Ok so, talking about purple crush is amazing and all.... BUT im deading that link for more PMA oriented material... Woody came thru the roctacrib the other day and checked out the new dj setup and the new mix cd im working on...
Im probably like 40 % done with this mix and its coming together really nice, im taking the time and crafting it in a real traditional way, 2 many shitty ableton mixes and crappy hipster things have forced me into action.....

Here's my two cents on the summer reading tip: any music lover that hasn't checked out at least one of the 33 1/3 series of books is really selling themselves short. There's over 50 in the series that range from The Smiths to Steely Dan, David Bowie and DJ Shadow. I just finished reading the making of Paul's Boutique for the second time around. Lots of very interesting tid bits and funny stories for you to read plus each book is pocket size so they're perfect for those late night subway rides (nevermind that goon staring at you from across the way on the J train)... Currently available online and in the NY and LA Lab stores. Peep their blog for more info: 33third.blogspot.com -NN

I'll jump in on the summer reading reviews:
Just finished this book coming out by Dr. Dre's mom. Not recommended... the writing is what you would expect from someone who dropped out of highschool. I read it to get some insight on Andre's rise to the top, but about 3/4ths of the book is about his mom, and her endeavors. Her story about her life is definitely interesting, but her execution doesn't deliver. Not to mention, anyone who knows basic NWA history won't learn anything they didn't already know.
This book, however, is a a good read. I'm about 1/3 way through, and cant put it down. Sonic Youth fan or not, you'll enjoy all the talk about the early New York art / nowave / punk / hardcore scenes. Very well documented, and the writing is superb. Not to mention, there are some crucial picts of my man Thurston throughout his younger years. In other news, I played my first game of Wizard Staff last week. Highly recommended.

Ok so I had a funny exchange with this twat who was sending remixes to anyone with a blog...
and Japattack..... when you get the google alert about this.... rember any press is good press and please dont kill youself just yet your entertaining... good for somthing at least.... I encourage everyone to try and make music and be a part of "the scene" even this talentless fuckwit, who knows maybe he'll kill it one day... nobody thought id do anything more than "be annoying" 10 years ago and nobody just steps on the scene a fully developed artist.... not even "Wes"

![]() The Art of Sexual Lovemaking, a Guide to a Happier Sex-Love Life for Married Couples by Frank Samuel Caprio A fascinating eye-opener and a book which has transformed the way I view lovemaking. Quite frankly something needed to be done to resurrect the physical side of my marriage which has been blighted in the main by my PE, and Caprio's guide seemed the perfect start. As the author makes clear, lovemaking is an art - an art whose media are the body AND the mind, with the lover as artist. I have every confidence that reading this guide will lead to a happier love life for my wife me, and will help me move on from my frustratingly Pollockesque form of abstract expressionism. 1. Start the JEMzOIRS. Here's a JEMzOIR for yeah, whose got a tank?
I came down to Miami to play a last minute set at a new club called Heathrow alongside Jamie Lidell. I had no idea that Lidell is actually really ill. Have you ever seen his live beat box thing? Spun a couple records at the Pop Life 9-Year anniversary and saw Free Blood perform live. They’re pretty fucking dope for just a Duo… We needed to get some R&R from our hectic reality series like LA lives, so Jonny and I checked into our favorite hotel in the world for a couple days.
Not only do they give you bottles of Khiel’s products in the bathrooms, they also make the only good non-Cuban Espresso in Miami. I talked Ross into stopping by the beach to hang.
Aramis (Obi-Wan), Jake Jefferson (Luke), Jonny (Han Solo) & Myself (Chewy) went by Mokai to check out Ross Tuesday night at his Favela Chic party (only South Beach shit thats really worth checking). I sat in the booth most of the time just tryna watch Ross, who’s been rumored to be one of the best Party DJ’s around right now. Usually the quick mix style drives me nuts, jerking from song to song with no regard for taste. But when in the right hands, like Ross’ it’s a beautiful thing. Damn kid. Miami I always hate leaving you, but I gotta go. If you 're in the area the homegirl Elle’s at Money Shot tonight.

