ECHOES OF Linkwood Family - Miles Away 10" Time for another installment of Echoes with your boy Herb P. This time around I'm cupping my ear to the Firecracker Recordings reissue of Linkwood Family's 2004 limited-run underground burner Miles Away on 10" wax.
The cartoon/comic strip soul sista cover art and use of "Miles" in the title immediately threw my mind to Davis' groundbreaking 1972 release. Called "the most street record ever recorded by a jazz musician" by Allmusic.com, On the Corner was decried by purists and pundits at the time for its unapologetically trailblazing forays into the future sounds of drum and bass loops, concrète production techniques (which would come to epitomize hip hop and all sample-based musics), electronic timbres and -- perhaps most presciently of all -- a licentious infidelity to genre so familiar and inoffensive to consumers of popular and avant-garde music today. In my and many other people's opinion this record is a masterpiece, so it's not a bad reflection to bear in your own work.
Also on the topic of the cover art... After realizing that this label and these dudes are all based in the UK (and so I'm assuming they're white, sue me. ...there's no pics of them on their myspace and I'm betting it's more because they look like the aristocracy than because they're on some UR-styled anonymity thing), the next thing to rush into my mind was a tremendously on-point rant by Theo Parrish when questioned by Moodmat on the topic of white theft of black arts. A pointed excerpt: We don’t have a lot of protection against thieves because their aren’t a lot of lawyers, because there’s usually just enough money for the artists to survive on, unless you helped father the form. There aren’t managers suggesting to artists to do white versions of black songs, but there are white artists with labels doing it on their own. This is one of the few places a thief will try to copy your music, then send it to you calling it a tribute in hopes of you endorsing it. They’ll find the sources of your samples if you use them, and use them verbatim, then try to cash in on your previous successes. The Black producers in this form are a lot closer knit, so there’s a lot of respect for the other producers doing it, and there’s a shared philosophy of innovation as a supreme ethic, you simply would lose respect from your contemporaries if you tried to use the same sources as they did for sampling. The thieves, usually white, are typically the culprits of this phenomena. Its almost as if they want to convince the buying market that since they sampled from where you did then they must be just like YOU, only white! Once they get it ready to put out, they’ll use pictures of little black children, and black women with afros- things they never could be, and never have been -on their cover art to help complete the illusion of having a truly down, soulful product to offer the market. Sometimes they’ll outright sample YOUR song, and copy your drumpattern, send it to a magazine and some adjective limited writer will say the copy sounds ’so-and-so esque’, never making that artist stand on their own, letting the thief who made it ride on the back of original artists. To be honest, I thought these tracks were Moodymann under another name when I first heard them...and also finding the following blog entry on the Firecracker Recordings myspace didn't help their case: Saturday, December 23, 2006 BUT...apparently lots of the originators, including Theo and Moodymann, are cosigning these dudes and playing these cuts out. And the Firecracker folks definitely don't seem like they're out for fortune and fame or a quick buck; they seem to be in it out of love. So it's prolly all good, but still something to think on... Theo goes on to say: There are a few non black underground dance artists that simply have gravitated to the form because its as free a musical form as you can get. They don’t even care who their music sounds like, they are just trying to express themselves honestly and truthfully. I’m not talking about them. They are rare and appreciated. They are original. Whatever success they garner is deserved. And I heartily recommend reading his entire statement, as I can't do it justice in excerpts. *props to Emynd for posting this interview on the hollerboard, where I found it. ECHO 3: Sun Ra's "Fate in a Pleasant Mood" This one's pretty literal. I'm 99.9% sure that the AA2 track, "Fate," samples a version of Sun Ra's composition, "Fate in a Pleasant Mood." Specifically the version from Ra to the Rescue (1982). Let's just hope Theo didn't sample this one first.

