more finds from the lab boxes

petesboxes2-1.jpg
a box of binders... a vestage of our pre-digital e-commerce days. why the hell we kept these for so long, i don't know. anyway, to say we knew shit about business when we started the lab is an understatement. our first mixer sold was a fraudulent order. price margins? we calculated them wrong. and keeping track of orders... i think we kept a notebook where we'd write down your name and have check boxes like processed, shipped (with a bunch of check boxes in between)...

then my roommate, who worked at Other Music, told me that they printed out all the orders, put them in binders by order number, and stamped them when orders were shipped. this was better than the notebook, so we aped it. so everytime yall called about an order, we'd have to locate the correct binder, locate the order in the binder, and hopefully there was a stamp on it. at the peak, we had 100 of these binders in the office. it was paper-induced madness with pages falling out and binder rings breaking. i'd like to think we've come a long way....

petesboxes2-2.jpg
who the hell keeps a funkmaster flex sticker for so long?
when i first came to NY, the term "quality of life" wasn't around yet. every flat surface downtown was bombed with hip-hop stickers. packs of grimy kids (aka the Street Team, Moe Choi ran one) went around slapping stickers everywhere. i'd walk around with my head up looking at all the cool shit that would change daily... it was really effective too: everyone knew when the next GZA or Mic Geronimo album was dropping (thanks to giant 8.5" x 11" stickers everywhere)...

petesboxes2-3.jpg
De La's Stakes Is High campaign was one of the most fruitful for the hip-hop nerdus. They put out all sorts of limited edition shit like those 12"s they only had at Fat Beats, those Rocksteady lanyards, import Dilla remix... one week, the streets were bombed with the blue version of the sticker above, then a couple weeks later they came these orange ones with the words flipped...

petesboxes2-4.jpg
these aren't graf stickers, i found these in a market at Thailand. i still don't what they say. some lucky lab customer will get these in his box...

petesboxes2-7.jpg
haha... early computerized graf sticker. i made this in the computer lab at Stern (the business school at NYU). i was using paint bucket or something and there was no anti-aliasing, so it was basically pixel art. this was our crew Freshman year... all city we weren't.

petesboxes2-8.jpg
club kids were HUGE when i first came to nyu... they ran the city... shit would never happen now. one of the dudes in my dorm was Baby Joe, who was a key player in that whole Limelight scandal (he later started that avant garde fashion store, 7, in soho), he got us into a some clubs... and we'd hear crazy stories about Disco 2000 parties where'd they would pass out twinkies laced with MDMA... shit was weird, no one drank back then...

petesboxes2-5.jpg
finally, a keeper...

petesboxes2-9.jpg
ok, one more for today... this was a pic from our first office in my apartment on 12th street. this was like the meeting of the turntablist powers! sugarcuts, excess, p-trix and his crew... plus Frogman.... they're holding up the Tableturns shirt I designed... that was like the second shirt i designed (the first was the TURNT(L)ABLE one)... there was probably a major skratch sesh that night and probably passed a blunt of some garbage weed... haha

my first 1200
SNACKMASTER

what was your first turntable / setup?
It was in '95 and I had the Linear Tech belt drives with quarters taped to the headshells and a jank Gem Sound mixer with 5 second sampler.

at what point did you get your first technics turntable(s)?
I worked at a ghetto arcade/pizza place at the time (like a bootleg Chuck E. Cheese) and I told a co-worker of mine I recently got turntables. He told me his Dad was a radio DJ in the 70's and that he might have an extra turntable in his garage. We went to check it out and it turned out to be a SL-1200MK2... I seriously couldn't believe it! He ended up leaving it at my place since I had the mixer and another turntable on a condition that he could come over whenever and practice scratching on it. So for about a year or so I had a bastard setup of 1 Technics and 1 Linear Tech, but it was good enough for endless beginner scratch sessions till my cuticles were all raw from trying to "crab".

did you get the 1200(s) from a store? how did you get the money to pay for the 1200(s)?
I finally bought my own 1200 at K&K Music in San Jose after saving all summer from the Pizza Arcade and getting some money from djing some yuppie kids' bday party (my first paid dj gig). I still remember the 45 minute drive home from the store and just staring at it with anticipation in the passenger seat as if it were a hot date. I was equally mesmerized like this about a year later when I drove home with a Vestax PMC-05 Pro.

how did you feel when you got your first technics turntable(s)?
Bad ass. Like "Now I'm playing with power!"

what is your favorite feature or aspect of the technics turntable?
I like the fact I feel I can "trust" the pitch control, and of course the reliability and sturdiness. I've transported my pair in the most unprofessional, ghetto ways imaginable (no case under the arm, wrapped in a sleeping bag in a card board box and shipped on a plane, etc.) and they still work great - 10 years + and not a trip to the maintenance guy.

