.jpg
chopped brisket was good as hell too as they throw in all sorts of mystery parts and burnt ends.

woggins-piersons4.jpg
mr. pierson let us check out the smoker in the back. it was blacker than black. Boy Genius approves.

woggins-witw.jpg
W.I.T.W?
Stony went with the Ari Gold power broker look.
as i took this flick, he said "Jamie From Stones Throw is gonna get a boner when he sees this"

woggins-tony2.jpg
another priceless Stony shot. he is serious about wedding dancing.

woggins-neilniceness.jpg
.... so is Neil Nice, but he couldn't get his head around the concept of open bar wedding thus the vodka cranberry jug.

woggins-woodman.jpg
another Lab tradition, have someone from the Lab DJ your wedding... Woodman killed it with Wedding Set to End Wedding Sets. Only Lab DJs would beat blend, live mash, quick mix 80s and 90s at a wedding. Wes was feeling it.

Well I was super excited to have my first official record with TTLAB/Money Studies come out last week. Then my good friend M.Ronson had to do the usual upstaging and release this 12" with Gucci, YES THAT GUCCI...

chauffeur.jpg

It's a super-synth group of some sorts with my man Ticklah, Alex Greenwald, Sam Sparro, Thelodius London and someone i'm forgetting. Oh and also this guy on the drums...

Oh well at least you don't have to go on Ebay to buy Da Hardy Boyz. We stopped by Eli and Stretch's greally dope new show Delancey Music Service on EAST VILLAGE RADIO on Monday (10/26) night. Listen now cause I don't think we'll be invited back...

This Friday myself and LLOYD'S monthly all 80s all 12" party BOYZ ON FILM get's extra crazy with both WOODY & AYRES showing off the best of their collections...

BOYS-ON-HALLOWEEN.jpg

Lastly i got thrown on this crazy Vice 1994 themed Halloween party cause they heard I could play a shoegaze set. I guess I was too late to make the flyer so you'll have to click for it.

Really its Spanish Berlin pulling the strings on the early 90s (120 Minutes style) DJ set.

Burn In Hell, John Allen Muhammad

DC sniper Muhammad set to die by lethal injection

The Associated Press
Tuesday, October 27, 2009; 1:07 PM

RICHMOND, Va. -- The mastermind of the 2002 Washington, DC-area sniper attacks will die by lethal injection next month, Virginia officials said Tuesday.

This motherfucker John Allen Muhammad (along with that lil buster John Malvo) was responsible for the three-week killing spree in October 2002 that left 10 dead in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia). That was a terrifying moment in my life, along with my friends and family in the community, one we should never forget. People could not even pump their gas or walk from their parked car to the supermarket entrance without fear of a fatal sniper shot. Any loud bang would cause instant fear in the entire vicinity and people were suspicious of every white van on the road (which later ended up being based on false intelligence - a huge debacle in the case).

Justice has been served.

Let's remember the victims and their family/friends....

Raida was the man, nuff said. He took turntablism and showmanship to new heights, but who remembers these dudes? Nobody - that's who! Unless grew up a scratch addict like Me, Snack orEddie IXL back in the day. These guys are by far not the best DJ's you'll ever see, but they blow my mind nonetheless.

DJ CHAD JACKSON - the way he mixes folk songs with breakbeats reminds me of Z-Trip! Love the pilot cap, the way he throws up records and spikes them down - who does that?

DJ BAD BOY BILL - rare footage of the house legend gettin disqualified for incorpating hoes in his battle routine. Gotta kinda be patient with this one. @ 4:55 it gets really good, when the girls come out. Sheeeeit.

And then there's BABY G - one of Dj'ing's most 'sensitive' and 'graceful' personalities. Big points for incorporating every part of his body into the routine: his head, ass, schlong, choad and barefeet, all while his boy stands in the background to make him look tough.

THE ABSOLUTE WINNER in the HORRID DJ MOMENTS list - I couldn't even find on the internet! It was DJ Mem-brain & Ray D's routine in the 1996 DMC finals(against ROC RAIDA). First of all, they were the only DJ duo I can remember that only used one pair of turns in their routine. Gayest moment in DJ history has to be when one hops on the other piggyfront style, bends backwards to grab the fader while the other uses his hands juggle two recs. It's so bad, you have to see it to believe it.

dahardy-ep-1.jpg
So we dropped the vinyl version of Da Hardy Boyz EP last night,
here's an interview with Blu Jemz of Da Hardy Boyz to give you some more insight...