NO TEXTING ON THE DANCEFLOOR! Somebody's gotta re-make Midnight Star's "No Parking On The Dancefloor" with a modern version - "NO TEXTING ON THE DANCEFLOOR!" Seriously, how many times have you gone a party and seen all these wallflowers chillin' and texting. You can be spinning the most bad-ass jam and the biggest response you can get is people looking up from their phones and going, "That's my jam!" before going quickly back to perfecting their wpm with their thumbs. Talk about lame. When most of our parents were young and going out to clubs, they were drinking, doing stimulants, screaming their heads off, sporting fashion that we can only try to "bring back," and most of all...they were dancing. I know if my old skool NY neighbors who partied at the house clubs in the 80's saw this generation's parties, they would think we're pathetic. Going home before 4, talking to only people that you know, and texting in the club can all be filed under BORING. If you can't out-party your parents, what does that say about us? Just food for thought the next time you see that certain guy or girl busting out her phone in the middle of the jam. Real sexy right? Also, if you care at all about art or have watched the Vice Guide To Travel, you've probably heard of my friend Dave Choe. Last night I went to his house to chill and eat BBQ, when I got to meet the esteemed BK photographer Boogie. Dude is one of the most daring photographers in the biz and was just real nice to meet him in person. They were talking about a big art show(going on as I type this) on Houston and Bowery. It's a collection of some of the hottest new artists right now(check the flyer) and I heard the opening night RSVP just reached 1000 people. Make it down there if you can. I heard there's a possibility it might get shut down early due to a very controversial piece in the front. It's by an royal portrait painter from Europe who's hired two hot assistants in his studio to cut and assort the dicks and pussies out from over 15,000 porno mags, which he 's used to construct a royal portrait of our one and only Georg Bush. Should be quite a show. Lastly, I know I don't really post too many parties on here, but truth is Snack & I have been holding down a party every friday at East River Bar in Willaimsburg since December. We roll deep in an 8 DJ crew who are all extreme vinyl heads in the disco, boogie, funk, soul, house, UK Garage, world and it's been nothing but good times. They replaced some speakers and we rock all vinyl sets until the early morn. This week, Snack, myself, Frantz from Greenpoint's legendary digspot The Thing and Paul Choe(aka Ponk the Boogie Murderer) do it again and would like to officially invite all of you. Bring a friend and your dancing shoes.

Fall is the shit and you know this. You get to layer up in your freshest gear, hot coffee tastes good again and tipping back shots to keep warm just feels so damn good. Of course, it sucks that all the hotties are go back to fall wardrobes, but then again, nothing can replace the feeling of making out in brisk air. With that said, here's another round of personal highlights by yours truly... Six Pack gives shine to Noah Butkus & Morning Breath, check! In4mation coming more proper than ever Wore this last night...killed it! I say WTF now, but my kids will probably be doing shows on this. Welcome to the future... Cheers,

So my comics site peroxidecomics.com has been revamped... I was using Squarespace to design it which is weird to figure out but then once you get the hang of it pretty easy. Anyways all my old comics are up there and if you like Dan Clowes, Peter Bagge, Evan Dorkin, girls, music, neurotic ramblings etc then there should be something in here for you. Plus there's archives, a search function and you can leave comments... check me out in the 21st century! Here's a couple quick links that I think would appeal to DJ/TTL blog readers, hope you enjoy:

Hey! What's up, folks. It's DJ Mel coming at ya with some Southern representation. Some of ya'll might know me, if not, I'm homies with Ayres, Catch and that dude Mike 2600. Daps to Pete for putting me on! So if you're ever in Texas, HOLLER. We'll do it properly... My part of the country isn't really known for fast Miami sounding joints, but this Austin record was pretty big regionally back in the day. Using all the best elements of Funky Drummer, Debbie Deb and that GET BUSY sample that was on everything in the late 80's/early 90's makes this track hard as nails. Good luck finding this record, it's tough to find... I GOT DOUBLES. Do people still buy doubles nowadays? I guess it doesn't matter anymore. Anyway, If you're in Seattle this weekend, I'm throwing down with FOURCOLORZACK & DV ONE @ THE WAR ROOM. Ok, the weather is nice (below 90 degrees) it's time to take this for a ride...

