leandro and crew took us all into a favela party for inspiration. for obvious reasons i did not take any pictures. when we got there the first thing i saw was a basketball sized arena packed with people in the middle dancing with machine guns in the air. along the length of the arena was a wall of speakers, about 60 feet long and 18 feet high. everything was rattling and the bass was bold. then the music stopped and everyone scattered to the outside soundsystem, that was a bit smaller with all the speaker grills painted up. they also had fireworks, trannys and hotdogs covered in corn. every 20 minutes or so the soundsystems would alternate. the djs were using mpc's loaded with gunshots and frog ribbits. to the right of all this was a football field closed off by more machine gun guys. it was impressive, i feared for my life, and if i was white i would not go there.

Have you guys ever seen The Meteor Man?

This movie is amazing! Just look at the cast...

Sinbad, James Earl Jones, Don Cheadle, Big Daddy Kane, Bill Cosby, Aunt Esther, Benson, Biz Markie, Florence, Eddie Griffin, John Witherspoon and Deebo getting his ass kicked.

So good I can't believe Unemployed Lloyd isn't in it.

Here's a taste...

For real get off that Reality Bites shit, MAD GAY! I mean I'm a big Stiller/Garofalo fan (I watch Mystery Men every time it's on cable) but come on!

If you don't like Reality Bites come to our pool party July 4th!!!

Rescue Me was filming on our block today. There's always shit filming on our block (most recently, this abortion and the Taking of Pelham One Two Three remake) but this was different because (a) Erock and myself are big nerds for that show and (2) they scattered "bodies," clothes and fake ashes all up and down the street. Sadly, no sightings of Denis Leary's smokin show daughter.

Below are a couple shots from my Cannon Elph digital camera, which was 1.8 megapixels back then.

Not to Keep this crap going but....

my hip hop sets are mediocre compaired to people like Eli Escobar, Riz or dj scratch and a million other tru masters of that shit...

That night is one of my fondest memories of my first couple years in NY and maybe my entire life. I was on point 100% killing it that night. Classics, into Classic hip hop, into 80s and dance classics into disco and a couple rare groove type things. I was on a mission to shine that night and i fucking killed it with a capital K....

big songs from that set at apt...

D Train Your the One for Me
Bobby Caldwell Open your Eyes
Human League "Dont You Want Me"
Also the first time I played "Barley Breaking Even" out wich became an anthem among that crew...

If you knew how many gigs I got because of that set, its almost criminal, tons of fill ins at APT and it directly led to residency at Bungalow 8....... Wich basically led to me making kelly clarkson mash ups instead of doing dope sets of dope music..... OH WELL!!!!!

digging for those old pics, i found this gem from 04.

see, tony is a complex character. he grew up in the heart of italian america (sheepshead bay, bk) then moved to atlanta when he was 10. this picture was taken during a time when he was examining his guido roots. he got his mom to buy him (like a true guido) several velour Sean Jean track suits. He would rock one everyday with those guido nikes... the pinky ring was planned, but never purchased. this phase lasted for a couple months.

apt-monk-flyer.jpg

not to get all nostalgic but
what about the monk's dream launch party
one of my favorite Lab parties ever.

apt-monk-1.jpg
i called wes up to come up from philly, think it was one of his first times djing in ny.
he killed the early set with psyche breaks and doubles... (pre-Hollertronix)
check out his steez back then, he's like the Chad Muska of DJing...
i remember roc telling me how he thought wes was a cool dude (highly irregular for old school roc)

apt-monk-2.jpg
nice helmet! roc killed it with his patented middle school set. i can't inflate roc's ego any more, but seriously, his classic hip-hop sets are untouchable.

apt-monk-3.jpg
monk was monk. solid.

best. crew. photo. ever.
lloyd hates this pic, it doesn't show off his normal baby face self.

here's the visual to go along with Woody's post....
woodman-holler.jpg
this was prob Woody's biggest gig at the time, so he came out with the extra-special black button up with embroidered roses. that is how it should be done... no new eras + XL promo shirts!

as for the subject at hand...
i've come to accept that time was a unique time specific to the time period.
it just isn't possible anymore...
maybe it will manifest itself again in another 20 years,
and all the old dudes will come of retire and spin songs like "sippin on sizzurp"
and have Language write a review about the event (then a rebuttal by the roc)... which reminds me, what happened to Bob Bannister?
also, me and jasper been trying to get this book started.

