This Sunday, I'll be opening up for Kid Koala at le Poisson Rouge. If i happen to be walking funny, it's because wifey and i are doing the 5-boro bike tour earlier that day.

I'm also doing a set with Terence from my side-project band Taxi Taxi, who also happens to be my cousin.

Monday night come chill with some quiet-time action at House of Yes. Bring a sketchbook, lump of clay, or that sweater you've been meaning to finish knitting. Eric can tell you more about it.

you only have 2 days left to listen to this show, which sucks cause it was one of the best shows i've done. You'll just have to check back every month if you care. Blogging is boring to me.

NEW LAB RADIO

(click box, duh!)

This month my guests were...

UNEMPLOYED LLOYD

Hands down best DJ ever! He did part 1 of a 3 part Hardy Boyz dj set series covering rare 80's influences on the group.

l_76a739a8e8cf417ca665c136035e1309.jpg

DE:SIGNER

This is my man JMV's music/art collective? They are based out of LA but really part French, part Chi-towner and more. All the music they've been sending me has been blowing my mind, so much so I'm trying to get him to work on the Hardy Boyz album with us a bit. Check them out at http://lebranche.net/ were art&music make out.

l_18044fbc8bb76c12fcb7df26af557efe.jpg

STACCATO

What can I tell you about these girls that they haven't told you already (a million times none the less)? They are the homies and play great music. Their set was minimal, duh!

Don’t forget you can always listen to the show on iTunes...

iTunes → Radio → Dance → Turntable Lab LA Radio

ALSO LAB BLOGGERS!!!! How about a few less pictures of dudes on this blog? Here are examples of photos that are making this blog unreadable...

1. Any picture of any male athlete.
2. Any tour recaps where you're in multiple photos standing with different djs/promoters/homies/etc...
3. Any photos of your homies who are "doing their thing"
4. Any photo that is "gay" (irony is dead)
5. Any photo Super Boy Dorkness posts
6. Party photos where the ratio is clearly male dominated
7. Any photo of yourself if you're a dude (except in the case of Roc, am I gay for thinking he's handsome?).

HARDY BOYZ WILL BE OPENING FOR HARVEY NEXT SATURDAY!

you may recall jemz posted a "Mobroder vs Michna" before the night went down
3BKMason.jpg
In my opinion King Britt took the night
4BKMason.jpg
the pics i had of him came out mad blurry, but he held down the room which was probably 1000+ people.. (this pic is of Reverend Billy)

6BKMason.jpg
when i was loading in, so were the ice guys.
7BKMason.jpg
i asked "where do you get the blocks of ice"
9BKMason.jpg
they said "we make it, and if you tried to make it, yours would have mad bubbles in it"
91BKMason.jpg
i said "oh, but if you use a tub that cycles the water while it freezes you get no bubbles"

Last night before playing, me and Sabo were geekin out at the bar watching one of those top 100 sports moment shows - you know, like when dumbass gus frerotte's attempts to display his whiteboy strength to a padded mat [haha!].. it made me wonder though out of all the amazing feats they show and baseball bats to the groin, there is no footage of philly brethren bo kimble lacing his left-hand tourney shots! Wtf? That's some of the strongest shit the world of sports has ever seen apart from moss' means to pay for fines homey [which was not shown either!] Espn, holler at me and the BG if you got 2 production manager openings for your next top 100 wrap-ups!

PARTY TONIGHT IN NYC!
Come thru to Dust La Rock's art show at 8pm, and afterwards you are invited to the Lab party at APT.
derek5.4.3.23.5.jpg
I asked all the DJs on the night to hit me with a top 5 for April 2009. Here's Derek Plaslaiko's:
1. Agaric - "Revuelo" - We Are
2. Stimming - "The Beauty" - DIYnamic
3. Franco Cinelli - "Lost In Acid" (Mikael Stavostrand Remix) - Traut Musik
4. Osborne - "The Count" - Spectral Sounds
5. DOP - "I'm Just A Man" (Tolga Fidan Remix) - Eklo

mike98765432.3.jpg
Mike Servito Top 5:
1. Liz Torres Featuring Ed Crosby - "Can't Get Enough" (Club Mix) -
State Street Records
2. Random Access - "Miomi" - Relief Records
3. Low End Theory - "Big Booty" - Dance Mania
4. Southern Confort Featuring Nolan Epps - "Let's Go Disco" (Sneak's
Perc-epp-pella) - Digital Dungeon Records

