yeah, it's old news to hate on Ed Hardy,

interesting read in GQ about the story of Christian Audigier

So you may remember that last week I said I was going on this Scion tour to all these weird cities with, Drop The Lime, Craze and Rob Wonder. Basically Scion's idea is to let us radio hosts take guests and do these parties in small venues in small cities that normally couldn't afford this kind of line-up.

The last time I went out with Hardy, Pase, Franki and Designer Drugs was crazy, but this time is even crazier simply because if not for this tour I would never be on the road with even one of these dudes, much less all three of them.

Tonight was our second to last show in SALT LAKE CITY

Tomorrow we're in MINNEAPOLIS at 7th st or 1st ave or whatever.

Anyway SLC is actually pretty fun, even though they have weird rules like they're not allowed to sell a double shot of whiskey?

slcsoundcheck.jpg

The best look was this record store Rob took us to. I didn't think record stores still existed in the rest of America, but Randy's was killing it...

randys.jpg

The only thing more bizarre than ending up on the road with this odd-lot was going record shopping with them. I should mention that Craze opted out of diggin and instead went on the hunt for another addition to his infamous fitted collection (do you think A-Trak put him onto these hat suitcases or vice-versa?)

craze hats.jpg

When Luca, Rob and I got to Randy's shop we all darted in different directions. DTL went straight for the sound tracks

lucarcord.jpg

In addition to finding this and some Fellini OST he somehow got access to some secret breaks section I wasn't allowed entry to where he found a crispy copy of JAMES BROWN IS DEAD, which he only bought cause I threatened I would take it if he didn't.

Rob was in some Folk-World section, which sounds awful now, but somehow pulled out this crazy African record with a cover of one of ~dd~'s all time favorites PAINT IT BLACK.

robrecord.jpg

I on the other hand did the obvious move, went straight for the 12"s and stocked up on some 80s shit.

jemzslcloot.jpg

Just in time for our ALL 80s ALL 12"s party this Friday with the original smooth operator himself MOMA helping us out.

boysonfilm_web-10.02.09.jpg

The way I see it any city with a roller derby gets the OK from me. If my girl lived here she would definitely skate for the SISTERS OF NO MERCY.

MINNEAPOLIS ARE YOU OUT THERE???

BTW HARDY BLOG IS BACK UP AND KICKING

Here's the blend I did of Hardy Time with that Holy Ghost! x Curses track. It's been killing them on this tour.

Oh yeah only one week until...

Tonight! Los Angeles! We go til 2am!
I think we all already know who the magic secret guests are...
acidacidacidacid.jpg
Since Acid Girls have a new record out, I caught up with Greg and popped 5 questions:
01mysteriousAcidGirls.jpg

M: How did you guys come up with the name Acid Girls?
G: Deanne Cheuk had an art book called Mushroom Girls Virus Book but Mushroom Girls sounded stupid, so we changed it to Acid Girls.  Alternately, I tell people that I've never done acid and Jamie has never done girls.

M: When you first started making electronic music, what were your
first methods/techniques?
G: I think me and Jamie started roughly around the same time.  About 10 years ago, maybe. Several pets ago anyhow, sadly.  I started with this program called Sony MAGIX Studio or something like that, sampling little bits of songs and cutting them up into truly garish things.  I recall making something out of an Alice Coltrane harp sample and turning it, against all odds, into complete garbage.

M: What kind of car do you drive? why?
G: I don't drive a car because I don't like cars.  Jamie drives a John Deere because he has a farm in rural North Dakota.

M: What kind of sneakers or shoes do you wear out these days?
G: I wear some dirty Reeboks that I got for free in Berlin for playing a party for Awesome Agency/Reebok, some brown loafers that make me look I'm going to commit suicide, and some black Palladium boots because I like that they used to make airplane tires.