In direct response to Roc's introspective last post:

Considering that I'm 24, I totally (technically) missed out on most if not all of the dope NYC dj/music scenes--everything from Punk, Post Punk, No-Wave, Rave, even some golden 80's-90's Hip Hop goodness.

You name it, chances are I wasn't there to experience it first hand. And not that I can offer much at my point "in the game," or that I'm existentially sweeping up the concerns, but. . .

Really, I owe my "better" taste to the tons mediocre stuff out there, just like that stuff has helped breed the class of Lab All-Stars that I've learned to pick up the real gems from:

Snack + Cmish, Jemz, Lloydski, Wood, Bog, Michna, Roc, etc. Hell, even Pete!!!

Romanthony, infinitely more interesting and talented than Daft Punk, also the only reason 9 out of 10 people have heard of Daft Punk...

Is it wrong that I loathe everyone?

I long for the days between the shitty backpack era and the dawn of Hollertronix..... Seemed like anything was possable and djing was still exciting...

Actually I still feel like anything is possable and djing is still exciting its just the ammount of fucking horrendous bullshit one has to wade thru to find any truth today is exhausting..... Everything seems like some sort of snide joke, nobody seems invested in anything except self promotion and Djs have never been worse.....

Its a bit ironic that to me it seems like Mad Decent is one of the few labels and groups of people that is still devoted to putting out interesting and exciting music, everyone else from that scene seems to have setteled for a quick buck, and flash in the pan releases... I just want to tip my hat to them and say keep it up, I dont always like what you put out but you believe in it and do it because you love this shit as much as people like I do, I appriciate ya'lls integrity......

That being said, kids are dancing, doing drugs, having fun, the economy is fucked, all types of strange music is coming out, shit kinda rules its just a lot more work sifting thru everything......

institubes-logo-big.jpg

an interview with label head Jean-René Etienne

what is the story of how the label was started?
Classic story of some friends really into music and sharing the same tastes, more or less, and sometimes the same women. We just decided to set up shop and that was it. Tacteel had released an EP and we were convinced that Para One had to follow suit and go solo as well. He was mostly doing beats for TTC at the time. We believed that his sound was new and unique and we were right: if you listen to our (and his) first 12", "Beat Down EP", it's really a crucible for most of the so-called "French sound" that came two or three years later. We found a distributor and learned most of the trade as a hobby, and the rest we still don't know.

your 3 favorite records on Institubes
You really want to get me in trouble with my artists? I love them all, yo.

favorite meal to eat in Paris
Thai food.

Besides Drop The Lime, Is there anyone else you have your eyes (and ears) on in the U.S.?
http://www.myspace.com/iheartlovelock Coming this fall on Institubes Eagle.

What do you feel about the Tecktonik craze in Paris, and do people Tecktonik to Institubes music?
Tecktonik... I hear there are some videos online showing people demoing their "killer moves" to our tracks but I'm not into it at all, sorry, I love dance crazes but this one doesn't look good. I don't like the logo, I don't like the clothes, I hate the whole throwback electroclash thing going on with their hair, I don't like that they're peddling dance tutorial DVDs like there's no tomorrow. Some jumpstyle/hardstyle tracks are really cool but they're not that specific to the trend. Also, I don't know what I mean by this but I feel I can't trust them.

