the blog is lookin really good these days - lots of eye catching content. for shits and giggles i wanted to continue the fun that was Boy Genius' Record Check during his takeover. sorry though, i can't top the "40 Bars." here's a rundown of some joints that you can afford and possibly find with the right resources if you're still into the vinyls...

stackscheck_banner.jpg

arthur_blythe.jpg
Arthur Blythe - "The Grip"
this is my shit for days when i'm knee deep in illustrator and need something to free my mind of distraction. the cover is just beautiful. i can't get enough of India Navigation covers [see: "Metamorphosis" by Blythe as well]. features Steve Reid on drums.

eddy_driver.jpg
Eddy Driver - "A L'Orgue Hammond"
this is one of those records you buy for just one song; and that song is "Black Knight." everyone knows it from that Beatnuts "Muchachacha" song. i sweated that song hard when it came out and it took forever for me to actually find this lp. ended up buying it from euroman about 4 years after the initial amazement.

electronic_getting.jpg
Electronic - "Getting Away With It" 12"
no need to explain. Woody used it on one of his old mixes so go to his blog and download it. artwork by Peter Saville ftw.

jersey_drive.jpg
New Jersey Drive Soundtrack EP
this has been my secret weapon over the years that never fails. just juggle the piano opener from the first note on the E Brothers song and whalah - you're Tony Toca. don't sleep on the OC & Organized Konfusion song either.

joe_smooth.jpg
Joe Smooth - "Rejoice"
solid chicago house lp from '89. Renée Mohannon's voice on the song "I'm Not Givin Up" is my favorite.

the_mac
The Mac - "The Game Is Thick" EP
put out on a record label that was a nail salon as well. mentor of the late Mac Dre, and ain't nutin nice. the Mac was also killed [in '91 i believe.] pour out some of that cuttybang for the 2 fallen crestsiders.

webster_lewis.jpg
Webster Lewis - "8 for the 80's"
dude's wearing lipstick, i can't front. great modern soul with a couple boogie tracks as well. i always sing "Give Me Some Emotion" out loud in the car... you will too.

robson&lincoln.jpg
Jorge Robson & Lincoln Olivetti - "S/T"
i heard this at that Brasilian night at Black betty and lost it clapping my hands as hard as i could. soon after i purchased one of their mixtapes and lo and behold it was on there. "Aleluia" is the track that makes everyone dance and feel like their a part of some 80's Brasilian/southen baptist, crossover church.

pmwyaherdmeh.jpg
PxMxWx - "Legalize: Pass the Weed" 12"
for Boy Genius - a little Cash Money steeze from the '9-3. produced by Fresh, DJ Indo, and DJ Crack Out. totally dipped in honey.

On rotation at the spot today:
kerri_atmosphere.jpg
Kerri Chandler's "Atmosphere" EP on Shelter [real heads know the club]

p.s.

I do miss Lab people and NYC.

I remember my first and only lab basketball game mainly because that's where I first met and bonded with Sizzle. I also remember Jasper being really stoned walking around with Emma, Tony chucking the ball every second he could, and James and Pete being way too serious.

Stacks, you are young boy and im grown man when it comes to this DC gear reppin game. Peep the steez: Georgetown Hoyas Shooting Shirt circa 1995. True story: Hall of Fame Coach John Thompson went to Nike and demanded a jersey change. He requested a pattern to be made exclusively for his team, to resemble a dashiki, since half his team was pure African. Thus, the pattern that can still til this day be found in ALL Georgetown Hoyas hoops jerseys.

Pinky-ring worth about fiddy, bling bling.

Project Chick
Cash Money

One of my favorite records of all time.
Mannie Fresh does some pretty unbelievable stuff on this track.
Take a listen and listen to that bubbling noise.

rc5.jpg

We On Fire
Hot Boy$

One of my favorite records of all time.
Its funny, I like the clean version better.
Using 'boy' instead of the 'n' word is refreshing.

