WMC '09 was so off the charts!!!
I'm still collecting pics from different friends and websites, but here's a couple to start:

Day One Lincoln Road: This really sums up Miami. These dudes were killing it, walking around shirtless and mega jacked up. "Don't look at me! but wait, Look at me!"
Photobucket

They took turns on the posing and art-directing "let me see a little more hip baby", and yes, those are Miller Lite pants.

Day Three at Sobe Live for Objektivity party: Dennis Ferrer, Karizma, and Martinez brothers.
Me, Ross One, Maria, and Roctakon bought advance tickets for this. Worth every fuckin penny!
Photobucket

The music was so sick, and the skills of these 3 guys on CDJs and Pioneer EFX was insane!! Karizma played the CDJ like an MPC and did the crazy looping shit you can do in Serato onthe fly and on time.
At one point TMB had the loop from "Jesus Creates Sound" goin into the percussion loop from "Love and Happiness" then into the acapella of same song with India. They ran that mix for like 10 minutes and it was mind blowing...
Photobucket

This pic is of Dennis Ferrer. If anyone out there knows what his second track was PLEASE hit me up!! I heard Louie Vega play it again the next day at a pool party. Ridiculous latin track with a flute loop...

Miami Come Down mix by DJ Sabo

Lastly, here's a little mix I was handing out to people on Sunday night, for the week's come down. Tracklisting is below, and should bring you down smooth and easy:

1. "I Robot" (Pilooski Edit) - Alan Parson's Project
2. "Undisputed (How & Why Disco Edit)" - Undisputed Truth
3. "Make Dance" Try To Find Me vol. 1
4. " White Sun" (Leo Zero Psychedelic Dub) - Doobie Brothers
5. "Theme From Nutrider" 40 Thieves
6. " Bewtween The Sheets (The Revenge Rework)" The Isley Brothers
7. " Love You Inside Out" (Pinches mix) - Cole Medina
8. "American Boy" (Purple Avenue mix) - Estelle feat. Kanye West
9. "Cartegena" (Ray Mang mix) - Dutch Rhythm Combo
10. " Williams Blood" (Cosmic Jam) - Grace Jones
11. " Zillion Lights" - Raz Ohara, Djuma Soundsystem
12. "Rock The Joint (Reverso 68 remix)" - Wild Rumpus feat. Beardyman
13. "Start Something" - Martin Sorenson
14. " My Baby Likes to Stay Out All Night" - Popular People's Front
15. " Burning Love" - Glossy
16. "Cellophane Lover" - Popular People's Front
17. "Is this love (Hernan Cerbello's tribute)" - Bob Marley

here's my account of wmc 2009...
sorry not going to be exciting as jemz' version, but nonetheless, had a good time...

wmc09-bacon.jpg
boy genius was an official guest of the suite... we roll where they give you big bacon....

wmc09-jemzlistening.jpg
i actually missed the Mobroder listening party at Standard Spa... but from all accounts it was one of the top-three events of WMC... everybody chilling in robes... steaming etc... blujemz master of it all....

wmc09-joes.jpg
la sandwicherie, of course you got to go there.... but if you want to make your trip, hit up JOE'S STONE CRAB... this place is the premiere place in the world for Stone Crabs... and they close several months of the years to let the crabs grow back their claws... probably one of my top 5 places to eat in the world...

wmc09-witw.jpg
a couple people mentioned i should do WITW - miami edition... i failed, only thing i have is this almost nekkid picture...

wmc09-speakers.jpg
while listening to operation ivy's "sound system"
before the madness started... check the soundsystem for the mad decent x ttlab party... dude drove all the way from SF to install this badboy...

wmc09-burgshow.jpg
also from SF, Hamburger Eyes crew installed a pretty badass show...

wmc09-gaslamp.jpg
gaslamp slaying it at Stones Throw party. this is the moment before the storm... he dropped the warble right after this pic and the crowd went craze.... if wmc crowd reaction is any indication, dubstep is 2009.

also got to give a shout to Sabo for taking us to some cool deep house parties... really feeling the vibe of that scene, people are really there for the love of the music.... you can dance whatever hell way you want... also shout to nickodemus and medina for the ny love down there...

tony all day today "i love that soulful house"

part two tommorrow...

Oh yeah buddy - You know Sasha tells it how it really is!
So, before you get all hype to catch Mr. Catch and his stimulating band of disc jockeys kill you with ravey jams off their laptops, make sure you pick up some of his record label's new gear!

Fool's Gold. Props to Dust La Rizzle for the design-izzle.

