All works of art, high and low, betray a multitude of echoes of works that came before -- and in extraordinary cases, after -- them. In this series I'm gonna take an item up for sale over at the store and outline some of the echoes I perceive in it. Any facet of the release (the music, lyrics, production style, cover art, etc) are fair game for echo-mining. Some will be straightforward and obvious and some will be oblique or non sequitur-like; either way each will be presented with a minimum of commentary or justification (but I'll be right so don't test me). Here it goes. Echoes of PONI HOAX - HYPERCOMMUNICATION Echo 1: King - Won't You Hold My Hand Now (Also, this joint has one of the illest synth-fills ever. Theres a retarded extended solo in this live performance that shreds. You gotta sit through the ballad first.) Echo 2: Herb Ritts' Nood Doodz

Last night it was all about these two dudes straight murdering the 90s hip-hop shit Kind of reminded me of the Authentic Shit Party days at Table 50 back in the day Speaking of 90s hip-hop, it's interesting to see that Obama is a Fugees fan...check it... On the eve of the Democratic and Republican conventions, Blender polled Barack Obama and By Jon Coplon, Illustration by Eamo BARACK OBAMA JOHN McCAIN Do these guys have time for music? Better Sinatra song? Why’d they both pick Frankie Blue Eyes? Weirdest pick? Any snubs? McCain: Hip? Or hip replacement? Who gets your vote based solely on this list? -NN

Ok so. . . i'll probably get blasted for my independent thought here. OBAMA-BIDEN '08 but, for this O_AMA-BI_ _ _DEN to fit in there O[S]AMA-BI[N] [LA]DEN just seems a lil way too peculiar. . . and i'm not saying that the actors have anything to do with each other, i'm just pointing out how "easy" it seems to be to "scrabble" up the SAME "pieces" on the "chessboard." :-D -The Rain

yeeoooo, whatup everyone i'm a new poster on the blog. I internet know some of ya'll from the hollerboard (fu_k you private citizen), and Roc of course I know from 2 AM bathroom-stall rimjobs at Posh (holler, stud). Ayres linked me with Pete cause he was looking for a writer and he's decided to give me the coveted blog login to see if my ish fits in here (ahem). So I guess I'll be writing reviews and spotlights of new releases and weird features and stuff....but i might just resort to posting funny youtubez and pictures of sh*t i ate. Apparently this blog don't allow comments so I guess I won't know if any readers actually enjoy anything I write (or if any one actually reads this blog other than the people who post here for that matter), but F it. can u curse on this blog? anyway its a pleasure to be here. feel free to clown me at will.

So if any other designers want to get in the show just post up your flyer for Lloyds Party here or bring a copy to LOVE... These two are from sTERRYo, the first two were from me.

SO, there areother record stores in Ny besides Turntable Lab, I know shocking..... One of them is called Dope Jams. Its in brooklyn, and its def a bugged out place. They send out e-mails that rule here is the latest one... their reccomendation for a Sylvester reissue..... "Last night I attended the Manuel Gottsching performance at Club Love NYC. A few minutes into Göttsching’s set, in the silence following the enthusiastic applause for his classic “Shuttlecock” track, a lone individual in the crowd shouted enthusiastically, “Fuck her in the ass!” As I chuckled to myself, I was surprised to see the young man in question vocally denounced by his surrounding patrons for what they believed was an insulting, inappropriate and immature act. Clearly these attendees felt that the young man’s perverse proclamation was an attack on the integrity of the event, an insult to Göttsching’s legacy and his appearance that evening. I was surprised and taken aback as well, not with the young man but with the appalling show of conservativism on the part of these patrons, denouncing this young man for what was once the very energy and enthusiasm that fueled the legendary parties and club communities of NYC’s underground in years past. I can understand that some people came to the event expecting a conforming, pleasantly civil and relatively tame concert by the legendary kraut-rock pioneer (which is disturbing in itself); what I was most worried by was the fact that the majority of those who rose in anger against this youngster were themselves veterans of the party circuits of NYC’s legendary past. It seems they’ve forgotten the fun-loving, unrestrained, youthful energy that made the parties like the Paradise Garage, The Loft, Club Zanzibar & Body & SOUL so free, where the normal formalities and social constraints of everyday routine were washed away and impulsive, pleasure-seeking mania took over. I mean, seriously, think about it: if the flaming transsexuals that used to rule the party scene of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s were at the event in question, they would’ve been driven out the second they walked by the very people who are constantly pushing empty slogans like “It’s all about love" and "Everyone’s welcome!” down our throats. In reality, many of these so-called “party people” are too old (more so in attitude than age), too straight-laced, too concerned with their image and air of “maturity” and “sophistication” to even remember what was so free about the “Loft” all the way up to the not-so-long-gone Body & SOUL parties: these events were free-zones, unsoiled spaces of fraternity and pleasure where individuals were finally able to interact with each other without worrying about what they said, how they looked, who they knew and how cultured or respected they seemed. It never ceases to amaze me how often many of these completely out-of-touch elders of the dance music community talk about being “free,” about “love and happiness,” when they can’t even find the inner-child within them to let go of their idiotic pretenses and actually have a good time. In reality, their major concern is to ensure that House Music is perceived by the rest of the world as a legitimate and dignified “culture,” one that can be respected by the rich, the noble, the fashion world, the safeguards of accepted norms and standards for decency and discipline in society: to ensure that they keep their distance from street people, drag-queens and drug-addicts, so that they can finally be respected as discerning, unthreatening, dignified adults who have a place in this increasingly boring and very much UNspontaneous society. Something tells me that Sylvester did not draw his inspiration for the completely unrestrained, wildly energetic vocal belting of “Over & Over” from a gathering of 40 & 50 somethings who were more concerned with how they dressed and who they knew than having a good time. Equally less likely it seems that Sylvester would’ve made the brilliant, sex-obsessed “I Need Somebody to Love Tonight” after attending a party of married couples trying to relive their wilder days in the tamest way imaginable. And yet these brilliant songs are championed by the very same heads that would look at a drunken, lustful gathering of young adults now with patronizing disapproval. Dance music must push forward and stay free if it is to survive. Now is the time to change by recovering the old ways. BE FREE, always."

