Heading up to NY for a long weekend tomorrow.

Catch me spinning at the Cubic Zirconia record release party at Santos on Thursday. Cubic Z + DJ Assault + Head Automatica + Dâm Funk? Where else can you catch all these completely disjointed acts all under one roof on the same night? This should be nuts. Also, cop the screenprinted show poster we made.

Check into these guys if you haven't yet...

Friday I'll be at Savalas with Cousin Cole and The Heat (Jonny Blaze and Stereofaith) for Senari's monthly Panty Raid party.

Happy 4th of July.

I ain't mad at this event...there's some serious producer heavyweights on the panel and it certainly looks a helluva lot more productive than The Mixshow Power Summit ever was...but i think by far the best thing, Diddy is nowhere in site (taking full credit for songs he never produced) big up to Sha Money XL and Encore for taking the crown...

"I was bitten by the nostalgia bug a few weeks year ago listening to an old Jackson 5 record and got kind of carried away, so I did a mix of Michael Jackson joints for Rub Radio (http://brooklynradio.net/the-rub/). I started in 1970 with the Jackson 5 and went all the way up through 2001, not always mixing because I wanted to go in chronological order. I skipped over some of the more obvious songs (ABC, I Want You Back, Billie Jean, PYT) - if anybody is dying to hear those, please come see me DJ in real life. I hope this mix brings up as many happy memories and good feelings for you when you listen to it as it did for me making it."

"CAN I GET SOME HELP!?!??!"

Hello Boy Genius Bloggermaniacs,

You know I'm not big with embedding youtube clips, as i feel that the Lab Blog has way too many youtube posts (and flyers), but you GOTTA see this one. The Roots performed "How I Got Over" off their upcoming album on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night, and just absolutely murdered it! Look at the J.B.'s-esque formation and step!! Check out Thought steppin in his Air Force Ones towards the end. The Roots on Late Night is the best thing to happen to TV since the NBA paired GP and CWebb together on their network studio show ("Triple! Trizzle-dizzle!")

-its the best soundsystem in germany
-possible appearance by techno viking
-flaps on the windows that will open for a second (at 8am) when the music hits an epic climax
-people get there at 4am and stay til 1pm

Anyone over the age of 21 who looks at this website can recite the theme to Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. My friend Adam Garcia recently put me up on the Italian overdubbed version...

His co-worker Margherita just moved to Philly from Italy a couple of years ago and was kind enough to re-translate it back into English:

"Willy, the Prince of Bel Air"

This is the maxi-story about how my life
changed, overturned, upside down has ended up to be.
Sitting on two feet here with you
I'll talk to you about Willy supercool of Bel Air.

Playing basketball with my friends I grew up
I had a ball, wow so cool every minute.
My tough days ran away like this
in-between a mega-shot in the basket and a movie of Spike Lee.

Then my ball thrown a bit higher
went exactly on the head of those vikings down there.
The most tough got mad, made a spinning top of me
and my mom worried told me "Go away to Bel Air".

I prayed her implored her but to my uncle she wants me to go
she packed my suitcases and said "Go your own way"
after giving me a kiss and a ticket to leave
with the stereo in the ears I said "Here is better to make the tyres screech".

First class, it's a trip!
freshly squeezed orange juice in crystal glasses.
If this is the lifestyle that people have in Bel Air
hmmmm for me then is not that bad.

I called a yellow cab with my tested whistle
like in formula 1 I felt big-headed.
An all new life is exploding for me,
go full power take me to Bel Air.

Oh what a giddy house, I feel already filthy rich
the previous life smells like old.
Look now people who is in the track
the prince Willy the nutty of Bel Air.

...

Wow.

Went to check out Major Lazer at SOB's Saturday night. Diplo & Switch didn't take the stage until just before 2am and it was at least 100 degrees in the venue but it really didn't seem like anyone cared. The place was packed and 77KLASH kept the crowd hype from start to finish. The visuals were on point (including the two sexy body gals dancing on stage btw.) Nina Sky as well as a few others performed and they even threw out a bunch of lazer guns into the audience. Pon De Floor was easily one of the biggest tunes of the night...