M: What have you been listening to in the past week?
G: In the past week I've been listening to Joy Orbison, Shortstuff, Bok Bok & L-Vis 1990, Harvard Bass, Classixx, Health, Broadcast, Burial, DJ Shadow, Hudson Mohawke, It's a Fine Line, Waylon Jennings, Billy Kinsley, Johnny Harris and other random dance-y things to figure out what to play out in a set.

word up, see you tonight, along with every dj producer promoter ever

the view from our suite looked down directly at the Temple of Butt... that's how they do in PR. T devised a plan to spray paint a brown asterisk in the middle but it never happened... thank god...

pr-casadante.jpg
in between the black jack table, the pool, and the clubs, we searched out Mofungo... not exactly the wild dish i had imagined, but pretty damn good with creole sauce...

pr-eric.jpg
our driver for the trip... eric. if you are down there, ask another driver for this guy's number... definitely the number one guide for your nite time adventures. dude knew everyone, never waited at a red light, and worked the reggaeton mixes like a dj...

pr-bigpun.jpg
another character from PR... this is the Big Pun of DJs. dood was well over the 300lbs mark and sat in this circular Mikey Dread At The Controls console... he had some his own signature growls, told Frogman that they should sign him to mad decent...

this pic pretty much sums up the trip, last ones to leave the club, everything blurry... wish i could post more pics but that wouldn't be advised...

1996.

nastys13th.jpg

Now.

Man, I've been doing this weekly since the summer of 1996. Through the years, I've partnered up with some great dj's and I've seen the music, people & attitudes change. Those changes aside, one thing remains the same - this night has always been about having the best time ever. ON A MONDAY NIGHT.

Before the internet, blogs and when skills still mattered, we were doing this shit and doing it large. In it's infancy, no one in Texas (especially in Austin) was really delivering a multi genre weekly. I've watched it start off slow, blow up like crazy, plateau, slow down and blow up again. In that small dive we do our thing at, I've had homies take their future wives on their first date, seen dudes propose to their ladies, mad kids having their first dj experience & couples literally sexing on the dancefloor. Even my past love life is marked significantly with moments from this night...

I pride myself in knowing that this night is for the people - it has nothing to do with cliques, class or race. I thank all the folks that come out week in and week out. Their support is steadfast. Monday is a hard sell. Which makes me appreciate those folks even more.

So with all that said, we are finally throwing our first anniversary party. I've never been one to throw events like this, but I think this night & our people deserve it. It's only fitting that we bring my friend DJ Eleven into town to do his thing. Playing alongside the dude will be a pleasure.

If you're around these parts, come out and support. It's gonna be a celebration!

Ronaldo is UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!

Oh man.....

Look at his first touch when he receives the pass at the 1:30 mark. Then look at his side-step dribble move he pulls on the oncoming defender. The goal is just whatever for Ronaldo standards, but he had about three more legit chances to score. Regardless, thats FIVE goals in four league matches (a Real Madrid record)

Some people just are fucking crazy

This situation/event bothers me so much that I had to put it on blast to the world to inform you guys out there to stop acting like BITCHES. My friend's fucked-up roommate (Adam), after finding out he wasnt invited to a wedding of a friend hes not even remotely close with, decides to confront the groom about it (on gchat out of all means, like a bitch) five days before the wedding....

Adam: damn, i couldnt get an invite to the wedding, thanks fag
Ron: sorry man, Megan's family is pretty big and most replied yes. so we needed to keep the numbers down, which means i wasnt able to invite people from my side
Adam: yea right, that hurts my feelings.
i know its not
fine whatever
Ron: making me feel bad
shit
etiquette
Adam: well i feel bad now
didnt get an invite
we went out to lunch that day and talked about your wedding the whole time
Ron: thats not something people get mad about man, it is what it is, and it's not an easy thing, but you cant make someone feel bad about the wedding 5 days before
Adam: whatever still gay

The 90's Hip Hop version of myself w/ Roc & Rob Swift.

