What have I learned in 3 months of living on my own in Harlem? One, that I can work the hell out of a tight-ass, double doorway while carrying my bike and still having to use my keys to open both doors. Two, that passing by your neighbors enough times, no matter how tight your pants are, eventually earns you their daily "what's up" respect. And three, having such a small place to live in really lets you know what your true interests are, apparently a skateboard, some music/hipster magazines, cd's, a bike, camcorder, and a computer. Awesome!

-Rainey

P.S. I'm outta Harlem in about a month. No hard feelings.

Some of you may have seen my live show which includes GranCentral on Saxophone/Efx and Cru Jonez on Drums/Sampler.
Cru recently dropped his debut 7" single, and the last batch of units are available here at the lab on limited green vinyl

CruJonezPress.jpg

After a long tour, we all finally have a show back home in BK on Aug 6th. I caught up with the man
for a quick Q & A:

M: What has been getting heavy rotation in your ipod lately?
CJ: I've been listening a lot to "Los Angeles" by Flying Lotus and also "Untrue" by Burial.  Both of these albums have such distinct sounds that are maintained through the entirety of the album, particularly "Untrue".  It sounds like different takes on a similar theme.  It reminds me of Photek's "Form and Function" in that way.  I was also bumping "Speakerboxxx" the other day.  I remember when that double album came out everybody was so floored by "The Love Below" that Speakerboxxx almost became like an afterthought, but that shit is so dope.  I love those horn arrangements, and the production is ridiculous.  Also, "Desire" by Pharoahe Monch.  He's the sickest.

M: Yeah-plus they rock a good amount of SP-1200 on "Speakerboxxx"
What foods are you feeling lately? Any neighborhood go-to's that you rock?
CJ: This new BBQ place is my neighborhood called Whiskey Sunday's is pretty good.  The brisket sandwich is dope, and they mash a hell of a sweet potato.  Nice beer selection, too.  A place like that a block from your house can get dangerous.

M: What sounds can we expect with your new Cru Jonez material?
CJ: I'm trying to aim for a more unified sound on this next album, kind of picking one aesthetic and running with it.  I guess the newer stuff is a bit more of a lo-fi, recorded in the basement kind of sound.  Sonically, I'm trying to match the grittiness of a lot of the late 50's-60's soul and jazz that I grew up listening to and mix that with some of the synthesized aspects and production techniques of modern electronic music.

M: I heard your live show is ill like Mister ill Dill Oil Spill (that was an old alias of mine). Where can the people catch you?
CJ: August 6th @ Public Assembly in Brooklyn! (check the flyer)

Montgomery County Maryland's own Oguchi Onyewu made his debut for AC Milan last night, the first American to ever play for the Rossoneri. HUGE step for American soccer. Despite having poor marking last night (one very costly that lead to an easy, and nasty, goal), he made an impact in the air on the attack. It still shocks me that a guy like that growing up in the States didnt pursue Football or Basketball. The guy would be a monster Tight End in the NFL.

iverson_lue.jpg

[From ESPN.com]
The Memphis Grizzlies appear to be the club with the most interest in Allen Iverson. I'm told the chances of Iverson going to Miami are minuscule. But for reasons that are as much about money as about basketball, the Grizzlies are contemplating adding Iverson to their club. That doesn't mean it's going to happen, but it could.

Iverson has been humbled a bit. He realizes that interest in him is low and that he's in for a severe pay cut. But he's also motivated. His mentality right now is that he'll take a one-year deal, play his butt off to re-establish himself as an elite player, then cash in next summer.

TTLAB BEHIND THE SCENES: DA HARDY BOYZ: HERE I AM VIDEO

I thought I'd take a second to let you in on some of the behind the scenes action for Da Hardy Boyz: Here I Am Video, which we officially released today.

Sometime around WMC my friend ABBY KOOCHER

russianabby.jpg
GOTH ABBY

and I were hanging out and she suggested we make a video during her break from working on SILENT LIBRARY for MTV. People are always offering to make videos, but being that its a lot of fucking work it usually doesn't pan out. Abby on the other hand is a soldier so it did!

She told me to come up with a basic idea so I started digging. One of my favorite video's of all time has always been New Order's Confusion.

When I played it for her she was like "um ok you want a video with you rapping at a party scene," which was pretty funny to me. The reason I love this video is because of how ill it makes NY look, The Funhouse, 42nd st, those train stations, etc. Obviously that gritty energetic city is gone, but its still the best city in the world and I felt it was time for a video to pay homage to it again. The funniest response I got to this idea was when I told Eli, his answer "yeah good luck with that one buddy."

After we had finished shooting we ran into Alex from Holy Ghost! at some loft party. We were talking about our upcoming videos and one of us was like "you've seen the Confusion video right?" Alex's jaw dropped and thought we were taking a piss because their upcoming video was a shot for shot remake of the New Order clip! I think theirs came out really great too (however remember their DFA budget was quite a bit larger than our MS budget in all fairness).