no need for an editor's intro... let's get to know this DIY design folk hero whose been friends with the Lab since the early days. 1. can you give us your career path all the way from your first job? Here you go, im really bad with exact dates and all that but here’s the rough version…….. 1987-1988: Pizza Popper, Kenosha, WI the highlight was getting the tip of my finger caught in the dough roller a week after dropping a parking block on it
1989-1991: Piggly Wiggly, Kenosha, WI held shit down at the pig, worked up to head utility clerk, was a card carrying member of the UFCW local 1473, would take naps in the break room if I stayed out too late the night before. 1991-1992: Happenings Magazine, Kenosha, WI laying out a weekly coupon magazine that was given out free at grocery stores. Duties include getting shocks from an old ass stat camera, working 24+ hour shifts, waxing and pasting up a 80 page weekly magazine by hand on boards that would get sent out to have film made from them. 1992: 43d Studios Took out a loan for $5000 to buy a Centris 610 computer. start doing freelance design for rave flyers under the name 43d studios. Quickly realized most promoters don’t give me back my $45 44meg syquest discs and I would pretty much loose money on a lot of the jobs. Learned how CMYK and spot colors actually work from Pete D in Milwaukee. 1993-1995: the Weber Group, Racine, WI learn how the computer really works, did tons of type lock ups (called violaters) for brands like Toilet Duck and Drano stating that they now have “33% more active incredients”. start to realize this design stuff is actually a real job. Meet Allen Benedict who claims he is going to start a graf magazine called 12oz prophet someday. Struggle inc is born. Respect to Tony Weber for making learn how to use all the programs. 1995-1996: JDK, Burlington,VT the school I would have never had the money to go to. Met so many great designers and creatives. Life changing type of shit. respect to Michael Jager and David Covell and all the other greats I met there who put me on the right path. By the time I leave I end up art directing the snowboard line for Burton Snowboards. come to figure out that 16 hours days are the norm in graphic design. Start painting and drawing again, although mainly robots and drippy stuff. 1996: 12oz Prophet, Miami, FL move down to Miami (Kendall to be exact – “on the ave”), loose my first apartment within minutes of driving into the city because my dog is too big. Stay in the warehouse for awhile (with a hundred pound dog). Help Allen out with daily design duties on “12oz Prophet” magazine, “Straight from the Bottom” mailorder and eventually “The Vapors Project” 1997: Struggle Inc. move back to Chicago to do Struggle inc full time. Realize that shit is hard. Am broke quite a bit. Start drinking too much. Meet Seven from Chocolate Industries and slowly start to do most of the design work for his label. 1998: JDK, Burlington,VT after doing a lot of freelance design for JDK, I eventually go back for a year to work on some projects. I sleep on Jared Eberhardts loft floor in Winooski, VT for too long until I finally just move in to the place above his. once again I get to work with a lot of talented peoples (byron oneil, malcom buick, howard brown, ruby lee). 1999-2001: Ecko Unltd move to New Brunswick, New Jersey to try and get out of debt (across from the Lamp Post strip club). Basement apartment is completely full of roaches when I move in. Get to work with old JDK homie Jim “Jersey” Anfuso again. Start in the marketing graphics dept but get offered to go on a trip to Hong Kong with Marc Ecko to learn about garment design and jump on the chance. Eventually end up running the mens product graphics dept and along the way meeting many great people (PK, Dre Day, Dust La Rock, Pel, Kimou, Seph, Funderburgh). 2001-present: Struggle inc move back to Chicago to get my life back together. Wake up one of the first few days in my new apartment to phone calls from friends in NY/NJ telling me to turn the tv on (I don’t have one yet, but turn NPR on). Its 9/11. eventually I build up some good freelance clients. start painting more as well. start working with bigger clients (including Burton, Stussy, Nike). For the first time in my life can actually make a living off just doing “my own shit”. As things in my design career settle a bit I start to focus on painting and doing installation based work more. End up doing a lot of public found object installations with Juan Angel Chavez and Mike Genovese. Also join forces again with Allen from 12oz to art direct his new publication “Also Known As”. In Dec of 2007 had a solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (MCA). In 2008 released my new book “Save My Life”
2. what was it like doing the early issue of 12oz. Prophet? how did you organize the mag before the internet? I was always more on the design side and really I was more behind the scenes. But Allen had this great network of writers who would constantly send in big envelopes of flicks to the office. It was great in those days as if you got a photo in 12oz it was kind of a big deal so everyone was basically sending in photos. Now people can just look at blogs and the internet to see whats out there but in 1993 people really payed attention to the magazines. Also at the time I think we were doing some cool stuff and trying to bring a little more of a graphic design sense to the magazine. We also ran one of the first major interviews with Twist (Barry Mcgee) as well as giving the first US exposure to Os Gemeos with the Brasil issue.
3. what do you like about not working a typical desk job? Not having to wake up at a certain time, freedom to be away from the office for long periods of time, being able to take naps, drinking on the job during my night shifts. Being my own boss is great but also way more stressful. What I don’t like so much is really all the pressure as its pretty much all on me.
4. how do you handle clients with too many revisions and changes? I usually just stop working with them after the project is done. If a project is a real hassle then it’s really not worth it. Although I’m in a lucky position where I have a few select clients and have pretty good relationships with most of them so it’s usually not bad. 5. what do you miss about a typical desk job? Human interaction & weekly paychecks
6. who are your design + work + life influences? I tend to look back at the older guys for design. I was definitely influenced early on by the likes of Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Bruno Munari, Josef Muller-Brockmann, & Milton Glaser. also all the Archigram architecture based stuff influenced me quite a bit. 7. what are some cool things that you have found or bought that have influenced your ideas? I used to collect a lot of old design books but they seem to be getting harder to find these days. Im not trying to get them on ebay so you have to dig a bit deeper. QUICK HITTERS... five favorite albums, son. Hard to narrow it down, as so many records have certain meaning to me, but just for the sake of keeping it quick, ill list a few that have made a difference in my life. After The Goldrush – Neil Young Take It From The Man – The Brian Jonestown Massacre The Boy With The Arab Strap – Belle and Sebastian Follow the Leader – Eric B & Rakim Complete discography - Minor Threat Criminal Minded – BDP Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco
a girl you hate to admit that you have crush on Lita Ford top 5 favorite foods Char dog from Hot Dougs BLT from Café Lula (had one for lunch today) Pastrami sandwich from Mannys Metallica burger from Kumas Queso Fundido at Uncle Julios
the things that matter most in this mortal life. Being true to yourself and your family while trying to be a good person and trying to stay happy