What can I say about Raida that hasn't already been said? I will say that the X-Men were always a little funkier than most battle crews. It was most apparent when I played with them & Common Sense in Austin, around 1997. Seeing the videos is one thing, but them live & direct is another. My mind was blown...

I remember watching that X-men vhs tape that I got from Fat Beats over and over. The footage of Raida killing it on that talk show stands out the most. Also, him doing that Ed OG routine at Fat Beats was so dope...

Big up & respect to the GRANDMASTER.

damn, Roc Raida?
i felt i needed to get my two cents in here cause if not for Roc Raida, i don't know if the Lab would have ever existed. it was 1995ish and me, jasper, and izzi went to our first DJ battle. it was Fat Beats 2nd battle and our first time attending one of these things. it was held at a tiny club/lounge on houston...

for the most part, it was incredibly mediocre. there seemed to be something wrong with the setup, cause everybody kept skipping and messing up. the only contestant i really remember is Spinbad (the defending champ), cause he brought his records and needles up in a pizza box and did some nice cuts, but he even had the needle skipping. i don't even remember who won...

but then the emcee (Red Alert?), announced that Roc Raida was going to do a showcase. i'd never heard of him, and with a name that audacious, I didn't know what to expect. so up steps this little snoopy dude with his signature backwards hat. but there was something different about him, there was no fear or trepidation... his body language read: you guys don't know what you're in for...

the routine started and magically, the setup fixed itself. here was this guy doing 10x harder tricks while spinning, grinning, and keeping the needle perfectly locked. I really can't explain how blown away I was... i love sports, but i had seen nothing like this... fuck behind the back, this guy was doing behind the neck, moving the crossfader with his mouth while performing a musical routine and keeping this "ridiculous I'm killing you" look on his face. just when I thought I had seen his whole arsenal, Roc dropped his "Sucker Emcees" routine, magically deconstructing the beats with featherlight touches and body tricks (he ended it with his middle finger!).... He concluded the set with his version of "Rock The Bells". this was hands down, one of the most incredible things I had ever seen. By the time it was over, the crowd was in a frenzy... and in perfect timing, Red Alert shouted Roc Raida's gonna bring the belt home for the USA, and then the place just lost it... like we were cheering on Ali or something... from one showcase, I was hooked.

from that point, we religiously started going to these battles. i bought an 06 in midtown... and a couple steps later, we opened the lab... (full story later)

I probably watched Roc do his thing over 20 times over the years, but I never got bored of his routines. he was always progressing them, throwing in new parts, changing the speed to 45, but most of all, it was charisma and dexterity on the turntables. he was the star athlete while every one else was just nerds...

Heeesssss Baaaackkkk!!!!

Hurts to see this guy not in United colors, but hes still the same, just richer, access to hotter hookers (madrid hooks > manchester hooks).

Goal 1:
ronny_cl_1.jpg
The classic pre-free-kick karate stance

Absolute classic Cristiano Ronaldo, not a keeper in the world that coulda saved this (also, note the music this European YouTube user decides to pair with the footage, surprising its not something 1,000,000% more gayer):

Goal 2:
Putting the kids to bed. This keeper must never have watched any footage of Ronaldo's free kicks ever. The motherfucker kicks it as hard as possible and always dips down, doesnt this keeper ever read this blog!? Even all you sports-hatin hipsters even know this, mang!!!
Worst example of goalkeeping in Champions League history:

ronny_cl_2.jpg

After going up 3 in the first half, Real Madrid let Zurich come back in the second half. With heavy momentum and the score being 3-2, Ronaldo puts the entire nation of Switzerland to bed and does the Hulk Hogan for added salt.

