I do not want to write about this, I dont not want to talk about this but i think people want answers and I cant be selfish not at a time like this.

This is not the case of a selfish man, or and unlucky break or a wrongful death, this is addiction plain and simple. Addiction is a disease and AM's passing needs to be viewed the same way you'd view a loved ones struggle with cancer or any number of incurable maladies that can take a human life. Millions of people all over the world suffer and struggle with Addiction, they are our friends, our family, our coworkers and sometimes even our heroes. There is no finger to point, no way to blame an enabler or a drug dealer or even to blame Adam for this loss we simply have to live with it. Here was a man lifted from the gutter, given a second and then a third chance, reborn a god almost, why? we say why would someone with everything risk it all for one last party, one last binge. That is addiction. Adam knew there were no guarantees and knew that he might not make it back if he picked up that pipe, when faced with the option, do this drug or this drink that could destroy my life, or face these demons inside me and live to fight another day and spin another set, he chose or rather his disease chose for him. He was a sick man, and sometimes when we are sick or suffering the last thing we want is the help we really need.

When "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came out I was probably 13 years old, and in one fell swoop Kurt Cobain and co. ruined everything my 13 year old heart held dear. There was no more alternative radio and it was like the police had disbanded my secret club. My Club that knew about The Cure or Morrissey and stayed up past bed time Sunday nights to watch 120 minutes, and knew the lyrics to New Order songs like Temptation, and was excited for the new Lightning Seeds record. The entire earth shifted with that one song and i was so angry and felt so abandoned until i found rap.

Ten years later I moved to New York, dreaming of playing in clubs and being like Stretch Armstrong or Dj Riz, dreamed of playing Disco and "Miss You" by the Rolling Stones to adoring fans. There was no more scratching, no more dj contest, this was it, New York djing. We played late nights, we played on giant rotary mixers and I fucking loved it. Every record carefully selected and packed, just enough to fit in a cab trunk. Just enough disco and classics and rock to make the bungalow 8 crowd happy and all the hip hop and hits i needed to go "urban" all night if i had to, no fat, no excess, nothing u didn't need. 4 Crates in the trunk of a yellow cab, this was my nirvana (in the heaven sense). And then....

Then Adam, I just wanted Ny shit, but the world would not listen to me. god how I hated it, everything I held dear destroyed again, I bucked and bucked and bucked, Refused to scratch, refused to be "clever" sorry no "back beat" mash up crap for me, I just play the songs and try and keep the club going off, I'm not on stage I'm the dj I'm a servant of the people... Adam had to be the star, scratching at all times, making sure you knew it was all about him, tricks galore, the cheesier and more crowd pleasing the better. God how I fucking hated it, my beloved Rane 2016 slowly replaced by TTM 56's, my New York being ruined by this Californian take on things. Then the computer came and with it the last nail in the coffin. Fuck it i said, i can scratch better and double two records better than this guy i might as well make a fucking buck cause nobody wants to hear disco and house while the world is hollertronix crazy I'm just gonna cash in...

In the same way that every hack Seattle band got their shot after Nirvana so did every hack DJ, myself included. I scratched and I posed for pics and got on and off airplanes relentlessly, and in the process got to know this man who some part of me totally loathed for his crime against my culture. Some days I loved him like a brother and some days I wanted to rip his head off for being such a hollywood fag. A wile ago i decided that I did not want to play in AM's pond anymore, it took a lot to let go of the money and the lifestyle it brings but i knew it was not for me anymore and in reality never had been, i was a tourist if you will and my visa was up. One thing that came along with slowing down and stopping was a stronger bond with Adam, no longer bickering about who has the best manager or who the better club djs are or this or that, I was able to let go and really be a friend, or try to be. Maybe I could have done more, shared more about my own demons and fears, my own insecurities, but you never think your not going to get another chance, you don't think that the person with the power to light up a room and to change music forever, to change my life and the life of so many others that this person can lose this battle, be gone in an instant. For better and for worse my life has been completely altered by being in the slip stream behind this man let alone in the inner circle, I have learned so much about myself and music and life in the aftermath of his success. Beyond the US Weekly shit and the Nicole Richie shit, and the TV shows and Million Dollar Deals, beyond all that shit, this one guy loved djing so fucking much that he changed the face of music forever, in the same way that Curt did in the 90s. His influence is that profound.
On Monday another dj my friend Josh got hit by a car on his scooter and died, he was as well loved in his world as AM was in his. I've lost two friends this week, and i am forever changed, I want to be angry and blame Adam still, for picking up that drug, like if i blame him enough it will make sense that Josh got hit by a car and died for no good reason. In reality I'm not angry, accidents happen and I know Adam suffered from an incurable disease, knowledge dose not make this any easier, but i thought writing about it might help, and it has.