dahardy-ep-jemz.png
How did Da Hardy Boyz come about?
well... we used to get fucked up after parties... and then we realized it was a lot more fun to make music at 5 am. so we started making these afterparty songs that were house/ electro (which btw are really easy to make, not good but easy) and we'd rap over them with german accents. then.. we found out diplo would really like these songs, so we lost the German accents and took it seriously.

dahardy-ep-2.jpg
What bands and producers influenced the Hardy sound?
Basically, anybody from the 80s. that was the apex of music production and pop music writing,,, after that except for rap it went to shit...

dahardy-psb.jpg
You guys seem to have a thing for the Pet Shop Boys, what's so good about em?
The Pet Shop Boys are crazy underrated.  They have a million hit singles and a huge fan base and their music has so much emotion but they're still club songs- which is an amazing dichotomy.

dahardy-ep-tk.png
You and TK go way back... how do you guys know each other?
We went to same elementary school.  he was always the mad "cool guy", even though he was a year younger than me.  When w were 15 and going to Nasa, Tk"s mom would let him have afterparties (starting at 8am)  at his house and cook us breakfast.  he was just the mad cool guy of the group.

dahardy-ep-lloyd.png
We all know LLoydski we see out at the clubs, but what's he really like?
Lloyd's like my extreme emotional best friend.  Like, when i wanna kill myself- I call Lloyd...
Or, when i wanna kill someone else- I call Lloyd.

Knowing you guys, the recording process must have been pretty hairy... What's it like? How do come up with the hooks to the tracks?
now since the studio is at tk"s most shit starts with one of his beats, or me or lloyd have a concept for a song and we just make it all together. But to be honest tk is the one with the magic touch in the group thats why we call him terry touch. like 'I want to be there' is all him . we helped with production but every note is from his brain.

You seem to have a strong new wave vibe going on, what were the key synthesizers used on this?
Somethings from Roland< somethings from Oberheim.  A lot of stuff in Logic..  a casio.

dhardyboyz-ep-3.jpg
You debuted the live show with the Summer Tour. It must be pretty hard to get a crowd who's never heard of you on your side. What's that like? What works?
We dont' anticipate any crowd to be on our side.

As a DJ and Producer, you seem really good at navigating the club world, corporate sponsorships, the underground DJ scene, etc. How do you do it? Any tips for aspiring DJs / Producers?
Well, believe it or not, all these people that I work with are my homies before any business is involved.  If You dont" know me you probably see me as an asshole or lucky schmoe.  Contrary to that belief, people who know me and talk to me, realize that I'm sincere and on some real shit.  If it were up to people that dont"t know me_ i"d have no career- but luckily...

dahardy-robotnick.jpg
What are 5 of your favorite records or singles?
(pffft) sound of distress..
Alexander Robotnik- "Problems D' Amour"
Jay_dee "Plastic Dreams"
anything by Dilla
Tribe "Low End Theory"
My Bloody Valentine
and my Prefuse remix.

Is it true you used to date Kelis?
Every girl i"ve ever gone out with was a mistake until now.... watch out for Spanish Berlin... & ~Dark Dreams~

This fast-paced 2008 documentary by Jenner Furst, Dan Levin and Ben Solomon examines the life of photographer, filmmaker, activist, archivist, storyteller and story maker Clayton Patterson. Since 1979 Patterson has dedicated his life to documenting the final era of raw creativity and lawlessness in New York City's Lower East Side, a neighborhood famed for art, music and revolutionary minds. Traversing the outside edge he's recorded a dark and colorful society, from drag to hardcore, heroin, homelessness, political chaos and ultimately gentrification.

if you haven't noticed, we've got a new bench in front of the new york store. the last one did us real well. thousands of people have sat at this bench from the elderly in the morning, to djs during the day, and the dirty people at night. just look at that urban decay... if there was a dj museum, this would definitely belong in there...

this was actually our second bench. the first one was made by my friend Izzi. it only lasted a year or so. After that, Bogman took it upon himself to create the perfect urban bench, studying construction and reinforcing everything times three. it held up much longer than anyone would have predicted... you did us good ol'friend, sad to see you go.

i always found it interesting when i would attend lectures at different universities on topics ranging from strategic design to economic policy, that i would see someone who i would have some to little interaction with attend as well. it made more of a connection, and in a sense, bridged some type of gap. one person who i've taken influence from and highly regard is Jeff Staple. so when i saw that he posted an entry on following Jan Chipchase this is where our e-paths have crossed as i have been following Chipchase's site for a while. though it may not be the best friday read for most of us who are working for the weekend, you certainly can take inspiration for projects you may have lined up over saturday and sunday with a lot of Jan's points.

