Q-Tip Listening Party In-Store at Turntable Lab LA
Q-Tip shows up and opens up the event with what felt like 20 minutes of just talking. Talking about everything possible. Talking about Hussein Obama, that other vanilla face, hip-hop, LA, whatnot. He proceeded to play a few cuts from his album, talking about his thought process or explaining stories/influences inbetween tracks. Not gonna lie, it felt good to hear the abstract on record again, it was such a throwback flashback feeling.
What was awesome (and the best part), was the 'town hall' style question + answer period Q-Tip insisted on having, urging the crowd to ask him more and more questions about anything. Someone asked about how he managed to do work on Mobb Deep's Infamous album, and Tip proceeds to do an incredible Havoc impersonation full of "naw what I'm sayyan"s and a Prodigy, full of chewing noises and the deep voice. Someone asked about a rumored Common + Q-Tip collabo album in the future and he confirmed it true. Best question of the night was from a wankster who asked if it was true if he dated Nicole Kidman. Instead of a Sarah Palin duck-and-dodge answer, he gave the people some straight talk and said "Yeaaaah. That pussy was right too." Nah, he didnt say that, but he thought that.
I miss the days when record shop walls looked like this.... Raekwon's 3rd single from Cuban Linx on the wall!? These arugula-eatin, Prius-drivin, latte-sippin, Obama-votin Hollywood elitists had no idea what was going on.