And here's the official video for the current single called Hold The Line ft. Lex & Santigold...

The album is out now and the vinyl/Cd is selling fairly well at the store so big up to Mad Decent on the continued success of the project.

NEW LAB RADIO

(click box, duh!)

This month I brought out the Swedish based duo SUPER VIRAL BROTHERS

SuperVinyl Brothers.jpg

I already blogged about these guys but i'll say something quick. Basically its one of the dudes from Dadalife making the beats (electroish) and this dude from Akron, OH singing (SA-RAish) and it equals up to the most feeling I've heard in dance music in a long time. So listen in and don't be afraid of Black people making music good again!

otherwise we moved DANCE CLASS to one of my favorite spots in nyc, 205. Tonight we have my favorite west coaster (THEE) MIKE B!

Nick Catchdubs and I just went to Australia. It's weird how a lot of the "underground" DJs associated with Turntable Lab are BIG down there. In the US it is a huge stretch for us to get played on commercial radio but when we go down there, it's nothing to do interviews on radio, TV, get magazine covers, and so forth. It's the P of the IM (that's Power of the Internet, Mister). Anyhow check out photos, my interview in Sneaker Freaker (and Nick's) and my mix for Triple J (national radio in Australia) - http://www.flashinglightslightslights.com/dropbox/Ayres-JJJ.mp3 (right click - save target as). tracklist here.

Went dumpster diving for most of my kitchen needs. NYU (and all college) students throw out mad good shit.

Also got me a hand-me-down futon from another end.

Here's some music to get you started...made this mix for a runway show years ago and people always ask me about it whenever i play it in the store so why not spread the love...i'll call this one A Summatime Version Excursion...

Prince's B-Day is right around the corner, so I thought I'd share this edit i did a couple years back...

cpu_blu.jpg

Did you ever hear the story about how Prince once tipped me $100 if I would play One Nation Under A Groove all the way thru? Or the time he got in the booth, dj'd with me and reprimanded me for cursing on the mic on NYE at Teddy's?

well for those you'll have to check my JEMZOIRS on:

DJ Equal just sent me this interesting mix compiling some of the songs used in classic skate videos. I can probably speak for many DJs who were heavily influenced by all the eclectic sounds heard in skate flicks throughout the last 20 years. I remember the first time i saw Girl and Chocolate's "Mouse" video back in 96', i was blown away by all the original sample Funk & Soul bangers used in the film. An interesting story many of you might not know, DJ Eric Duncan who is one half of NYC's Rub n'Tug and DFA's Still Going was the guy responsible for compiling all those classic rare groove tunes for the video. He lived in L.A. with Keenan Milton (R.I.P) and Gino Ianucci at the time who were both prominent pro's featured in the film. Here is their short but very classic video part and a link to DJ Equal's excellent mix. Tracklisting is here

Murked or Freaked?

alg_david_carradine.jpg

BANGKOK, June 5 -- Thai police officers investigating the death of David Carradine, the American actor who made his name in the "Kung Fu" television series in the 1970s, say he most likely died of asphyxiation, possibly when an autoerotic sex game went wrong.

Carradine, 72, was found naked in a closet in an upscale Bangkok hotel on Thursday with cords around his neck and his genitals. The police are checking DNA found on the cords, but say they found no signs of a struggle, suggesting that Carradine might have either tied himself up or submitted voluntarily to his incapacitation.

Much respect to The Gonz who recently celebrated his 40th birthday. Dude's definitely getting up there but he's still ripping! I must say, this is a huge inspiration to any skater still going for it in their 30s...here's a classic overlooked part from him...

And here's Four Star Clothing's recent "Day In The Life" with the legend...

the coolest thing about new york (or the coolest thing about the old new york),
is that no matter your interest, there's always a store or place to get your fill. sadly, many of my favorite used bookstores in the city have moved or gone out of business.

on a random walk in the west village, i was pleasantly surprised to discover one that I've never encountered. I only had a chance to investigate the window display, but i'm guessing this particular store specializes in first editions and signed copies. I don't collect them, but the selection had me drooling... so much historical weight. sorry, didn't write down the name or location, but it's near burger destination Corner Bistro.