Two more days til the Boy Genius WMC Miami Takeover
I got this blog game on smash, lets keep this thing rolling....

takeover2_0.jpg
YES!! (in a Marv Albert tone)
5 episodes of East Bound & Down staring at April's talented tits and we FINALLY get to see them jawns in the 6th and final episode! Well worth the wait. She has a funny looking face tho...

takeover2_1.jpg
Caught Fast Times at Ridgemont High the other night,
for some reason, i thought this scene when he's cleaning the graffiti off the restaurant mirror was one of the funniest things ever. I think I would die of laughter if I walked into an In-N-Out and saw that on the mirror.

takeover2_2.jpg
LA is starting to get back to being fucking beautiful lately,
forecasts around 75-80 all week

takeover2_2a.jpg
I play pickup soccer at USC every Sunday and this past Sunday had to be one of the strangest things I have ever seen. About 20 Indian dudes (red dot, not feather – all of whom were absolute rubbish) set up a 'try-out' for an intramural team (Which I went ahead and named them F.C. Slumdog for them). Anyways, I was dying when I saw how BIG they made their goals!!! Funniest thing was that the final score was 1-0.

takeover2_2aa.jpg
I wanted to put this wankster up on blast so the world can see THE WORST JERSEY EVER

takeover2_3.jpg
Hussein's swag is so phenomenal

takeover2_4.jpg
takeover2_5.jpg
I can't decide who's swag is more phenomenal: Pete's mancrush Arsen Wenger, with the deuce-deuce in the bubble-gooose overtop a designer suit VS Barack on the Tonight Show with the fresh Beckham suit, sportin THE RONALDO FACE

takeover2_6.jpg
My President Is Arab
Did you guys catch this the other night? Obama's address to the people of Iran, even wishing them a happy new year in their own native tongue. Shit cracks me up, cause he could've NEVER done this a few months ago.

takeover2_8.jpg
Speaking of man-crushes, the Nike store at the Grove in West Hollywood just put this up, and I found myself standing next to a group of strange eurotrash teenage boys as we were all snapping pics of this massive poster.

takeover2_7.jpg
Move over Cristiano?
Samir Nasri, French International on Arsenal, might be my next man-crush.
Easily my top 5 favorite players in the EPL

takeover2_9a.jpg
Peep my barber's swag, he comes to work like this (on Crenshaw) every day, different shade of pastel. Freshest haircut in LA.

takeover2_9b.jpg
Almost crashed my car when I saw this beautiful thing on the 101. Peep closely.... Giant Redskin logo decal + Sean Taylor Memorial ribbon magnet + License plate reading "SKINS 21".
Hail to the Redskins, God Bless Sean Taylor

takeover2_2b.jpg
takeover2_2bb.jpg
takeover2_2c.jpg
If you missed the Michna/RawPaw + Free Gums instore at Turntable Lab LA the other week, you are a mark-ass buster. Shit was crazy, I have never seen such an impressive/unique set-up and performance for a band. Go catch those bitches when they roll through your broke ass town. Peep the crazy artwork of FreeGums in the background too.

takeover2_2d.jpg
There was one sexy chick there rockin some funny aqua jeans and a cream sweater there. If you are reading this, please come to the next instore and sit on my face. My name is Boy Genius

roctakon's finished cd is here in time for WMC... will be putting on the site after we get back. we'll also have the newest money lotion featuring roc + eli... special silkscreen covers for this one...

as for roc's cd, he definitely went super-personal... going as far as writing a mini-treatise on being a club dj on the back cover... i'm pretty satisfied how the artwork came out... i was going for the early 90s house vibe slashed with 80s punk black and white...

also to be unleashed at wmc...
03.24.09-hardycd.jpg
Hardy Boyz WMC exclusivo CDs.... the first official release from this trio consisting of TK, jemz, and lloyd... it's jokey-dance shit, but super-clever and well put together.... look out for the official release in late spring...

we have added a few new tour dates. i insist you come out and see the show. if you can't at least tell a friend. its the monster that has taken over my life. have i said that before? i already give you no props if you are just a dj. i give you double no props if you ever complain about lugging one crate of records. i give you triple no props if you are a dj and dont own turntables.
put together a four piece band with a drummer and load a van 60 times. don't forget your lights and visuals.. then unload the van 60 times. now look for a clean pair of socks. for those of you who are in bands -props -- i know you feel the burn.
most importantly i'm looking for photographers/bloggers/writers to cover the show in each of these upcoming cities so please contact us on the myspace. (myspace.com/eggfooyoung). just put subject: "backstage passes"