Who thought of the name Institubes and what does it mean?
I can't remember who came up with it, Teki or Tacteel probably, and in retrospect it's interesting to note that we chose a name that translates badly in English. It's either we didn't have much ambition, either we didn't give a fuck about the rest of the world--you decide. It's a portmanteau fusing "institut", which means "institute", and "tubes" which translates as "hits", as in "radio hit". So apparently that's what we wanted to be: some kind of consortium dedicated to churning hit after hit. We were setting us up for failure, obviously, but we're French so to us failure has a certain panache. I ditched the whole "laboratory" pretense a long time ago, now I freely admit that we're just flailing about in the general direction of persistence.

From what you've seen, who has more dog shit, Brooklyn or Paris?
Paris is the worst. I come from Martinique, where people do not worship dogs, and everytime I would come on vacation, it was a shock. I've been living here for more than ten years now and I'm still not used to it. Sometimes I feel I won't be happy till the last dog is hung with the guts of the last elderly woman but most of the time it makes me sad, it's like all those turds are testaments to the loneliness of the people. I know this was the token tell-us-something-uncool-about-Paris question and I know I should have made a joke but really, somebody has to take action. Either by helping the old ladies out of their solitude, or by finding a way to scrub the city clean.

Is it true that Bobmo made "To The Bobmobile" on the PS2?
Nope, not this one.

Do you see much difference between playing digital or vinyl? Which do you prefer?
I'm not a DJ but I can see the difference between the two. Most of the INS boys play digital, because they're so young and/or because it allows them to do things you'd need four turntables and extraordinary hand/eye/ear coordination to pull off. The Ableton Live/UC-33 combo is often a tool to fake your way through a hypemachine-powered set, which is depressing, but we had bad DJs in the vinyl era as well.

How do you see the Institubes sound evolving in 2008 and beyond?
Way I see it, we will still wave in and out of club music, put out more and more rap and become more of an albums label, what with Tacteel, Cuizinier, Surkin and Curses! writing their first LPs and Para One his second. Some of these will be more pop than you'd expect. We have a number of straight up clubby-club-club offerings planned though, by Jean Nipon, High Powered Boys, Bobmo, Das Glow, Orgasmic, and some truly weird records coming up--in fact you could say that this is one of our main directions for the future: weirdness. More unsellable stuff. Bankruptcy is slated for 2010, by the way. Plus we have David Rubato, who's a true wild card, nobody knows what he will come up with. But I ramble, I guess you'll have to tune in and hear for yourself.

What are your feelings on music blogs and the whole "blog-house" hype?
I really like the idea that so many kids are just taking matters into their own hands. Some are very talented, some are mediocre, but that's the way it universally is. More power to them. One problem, though: their medium of choice is quite susceptible to memes and it's way too easy to repost mp3s under a funny title and a picture of some overeager hipster bitch. It's supposed to be the world wide web but blogs can be oddly provincial, insular, even solipsistic.

Now, "blog-house", I don't really know what that is, but in LA I went to this house and there was some scruffy girl passed out half-naked in the bedroom, in the living-room people played Rock Band like their life depended on it, and you had some CDJs lying around, and on the fridge, next to a picture of Shawty Lo pasted on Pedro Winter's body, there was this sign: WELCOME TO THE BLOG HOUSE.

Apparently all you need to be a "20th Century Master" is to have had one #1 single in your entire life. Also it helps if you masturbated to Cindy Crawford and had Beavis & Butthead think you were women:

It has oft been stated that genius languishes in obscurity, never to be discovered til long after that genius has passed (see: HP Lovecraft, Kakfa, etc), but sometimes genius and mastery over an entire century can be achieved in your (and my!) lifetime, and still I will have literally no idea who the fuck you are:

I had already purchased the Silverchair and Len installments in the "Unmitigated Geniuses & Iconoclastic Cultural Zeitgeist Champions of Modernity" series to pick up this little number:

Ahh and of course here we reach the apex of modern civilization. I speak not of the wheel, the cotton gin, the printing press, or harnessing electricity, but rather of a gaggle of dongbirds in the early 90s getting together and thinking it would be a great idea to play a bunch of horns but not be a ska band. Ahh Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, is there anything less cool than swing revival? Anything at all? Finally! A recycled genre of music that is unique to my generation! And by my generation, I mean my grandparents' generation!