After negotiating with 2 different sneaker companies, I was finally granted an interview with New York based producer/artist/saxaphonist/renaissance man Gran Central:
grancentralgreen1.jpg
M: What kind of gear are you rocking for your live set up?
GC: i run ableton off my craptop g4, with the mpd pads to control it, but
that goes into a small board and i dub it out live with a electrix
mofx, and an akai mfc filter box, the most slept on unit out there,
and my horn, a selmer tenor, i sometimes have the microkorg xl buttery
with me but thats only sometimes. i can control the efx channel that i
run my horn through with a bottom of the barrel damper pedal.
grancentralfront1.jpg
M: You started on alto sax, but later moved to tenor. If you could
flip back to 1987 (or insert special year here) would you have started
on tenor instead?
GC: would have, no love lost on the alto but if i knew how much more
expressive the tenor was i would have jumped off with that. or the
bari, i love that sound. that and i would kept all my GI joes in there
boxes and made cake on ebay.
CressidaNastyNice.jpg
M: Out of all the whips you've owned, was the Cressida the most
special? If not, please explain
GC: the cressida held it down with class and elegance. it had like a 16
band eq on the radio, and a 10 speaker system. the 84 cressida also
came equipped with the metal button, as well as the largest trunk in
its class. i loved it and it died while me and cru jonez and some
others were returning from a fabsix gig at manhattanville college,
i remember flagging down a car, and they actually had a cellphone
(this was 1997) and i called for a tow, but then i dropped their
cellphone and they were vexxed. the tow truck driver was drunk
(seriously) and i asked him if he liked cooder from Dukes of hazzard,
he was not down.
cooterWebWeb123.jpg
M: What kind of shoes do you rock to skate in? What kind of shoes do
you rock when you're in da club?
GC: usually skate in vans, floss in nikes, i really like the lakai mike
carrolls though, really good skate shoe. i like mid and high tops,
gotta protect those ankles dunions!
metro-northWebs.jpg
M: You were heavily involved in the skate scene in the 90's (and still
in the 00's). Being from Westchester you got to experience NY
skateboarding beyond just 5 boroughs.
Are there any NY stores/shops/skate spots/video parts you'd like to
mention that you think were very influential to what skating is today?
Doesn't have to be a "definitive list" by any means, just some of your
personal favorites.
GC: i gotta say that the trains molded skating a lot, you would be at the
banks and see cats from allover the tri-state killing it.
-slappy noselides on the low ledge down the banks 9. act like ya know,
that was my shit back in the day.
-skating around, just hitting spots.
the city, these boroughs give us all the environment and inspiration
we need to go and shred.
i could start naming names and say places like Benjy's and like 1
percent of the people would know what im talking about.
A big shout out to 2nd Nature and the crew, really holding it down,
big up bestchester.
2ntr.com holla!

thanks!

so monday, i went to my local coffee spot, Porto Rico, to pick up some fresh beans for the week (Hawaiian Kawai, which for some reason never makes you crash). I ordered a small cup to go cause they feature a new bean every day. In my caffeine daze, I take the cup and leave the beans on the counter... duh. So I went back today and felt like an idiot asking about it. The girl behind the counter goes underneath the counter and seems to go through a bunch of different bags and grabs my bag. I say "this happens all the time"? And she says "yes". at that moment I felt one with the rest of nyc coffee fiends.... and another good reason not to go to Starbucks...

bluebottle.jpg
speaking of good coffee, I got to check out Blue Bottle in SF... they imported this insane coffee maker from Japan which literally takes a day to get the a super-concentrated form of coffee (it's a super-slow drip_. Boy Genius had it and was wired... I tried a new orleans style coffee which blew me away. highly recommended.

slipperonice.jpg
Air Force Ones on ice? I just found a pair of FLIP-FLOPS that i kept on ice! These are probably the best flip-flops ever produced. super-comfy with Birkenstock style cork bottoms and velvety band. I think I bought 4 pairs when these came out... haha. Boy Genius, eat it up. Flip-flops on ice, sounds soo stupid... but I can't wait to break these out in 2010.

I know the blog has way too many flyers and shit, but deal with me here this is the last date of the BEAT MACHINE tour and this is really my only internet outlet. Geo, Waajeed and I have been surprised at every turn on this tour having to play everything from beats (duh) to indie rock to soulful house. At leats tonight back i NYC we know what to expect. HOPEFULLY. Benji B and my man O Spindles will also be joing the crowd and Joey's working on free hot dogs on the grill. So try and come by it's early from 8-12.

Also tomorrow night the Scion Radio Party is gonna be pretty hard...

metropolitanoval.jpg
the tour of nyc's soccer fields continues...