Queens, 1980. My dad's band Babe (yep, named after the Styx song) was playing four nights a week in Jersey City (he is about my age then). Their lead singer Edwin has a magical singing voice with an uncanny resemblance to that of Christopher Cross. The band decides to run with it and covers "Ride Like the Wind" and "Never Be the Same" which become some of their biggest crowd-pleasers. My sister and I are in the back covering our ears.

when's the last time you stepped foot in a Sears?

sears-infomer.jpg
on my trip to honolulu, i went to the mall... parked by the sears... went to take a piss... the place was damn near empty, but there was tremendous buzz around this one area (that's 10 people)... there was a Shamwow-type dood selling something and people were entranced... he's throwing out words like "alotted, one time only, special, bonus"... i kept observing... by the end of it, more than half of the people were sold... pretty impressive...

sears-lincoln.jpg
also spotted in the sale section: STREETWEAR IS DEAD shirt.
(funny thing is that this is better than a lot of catalogs that get sent to me)...

hawaii-poke.jpg
favorite hawaiian food? poke! the best i had was at ono seafood, not to be confused with ono's restaurant across the street

hawaii-helena.jpg
best hawaiian meal? helena's... but what's up with everybody trying to claim kalbi as their own... ji-sung, what do have to say about that?

jisung-ronaldo.jpg
it's mine!

hawaii-view.jpg
locals seem to hate on their own city, but for me, honolulu is the perfect mix of urban and natural, minus the traffic... gotta go back soon.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the support of our new record. I'm always checking the box score of vinyl page, never thought we'd be in the top three! As a bonus, here's the original promo art that Snack made for our release. Too bad it never made it as a pic sleeve, that would have been awesome. I'm such a sucker for retro airbrush art.

Also, if you love the funk, we'll be throwing records all over the place tonight in Williamsburg. Come warm up with some whiskey, then your legs on the dancefloor!

wanted to take a second to introduce jake jefferson to the blog- he applied for a TTL blog account and after 14 interviews, he was approved.
mindshiftemcee.jpg
I first met him at FIU (FL International Univ) in 1998 and he was then known as MC Mindshift.
jakeinparis.jpg
since then
jakeinchina.jpg
he's been all around the world.
l_8c5aa20479e20ba5260f773ee11e5b6d.jpg
but on the real i have too many jake jefferson stories, an early one was when we had a house party at his coral gables crib (which ended up flooding because somebody left the upstairs faucet running) and i told him "you pushed and you polished" or simply "push and polish" --yeah yeah inside joke whatever -whoever you are its still all about pushing it to uncomfortable limits, otherwise you may as well live in a cubicle.
jakenaeem55.jpg
a later memory was winter music conference 2006, - i dj'd and rolled into the gig with a then unknown naeem and emcee blu jemz (minus the mask) and we all performed for jake and a crowd of 15 miami heads-- after the show he was like, "who are these guys-what is this, your band?"

oh and did i mention most importantly jake has produced a number of records .... (if you think you are a producer and you aren't on discogs, then you aren't a producer.)
so jake, take it away, give us a taste of that miami life !

NEW LAB RADIO

(click box, duh!)

This month my guests were…

U-TERN

If you read this blog and your not familiar with this dude yet something wrong with you. U-Tern is another one of those can’t do anything wrong guys. His remixes are above and beyond almost everything I hear, his blog is teeming with daily disco downloads and his radio show is one of the most popular on Brooklyn Radio. So needless to say there are a million ways to check out U-Tern but I think you should listen to him here because he killed it. Plus Canadians always give the best interview, right?

snackcmmish.jpg

SNACK N C’MISH

Ever wondered how they got the names Snack & C’Mish? Well I’m not 100% sure why Matt is the Commissioner, but I know that ‘Snack’ is short for ‘Snack Master.’ He got this moniker because when we used to all work in the office together we would always have a snack break around 5pm. On these outings it seemed that no matter what I bought, how much money I spent or how much I planned I was always jealous Jay’s selection, so he was the ‘Snack Master.’ Nowadays I’m more jealous of these guy’s beats. Have you heard their new 12” on Supra? I’ve been playing it non-stop for three months now and everything I’ve been hearing from them is this good (where’s those emo-beats at Snack?). We switched radio shows this month, I did a weirdo Black Valentines mix for their Brooklyn Radio show and they dropped Disco bombs all over mine.