Other mind-blowers include:
THREE volumes of Kiss
one for LA Guns, but none for GNR
one for Donny Osmond, one for Donny & Marie Osmond, and one for the Osmonds

NEW LAB LA RADIO

This month’s guests…

EROL ALKAN

Scion set this up during WMC and told me I’d have to be in the “radio room” at like 10:30 am to interview Erol. If you’ve ever been to WMC you know that that is an un-godly hour. I dragged my self out of bed, through on my sunglasses and headed downstairs to what I thought was a radio interview. When I get to the room The Rub dudes are all sitting there bright-eyed & bushy tailed surrounded by video cameras. When I say “oh shit this is a video interview?” The whole room erupts in laughter (like I’m the retard for wanting to be asleep). Luckily Erol ended up postponing the interview till the afternoon, Nice!

For some reason I was really nervous about doing this interview and I was just walking around the Raleigh party all day asking people what they thought I should ask the world’s coolest DJ. Luckily Alkan-Fan Club member #1, Greg from the Acid Girls was down to come help me. The result? Erol’s the ultimate homie. We asked him about everything except Trash. He let us in on production secrets for bands and beats, how he manages to blow up with out going pop and any other super-cool topics we could come up with (quite heavy shit). Wish I had his dj set recorded from that day, pretty fucking radical dude!

DJ SCRATCH

Scratch is all business (must have learned it from EPMD), he even showed up in a designer suit to Plan B in the middle of the day to interview. He had just installed Serato on a new laptop and it wasn’t working with the 57. I told him it was probably because his version was too new and that I had the older version on my jump drive. So I gave him and Prince Paul the drive to take it off and all of a sudden the two of them start bugging like “yo what the fuck is this virus shit?!!” I had forgotten that I named my drive “Jemz Virus.” When I explained it to the two of them the comedy was lost. All I remember was Scratch asking “Why would you do that?” and Paul like “That’s really weird yo!” It’s funny as a kid I use to think meeting Prince Paul was all I needed to do, instead he likes dudes like Paul Barman and thinks I’m “weird.” Oh well.

The interview was dope. Did you know he made the Rampage beat on a 8 sec sampler and 4-track? He gets into more shit like that, as well as early ‘80s roller rink circuit stories, interesting stuff. Plus he gave us the ill EPMD best of set that’s perfect for the summertime.

THE ARAB PARROT

The Parrot lives around the corner from where we record so he came thru to chill too… He played some funny shit but got all clammy on the mic.

SPEAKING OF SCION RADIO…

THIS TUESDAY JUNE 17th I WILL BE BACK IN NYC DJING ALONG SIDE:

speaking of the untimely passing of Tim Russert, it'll be a sad day when this guy goes. Meet The Press came on right after this joint- of which i, nor my school, was ever on...

Rest In Peace

g-080613-cvr-tim-russert-12p.grid-6x2.jpg

Tim Russert
NBC Washington bureau chief / ‘Meet the Press’ moderator
Died at 58 due to heart attack

Unbelievable, he is simply the best, the equivalent to the entire Inside the NBA TNT cast passing away, along with Marv Albert, the Czar, and Kevin Harlan dying all at the same time. I guess the long, strenuous presidential campaign took a toll on him, I cant imagine this historic presidential race without him. The news of Russert passing totally nullified the great news that came out of Chicago today (and no, it wasn't from the Obama campaign....)

Not Guilty

Well, summer is finally here, time to burn some dough! May I suggest some of these fine newies?