For Josh and Adam...

DJ Rok One just wrote a beautiful eulogy for DJ Josh Link who recently passed away...

First off, a big shout out to my man JOSH LINK, R.I.P. (1980-2009). 29
years of excellence, generosity and graciousness. It was an absolute
honor to have known him (however briefly), and I'm sure that everyone
else who was graced by his presence feels the exact same way. We could
have used more people like him on this planet, not one less...

To say Josh will be missed is a gross understatement. I wish he could
have seen the turnout at his funeral - it rivaled that of any 90's
Drum & Bass outlaw party. People from every age bracket and all walks
of life came out to give him a proper send-off. If a third that many
people show up to mine, I'll rest easy.

It's always gut-wrenchingly sad when someone is taken before their
time, but there are plenty of uplifting things to take away from this
tragedy. Josh lived his life precisely how he wanted to, and humbly
achieved success without stepping on anyone's toes. He was loved,
respected and admired by all, and left a positive impression on the
countless lives he touched.

Keeping his legacy alive, means following his example. We need to
pursue our dreams, stay on course, never compromise our integrity,
remember where we came from, treat people how we want to be treated,
and fully appreciate those close to us.

If we party or celebrate this weekend, it's to honor a stand up guy.
The show must go on, if for no other reason than because it's what
Josh would have wanted. Life is short, and we only get to do this
once. So I hope to see all of you soon, whether it be at a social
gathering, over dinner, or on the street. I'm around, get at me -
LET'S LINK...

The Argentine sent me this interesting poll. This survey was held by a San Pablo newspaper leading up to the WC qualifier between the two countries. They asked who was stronger at each position. Some interesting observations here:

- brazilians know their worldwide soccer scene, these rankings are pretty spot on... and they make strong judgements even on 2ndary national players like Datalo. I also like the 10 pt spread on Zanetti, they recognize the veteran's value against someone as dynamic as Alves...
- brazilians are obviously objective in their judgements - Messi over national hero Kaka by over 10 pts. is staggering, MonsterMasch by 40 pts over national team stalwart Giberto Silva is harsh, but true.
- maxi vs. melo is interesting... i would think they'd think the on-field strength and toughness of Melo would win out, but maybe the brazilians want more of a playmaker in that central role.

i am no means a sneaker head... i'm more in the vans, plain adidas mode. went to Paragon and Boy Genius forced the new Air Max on me... at $160, i refused thinking that was like 3 pairs of vans.... and i don't buy shit with silver on it. he felt so strongly about it, he ended up buying me the pair...

i must give it up to BG though... wearing these things is like walking on clouds. the technology has come so far, the last pair of running shoes i bought was the Air Max 95 around 97... those in comparison feel like heavy clunkers. it's the similar feeling to when i upgraded my Mac after 5 years... this is changing the way i look at footwear...

suzanne-paintings.jpg
stopped by my friend Suzanne's studio to check out her killer paintings... she showed me the techniques to achieve the visual effects... super-inspiring. i wish i had the patience to create something like this....

elevator-buttons.jpg
traveling around the city, you see some cool elevator button panel designs. this one is one of my favorites. great use of such a delicate, modern typeface.

sothebys.jpg
walked by Sotheby's nyc hq for the first time. This place takes up nearly a block of prime UES real estate. I was thinking how this place is just a retail company on roids, pulling the strings of supply and demand on a grand level... pretty impressive.

Inglourious Basterds gets the Estoy Con Estupido approval...
i never really forgave Tarantino for Jackie Brown... that was one of most disappointing movie-going experiences in my life... but this might be the flick that gets me back.

pixies-doolittle.jpg
also tickets went on sale for this... Hammerstein is the perfect venue to see them play and i'm feeling the album performance format that's getting popular these days...

ff-draft.jpg
lastly, at my Fantasy Football draft I had a colossal meltdown at round 5... i'm too embarrassed to tell you who i drafted, that's how bad it was.... I immediately started chugging beers, which only made things worse.... however, I pretty happy with Jones-Drew and my receiving duo of Jennings + Colston... and IDP lineup of Beason, Vilma, and Weddle... don't be like me.

The perfect song + the perfect action = the perfect scene. After that, you can't use the song in any other movie because it's so indelibly imprinted into the world's mind. Any attempt to do so makes you an idiot director.

Some examples:
Tears For Fears in Donnie Darko

Goin Out West from Fight Club

Georgia On My Mind from Quantum Leap

But, like any game, there are rules. No Tarantino, no Scorsese, no Wes Anderson, no music written specifically for the movie. Full rules here.