Metropolitan Oval
go down Metropolitan ave, past east willysburg, past hipster bushwick, past the industrial zone, and into the residential Maspeth, Queens... hidden off a nondescript street, you'll find this majestic field with a skyline view of manhattan. aside from the view, you really don't feel like you're in NYC anymore. with houses lining the field, the eastern european spectators, and the trance music blasting at halftime, you feel like you're in a suburb of Romania more than Queens. The field proportions are definitely odd, but they make for a quick game.

we played an old eastern european team who were out of shape but clever. the argentine got in a tussle with an older gentleman, who immediately turned into a Russian gangster. his brows went 45 degrees inward and the face of the devil appeared.

he started yelling "i'll blow your fucking head off right here, you don't know who you are messing with... REALLY, i'll blow your head off". afterwards the normally unflappable Argentine confessed that he was shook. I was too... this guy's angry face was straight out of a mob movie. if there was a bat on the ground, he probably would have smashed the Argentine. We imagined getting sprayed walking to the parking lot... that would have sucked.

more about the field:

History
The Metropolitan Oval was originally built in 1925 by German and Hungarian immigrants to be a European style soccer field with facilities. From 1925 onwards, the Oval served as a soccer field for men and boys of all ages and ethnicities. Many U.S. national team players from the New York region played games at the Oval while youths.

By the 1990’s, however, the Oval was in a state of disarray. Any grass the field once had was gone from overuse. It owed hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes and was scheduled for foreclosure by the City of New York.

In response to this state of affairs, the Metropolitan Oval Foundation was formed to save this historic site. The non-profit organization led by Jim Vogt, a longtime Queens native, and Chuck Jacob and Valerie Jacob, two New York lawyers dedicated to the restoration of historic soccer fields across the city, managed to raise enough money to save the field from foreclosure. In addition, Nike and U.S. Soccer each contributed $250,000 towards the construction of a Field-Turf field and new lights for the complex.

lastly on a design nerdus tip, check out this dramatic use of grayscale on this version of Ike Turner's classic. 3d and stunning.

A year ago, Nick Catchdubs, Jess Jubilee and I started a party called Flashing Lights. Since then we've thrown nearly two dozen parties with a ton of Lab favorites: Klever, La Roux, Mixhell, A-Trak, Nadastrom, DJ Dara, Michna, Sabo, Roctakon, Staccato, Sujinho, Toadally Krossed Out, Cubic Zirconia, Drop The Lime and so on. Last Saturday was our one year anniversary party in the Dim-Sum Palace in Chinatown. Our guest was Toddla T, a fantastic young DJ from the UK who is best known for his residency at Fabric (and Fabric Live CD) and his productions, which fuse dancehall with electro house and grime. Download his Essential Mix for BBC Radio1 (tracklist here) and check out this interview he did for Time Out New York.

Ben Ali, Founder of Ben’s Chili Bowl, Dies at 82

ben_ali.jpg

Chocolate City bow your heads. If you arent familiar to the District (or what people outside the city call "Washington" - note to all of you, none of us call our city "Washington" like you do, we call it D.C.), Ben's Chili Bowl IS D.C., much like the Beltway, the Redskins, Boy Genius, and Go-Go music (dont think of those crackers on Capitol Hill). Ben's is to DC as Pat's Steaks is to Philly. Only two people to eat there on the house are Cosby + Barack. If you are planning a trip to the 202, you gotta swing by.

Fascinating history, read about it here:

from Ben's site....

Dear family and friends:

We would like to thank you for your incredible outpouring of love and support. Your expressions have truly touched us. We appreciate you now as we have over the past 51 years.

With love and thanks,
The Ali Family

great week for arsenal fans... Arsene celebrated his milestones by wearing a short tie... i wonder if he did that on purpose as a fashion statement, or he could care less? whatever the case, i will be rocking that look at my next tie function...

aresenalblack-3.jpg
did you catch Nasri on the bench sporting a shiny bubble jacket? that only adds to the myth of Frosted Tips. check out Eboue too, he's a weird dude.

aresenalblack-2.jpg
i love Arsene's reaction when they score... a little double fist pumping, then a look on his face like: "that's my shit"

aresenalblack-4.jpg
that Walcott - Cesc celebration hug was .1 seconds from reaching homoerotic... anything to have Cesc stay...

aresenalblack-5.jpg
man, Chelsea looks good. this goal by Anelka was incredible. for me, Anelka represents what American soccer players should strive for. Obviously, he's french, but he's got the body type, speed, physicality, and technical moves of a NBA small forward... just applied to soccer.
also, i wonder if Vermaelen can stop The Drogba.

lastly, the argentine sent me a video of a header goal from 45 meters out...