Paul Ritch - "Split the line" (dubfire's mega remix)
DHS - "House of god"

eggdrillin.jpg
Michna Top 7:
Tonight I'm playing all vinyl, Im strickly DITC at the crib right now
SolidGrooveMx2.jpg
Got this in London at Music and Goods Exchange in Notting Hill. The coolest thing at this store is the massive amount of promo stuff you can find, most of which never makes it over to the states. Came across this Solid Groove remix for 2 quid.. Solid, mate.
SamiKoooo4.jpg
Sami Koivikko - I tell Spectral what I need on vinyl and they send it to me. yyyeah : ) This track is perfect for a large soundsystem, cause you really get to appreciate the depth of the production.
Sneak.jpg
Etherea Records on avenue A just closed forever, so sad, but.. I copped some really good crate staples at the "everything must go" moment.
StewartWalker.jpg
I bought this at Etherea when I used to work there. Stuart Walker is a funny guy, on the back of this album is a big picture of a dude on a laptop with a X thru it. Thats cause Stuart is hardcore about doing live shows on his MPC, and kills it every time. This record is a great blend of his brand of Tech and House
TwoLoneSwords.jpg
How cool would it be to be Andrew Weatherall? You can play Ibiza by Day, then have Warp release your left field productions as Two Lone Swordsmen by night.
Michael Ho.jpg
When I go to Black Market I open my mind (and hold my temples) and tell the guy behind the counter to "hit me with hot shit". Then I say , more this, more that, less salt, more butter, .. then he hits me with the Michael Ho EP
JustinMartin4.5.jpg
got this at where else, the Lab. Justin Martin remix - 45RPM whole A side. BIG SOUND!
Oh yeah, so we start at 11pm tonight. APT is in the west village in nyc. its free, and they have a funktion one soundsystem. see ya never

It was of me stoned out of my mind in college watching the Fantastic Four on WB, when I swear I saw Human Torch aka Johnny Blaze grab the mic at a high school prom and bust a rap like Imani from the Pharcyde to a dreamy hip hop instrumental. Guess what? It was real...

How to make a 0-16 team more "Fierce"

I kinda like it....

new_lions.jpg

compared to....

old_lions.jpg

reminds me when the Barclay's English Premier League modernized their logo, but in the EPL's case, i hated it. It took the british elitism out of it. The old one sorta looked like a graphic out of The Legend of Zelda. i guess the new logo still has its english elitism qualities... with the crown, and paw on the ball... cause if that was an American league, the Lion would be snarling with the jaw wide open, and it would be clawing the shit outta the soccer ball (with the crown tilted on the side, obviously)....

EPL_Logo.jpg

EPL_old_logo.jpg

The Lions switching their shit up also reminds me of when the Atlanta Falcons switched their shit up, made it more modernized and "fierce", a term sports marketing and PR loves to throw around. Looking back at their old logo, you start to realize that the old bird was quite Nazi....

falcons.jpg

Speaking of changing a logo to not look so damn Nazi, check out my club's logo re-design history....

so after Roc offered such an interesting interview, I switched it up for Eli's interview by asking Roc to pose the questions. i guess these guys know each other pretty well (or Roc is a stalker)... which is interesting cause whenever am hanging out with djs, sometimes I wonder how we'll they really do know each other. you always see djs bro'ing it out at clubs, but do they really know each other?

so by the time you finish reading this, you'll know a lot more about Eli and even Roc... go up to them in the club and ask them to be your bro... (ok maybe not the Roc)...

SUPER VIRAL BROTHERS

On Tuesday night we had Sweden’s SUPER VIRAL BROTHERS come by the Scion Radio Party at Plan B here in NYC to play their US debut. Although just a “dj set” they tore the room down with a sound I still can’t describe. They’re almost like Sa-Ra meets Justice, but saying that would be an injustice to their originality. The beats provided by Dadalife’s Olle are on some super electronic, hard shit as are the futuristic vocals from Akron Ohio’s Anthony Mills.

