Lately, weekly and monthly gigs have been a heavily talked about subject with me and my friends. I think with the internet and technology enabling anyone to play music, the odds of throwing a successful event on the regular nowadays is like hitting the lottery. I can only speak from my personal experience - for the two regular events that have done well in my career, I've had A TON of things fail and that's pre-internet & pre-serato. So when I see other long-running events around the country, like the Rub in Brooklyn, Yo Son in Seattle or the Rootdown & Do-Over in LA, it's always renews my faith...

nastys08.jpg

With all that said, I have two events that have been going on in Austin for some time now. My Monday night weekly is at a grungy old bar, near the University of Texas called NASTY'S. I've been doing my thing there (w/ an excellent cast of dj's) since the summer of 1996. Back then, a multi-genre (rooted in Hip Hop) dj event was a rarity in these parts. It took a few months for folks to take to the idea, but by the spring of 1997, it turned into a monster. Since then, we have had our ups and downs, but there's no other place where you can see a diverse crowd (hippies to hipsters to tall tee rap fans) during the week. The crowd is consistent and I think that can be attributed to the level of dj'ing and selection. This is something that I am really proud of...

rtcpill.jpg

rtc.jpg

The other is Rock the Casbah. It's an 80's party that takes place quarterly. I started this in January 2001 and it's been going well ever since. Imagine 450+ in a live music venue - sweating, dancing and singing along to 80's jams. It's all about having fun, getting wasted, falling on your face and getting back up...

Btw, the Clash's video for Rock the Casbah was filmed in Austin. City Coliseum RIP.

Considering the way things are these days, I am very thankful. Word to everyone from coast to coast that's holding it down week to week. Keep keeping on...

If you haven't noticed, the online store had a major overhaul.

we're still in the process of working out all the bugs...
we're feeling about 85% complete on it, just need to correct some code, spacing, user issues etc. if you're a designer, you know my PAIN.

so as we get into the last push, we're inviting you to check out the site, re-familiarize yourselves, make some orders, and give feedback. as an incentive, we're doing possibly our biggest sale ever as a thanks for putting up with our old archaic website for so long and giving your valuable feedback...

please send feedback emails to redesign@turntablelab.com

second big announcement is that one-time Lab intern / Pro-Squad member Roger Yamaha aka Yas has soft-launched Turntable Lab Tokyo!

In addition to a select choice of Lab goods (Yas has the best taste in the world, not kidding), Yas is aiming to create a community space for Japan's DJ scene. There's seats to chill out at and even a mini-cafe... here are some pics, more info coming.

ok, so i wasn't gonna write anything about the CL final, but a good friend keeps bugging me that I bailed with the coverage after my team (arsenal) lost... etc. ok, CL coverage has been ridiculous (more than the Super Bowl), but here are my modest observations of the game:

1) watching Messi when he doesn't have the ball is hilarious. he looks like he's taking a stroll through Union Square on a saturday morning. he might get up to a light jog, but most of the time, he's strolling. the comparisons of his header to a salmon is pretty funny too.

2) everybody and their mother is in line to bone Xavi + Iniesta, but I thought it was most telling that Rooney proclaimed Iniesta as the world's best player. my friend might kill me if i don't mention how Messi deserves credit for the midfielders' success, but i think that's a given.

3) watching Vidic get schooled was like watching the end of Rocky IV, but none of us were expecting it. i was disappointed that Vidic didn't drop any payback... a la his forearm shivers.
rocky_4_movie_image_ivan_drago__2_.jpg

cristiano_ronaldo_shorts.jpg
4) how ridiculously rat-boy was Ronaldo... all those cheapshots on Puyol aka He-Man? those confrontations showed us what class and class-less is all about. how you gonna mess with He-Man?

he-man.jpg

5) what about the shortest CL final team celebration ever. they bolted after the confetti explosion.

6) eto's heroin celebration?

7) next year, let's see the clash of the most beautiful... barca vs. arsenal... cesc and messi will have sex on the pitch.. no-homo.

ok, here's what my argentine friend has to say, he's about to explode:
"But I think an honest confession that Barca demonstrated some of the prettiest and most effective soccer that Premiership watchers have ever seen against their New York Yankees is out there a little. What is not out there is that the media - including your blog - have spent too much time overlooking every other league out there. The top 4 teams in England are bad ass. That is it. Many of the best - including THE BEST - players and teams are outside of "whiteboy" land. It's time to open your eyes.
Show me one media outlet that has said that about themself ????????????????????????????????????????????????????"

until transfers get heated up, over and out.