For our music film we didn't want to jack the whole New Order steez as much as get inspiration from it. You'll see that some parts, like the pizza scene are obviously taken directly from the original. Other sections like the part when we go to EVR and Eli, Spank and XXXchange are chilling is supposed to be the modern equivalent of Arthur Baker going to break the record at the club (shout to Eli Bean Benitez). Also I would say at least 50% of our video was just freestyled on the spot by Abby, which worked out well in our opinion.

Another funny memory I have is when PH came to hide out in the party scene and said something like "I don't know this isn't really a party song." Why does everybody assume that Da Hardy Boyz only want to party? Oh yeah right, that's why.

Anyway that's what it was. Thank you to everyone who came thru for us, especially ABBY, Michna, Skye, Spindles, Terry, Frog, 7 Spring St and Spanish Berlin.

Now we present to you DA HARDY BOYZ in HERE I AM!!! Enjoy!!!

NOW LET'S PARTY!!!!

this is from the newer section that explores the human origin. Turkana Boy is a nearly complete skeleton from 1.6 MILLION YEARS AGO! I was having out of body existential moments as I read this text. totally mind-blowing.

speaking of old stuff, check out the bench in front of the NY store. gonna have someone build us a new one (finally). bogman built this one back in the day. it belongs in the DJ Hall of Fame. anyone who's done the half-squat, this is gross sit on it knows what i mean...

nathist-07.jpg
lastly, the city is starting to get its summer stank on. seeing lots of rats in the east village and that smell is wafting up from chinatown. 13th between 1st and 2nd is especially gross... was sitting in a bar having a beer, but had to leave early cause of the trash smell and rats parading in front of the door.... it's only gonna get worse.

failure = nachos bell grande

the beauty of the Nacho Supreme is in the ratio of chips and toppings. if managed properly with hot sauce packets, you could have flavorful hot bites until the end. the first couple chips off the Supreme are magical.

that can not be said about the dreaded Nachos Bell Grande. although a good idea in concept, the Bell Grande is always a disappointment. ratios are way off and there's never enough sour cream. you always end up with a half plate of chips and no toppings.

Just god word of a thing going down in my hood tonight, Shaeer of HOuse of House is doing this party, I cant quite figure out exactly whats going on, but it starts at 10 and goes till who knows when..... He plays great music and in this unpredictable summer im staying as far away from all things "nightclub" so a party at a ramdom studio space in the Les seems right up my alley....

sometimes i find myself pondering things like quantum physics, spacetime, our place in the universe and the remnants humans will leave for future races of aliens to discover. I can't help to wonder what the fuck these advanced alien species will think when they uncover gems like this.

what up i released a new EP today:
EggstraTurbo.jpg
here's the tracklisting:
1. The Dust Off
2. Believe In It (Eliot Lipp Remix)
3. Triple Chrome Dipped (Osborne Remix)
4. Triple Chrome Dipped (Star Eyes & Mayster Liquid Vision)
5. The Joy Of Your Dome
eggstraSP12000.jpg
to produce track 1, I used mostly old trusty Mr. SP and Logic and various synths. There are some trombones in there run thru plug ins. I tried to use more of the SP's filters, which are something that I've never heard a computer come close to emulating. Also, if any of you use bitcrusher plug ins, just so you know, those don't touch the SP either. call me the bitter old man. c'mon i'm on twitter at least once a week leave me alone. i just think that investing in outboard gear (these days) shows a little bit of care and commitment to your craft. You got a crack of Reasons? cool , so does my 19 year old brother
f9000.jpg
to produce track 5, I used the Forat F-9000 and a Yamaha CS-80 synth. The Forat was on loan to me for a couple of months from a legendary dude from miami/gainesville called Adam. He bought it on ebay from ebay gear legend Rider. Somehow I became the shipping manager on the transaction. Once I was done making beats with it, I shipped it from NY to FL, and of course it got damaged.. the thing is the size of 2 mpcs and is mega heavy. (I got close up pics of it I just gotta find them) So the interesting thing about it is that you can pitch down your drums and it adds this myserious grit to them. Sort of unlike anything I've heard. More sheen than the SP, and also futuristically clunky.
CS80_2.jpg
The Yamaha CS-80 was a synth trade I did with Luke's roommate. (Temporary) synth trades are one of the funnest things to do, cause you can lend out your baby (in my case the Korg MS 20) and then you appreciate it more when you get it back, and possibly even use it more on new shit. (The CS-80 is also the most unportable synth.)
I'll try to get the remixers to say something for the blog... in the meantime, I know the Star Eyes mix is getting burn at all the big festivals. From Rothbury to Pitchfork Fest..
Oh, and the EP should be available here, at TTL, soon.