I Need A Hot Girl
Hot Boy$

One of my favorite records of all time.
Damn I love Cash Money.

pcashmoney.jpg

One of my favorite pics of all time.

pwayne.jpg

Yes, he's wearing an Art Monk Redskins throwback.

rc7.jpg

Holla Holla
Ja Rule

I also bought double of these.
What an incredible/deceiving debut single.
Kinda like Sarah Palin's first appearance at the RNC.

rc8.jpg

Stillmatic
Nas

This freestyle fucked up my world.
"Is he H to the Izz-O, M to the Izz-O?
Fo shizzle you phony, the rap version of Sisqo"

rc9.jpg

Gangsta! Gangsta!
C.Webb

Yea, thats right bitches. THAT C.WEBB.
This was the lead single featuring Busta.
My friend Ben Mesika is the only person I know who actually owns the LP.
"Fetish for lettuce, from the home of J. Rose and Jerome Bettis!!"

rc10.jpg

40 Bars
Allen Iverson aka Jewelz

This shit made white people go nuts... not like how Paul Wall has the internet going nuts, I mean bad nuts.
David Stern damn near had a heart attack.
Now every player is making hiphop albums.

I was in DC last weekend DJing some Inauguration Parties. I played 18th st. Lounge on Sunday night, and did a record quadruple rewind on the Cocoa Tea "Obama" song with MC Hutchey of Thievery Corp on the mic. People were super hyped up for our new Funky President.

Then Monday night I Dj'ed the Huffington Post Inauguration Party which was televised Live on CNN.
Photobucket

There were over 4000 people there, and more trying to get in. Tons of celebrities made it out like Robert Dinero, Shakira, Steven Spielberg, Val Kilmer, Sharon Stone, Jessica Alba, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, and on and on. Sheryl Crow, Will I Am, and Sting all performed live. Here's a pic of Sting doing acoustic version of "Every Breath You Take" while I'm standing behind him on stage waiting to go on.
Photobucket

I was able to get a few homies in to the party. My boy Troy (Rex Riddim) - who was mistaken about 3 times that night for Will I Am - got a shot with Don King:
Photobucket

Since it was so packed, there wasn't much room to move around, but I did get some asses shaking after Sting performed. Apparently MC Hammer was there dancing, but i didn't see him.

Here is the final 50 minute set I got to throw down for the "white liberal woman crowd" as my friend Troy kept calling it all night:

Then on Tuesday night, I went back to ESL to celebrate again, and DJs King Britt (pictured), Jepthe Guillame, Nickodemus, Daz I Cue, Tom B, and DRM all rocked amazing sets.
King Britt

After 4 days of partying for Obama it was time to head back to NYC, but not before I got invited for lunch at the Colombian Embassy!!:
Colombian Embassy

We had the most amazing home-cooked soup called "Ajiaco" with 4 kinds of potatoes, fresh chicken and avocado, plus these mini arepas which were unbelievable. It was an amazing way to end the trip, cure my hangover, and set us on our 6 hour drive back to NYC. Gracias Adrianna!

i caught party girl (1995) on cable this wknd... this movie is a great slice of mid-nineties nyc. there's even a strong DJ sub-theme in the movie with lots of classic nyc house in the soundtrack (sadly, most are not on the CD) and lots of dj references. it harks back to when DJing was much more of weird hobby than the super-efficient, professional thing it has become. it also reminded me that there used to be some great dj venues in the east village (liquids, nation) to hear music... also that there used to be loft parties in manhattan... not any more.

got back from LA LA land... 80 and sunny, while nyc was frozen in single digits..,

lala-schematic.jpg
first stop was Boy Genius' office. yes, he has a real job! and it's a pretty good one... he designs interfaces and new media for high profile clients. this is his office building which is a great example of the lo-tech on the outside, super-modern on the inside design that defines the back areas of Culver City.

lala-flag.jpg
like i said, his office is super-minimal on the inside (CTU-esque), but BG rocks tons of flare, including this full-sized american flag draped on top of his computer.

lala-namm.jpg
on saturday, we headed to the NAMM show... if you haven't heard about, it's basically like the auto show for the music store industry...

lala-lonnie.jpg
the show boasts guest appearances from everyone from Mick Mars of Motley Crue (hot girlfriend) and Lonnie Smith, sporting the full turban.

lala-theremin.jpg
this was one of the highlights of the show. Moog always keeps it real at their booth. this theremin master was so odd, but fascinating. he reminded me of that goth kid from the new American Idol. me and BG were mezmirized...