Remember Our Troops

Hope all my 'Boy Genius Bloggermaniacs' had a great weekend.
I hope you enjoyed all the pool parties, BBQ's, rounds of golf, sex (both straight and chi-chi), pick-up sports, and the drama of the NBA Playoffs. For those who do not live in the United States, it is one of the best weekends of the year, especially on the east coast, where Freedom and Democracy are rich in the air. I hope everyone (including those reading this in other countries) had a chance to remember those who have donned the uniform of our armed forces (the greatest the world has ever witnessed), especially those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve this amazing country. It's humbling thinking about them (and their families), about their bravery and courage. So remember, all that petty shit that you personally deal with and bitch about everyday is nothing compared to what our Troops do. They are the best among us. Keep things in perspective and never forget we have people in this world that are protecting us and helping others, all politics aside. This blog post goes out to you.
We'll always love Big Poppa and our Troops.

so i was at a neighborhood bar this wknd and there was a laptop-only dj, no turntables, no serato, no controller, not even using headphones! for some reason, i got an urge to twitter: "laptop-only djs must die." this was apparently my most popular tweet cause of all the RTs it got... but it wasn't just blind hatred, here's the backstory:

to laptop dj dood:
1) please mind your sound quality. my ears were bleeding from all the treble. if you're playing some mp3s, make sure they're good quality (duh), but more importantly, every track needs to be eq'ed! sound quality is as important as blending.

2) please use headphones, you're taking all the soul away from the artform with your visual beatmatching and typepad fading. so not sexy either.

3) if you don't want to use headphones, i expect you not to train wreck every third song. but really, why not just play a mix then?

LA LA BIG CITY OF DREAMZ – BUT EVERYTHING IN LA GETS CRUSHED WHEN JEMZ IS ON THE SCENE

jemzbeach.jpg

Yeah I’m here. Weathers perfect, pools are open, the ladies are on roller skates, the tacos are calling, KCRW is bumping in the whip and all the while I’m turning a little bit more Goth every second. I’m currently sitting with Hoff in Venice Beach (by far the best part of LA) attempting to finally get this MOBRODER (the Apocolypse Now of mix cds) shit in the can, the saga continues…

Meanwhile I’ll be on the scene (at TTLAB all Friday afternoon) so come see me there or at one of these fine events…

Friday is my first time djing in the OC

Early Saturday I’m doing this Scion Art Show (she blinded me with scions!)…

Late Saturday I’m with my favorite DJ Thee Mike B and the legendary Keoki at Blow Up

Lastly Mad Mondays Memorial Day Pool Party (POOL CREW IN FULL EFFECT!!!)…

*Note how my flyer placement gets lower and lower every trip to this city. When I moved here 3 & 1/2 years ago I was headlining Raves (not true there weren't any Raves here then, just mashup), but I was on top of the world. Hopefully by two more trips my name will be so low on the flyer it will be below the sponsorship logo's (now that's low).

NY doesn't know the meaning of raw until you've visited Detroit. Our friend Ernie(Erno The Inferno) is Ghostly's Detroit rep out there and brought us out for their Tour Detroit party. The only knowledge I had of Detroit prior to that was through their musical legends and from Minimal Man's stories and blog posts.

Remember this Gay Packard Plant one?

We actually drove by it. You can't see from the picture, but this shit is like 15 blocks long! They used to throw some of the craziest raves in there. I can only imagine the madness.
packard.jpg

So the rumors are true, The city is in shambles, abandoned buildings are everywhere, and jobs are mad scarce. But despite the ruins, it's one the most inspirational places I've ever visited. The city seeps soul and funkiness like no other and when it comes to parties, they do it up right over there!!!

One of the bigger parties over there is called "Funk Night" and is thrown by these cats Frank Raines and Bill Hales who literally pack like 1200 people into a warehouse with HUGE soundsystems to play rare funk 45's till the early morn. It's literally like a rave for funk and was voted #1 for America's Best Party by Paper Magazine. Coming from NY your like, funk rave? I didn't believe it either, until I saw the video footage. After 5 min of mayhem, I was sold. They also have sick funk bands playing live between the sets, like Will Sessions, who's members also record with Mayer Hawthorne. A perfect way to balance out the DJ sets with a live soulful vibe. Funk Night NY and Funk Night LA has been rumored - I'll keep you posted.