Don’t forget you can now listen to the show on iTunes...

iTunes → Radio → Dance → Turntable Lab LA Radio

I’m djing in PHILLY for the first time ever this FRIDAY. So if you’re around please come say hi…

I was in Japan last week hanging out with Roger Yamaha, seeing the sights, and DJing a little bit. It was my first time going over there and it 100% lived up to the hype - if you have a chance, go. The best part might have been the food - everything was incredible but chicken sashimi was the big surprise for me.

The Tsujiki fish market starts at 5 AM and they sell 20 million dollars worth of fish (2000 tons) every day. We got up early and went to the tuna auctions.

Kango & Roger Yamaha played with me at the Vice Party.

Veronika at the Emperor's Palace, Kyoto. This place was the home to the emperors for 1000 years and burned down every 5 years or so. They finally banned fireworks in Kyoto after the last time it burned down. In Kyoto we stayed in a traditional Ryokan and slept on bedrolls on the floor. The propietor wore a kimono and full makeup, it was kind of nuts.

This truck reminded me of Tampopo.

Mount Fuji, as seen from the Shinkansin bullet train.

Kyoto - Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Tokyo at night. After 3 days in Kyoto I had gotten over a lot of the initial culture shock so Tokyo was a little bit of a letdown. "OK the entire city looks like Time Square and it's really busy, cool." But as we went around the city it crept up on us how crazy it is there.

Yukio & Tomokazu from Vice Japan, Yas, his girl, and Paul P.O.L. Style took us out to eat every night and every restaurant was a banger.

Fresh wasabi

Eating sushi in NY now feels a little like going from Peter Lugers to McDonalds. Yes I know how obnoxious that sounds but it's true.

We brought back a ton of Totoro souvenirs from the Ghibli Museum

Ha ha ha ha ha, check out the bazaar...
More pictures here

Now I'm back and Flashing Lights is at Studio B this Friday with special guests Mixhell (ex Sepultura drummer Iggor Cavalera and his wife and producer Laima Leyton) from Brazil doing a live DJ / drum set. It's really a crazy show; for an introduction check out this clip on Youtube. And we have Fool's Gold records' Nacho Lovers on the set - listen to Fistfight from Nacho Lovers on this month's Rub Radio. Plus me, Nick Catchdubs, and Jubilee. RSVP at the Flashing Lights website to get it for cheap.

Tell us how you entered the Lab world
It was the summer of 2003 and I was a proctor for SAT tests, and my boy Pres was like, "Yo I saw a help wanted post on the lab site." I michna'd my way into an interview with Jasper, Pete, and Tony and it was slightly unclear to me what they were looking for. So they set it off with: "On a scale of 1 to 10 how well do you know current Hip Hop?" then they asked "On a scale of 1 to 10 how well do you know funk?" I was modest and told them a 5 because I was ready for Tony to ask me "who played drums on Rock Creek Park?" Then Jasper handed me Four Tet "Rounds" and said "Here, review this." Little did I know a then unknown Blu Jemz was also applying for the same job. After all that Jemz ended up getting the job and I continued proctoring SAT tests in Staten Island. A few weeks later I started working at the little shop that could aka indie powerhouse Etherea Records in the East Village. This was my ticket into the lab for three reasons. 1) Etherea was run by a Korean 3) The shop had long slave like store hours (this impressed pete) 3) My knowledge of music pretty much tripled working there...

Finally a few months later I told anthony in person: " I know you're not hiring right now, but if you need extra help in shipping I can do it" A day later I got hired to work in shipping and at the retail store on 7th street.

Tell me an interesting story about growing up in Miami.
I moved to Miami in '96 and all I really cared about was meeting Vanilla Ice. A few weeks later I saw a billing in the paper for Vanilla Ice LIVE in Ft. Lauderdale. So I went. Half the crowd was there just out of curiosity (eyebrows raised with "really?" faces) and the other half of the crowd was cheeseball tattoo silver necklace tanktop white trash rap rock loving ICE FANS. It was amazing. Back then I used to roll hard with disposable cameras and was just like "If I can get one flick with Ice, that would be really huge." So after his horribly amazing limp biskit style show, I ended up talking to his DJ. Dude was like "You know I was the DJ for MC 900 Ft. Jesus." Instantly impressed I said "Yo can I get a flick with Ice?" He was like aiiiight and introduced me to Robert Van Winkle. He gave me a pound and we took the flick. It was framed in a cardboard Eckert's frame for a few years until it got lost in a shuffle. I was wearing a Metalheadz T-shirt.