lala-bgtheremin.jpg
of course BG had to challenge him to a theremin duel

my best of show:
lala-apc40.jpg
you've already seen it on the blog, but the new akai is pretty cool. they're also coming out with a smaller version of the popular MPK49.

lala-machine.jpg
native instruments new maschine.... laid out like an MPC, comes with its own software. i like the idea of custom controllers...

microkorgxl.jpg
microkorg XL merges Korg's 2 most popular retro synths, the microkorg and the R3.... awesome vintage design too...

also look out for
- new Rane TTM56
- folding Odyssey L-Stands (no more taking it apart)
- korg nano pads in black (these will be on the site tonight)

lala-pacemaker.jpg
and on an interesting note, i got to check out the possible next big DJ thing. also developed somewhere in europe where everyone is blonde, Pacemaker is a PSP sized device that allows you to mix music wirelessly. this guy was basically mixing the entire time on this device, beatmatching etc... we'll see how this progresses... not avail in the US yet, but coming soon...

lala-pacemaker2.jpg
the future of club music?

lala-signage.jpg
after a punishing day of non-stop meetings, it was cool to stop by the LA store and install new signage. as most lab customers know, i'm not big on signs on the stores... people still complain that you can't find the manhattan shop... but i kinda like it like that even tho that sounds stupid. but in la, it's a different game. things like signs are essential... it's a constant bombardment...

lala-obama.jpg
i caught the inauguration on the plane flight back. everyone was in their obama cocoons, but once he was sworn in, the plane erupted in applause... that was a cool moment.

last but not least,
we're almost done!

Do Work!!!

[From CNN]

It's the same Oval Office. The same desk. Even the same curtains. But President Obama has already made one major change: Go through eight years of White House photos, and you won't find one of former President Bush in the Oval Office without his jacket on.

It wasn't just a personal preference. In the Bush administration, it was a rule: Jackets in the Oval Office — and now, it seems, one of the first Bush-era regulations to get scrapped in the Obama White House.

Jackets are for cracker presidents.

Just got back from Sundance, full post on that later. For now wanted to mention a show tomorrow night in NYC.
---
Fresh for the 09, a couple of friends of mine started a new band. They're called Cubic Zirconia. Their debut live performance is tomorrow night at the Studio of Webster Hall in NYC. We will be joined at 8pm by DJ sets from Wajeed, Link, and Daryl Palumbo (of Head Automatica). Here's the Q & A with Nick Hook, 1/3 of Cubic Zirconia:
Cubic_Cschechter_cz1.jpg
M: Tell us about the members of Cubic Zirconia and who they are.
NH: CZ consists of tiombe lockhart on vocals, nick hook, and todd
weinstock. todd plays guitar, tiombe sings and i play keys and make
beats, but our roles switch and we help each other from the start to
end of every song.

M: Before you settled on the name Cubic Zirconia, did you have any other band names you were considering?
NH: We were thinking of calling it bazillipede

M: Your previous band (Men, Women and Children) was signed to Warner. Did that teach you stuff that you might want to do the same or differently with this new group?
NH: In short, i learned partly what NOT to do. A major can be good if you
have done significant work on an indie or have a fanbase of your own,
but if you are a new band where a structure of people actually have to
think on their own and determine a way for you to be heard it might
not be the best place to start. At the same time we were given the
opportunity to only focus on music for about 3 years, make a record
with a real budget, and have the chance to go on tour with some folks
that you could only dream about as a kid. As for the new band, i
kinda of want to go slow and just release some stuff slower,
single/vinyl based and not go in such an all or nothing

M: I know you've been rehearsing a good amount for this show. Have you changed your gear set-up from what you originally thought it might be?
NH: Trying to strip it down and keep it simple. Been keymapping and
sampling quite a few of my analog synths and putting them on a midi
keyboard, no amps on stage, we added an extra guy to do a utility
roll, play a little percussion, keys, vox...

M: sounds good, see you at the show, and... peep the flyer
(thanks to mike for the design)

This arrived in my myspace inbox today. Some girl from New Jersey (I think she's a poet or something).

"I can appreciate your angst

But I shouldn't have to suffer from it.
Can you please stop screeching into the microphone on Mark Ronson's radio show?
I tune into that show for pleasure, not to hear you screech into my ears and make me irrationally want to tear my skin off.
I was listening to this weeks show just now, and it was so annoying, that I couldn't bare to listen to the show for fear that you would do it again.
Not very shmoove."