Here are my music picks for this week, using the new "Kiddish to Grown" ranking system... According to Rezound, Ninjasonik made the kids go so crazy at Knitting factory they're never allowed back. Sabo is old like me, but has a young face, so he gets the cuties(like me also). BEST RECORD on the site right now I'll probably still be listening to this when I'm 84. And roll out the red carpet for the summer season of and this is perfect for all you young DIY business minded producer types, I know ya'll are multiplying exponentially in the burbs somewhere... Lots more on the way... PS. Cool flyer post, but Blu Jemz still says "mad" and "son" way too much to rep the West. Gotta even it out with more "dude's" and "hella's" bro-man!

This month I decided to take it easy on the guests and just play some beats, mad beats Son! Good background music, too bad you can’t play it in the whip, cause you would definitely wanna TURN IT UP!!! I did get one guest mix from…
CHESCA I met this young lady thru Gaslamp Killer on a recent trip to the UK. She makes her own beats (programs the drums and everything), sings (she’s currently working with one of our fav’’s Dam Funk among others) and in this case is nice on the turntables also. This mix is full of all kinds of 80’s Funk and Boogie that will have even the most avid fan stumped!. TUNE IN! Here's a couple parties...

Went to see Nas perform to a super intimate crowd yesterday in the LES. Dante Ross was there and he couldn't have summed up the night better... "Another humdinger in the Alife backyard. It was as packed as I have ever seen. NAS celebrated his album release with a preview performance of a bunch of new tunes from his untiled record. I have the record and it's brightest moments are nothing short of brilliant as Nas challenges Black and White America to stand up and make a change and questions amongst other things our goverment ( Hero ft. Keri Hilson), our upcoming elections( Black President) and the N word ( They say were Ni....). It's an important record and it's best moments are some of the best of NAS' whole lengthy career. That said Nas came through and just straight killed it. The casual backyard vibe and his comfort zone with the audience who knew the words even when he didn't was something to marvel at. Seeing Nas rock literally 15 feet away from me made for a great time. Add a bunch of OG friends of mine in the house this was one for the record books." Here's video of Nas starting things off with NY State Of Mind and then Represent on into Make You Look. Thanks for the footy Dante...One LtotheOVE!