Seeing how times are "rough and tough like leather" and its been a kooky summer anyway, I've been on my grind for anything and everything that I can get my hands on. All sorts of odd jobs: painting doors, moving art, putting bikes together, you name it.

But here's one of my more prominent odd jobs this summer: Got to work on the set for Jay-Z's "Run This Town" video. I was working with the art production team. So basically a lot of the background theatrics like superfoam boards, fire resistant walls, props and all them menacing black pipes etc. You can credit them to yours truly.

And I'm still looking for work. Ha! Feel free to hit me up if anybody's got any production/manual labor/creative slots available. Anything except porn, really. (Yep, I'm soliciting on the Lab Blog, sue me.)

cubicBRM.jpg

In preparation for the big show coming August 26th @ Mercury Lounge, I caught up with Cubic Zirconia and asked them a few things:
Questions for Todd Weinstock
M: For Cubic Zirconia have you changed your guitar set up? Describe what pedals and amps you prefer and why...
TW: I have totally changed my guitar setup for cz... I use this little amp called the little lanell. It's really incredible, sounds like a huge amp but it has 1 6 and 1/2 inch speaker. Its crazy, the dude who invented it is brilliant. Besides that I'm still using my jazzmaster as main guitar, that's my baby. And as far as pedals go it varies alot from show to show and recording.. Still kindof inventing what my sound is in this band. Staples are rattle crow, analog man chorus , and vodka modded ratt.

M: Before Cubic Zirconia, describe your experience what it was like getting signed to Warner, when that was, and how that came about.
TW: Getting signed to Warner was definately a whrilwind experience. I as very young when it first happened and they definitely helped me get to where I am today. At the same time I was young and didn't know alot and it was really a time that major labels were not selling as much music and didn't know what to do. I made alot of mistakes and so did they but I learned so much and really I look at it as it was all to get to here.

M: Have you met a lot of people who have the same foot condition as you? Any advice to the world after years of your own research?
TW: I have met a bunch of people who have been diagnosed with the same foot problem I have but really no one who has it exactly like I do. Most peoples pain is more in the heel but mine was in my arch and didn't behave like a typical case of plantar fascitis. My advice to the world is don't listen to traditional doctors for treatment of this. There is no clear cut way to cure it and doctors jump at the chance to cut you open. I've had 4 surgeries and fucked myself up worse. These days it's much better but it's always still there somewhat. Honestly yoga has really been the thing that's saved me.

Questions for Tiombe Lockhart
M: I recently read your article in BRM magazine. Now that you have a new CZ record out, do you feel now your audience understands you expanding your palette, or are people just dumb?
TL: Some people really still love i got you and stay with me. others really love all my music. you can't please everyone. cubic zirconia seems like a natural progression to me.

M: What was the first band or group you played in. when and where?
TL: I sang in the choir of my southern baptist church in atlanta, ga

Questions for Nick Hook
M: Before you guys toured the UK you mentioned that to be effecient at touring these days you would scale back your gear to be super minimal and travel lite. do you still feel that way now? gear differences when touring by van vs touring by plane?
NH: yea gear has been significantly scaled back in this project. going on tour and leaving behind the 100 pound moog synth is liberating becuase you don't have to worry about it getting stolen, or broken on tour and midi never goes out of tune. We have spent time sampling the analog gear and drum machines that were used in recording the tunes. I think keeping the setup consistent is the key so you can really dig in be the best at it.. Maybe a guitar cab or an extra drum comes, but im happy with laptop//mpk49/koascillator for this and drop the lime.

M: Some jackasses say blogs will be record labels in the future. Whats your take on that? Will the world implode with too much bad music floating around.
NH: I think the more niche based things are, the easier it is to seek out really what you love, whether it's some weirdo left field shit or the latest nickleback offshoot. I think that not being able to make money off our art is what will ultimately be the culprit of the world imploding since people have to work long hours at bad jobs, taking away important creative brainpower

thanks! See you all Wednesday Aug 26th @ Mercury Lounge NYC !

I barely remember playing at BEMF, oh maybe because of all the beer bong chugging at STIP VIII combined with Into The Void melting my brain. Big up to Snack and C'mish who were killing it at The Jungle on Tuesday and Chris Hires who was playing jams up the street at Brooklyn Bowl on Tuesday. bg-suburbs.jpg
boy genius is stuck in suburbs of Maryland for 3 weeks... i went to visit him and we instantly fell into the suburban lifestyle of our high school years... hitting up Barnes and Noble (aka suburban mind stimulation center), malls (zumiez!), gigantor grocery stores, those fruitless blockbuster runs... all that was missing was a t-bell run...

an interesting phenomenon happening in the DC burbs is that major grocery chains like Giant and Safeway are closing locations... in come the opportunistic koreans... they open up these "international markets" and all the mexis, koreans, indians come calling... these places kill it. they're grimier than their american counterparts, but they have more of a market type feel with food stalls, cheap produce, and cheesy signage and balloons everywhere...