Your favorite foods
Artichokes, garlic, fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced beats, filet minon, lobster with my own butter lemon salt pepper sauce, fresh salmon with spinach, mashed potato with balsamic french style, miso soup, thai green curry, homemade mac and cheese, jalapenjo sausage, tomato garden soup, whitefish, japanese carrot dressings, croutons, black olives, onions, red peppers and mad toppings

Tell us one local spot we should hit up during WMC
The sauna at the standard hotel with a girl you just met

Worst job you ever had
A week after I graduated college I went out job hunting. i had a few bullshit desk job interviews which led to nothing. i needed cash fast. i grabbed an employment guide (free junk paper) and the next thing I know I'm dressed in a suit selling children's books. The best was the phrases they taught you to say to solicit milfs, such as "Have you seen the new one?" or "Your kids'll love these"

Things that make you feel good

Too many things - stretching, eating, drinking good coffee, attacking never ending to-do lists, seeing friends become successful, jazzercise, etc.

What kind of women do you fantasize about

Latin dimes all day

What type of kid were you in high school
Like Ferris Bueller if he rode BMX/played trombone/built stereo systems/went to raves/40's and blunt

What is one of the coolest things you've found in a thrift shop

When I was recording with Secret Frequency Crew we found this coffee table that was just a 2 foot mirrored cube on all sides.

If your house was burning, i would save....
hard drives and photos/negatives

Which contemporaries influence your work
Friends With You, Freegums (duh), Animal Collective, TV On The Radio, Kaws, Espo, Krink, Skull Disco, Tempa, Warp, BPitch Control, Justice, System D-128, MGMT, NYC street art, and more

What should we expect at the LA show

Like Wrestlemania VII

Recent things for you to look at.

Major Minneapolis winter + warmup = melted icicles = flood in the Burlesque office. I've been wanting to get rid of that carpet since day one anyways. Concrete floor right now is the way to go.

Housing some dim sum.

Screenprinted CD jackets for the reissue of Devlin / Darko / XXXchange's "Couche Tard" mix. We printed them flat and had them die-cut, then hand-assembled each one. So special.

Todd Bratrud test print.

The follow-up to last year's Do it To it record is on its way! Vinyl is heading to our office from the Czechs and the first color of the jackets (bright blue) is getting printed right now. Everyone on the record brought their A game and we're stoked for this to come out.

Release party at SXSW.
Vinyl on TTLab after we get back home and get situated.

BONUS BEATS

Me and Bitch Ass Darius' glockenspiel band in full effect. Minneapolis parking lot jam session. Nadastrom looks on:

It has taken me about 10 months to build my current live show to where it is now. I've maxed out 5 credit cards and keep getting declined for a 6th.

3319727675_d7c8ee5713-1.jpg
thousands of hours have been spent in my head getting the stage show right, adding/subtracting/ replacing/rehearsing/streamlining and repeating

3320555638_e1db0ec4c3.jpg
rolling with 7 tv's on tour is the stupidest/funnest thing you can do. tv's are 6 times cooler than projectors and all i can think is wait til we have 50.

people are starting to ask me what kind of lights i am using and i'm at the point where i'll just make up names. "Yea those white ones are the Nebulas...the green ones are Gimptronix"

Video nerds are coming out of the cracks and scoping Dueys rig.

Long story short I'm real proud to where we've gotten it, am lucky to have a band believe in me, and you should really come out and see a show on this tour. Friday March 6th we play Mezzanine in SF for the Ghostly 10 year Anniversary party. see ya never !

An old friend put me in contact with you guys.

Tell us one local spot we should hit up during WMC

Worst job you ever had

What kind of women do you fantasize about
My girlfriend.

If your house was burning, i would save....
People, computers, hardrives, car keys, myself, paperwork, depending on how much time I have.

What should we expect at the LA show

Aloha amigos! Just got back from 4 days in Hawaii. Got to catch a few waves the first day

Next day I dj'ed this Brazilian Carnaval Block party in downtown Honolulu. Over 8000 people getting twisted in the streets, including mad Brazilians begging for more Baile Funk all night:

I let one cutie start dancing on stage, and next thing i know there were about 30 people on this tiny platform with me. Vinyl was impossible to even cue, and I thought for sure the stage was going to collapse.

Even after the sound guys made everyone step down, this one Brazilian cutie Carolina insisted on dancing with me for the rest of the night.

Big Mahalo goes out to Tim and Mark for bringing me out there, Dj Mr. Nick at KTUH, Zachariajah, Sylvana and Isabella for letting me crash, Johnny for hanging and surfing, and Seba for the dope flicks!!!

I also just did a FREE podcast mix for XLR8R magazine, which has tons of new baile funk, dubstep, house, and a few new cumbia joints I got coming out soon on Bersa Discos. LISTEN HERE