allright Michna, ill work on more posting but all i really have left in this life is long hours in the studio, meat products, beer and whisky. also i thought you guys were getting sick of seeing what i eat for lunch. but if not heres a recent meal. i've been going to Kuma's Corner quite a bit lately with Ben Fasman. it's a great bar/ hamburger spot where all the burgers are named after metal bands. i want to try out some of the random burgers but the Metallica and Iron Maiden are so good i usually get one of those. but last night figured id switch it up and get the High On Fire. heres whats on top of it: Siracha Hot Chili Sauce, Prosciutto, Roasted Red Pepper, Grilled Pineapple, Sweet Chili Paste Ben switched it up as well and got the Slayer: which is a Pile of fries topped with a ½ lb. Burger, Chili, Cherry Peppers, Andouille, Onions, Jack Cheese, and Anger if you are in chicago and like either metal or burgers (or preferably both), you should check it out.

this past weekend was like blasting Schooly's "Saturday Night" on repeat everyday. besides having lots of fun, and watching the cops not be able to do a damn thing with all the illegal fireworks [all fireworks are illegal in DC] going off on every block, i watched Subzero's old "Real Life" video for the first time in about 10 years. camera dude could not keep up with Ricky is all i gotta say. still amazing after all that time and young kids should look to videos like that for local inspiration. also, big shout outs to "Dianne," who i think is the only Albanian girl in the whole city. heads don't know the deal. we flexed our right to assemble on this rooftop, throwing packs of blackcats below to the street carryout is key all i stack, and i stack it well speaking of bikes and dk stems, i've been pulling this out every sunny chance i can get to ride it to and from the store *BONUS*

I promise you this is worth it: Induce posted this on his blog first, spouting his justified hatred of hippies. But while watching it I was not filled with hatred, rather I was filled with sheer amazement that this could exist so long after Rusted Root was clowned to death. HOW DOES THIS EXIST IN THE YEAR 2008?! Seriously, doesn't the cumulative effect of everyone in your life laughing in your face because they think that your entire value system is a joke sort of grate you down after a while? If while watching this you were like "ok this is obviously a joke. I guess it's pretty well done" let me assure you this is 100% real. If you doubt me, their website offers you more examples of their earnest, heartfelt Jah-praising, as well as some candid laid back pics of the band at home, such as this one: Here is another taste of the rich, rich mine of pointing/laughing/shaking your head/pondering the fate of humanity you will experience on their site... they list the band personnel thusly: HannaH(Psychedelic Woman): No dear reader, that "HannaH" is not a typo, she is constantly referred to as "HannaH" because it's a palindrome maybe? Maybe because it's meant to be consciousness-expanding? The dude ACTUALLY CREDITS HIMSELF WITH PROVIDING VIBRATIONS. Also, he plays the "djembe" which is my go-to joke when making fun of hippies. No rain stick? If you go to their site, I highly recommend listening to "Praise Jah." That thing you once called your intact mind will leak out of your ears. Either that or you'll throw a chair at your computer.

So now when somebody says "yo, he killed that show," they really mean that the performer brought out a guitar and did his own rendition of 90's top Brit-rock. - Rainey

The name of the game is Grillin' and chillin', all weekend long. Here's some picks to go along with the party... Don't just drop some lime on your BBQ'd Shramp, check this from France, but still rules... Summer selections from Chocolate Kevin Lyons X HVW8 bites the big one, but what the hey! Urban Arts (Tom Lessner) - gets me everytime some of the best summer shirts ever from Lemar & Dauley And this should be named "Banksy: Secret Origins Book" and scratching not all dead, check these...

Uh Oh Spaghetti' O's!!! Looks like the Purple Crush posse caught wind of The Roc's BEMF memo!!! Here's what they had to say via a recent myspace bulletin... "look guys, im sorry someone else thought of it first, and im really sorry you weren't invited, but there's this thing called dancing that you and your friends dont seem to participate in nor provide the atmosphere for at your own parties..." "but thanks for posting a link to our myspizz..."

So here is The BEMF Way to rip off one of the top electronic and dance music oriented events in the country..... At the DETROIT ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL they have people like Benny Benassi, Deadmau5, Carl Craig, Theo Parrish, Josh Wink, Richie Hawtin, and on and on and on... the biggest names in dance with an emphasis on techno.... So somebody had ripped of the name steez for a brooklyn electronic festival but instead of real ill stuff it looks like Purple Crush supported by ill djs like Cobra Krames and Neon Coyote????? Whoever is putting this together your a herb and should be ashamed of yourself.......