I first got introduced to the duo via this mix they have floating around the Internet called THE FLU SHOT. Right off the bat you get hit with a remake of Aphex’s Window Licker. I know that sounds sacrilegious but it works. Olle said he choose beats that were futuiristic in their own time for Anthony to stream of conscious all over. They also said they wrote, recorded and mixed the entire thing in just one day (definitely not Hardy Time). If you check out their MySpace the individual tracks are also available for download.

I asked the duo a couple questions (ala Michna style) here they are (quite cerebral answers boys!).

Q: What three things would you say have the most influence on your work currently?

A: Things noticed. smell memories. physical indurance.

Q: How do you survive the darkness of the Scandinavian Winter?

A: enjoy every precious detail Sweden is overflowing with.

Q: How did you two meet and begin working on music?

A: We met through Photographer Martin Adolfsson.....and actually started by bartering studio time for vocal stylings.

Q: What projects should people be looking for from you in the upcoming year?

A: Super Viral Brothers Wires in Love. Wild Cookie "drugs" EP. Gorilla Milk.

TONIGHT THEY’LL BE DOING A FULL ON LIVE SET @ DANCE CLASS, COME HELP THEM MAKE HISTORY… SHOW TIME 12 MIDNIGHT!!! FREE AS ALWAYS!!!!

so the michna tour finally ended. Here is the post-sxsw summary:

003JimRuss.jpg
after Austin we headed to New Orleans. It was all our first time being there and we loved it. This is partially the reason why we skipped out on WMC. It kind of feels like paradise down there, especially if you get to chill with the right locals. Jim Russel records had ridiculous selection, and it was like a time warp museum inside. I bought KLF and Craig Mack Cassingles. Also in the dollar cd bin was FungKungFusion, Rabbit in the Moon, DJ Sneak mix cds, and other jewels I snatched.
006NolaStreet.jpg

007NolaHouse.jpg

004Vanilla.jpg
If you wanna catch the Ice live these days, you better head South.

005SteadyDiet.jpg
I ended up drinking for 40 nights in a row. I didn't want to, but it happened. To prevent from getting sick I ran a steady diet of garlic and diet coke

Could this be the most incredible thing to happen in sports history?

It all started with Chad Johnson playfully placing an "Ocho Cinco" nameplate over "Johnson" in one of his games a couple seasons ago. Then, last year he changed his name legally from 'Chad Johnson' to 'Chad Ocho Cinco', but the NFL refused to acknowledge the change. Now, coming into this season, the league, along with the media, have fully accepted the fully legal name change. This is all old news, but it hasn't really hit me until I saw this on the NFL's official merchandise website....

ocho.jpg
ocho_2.png

It kills me everytime a reporter mentions "Ocho Cinco" with a total straight face. Honestly, could this be the craziest thing in sports history?!?

UPDATE:
omg.... i didnt even realize this, but i just read this in John Clayton's mailbag:

Q: Don't you think it would be hilarious for Chad Johnson to go to a team where he could not get the number 85?
-Paul in Norman, Okla.

A: I officially nominate you for e-mailer of the year. I did check and saw that 14 teams don't currently have the No. 85 on their roster. The Eagles do have an opening for a No. 85. If the Eagles could work out a trade, at least he wouldn't have to change his number.

cleaning out my cd collection... came across these..

phcd-anything.jpg
buying cds back in the day was such an inexact science... i was looking for this cd for a couple months... tower didn't have it, waxie maxies or kemp mill didn't have... i finally found it at wheaton plaza mall in a sam goody... so random... before internets, it was so random what "alternative" music you'd find in the stores... and how'd these type of releases finally appeared is still a mystery to me... as for the CD, this is some gay'd out, cold war new wave... title track is one of the finest new wave moments of stupidity and bliss...

phcd-aphex.jpg
thank god for tower back in the day. the one in dc near GW always had the crazy imports... here some old AFX Analog Bubblebath cds... the one with the bubble wrap cover is awesome...