ages ago, juan angel chavez and myself took a little road trip to indiana to visit tribune showprint. tribune showprint is a letterpress print shop that opened in 1878. It is the oldest continuously running letterpress print shop in the USA (actually opened one year before famous hatch show print in nashville).
it was a pretty amazing yet sad trip. on one hand it was amazing to see all this old wood block type and all the old presses but at the same time it was sad to think that there are very few of these old spots still around. hopefully they take care of themselves and can keep the doors open long into the future. it would be sad to see all these old places and the great old printing techniques disappear. juan and i made 8 different 14x22 prints at tribune showprint that trip (either by setting the art/type while we were there, or having the crew complete our ideas after we left), we are selling a few of them through turntable lab this month. these 2 based off of my experiences at the maxwell street market while living in pilsen we tried to find every large circle in the place and put them on one print, at the time we didnt even realize that one of them was actually a globe. this one was just too good not to do. somethings just speak for themselves....

Sick Dayz
People understand when u slack off some at work, even admiring your fortitude for working under such duress (I make a head cold seem like Leukemia to all outward appearances, whatever); it's seen as polite when you deliberately avoid people you despise ("I'm sick as dog, best to stay over there, overly-happy-for-7:05 AM-religious-nut-job-with-a-bunch-of-pamphlets"); and also you can spend countless hours on your ass eating takeout in front of the TV, "recovering," and feel like you're doing the responsible thing. Roommates will even bring you things like the personal servants you always saw them as if you play it right. Yea...being sick is kinda the good life; it's like all the best parts of being disabled except you get to walk afterwards and you don't need someone else to clean the drool up off your chin. Anyway, I meant for this to somehow artfully segue into talking about upcoming Fall seasonal TV I'm pumped on, but I don't have the energy, *cough*, so I'll just get to it. Even though Project Runway is wrapping up I'm so psyched on TV for the fall. First of all, it's football season and the birds look good: Also, season two of the Sarah Connor Chronicles has kicked off proper. ...getting the mood right for Terminator 4: Salvation coming next May. As if that weren't enough....IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA new season STARTS TODAY! Let's get it Autumn.

NEW LAB RADIO (click box, duh!) This month my guests were…
NOSSA File these guys under "cool motherfuckers." I don't know what it is but I always get hyped when were on the same bill or I see them walk thru the door. I went by their (lucky duck) ultra plush Dumbo studio a few weeks back, when the heat was still giving those "I can't believe I came all the way to Brooklyn" wannabe model types something to sweat about. They switched up the style a little since the last CD the Lab was selling and it's all good. Now were looking at some Baile-Big Room? I don't know what to call it, but they played a bunch of it on the show and I think you'll like. I also decided to put a little more work into my show than usual and dropped the "Out Of Africa Mix" for you. The only reason I called it that is cause it starts with bongos and ends with bongos, whatever I like. Don’t forget you can now listen to the show on iTunes... iTunes → Radio → Dance → Turntable Lab LA Radio Been meaning to recap some of the parties I've been up to lately... so here goes. UNEMPLOYED LLOYDS' B-DAY BASH? What a bash it was. Sorry no pictures cause were too cool for that shit. It was so much fun that for once we were content without having to after-party (except sTERRYo who somehow ended up getting a second degree burn on his foot from bacon grease at like 7am, homie's still laid up in the bed with one of those Velcro shoes). Best memory of the night? Neal Nice falling "asleep" at the helm while djing and later apologizing to Lloyd that he never got a chance to spin. Hahaha you spun for like a half hour motherfucker!
RONSON'S B-DAY PARTY (LONDON)? I flew out to the UK to honor my good mate Mark on his 33rd B-day last week. Set in a mansion one-hour out side of London, this was like the party of all parties if you're into the 'epic' sort of thing. The theme was "dress as your favorite album cover." You know English people, they're so fucking clever, some of the costumes were brilliant. For me the cake went to a guy who dressed like the Stone Roses LP by covering an all white outfit in Jackson Pollack-esque paint splatters. I was kind of late to the game so I was gonna go as one of the Jungle Brothers (cause I had to shop for everything in the Dalston area, where African medallions are still available in large quantities). After I had gotten my whole costume together, Prince Terrence calls and says him, Santi and Naeem need me to be Ice Cube to complete their NWA (luckily that kit wasn't hard to find in Dalston either). After spending literally an entire day on these two costumes Naeem decides to show up as Santo Gold and the whole group thing gets fucked up. Fuck it at least I wasn't Eli, no one even told him it was a costume party. Here's Santi (Eazy), Lacrate and I.
Speaking of Lacrate here's a funny video thing about him and B-More, I might have to go on record (maybe the first) and say this guys alright with me. If your in Philly tonight (Friday) I'm playing there for the first time on some boat party with Brendan @ Paperstreet’s Mojito Party @ Moshulu. Next Tuesday i'll be spinning with MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUGHTS at the Scion Radio Party at Plan B (NYC)!!! So Psyched!!!