-also it should be noted that this girl only had one friend and that she must listen to the show a lot in Marks absence since "not very shmoove" is one of my trade mark lines on there (NN in the house).

Can't please all the people...

Btw-went to see Notorious last night. With the exception of some inexcusable slip ups (like 90s whips in 80s scenes), i left feeling pretty entertained. The dude Gravy who plays B.I.G. actually did a great job although the dude who played Pac is kinda laughable...all in all, a decent lazy sunday afternoon flic...

If you don't know U-Tern and haven't heard his music it's definitely time to get familiar and where better than the intimacy of PLAN B? Also the RUNAWAY boys will be in the house and they're super.

A couple of years ago I got hit up by Delicious Vinyl to do some web design work. After talking about a few different projects, the main one ended up being redesigning Fatlip's Myspace page. For the first week or so after the page went up and I was still doing the final updates, I was checking Fatlip's Myspace email. Nothing majorly interesting came through at first, but then once his profile got featured on Myspace's front page, the floodgates opened. I basically passed the torch off to Delicious Vinyl at that point, but before I signed off for the final time, I found a message to Fatlip entitled SOMEFIN I WROTE WHEN LISTENIN TA YOU. Here it is in all its unedited glory:

AMONGST VAST THOUGHT PATTERNS
GREATER THAN RINGS SOUROUNDIN SATURN
I'M TA THE POINT WERE NOTHIN ELSE MATTERS
STURE UP THE BEAT AS IF IT WERE A BATTER
LYRICS HIT U SO HARD THEY STRAIGHT FUCKUP YOUR BLATTER

finishing up the cover for the next money studies release which will be roc's "finding directions" mix.
dood has got an interesting life... flying several times a week all over the world to dj money gigs for the button-down and ho-fit masses. but inside he's a gay black man from DC who loves disco and classic house. the two collide here (and i don't mean mash-ups, more on a theoretical level). it's a straight house mix, but he mixes the compositions like he would a club-set.

and while I'm on the subject of music,
i got a chance to meet up with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. I've been a fan ever since I caught them on a random walk through Washington Square Park a couple years ago. their music and showmanship are top notch... no wonder they we're opening up for the Chili Peppers. if you have chance to see them in a venue (like Joe's Pub), I highly recommend it... I think they're in Paris right now, so Parisians look em up...

each morning when i hit the daily grind i always check up on a select few sites, get my head on straight over some juice and/or tea and prepare myself for success until lunch. my favorite would have to be checking up on the creative genius who is Rickey Kim over at his [more than a] blog, Mr Kim Says. dude truly inspires me with his amazing taste, and transcendent work ethic. the other day he posted up a book that caught my eye immediately. i was intrigued and wanted to find out more about the content, but just the cover alone said "buy me!" last night i copped. DEAL. i couldn't put it down. this is the most amazing thing i have read in a long time.
arden01.JPG

i really wanted to take some pictures of the content layout, but i feel if you really want to see and read it you will purchase it yourself.

and on the subject of Kim's, i recently found this shirt that me and a buddy of mine Lawrence Kim made like 10 years ago - it was our first attempt at silk screening. i remember we stayed up till the early hours at his parents place listening to mixes, and printing out transparencies

so Rawrence, if you're reading this [you probably are] holler at the deud.

NEW LAB RADIO

(click box, duh!)

This year I decided it was time to start focusing this show on more Lab affiliates so I got three of my favorites to kick it off…

l_5d80204c4ec9ee26e3c28bab1ad17d9b.jpg

D. YSH

D took over as manager for The LA store when I was deemed too derrel to continue. His half-Japanese-ness makes him super thorough on mixes and inventory and an all around really polite guy (sorry if that sounds racist). He really surprised me when this mix hit my inbox, its like grimy disco that’s not too disco, electro that never flat-lines and so on. In other words he hits all the right angels without crashing into them.

l_901c9013bf431d470709d1accd2ec441.jpg

MICHNA

Oh Michna how far we’ve come since the days they had to separate us in the office for talking too much during official work hours. Now on the heals of his Ghostly International debut Magic Monday and his recent Golden Globe nomination for best live horn section in a drama (he lost) I finally got him to make time to be on my show. Another really strong mix that flows easily between electro and (dare I say?) Down-Tempo (but not in a funny way). Michna wasn’t ashamed in the interview to let his true colors show on topics like why remixes suck and how much his advance wasn’t.