Here's a pic from a surprise B-day party for Frank Raines...
Frank-bday.jpg

DJ Dez from Slum Village was on the decks. The range and mixing of his live set that night killed it so hard, I was thinking, "This is better than any mixtape we carry!" Trust.
djdez.jpg

Here's the Tangent gallery where we spun at. They used to throw really big raves here, but it's been out of commission for a bit. Everyone was psyched to see Ernie and the crew reviving it. All I gotta say is 2 HUGE speakers and 6 subs makes for a proper comeback.

10pm
tourdetroit-empty.jpg

2pm
tourdetroit-full.jpg

Some chick even danced so hard she broke her damn shoe.
tourdetroit-shoes.jpg

Also, the community over there was amazing. Everyone knows each other and although there's a lot of haters(wouldn't you be if your city looked like the apocolypse?), the support for music is enough to make a NY city dude like me shed a tear. You have rock dudes coming to your disco party, hip hoppers checking out house shows, house DJ's checking out hip hop shows, and so on... Seriously, when's the last time you invited your "hip hop" friend to come check out a night of minimal techno? It's the closest I've seen to "One Love" in a while.

Lastly, hipsters dont exist over there. They're way too smart to be tricked by some flashy, nu-rave shit. Motown came from there, Techno came from there, Dilla came from there. They got Moodymann, Derrick May, Theo Parrish, Omar S, Kyle Hall(17 years old), Mayer Hawthorne holding it down - You really think they're trippin' on your designer v-neck and your newest blog house track? Hell naw...

On that note - Snack and I started a new party @ APT. I know its a bit late to promote, but if it's not too late - get over there! It's the first of many this summer. If you haven't heard of Duane Harriott, He's one half of Bim Marx with Jorge Velez(aka Professor Genius) and part of the infamous Negroclash Crew. Needless to say, it's an honor to throw down recs with him. It's free so, Come and get funked!

offtherecord-450-duane-rgb.jpg

Be on the lookout - new Bim Marx 12" dropping soon!
- Enjoy the summer night yall

Today, I have this high-school in DC anthem on repeat in my VW.
Back when this track came out, it was fun calling girls 'chickenheads' cause 99% of white girls didnt know what it meant. White girls thought that a 'chickenhead' was a girl that just gave head, cause of the neck-thrusting motion that chickens make. I still bet a majority of white girls dont know what it means.

We just launched a monthly FG podcast series (the FOOLCAST, natch) done up all nice by Toronto's Nacho Lovers. The resulting "I Nacho NY" mix is, in their words, an "ode to New York house from the 1990's. Everything is either by a NY artist, NY remixer, was released on a NY Label, or just fit that New York 'sound' of the time. This is stuff we are heavily influenced by when it comes to making music."

Download the podcast (and subscribe to the whole series to get future mixes as soon as they drop!) at iTunes or via your favorite RSS reader at the FG podcast page (tracklist is up there too).

Tony says that vinyl for Kid Sister's "Get Fresh" (with Zombie Nation + Alex Gopher remixes) and Congorock's "Runark" are both on their way, so keep checking the lab for those. Next up are singles from DJ Gant Man, Alexander Robotnick, Crookers, Bag Raiders, Malente and more, including the loudly whispered-about debut of DUCK SAUCE...

Mos Def just announced a surprise show at the House of Blues Hollywood this Thursday.
We have one pair of tickets to give away, so we're want everyone to bring photos
of your Mos Def VINYL collection (no CD's or itunes screen shots!!!), with your contact info
to the LA Store by Wednesday at 5 pm.
The winner will be chosen that night by the store staff.
Tickets are still available if you want to purchase them through the usual suspects.
I'm hearing good things about the album,
so I'm hyped about the show to hear the new tracks out live.

Mos_la.jpg

Also, still in the works, but we are most likely going to host a listening party for the
new album on May 28th. June 9th is the official release date.