What up, I picked up the test pressing of my EP today..
winxcass1.jpg
I wanted the spine to be bold, in the spirit of this Winx cassingle...

One of the tracks that has been getting a lot of burn off the EP is a remix that Star Eyes & Mayster did.
stareyes&mayster.jpg
I told them to include a picture of themselves during the sessions, and write a few words about the making of...so here ya go :

Star Eyes & Mayster Liquid Vision
We made a few remixes of “Triple Chrome”—a sort of freestyley jam with Star Eyes rapping, then a kind of techy Miami bass thing—in Mayster’s bat cave in Queens, but none of them was feeling totally right. So we asked ourselves, “What would Egg Foo do?” The answer was obvious: make soup. A few hours, and two bowls of Mayster’s homemade rosól (a Polish chicken-beef soup), later, we rolled out this Liquid Vision, a dubstep slow burner that adds some dark underwater wobble wobble to the vocals and car starts of Michna’s original summer jam. Afterwards we had another kind of liquid vision—too many beers and the photobooth at Union Pool.

Words cannot describe how amazing Andy Kessler was. I have so much respect for this guy, and was honored to not only have some of the best skate sessions of my life with him, but also to be able to bro down with him after the session. (RE:EDIT)

Tomorrow night I have Bullion in town all the way from the UK to drop some beats on us at the Scion party, come early as he goes on at midnight

BULLION

When I started hunting down tracks for BEAT MACHINE the first person I rang up was this kid Bullion from London. All I had heard from him at the time was this Pet Sounds In The Key of D album, that all the LA beatheads (esp KUTMAH) had been rinsing out the previous summer. To call it a mash up of Dilla and The Beach Boyz Pet Sounds is a criminal understatement. Pet Sounds In D goes so far beyond the novelty of a Grey Album it stands on its own as an original piece of Art. From what I can gather the Dilla portion is really just some drums and the occasional vocal snippet, which Bullion re-chopped and combined with chopped elements of Pet Sounds to make banger after banger. In case you missed it i'm just gonna put the whole thing here for a week, its an injustice for this not to be in you iTunes library.

PET SOUNDS IN THE KEY OF D

I tried to convince him to do a boot of it, but he declined insisting he didnt want to be known as the Beach Boys/Dilla guy. Luckily for us he is know putting out material thru one of my favorite labels of the moment ONE-HANDED MUSIC, like this YOUNG HEARTACHE EP which I have been burning the fuck out of since it's release.

If Bullion's American debut isn't enough to wet your whistle check the rest of the line-up for tomorrow night...

So, with the good people at MAD DECENT recognizing new-age Dominican acts like Maluca, I get a bit nostalgic about our music and think back to a rather fond memory of being in DR when one of the most prominent Bachata (DR Country music) artists, Anthony Santos, was just breaking onto the scene.

See, back then a well-off aunt of mine and her husband owned the most happening club in Puerto Plata, "La Brisa," and one night--when I was barely 10 going on to 11 years of age--I was in there eating free food and dancing with 30+ year old women. Anyway, point being that I'm sure I remember Mr. Santos performing this song that night:

Commix is the real deal... A commentator on discogs.com put it best: "They're some kind of new painted and coloured walls in the old and cold streets of dnb"

obviously a youtube clip does them no justice, but you can hear those crispy percussions at least..

I'll be hitting the road in September with Kid Koala for a small US/Canada tour in support of a project called "The Slew". Also coming with us is the talented and very funny Adira Amram. If she doesn't make you laugh or cry, you are dead inside.

Coming to your town soon; that is, if you happen to live in or near the following ten cities:

9/23 VANCOUVER, BC / Commodore Ballroom
9/24 SEATTLE, WA / Nectar
9/25 SAN FRANCISCO, CA / Independent
9/26 COSTA MESA, CA - Detroit Bar (Kid Koala Slew DJ Set)
9/27 LOS ANGELES, CA / Key Club
9/30 BROOKLYN, NY / Music Hall Of Williamsburg
10/1 BOSTON, MA / Great Scott
10/2 MONTREAL, QC / La Tulipe
10/3 TORONTO, ON / Lee's Palace
10/4 CHICAGO, IL / Abbey Pub

More on the Slew here.

We will most likely never do this tour again after this run, so come rock out with us if you can.
See y'all there!