phcd-boogiemonsters.jpg
first year of college is pretty awesome because you discover everybody else's music. i think frogman put me on to the Boogie Monsters... in retrospect, they are just the poor-man's Pharcyde, but we must have played have listened to "Stress" about a hundred times after smoking dirt and shwag nickels (literally, dealers would mix dirt and weed) from washington square park...

phcd-cure.jpg
yeah, i was one of those nerds that bought all the imports and peel sessions... back then, one of these $20 cds would buy me like 5 meals at roy rodgers or mcdonalds... bye - bye spending money... can you buy me fries? the live versions on Entreat were better than the album! Fire in cairo on peel is wicked.

phcd-lovesupreme.jpg
ok, im not giving props to Love Supreme for the umpteenth time... just giving it up to the digi-pack packaging. i think this was the first digipack cd i got (free from Giant Step party)... it's still one of the best translations of vinyl art to the cd... there's a more photos and a booklet inside too....

phcd-monks.jpg
not to toot our own weiner, but our first Money Studies release is one of the best mixes ever... we moved a shit ton in tokyo where it became a cult classic... i've recently been listening to it non-stop... anybody got the 7"? about the cover, i randomly ordered a vintage playboy off ebay for the cover... and that's where i found this... lucky first shot.

phcd-omd.jpg
one of my favorite new wave cds ever... peel sessions of early omd material... sick wizard shit.

phcd-portis.jpg
gotta love Generation Records by NYU and their selection of "italian" bootlegs... during the Dummy frenzy, i spent a week's spending money on this boot... it featured a live dj set followed by a live performance... tracklistings were always wrong on these things, and recording quality varied... i think this one was ok, i would relisten but i don't want to go back there...

phcd-uforb.jpg
i think i was reading one of those UK music mags (Select?) and its review of this CD.... the awesome thing about this was that there was an unmarked bonus disc hidden under the CD tray... it featured all the remixes of "Blue Room" including one that was like 20 minutes long... yeah man, ambient dub rastafari!

I few weeks back I got to peep the third show of the TIMELESS put on by the Mochilla
and Art Don’t Sleep fam a lam. Hailing from Rio de Janiero, Arthur Verocai took the
stage with Airto Moreira, Ivan Conti, Jose Betrami, Carlos Dafe, and L.A.’s own
Carlos Nino to deliver a night of musical masterpiece.
Verocia was a large part of the Tropicalia movement; a psychedelic conglomerate
of soul, folk, samba, rock, and jazz inspired from Brazilian cultural and musical
richness that is seemingly imbued in the nation. And, much like Verocai, has sustained
time effortlessly.

ver 1(2).jpg

Even the mans demeanor was very subtle with a much more introverted personality
that is explosive in his music. He has worked with Tim Maia who is one of the most
brilliant cats to ever make funk and soul music (yes I said EVER) and can be
compared to the likes of Jorge Ben (who he did string arrangements for),
Os Mutantes (Seu Jorge/Nasty Ned from City of God), Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil,
and Ivan Lins who he released “Agora” with in 1971. For you Brazilian music fanaticos
he also worked with Evinha, Gal Costa, Jorge Benjor, and Marcos Valle; the list is endless.

TTL Blog 1.jpg

The show was definitely dope without all of the frills of a stuffy atmosphere. Come as you
are or were, and appreciate the arts as we hope they will be. Ahem. Madlib and DJ Nuts
also accompanied the ensemble. I can’t front, I wore a scarf, drank wine at the intermission,
and damn near felt grown if it wasn’t for the crown royal I snuck in and the parking lot pimpin’
that ensued shortly there after.

This month was supposed to be this man…

TTL Blog 2.jpg

Unfortunately the show has been cancelled for undisclosed reasons.
BUT, if you don’t know who David Axelrod is… I pity the fool.

All the way live from L.A.

this one had it all:

nitrous tanks, excessive amounts of drugs n alchohol, girls, lots of rooms with beds, permanent clouds of blunt smoke, homemade lasagna, a flatscreen with its always sunny in philly, etc etc.