I've been meaning to interview my childhood friend Matt Friedman for ages, and today seems totally appropriate.
mattfriedman2009.jpg
Why? Cause the track he produced for Kid Cudi came out today on the album "Man on the Moon"
Cudiwebweb.jpg
The song is called "Enter Galactic" and you should buy it.
So where do I begin?
...Around 1986 I went over to Matt's house after school, and he whipped out one of these:
CasioSK1final.jpg
The Casio SK-1. State of the art sampling technology. You could cough, and record it, and then play pitched coughs all day. We must have spent hours that day sampling everything in sight. Two little kids just going crazy for sound. Things got over the top when we took his cat, squeezed her, and sampled the "meow!"
Fast Forward to 1993 and Matt asked me to play trombone in his new band. A direct inspiration at the time was Nation of Ulysses frontman Ian Svenonius, because he would sing AND play trumpet, and it was awesome.
NOU77cover.jpg
During the 90's we wrote numerous EP's and released numerous tapes. Played numerous shows in NYC and then everyone split for college.
Around 1997 Matt got an MPC and that changed everything. If you are reading this blog then you probably know that feeling. Also during this time Matt was cast for the movie "Private Parts" and played Howard Stern as a 16 year-old.
privatepartsdvd.jpg
The thing I wasn't ready for was only 1 year later Matt taught himself Logic and was basically like "Check this out, this is the future."
I was the dude in the studio going "How did you do that?"
From that point on we were producing electronic music full steam, and sampling all our own instruments. In 2000 we got signed to an indie label out of Miami, and proceeded to release music under the name Secret Frequency Crew...
SFCrarerarerare.jpg
Fast Forward to 2005 and Matt started a production duo with Jed Cappelli called Illfonics. You know when you meet dudes in NYC and they talk like they got beats but they got nothing? -Well Illfonics has been the exact opposite of that. Their relentless work in the studio has led to their production speaking for itself, and thus landing beats with LL Cool J, Jim Jones, Mickey Factz, and many more.
Check out their myspace
illfonicsPurple123.jpg
After numerous negotiations with shampoo companies (it's fashion week) I caught up with Matt Friedman and got him to answer a few questions:
M: On Cudi's "Enter Galactic" what kind of instruments did you use to make the song?
MF: I did it all in Logic. Played live bass on it, there's piano, rhodes, Juno-106 (bloops), few other odds and ends, then programmed all the drums using Battery. Yoko Ono sang backup vocals on it, but I had to cut that part out.

M: Did you have Cudi in mind when you made the beat?
MF: No actually. It was originally made with a singer in mind. I had been sending stuff to Cudi for a while at that point and my manager was the one who was like "I could hear Cudi on this". My first reaction was "really?" Ha. But I agreed and he was right, so I guess he's a better A&R than me.

M: When the song was finished what kind of tweaks did you do to the
final mix? Did you team with engineers on a big console?
MF: No, I wish. I love the mixing process but the whole album was mixed by Manny Marroquin out in LA. He does all of Kanye's stuff, mixed for Rihanna, TI, Alicia Keys, etc so it was in good hands.

M: From your perspective, How involved was Kanye with
assembling/A&Ring the album?
MF: Its interesting, I thought he would have his handprint all over it, but really he only did two tracks on there. From what I heard he trusted that Cudi, Pat and Emile knew what they were doing and really just supported their vision.

M: Now that you've produced a hit on the radio (Jim Jones' "Na Na Nana Na
Na") has that changed the way you approach an album such as this?
MF: No not at all. And I definitley would call the Jones track a "single" and not a "hit", ha. This project was different for me in general though because from an artistic standpoint I really wanted to be a part of this album. I felt like the type of stuff I do is really in line with Cudi's music and I went at it for months making beats with him in mind and sending them through, so I'm really fucking excited that it actually made it on there.

M: These days I can buy an album on itunes and still not get any liner
notes. Are there any heads behind the scenes you'd like to shout out?
MF: Whatup to Jed (my partner in ILLFONICS), Toshi (manager), Lena (Lawyer), Nigil (Cudi's A&R), Kaslow (his DJ), Pat & Emile, Fabian Guiseppi (Hair), Christepho (Makeup), Mom, Dad, You, Everyone ever

thanks!