It's always cool meeting new people who are my age, and then learning later that they were/are a dnb head. Its like a secret past language that was popping off just before the internet...which leads me to...
dannyclubshot.jpg
Interview with Danny Johnson, May 2009.

M: You grew up in the UK? What parts and around what years?
DJ: I was born in Brighton in 77, my entire family is english, we immigrated to Canada when I was 3.

M: Where and when do you remember the first time you heard drum 'n bass/jungle?
DJ: I came up in the house party scene on the Orange County/LA border so I didnt get to LA to party that often until around 99, I first heard jungle properly around 97-98 in a warehouse in downtown los angeles, I didnt know it was jungle at the time, I just called it techno, it wasnt till 99 when I got fully entrenched in the music and culture.

M: At the time , what other genres and artists were your favorite?
DJ: At the time I was listening to bands like the The Adolescents, Sham 69, Coack Sparrer, The Refused, Operation Ivy. Jungle really grabbed my attention because it captured that same energy I got from that stuff I listened to. I also listened to alot of jamaican music from ska to rocksteady so the ragga side of things interested me as well.

M: When you got into drum 'n bass what were the first venues / parties you attended?
DJ: When I really dove into the culture was around the massive era that started around 98-99. Parties like Nocturnal Wonderland, Audiotistic, Narnia, Nation really took things to a new level with numbers spiking to 30-40,000 people. For a few years there were massives every other weekend all year long, those were the only places you could see Andy C, Goldie, Hype, LTJ Bukem, Kenny Ken, ShyFX with Skibadee, GQ, Fearless, and Warren G in one place. It was an incredible thing to experience and I had the pleasure of working on many of those productions. What really pushed the culture locally at the time were all jungle parties like Respect, Wreck-Igintion, Guerilla Warfare, Midnite Bombers, and Drum N Bassics. Local dj's like RAW, Machete, CRS?, Deacon were educating people on the depth of drum n bass.

M: When did you move LA?
DJ: I think it was 2000 when moved to LA, I got a job at a post production house in santa monica and moved up here with a buddy from the neighborhood who also worked in visual effects.

M: Were there any american dnb producers or labels that you had hope for?
DJ: I had and still have high hopes for many of the american crew, I love everything that artists like Hive, Gridlok, Juju, Echo have done. I heard the other day that Hive has packed up his studio, that leaves only Gridlok out of that group who is still active, I started working with Photek around 05 when he created TEKDBZ, we collaborated on a couple of events where we brought out the best dj on the planet, DJ Craze from Miami, the best mc's in the game, Armanni & Sharpness from Philly, and two locals Hochi and Infiltrata, who's production's were next level and introduced somewhat of a drum n bass hip hop hybrid. I believe this camp could have changed the landscape but unfortunately all of the artists were in such demand individually, they all get pulled in different directions and the label never fully launched.

M: Whats your favorite food?
DJ: I like food a lot, sushi tops it, lasagna, pot pies, and im a sucker for french fries too.

M: When did you start Media Contender?
DJ: Media Contender was conceived in 07, We launched the site in Jan of 08.

M: Who is the most famous person Media Contender has interviewed?
DJ: For the most part, we feature people that are virtually unknown but every singe person we feature or interview is someone you should get to know, cause their shit is dope!
dannyandcrewshot.jpg
M: How long have you been doing parties at Proof Bar?
DJ: I partnered up with a party animal that goes by Dirty Nick, this man started throwing parties at Proof a few years ago and had a wacky partner and had to stop the night for a bit, I loved the concept of having drum n bass, electro, bassline, and dubstep all in one night so I came in and asked Nick if he wanted to continue doing it but with me, we have been rocking Proof Bar for close to a year together, we have had some amazing guests come though, and we have managed to keep the night free which makes it more fun for everyone.

M: What do you like about Proof Bar?
DJ: I like the staff, they really work with us on making our night better, and have offered us nothing but support, plus they serve a mean drink, como se dice "wasted"?

M: Any DJ's who have come thru that have really smashed up the place?
DJ: ok lets go! Klever, Treasure Fingers, Villains, LA Riots, Kill The Noise, 12th Planet, Low B, Jokers of the Scene, AC Slater, and Reid Speed have all murdered it, some of them a few times.

Alright there you have it!

If you are in the Santa Ana/Los Angeles area tomorrow night come out!