/ l_7ffa9992c99e4429bfa857dd013acec5.jpg

CATCHDUBS

Was Fools Gold the label of the year in ‘08? It’s worth debating, but the impact they had on mix show radio and merging the rap and electro worlds this past year cannot and neither can Nick’s influence on that success. Catchdini has always been the “nice guy” out of the Lab affiliates, but I’ve noticed since the string of hits from Fool’s Gold homeboy is starting to get some serious swagger and why not? The mix he did for this show is like fireballs being catapulted one by one at the listener. I remember when he handed it in he was like “why didn’t you tell me this wasn’t gonna air for 6 weeks? I wouldn’t have used so much current shit.” Listening now almost 2 months later nothing feels dated (not even Paranoid). When we spoke he dropped the address to send all rap demos for consideration.

Don’t forget you can now listen to the show on iTunes...

iTunes → Radio → Dance → Turntable Lab LA Radio

If you haven’t been yet do yourself a favor and check out Cosmo & Eli’s party at riv105 this Wednesday. It’s Eli’s B-Day so buy him a drink (he’s not known for handling his liquor).

I was recently asked to curate a monthly TTL event at APT in NYC, so here it is:
(dj's are listed in alphabetical order, jemz calls me a communist)
TTLJan152009wordup.jpg
points worthy of note:
Why did I pick this lineup? Cause ALL of these DJs are on point. Selection, Mixing, Experience, Crowd Control, Keeping it interesting/Pushing the music, and ...- Etiquette, .. (i could write a whole post on DJ etiquette but I won't. If you make yourself look like a douche in this department it's probably all your fault). As most of you know, In New York City there are tens of thousands of DJs. And the good ones rarely get to play all under the same roof. So if you're reading this blog, this one's for you. (show up with $3 in your pocket and you're still gonna have a good time) Q & A coming soon.

Listen to Y-Tee toasting in each vid...i always wondered if he had any influence on Sean Paul (sure the hell sounds like it!) Extra big ups to Poor Righteous Teachers too for ushering in the reggae rap vibes (long before The Fugees made it commercial with The Score...18 Million Copies btw!!!)

RE: N. Y. E. - Brooklyn Loft Party

Thrown together at the last minute like a party potluck, Greg let us use his loft again (same one for the infamous Halloween Party), bought 3 kegs of beer, Danny C brought the tables, I brought the mixer, Brent gave up his speakers, everyone brought a shitload of disco/soul/boogie/house records, Charlie brought some lights, Ponk brought his disco ball, and everyone made phone calls and emails... Turns out, this party exceeded all my expectations! By midnight, there were people everywhere, sweating it out for a packed night of dancing, drinking, and bringing in the New Year till early morn. Thanks to everyone who was there, the DJ's for bringing their A game, and all the freaky/sexy people for getting down. It was unforgettable to say the least.

Ha gotta love this...original reporting via hypebeast...

Few find any positives from the steady declining American economy, including the foreclosure crisis that has troubled so many people across the nation. The New York Times recently did an article about how skaters might be the only average joe’s benefiting from this epidemic. With thousands of homes being closed in areas like Fresno, skaters have managed to track down properties with empty pools via tracking sites and even Google earth which has attracted visitors from as far away as Australia.

Boy Genius rolled up to the stage at The Rub on New Year's Eve and said "Can you help me get two bottles of Moet in the club? The bouncer has them." Of course I can! At midnight center stage he screamed "Barack Obamaaaaa" into the microphone and counted it down for us like a Korean Fatman Scoop. Then his boy, who was a dead ringer for Jonah Hill, tackled the stage monitor and fell on the floor.

Lots of Vassar girls were there. That's never a bad thing. I ended my night with Catch, Caps & Jones at Savalas at 6 AM. I have no idea how I got there, but on New Year's day I threw up a whole lot.

Ian took some pictures -

For those unfortunates who won't be at The Rub this Saturday night, just throw on our best of 2008 mix and have your own party:

One of the benefits of going home for Christmas is digging through the piles of records that I have at my parent's house. You find randomness like this...