For the DJ's, these two products should sing away all your fader/headphone blues... Ortofon

Seeing as how Pete saw fit to put me down and in keeping w/ TTL blog quasi-newbie tradition I figured a little introduction would be in order. Dust La Rock's the name, you may know me as the tall, dark, handsome, and wildly talented art director of legend (Jokes! I'm neither tall nor handsome..) for Fool's Gold Records amongst other assorted sorties. I'm a Sagittarius, enjoy long walks down dark alleys whilst holding sharp objects, and despise onions in any shape or form. That said, let's jump into the fray.. Mike, the new blog is crack! I love Michael Jackson's tunes as much as the next cat, but below is a rather belated and contrary commentary on your MJ 50th B-Day post..

Here is a live set, recorded on tour with Bun B, August 2008: I record myself a lot (internally using the Rane TTM-57) but I rarely put up live sets. For the Scion tours I usually work out some sets and then do things a little different each night, but do certain transitions that I like the same way every time. A few transitions like the DJ Kool / Jay-Z thing, and the Dr Dre into MOP, are things I've been doing since last year and should probably retire, which is part of the reason I'm putting this out there... Anyhow this set is really two recordings from two different cities spliced together - part of a warmup set and then later on in the more hype part of the night. The edit point is "Mr. Scarface." I played a lot more Texas rap but it would be dumb to post that part of the set up because Houston for Dummies was the last podcast - http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/the-rub/~5/361468364/HoustonForDummies.mp3. Tracklist: * ABN - In My City * Gorilla Zoe - I'm Dumb * Turf Talk - Bring the Bass Back * Big Tuck ft Slim Thug - Not A Stain On Me (remix) * Dead Prez - Bigger Than Hip-Hop * Jadakiss ft Styles P - We Gonna Make It * Puff Daddy - Bad Boy For Life * Jaylib - The Red * Bozo Meko - Spread Love * The Roots ft Wale - Rising Up * Lupe Fiasco ft Young Jeezy - Superstar * Scarface - Mr Scarface * Geto Boys - Mind Playing Tricks On Me * Tupac - I Get Around * Outkast - ATLiens * Cool Breeze ft Dungeon Family - Watch For the Hook * DJ Spinna - Everybody Bounce * Memphis Bleek - Do My * DJ Kool - Let Me Clear My Throat * Beyonce - Crazy In Love * Jay-Z - PSA * Jay-Z - Roc Boys * Kanye West - Champion * Bobby Byrd - I Know You Got Soul * Bobby Byrd - I'm Coming * James Brown - Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved * 20th Century Steel Band - Heaven and Hell * Liquid Liquid - Cavern * Jim Dunloop and Marc Hype - The Mexican * LL Cool J - Jingling Baby * EPMD ft LL Cool J - Rampage * Busta Rhymes - Don't Touch Me * Busta Rhymes - Touch It * Kanye West - Stronger * Jay-Z - Encore * Kanye West - Touch The Sky * Dr Dre - Let's Get High * Dr Dre - Bitches Ain't Shit * Dr Dre - Next Episode * MOP - Ante Up * Nas - Made You Look Subscribe to The Rub podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/the-rub

it's not often that the rekkid gods look out for the kid stacks, but Jah blessed me this weekend with a long time want to the tune of less than a 12 pack of workin man's beer.
usually the labor day weekend sucks. maybe because it signifies the end of summer, i don't know ["i'm not an art critic]", but this weekend was safe. well except for these two lame pinball games that ate my quarters, and i had to play the Spiderman jawn. so anyways, here's to everyone who had an enjoyable weekend! seeeeeen?