Pacha Photos Here

What a week! Last Friday was Pacha, and with all humility I had the hip-hop room rammed for four hours. It felt like Lotus again, which is to say end to end commercial bangers and lots of bottles and fake boobs. Playing to a crowd like that is a skill and while I wouldn't want to do it all the time, it feels good to have it. The warmup DJ was playing Be Faithful-type shit before midnight. Biggest reaction I got all night: quick mixing Lean Back intro - In The Club intro - I Get Money intro - Soul Survivor - Oh Yeah. Shameful. Big shout out to E-Rock, Ian Meyer, Project Matt, Smalltown Mike, LSangre, Trouble and Bass, JDH, Dave P, Small Change and everyone else who DJed and partied with us; I missed Surkin but I made it downstairs at 4 AM for Dances With White Girls and he murdered the big room.

The Rub was Saturday and it was super fun as usual. Lloyd and Blu Jemz came through with a bunch of birds and afterwards Jemz tweeted "Haven't been to the RUB in a while. Still one of the best parties in the US hands down." Sincere Jemz! Our seven year anniversary is coming this July 4; more on that soon.

recently, the blog and the world in general are confounding me.
what is happening to humans?
things happen too quickly. inside jokes are no longer inside jokes. food is trendy. bookstores are closing. soccer becomes more important than anything else (btw, see the poll, 50% is shocking, i thought it would be more like 20%!)... you get it, things are changing rapidly... which brings me to the new site re-design launching friday... another Lab era will be lost as we introduce things like grid view lightboxes and ajax! the spirit of the site will be the same, but i can't guarantee it will feel the same. we'll still have the daily and all those nerdish categories and sub-categories... just a new jacket...

fingers crossed, death to bugs

ps. a lot of people have asked for comments on the blog. yes, i want this too. looking to redesign this thing in the near future.

pps. me and frogman are in the early phases of the Lab book... i'm gonna start asking for contributions, so keep an eye out.

we're launching new site re-design next friday...

Ever since we filmed the Hardy video I've been obsessed with watching music videos again (for the first time in like 10 years). Arthur King (Prince of Mixtapes) sent me this one he did recently and I like it so much I had to blog it. Pretty talented dude that Arthur is.

My boy Induce just sent me this video his group Casual Sax shot at the Lab/Mad Decent party at WMC. I can't say i'm in love with the track, it's a bit low-brow for my taste, but none the less so of you will (Perez Hilton loved there last one if that means anything).

Thoughts of the night:

1. The best thing about leaving is coming back
2. Got to leave to realize your potential

I love to return to Sweetzerland. My stepsister Melissa keeps Geneva burnin -even if the authorities closed down all the squats (The finger is for them). Artamis, below, was the last squat to go last year. Genevians love reggae, cannabis and Ice T. This local label invited Brooklyn's own Noble Society just when I was there a week ago. The public was on fire like never in NY.

I know that PH and some others have requested that I get back on the post. Been a minute, I was out in DR for about two months and what not.

Now I'm back and the South Bronx is still real. Mexican dudes getting randomly knocked out in the middle of the street at 3AM by chicken-shit thugs, etc, etc.

But whatever. I'm biking a lot now. Helps keep you relatively invisible in the heat of the night.

I'm just on my anarchist grind. Working on THE RAT COLLECTIVE, a DIY collective that's bent on picking up all your used, under-used, or unused skateboard-related waste and putting it to use in DR. Boards, trucks, wheels, sneakers, etc.

If you feel like you're even vaguely interested just drop me a line at:

Until then, holla if you can spot me behind all the shroud and skate scraps...

It's like 105°F in Mumbai. Hot and spicy just as we like it. Last Friday I visited the neighborhood of Girangaon, where the cotton mills used to be. There was some drumming and dancing action. Check out the smiling jumping drummer on the left. This is pure spirit.

A little later we passed by these shops where you can grain your own masala powder. Each family has its own masala mix made out of secret combination of chili, garlic, ginger and dozen other spices. Mixing, jumbling, mashup, cross over, fusion... Indians had invented it thousands of years ago. Masala is the essence of this city.

Hey Jemz thanks for reminding me to post something once in a while. I'm just fascinated and intimidated by bg's curating of the blog and trying to find ways to reach out to his audience. It seems that even Llodsky was too cerebral to keep up.