TONIGHT NYC!!!

ALEXANDER ROBOTNICK

I'm so hyped for tonight, in my opinion one of the most important Italo/Electro dudes ever is coming to play a live set at our little Scion monthly. Normally getting an artist of this stature in a little ass club like Plan B would be a joke but thanks to the Fools Golder's great new single...

...it's happening. We all know (and rinse out) this guys 80s classics but his new shit (especially this new 12") is still fucking killing it. He goes on around midnight and will be playing a live set and like all the Scion radio parties this is completely free. It's fall, back to school time, LET'S GOOOOOO!!!!

Haven't fully digested OB4CL2 yet but from what i hear it's pretty ill. Now, i'm in no way expecting it to live up to OB4CL1 but at least it seems like Rae and affiliates were focused on making a classic (and in today's rap market, that sure the hell ain't easy!) I guess only time will tell...one thing i can say, if you truly appreciate the project, definitely kick down a few bucks and cop it. On another note, has the recession got you feeling a little down and out??? You might want to consider selling that copy of the Purple Tape you've been holding onto all these years. They're fetching some decent change on the Bay right now...

argentina-pregame.jpg

so the Argentine fulfilled one of his life-long dreams, and attended the Argentina vs. Brazil game in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina... probably no Lab blog reader will ever experience this event, so I asked him to write up an account from the cheap seats..

argentina-luciano.jpg

We (me, my blond girlfriend and my 65 year old Dad) made the mistake of thinking that “sitting” in El Popular (the area behind the goals reserved for the Inchas) was going to be no big deal. When we got there at 7:00 for a 9:30 game it was already overflowing. We somehow pushed through the people until we lodged ourselves in with the fanatics. It was rough – people cussing us out and pushing us in every direction. There are no seats, just steps meant for one, but they're stacked three people deep and you can’t even square your shoulders to the field – you just mash up in with pick pockets and hooligans. You try to act like you’ve been there before, but no body is buying it.

argentina-dad.jpg

During warm-ups someone threw an M80 at Julio Cesar that almost blew my eardrum out – and I have to give it to him, he went down for a minute and then just kept on warming up. I would have shit my pants and called it a night.

argentina-game.jpg

Once the game started and everyone was rooting for Argentina the creepy crowd got euphoric and started jumping up and down together singing songs. The crazy thing is you can’t actually jump, you just bob up and down, because if you do actually jump, someone is standing where you used to be by the time you fall to the ground and you end up just kind of crowd surfing.

A few minutes later Argentina made their first attempt at goal and everyone went “OOOOO” and the crowd was like a tsunami – I mean it picks you up and rolls you around. I thought it was awesome because I had seen it on tv, but my girlfriend went into shock… she started hyperventilating and could only look straight ahead. She eventually calmed down – tough girl.

A few minutes later some suicidal Coke vendor tried to make it through the crowd and spilled 90% of his drinks after making it 5 feet – may be the worst job ever. My poor Dad ended up getting into a scrum with the vendor and some other guy. I couldn’t even get to him to help and I was just 2 people away – that’s how tight it was. No worries – he’s doing fine.

Last update and tip for anyone brave enough to mix in El Popular is that at half time everyone sits down. But remember there are no seats, and it’s too crowded to even stand. That means there is a race to sit down and if you don’t move first , there is a domino effect and either you fall from people sitting on your legs and lose your spot, or you get pinned in and can’t even move your legs. Don’t bother asking them to move – they just cuss you out and remind you that you don’t belong.

Thursday night don't forget to come out and show some support for Kon...

Eli Escobar had this to say via his blog...

"This is going to go down as the worst summer ever, especially for a lot of my friends and music lovers. All we can do is try and help and support those we care about while we are here. In the spirit of friendship we being you this event for Kon who is sick right now..."