Last last thursday the Money Shot Crew in Miami organised a release party for the TTL x Stussy vinyl shirt box. Fun was had by all...When I woke up on Friday they were all , "you coming to Blowfly tonite?" --a great suprise. Otto Von Schirach opened (i moshed) , then late in the night the man appeared...
blow1.jpg
since there was no green room, Blowfly had to hang out at Nastie's house watching TV until it was time to perform. Nastie's roomates were all "who's this guy on our couch watching our TV"
blow2.jpg
of course he pulled the miami ladies on stage..
blow3.jpg
at times he reminded me of a MF Doom X James Brown
blow4.jpg
highlight was at the end, jake, Induce and I went up to him and asked if he would mind signing Induce's blowfly LP's and 45's. I figured he'd either be like "go away" or "hell yea!" he was the ladder. Clarence Reid was fired up and ready to go. He drew big penises on the records, and scribbled his name on every record. He started telling us stores about Betty Wright, Donna Summer and Michael Jackson -all in rhyme. you name it he was telling you stories. so i asked him if he ever played in Japan. he said "NO --BUT I'LL BUTTFUCK GODZILLA"

Bukkake Guidelines

BUKKAKE
1. First do your paperwork before you are brought onto set. AIM test and picture ID (passport, DL, state, military etc.)
Call time 7:00 when we start doing paperwork.
2. After you pop go to the paperwork manger with proof of pop which will be given to you on the set by the PA.
Give him your name, he will mark it off on release.
This is to alleviate the problem of not knowing who got paid.
Also you get paid one time. Pop all you want you get paid once.
FIRST 50 PEOPLE WHO GET PAID IN CASH.
If you are late cumming (i.e. after the first 50) you will complete a form with the paperwork manager and will get paid with a check at the next bukkake. This is due to the problems at previous bukkake’s about other people taking money that was not due to them.
Please be quiet on the set so we can get though this in a professional manner. Do not shove your fingers in the female actress’s cunt or asshole during the cover photo session. Usually when you do this you come off as a loser and people will think you’ve never been with a female before. If you have never been with a girl before alert the paperwork manager and he will show you a picture of a pussy so you are not overwhelmed. We understand…
During the segment where the girl is filmed masturbating for you please be quite. Do not talk to the girl as this hinders filming.
Management realizes you want to show all the others you are a well traveled porn stud and know all the talent but this is very annoying and only slows down the production. We are sure if you work as much as you say you do you will run into her later.

BEATS-NYCFlyer.jpg

Come thru and check out these DJ's as they flaunt the latest fashions (all dj fashion show starts at midnight).

Also I came up with a new term for members of our community this weekend...
TEENAGE DJ'S

While most of these kids are well out of their teens, I think this title fits because they know about as much about records as I did when I was a teenager.

Here's how you can spot them...

1- Big emphasis on playing records that Daft Punk, Armand, etc sampled in their "disco sets" (at first I was genuinely impressed with their deep knowledge of these records, than I realized there are like 10 million blogs that list and post these records).

2 - Instead of saying they "really love" a dj or "the dj killed it" they say things like "that guy really know his shit." This implies that the Teenage DJ's blog base of music knowledge is somehow comparable to someone's who shaped the game like a Cosmo Vitelli.

3 - Talking to them about music makes your stomach cringe in the same way as Estelle's lyrics on American Boy.

4 - They never stop trying to get gigs or setting up photo op's (squeaky wheel theory).

5 - They've heard of everything except Moodymann & Second Cousins...

To be honest this isn't some hater shit, just an observation. I prefer this generation to the "Too Cool DJs" of my generation who just sit around and complain about how they have to "go to work" making $500 an hour.

stackswell graphic inspiration 001

before the lab manifested in '99 and ph had my attention with his design & sticker game, ego trip magazine was there. essentially they gave me some of my earliest inspiration(s) on how to apply creativity to what i was interested in; clean type, placement, and strong images. all revolving around the 5 elements of hip-hop [the 5th being guacamole] in some form or another.

these are a couple of examples that i find to be perfect.