NEW LAB RADIO (click box, duh!) This month my guests were… Blaqstarr
When we went to record this session at Plan B, I sent out an email saying that Blaq and I were playing that night. Strangely enough Kweli is on my email list and hit me back right away saying something like “tell him to give me back my name, JKing.” Blaq’s response? “Tell him great minds think alike.” Than last weekend in SF my boy Smerv was telling me how Mos had put him onto Blaqstarr and how much he was praising him. Ok that was a bit of a tangent, but I always wondered what those guys thought of Blaqstarr using the name and I thought some of you might also. Did you know that this guy has over 1000 songs just chilling on his hard drives? He played a whole bunch of shit and than we talked about B-More, his production set-up and his sound. Definitely one of my favorite dudes in the game right now and his set and interview only further solidified that for me. Prince Language
Where the fuck has this guy been hiding? I took Mr. IncogNegroClash away from working on an MGMT remix for this segment. We talked about the good old days at the Lab, the Good Wolrd with Rich Medina, upcoming edits, what it’s like to know the DFA and the general downfall of modern civilization. His DJ set was what you’d expect of a Prince, Royal Jewelz. I guess the kids alright, cause he’s got a studio in the same building as Ronson. Don’t forget you can now listen to the show on iTunes... iTunes → Radio → Dance → Turntable Lab LA Radio While in the radio zone I should mention this movie I saw last night TALK TO ME about legendary DC radio DJ Petey Greene. I think Lloyd posted a clip of him demonstrating how to eat watermelon, this guys is the real deal!

i was out in SF this past weekend and caught Jemz playing at 330 Ritch. I'd yet to see the bandana headscarf thing in person, and didn't really understand the look he was going for. But then this girl came up and gave him a pound and she had one too. so i guess it's a movement? is it like a Keith Richards thing? clue me in. i'm feeling it. point is, great to see Jemz.
i was exploring some vacant spaces in the BK Navy Yard this afternoon,
and i came across this lovely tool.
it's hard to tell the scale from the crappy cellphone pic, but this thing was like 14" long. it was laying on a large pallet shelf that someone was using as a love den in this abandoned space. i see you Pitts!!!!! been watching BABY SNAKES on repeat these days. that's my hot tip.

Bogdan's Going Away Party Part 1 - Dj Harvey Boat Cruise... This was the pre-party to the insanity. Basically the whole boat was DJ's and their girlfriends, + a couple extra french dudes for good measure. There was one single girl on the boat, and she got lots of attention. Harvey killed it, selecting all the right tunes for the right moments. I swear he played the same reggae song twice, but it was so good (and rare obviously) i was psyched to hear it again. Part 2 coming soon....

last night was the first time in a good minute i actually went out and spun. linked up with my friends who i can't thank enough for letting me play, and we dropped a pretty serious 45 set on a rather calm wednesday evening. heads rolled when i told em to "stand up and cheer for the preacher [prea-cher!]"
now i'm not one to throw down on youtube clips, let alone watch madtv [uggh], but this-has-me-dying! some might not see the humor in it, but when you were bored at your friends house back in the Media General Cable days, you could get a nice solid day of watching Korean soap operas, probably broadcasted via some studio in Annandale similar to this one...

Treasure Fingers "Cross The Dancefloor" is out now on TTL Digital (2x12" gatefold vinyl coming soon!) and you can (and will!) purchase it here. The Lab description says "irresistible disco house bomb from Fool's Gold" and that pretty much nails it, but for some background... TF is the musical alias of Ashley Jones, ATL producer (and our new BK neighbor) who's made everything from hyper-caffinated drum n bass to mellow hip hop over the past few years, but stumbled upon something real special once he decided to unleash his inner R&B beast and started freaking out with vocoders and wobbly pop-funk chord progressions (I can't wait for people to hear his new stuff, it's like Larry Blackmon's codpiece wearing a Braves fitted). "Cross The Dancefloor" has been killing it in DJ promo form for a while, but make sure to pick up this newly mixed and mastered version. And of course there's REMIXES GALORE from Laidback Luke, Lifelike and Curses!, plus a "Shake-A-Pella" for your MASH. While you're at it, grab the vinyl-only Kid Sister Remix EP and the Kavinsky Blazer Picture disc. Check it in action! More new releases coming soon...