my first 1200
PEANUT BUTTER WOLF

what was your first turntable / setup?
I had a Realistic mixer, a Fisher turntable with no pitch control and a Panasonic turntable with pitch control. This was when I was 14 in 1984.

at what point did you get your first technics turntable(s)?
I used to use my roommates for several years, but didn't have my own pair til around 1995. I think I bought them one at a time in a 2 year period. Even the scratches I did on the album I did with Charizma in the early 90's were done with some off-brand turntable.

did you get the 1200(s) from a store? how did you get the money to pay for the 1200(s)?
I got them new at Guitar Center up in the Bay Area. Don't remember where I saved the money up from, but it was probably my job at a record distributor. I still have the same pair today and have never had to bring them into the shop. Besides the lights burning out, they're still good.

how did you feel when you got your first technics turntable(s)?
I was excited because my when you scratch with them, it has a certain sound that you can't create as easily with other turntables. I got to really practice my mixing more as well. I started as a DJ, but when I started getting drum machines and samplers in the late 80's, I got more into making beats. When I got the 1200's, I got back into Djing again. Making mix tapes and spinning at clubs.

what is your favorite feature or aspect of the technics turntable?
It's not even so much about a feature. It's just the way it feels when you use it. It's really responsive. I've tried other turntables from every major brand and they don't compare.

new segment...

ADVENTURES IN BISCUIT LAND

bis_1.jpg

For those un-familiar, Biscuit is a self proclaimed homeless record dealer who has been a part of the Lab LA store since it first opened. Just about every employee has had some type of run in with him and for most of us they've ended in screaming battles. So why do we keep letting him back in our lives? The only used records worth mentioning that I've bought since I moved here were from him, I mean really good. He even once told me James Murphy bite Lloyd-Ski's old disco mix for his Fabric Live mix (as far fetched as it seems the similarities are uncanny). Anyways thats just to say for a guy who claims to live on the streets, Biscuit knows whats up....

As of late the records must be drying up, because Biscuit showed slanging children's books the other day.

Fat Lip and his boy Dave Yetti were hanging out at the store when he came by...

This is what they bought...

P1010454.jpg
This was a tape Lloyd and I made years ago... "The Neverending Party part 2," for which there was never a part 1. We recorded it on Modemmex's borrowed Tascam 4 track and mastered it live by bringing levels up and down manually. In order to record we would have to rewind and play with the headphones on, mixing live and being sure to not include the back-cuing in the final mix. There was a sheet of paper that looked like a treasure map with all the notes of how to mix both sides down.

P1010455.jpg
The only reason I know about new wave at all is because my older sister gave me all the tapes she made in college. Depeche Mode, Alphaville, Anything Box and Squeeze in the house!

P1010456.jpg
I don't know where I got this but there were only a handful of hiphop tapes I had because I basically forced myself to like hiphop, but this one definitely stays in the top somewhere... Let me pee on you!

P1010457.jpg
This is part 2 of my "They Might Be Giants Ultimate Mixtape" series.

P1010459.jpg
This is a tape a friend of mine made me in college. I used to swap tapes with people all the time to find out what other good music existed (the internet at the time was limited to email and porn), and hearing all this trip-hop and "realness hiphop" in '99 was basically what made me get into Mo Wax/Ninja Tune. Whither thou, Clifford Gilberto Rhythm Combination?

from the arsenal website:
Cesc Fabregas ranks his goal at Milan on Tuesday as one of the best moments of his career so far.

The 20-year-old, who is fast approaching 200 games for Arsenal, let fly from distance with five minutes left to give the visitors a vital lead in the Champions League Knockout Round second leg at the San Siro.

Although Emmanuel Adebayor added another at the death, it was that fabulous Fabregas goal - and the celebration that followed - which stick in the memory.

"It was one of the best moments of my career and I went straight to the boss because without him I would never have had the chance to play in a game like this," he said.

"Maybe I have not been at my best since my injury, but now I feel great once again. This performance has been very important for my confidence. After I had started the season so well and then had an injury, I was not playing the way I used to and I was a bit upset. I needed a performance like this.

"When you look back on your career, these are the nights you are going to remember.

"We have to be very proud of what we have done. We went over to our fans, and you could also see some of the Milan fans clapping. You could see they like this kind of football and that we played well.

"The Milan players all said: 'well done, we hope you win it now'. In Italy, they have a lot of respect."

tkat is going crazy in the office, re-organizing, re-arranging shelves, and forcing me go through all my old boxes throughout the office... god bless him. it got me thinking about the pack rat nature of djs... collecting all sorts of weird shit with weird intrinsic values... here's a peak at what i'm finding...

box #1 - old cassettes
petestapes-1.jpg
this is one of many boxes of cassettes i have laying around the office. all those grey ones? those are probably turntablist mixes i tried to make without a 4 track... i would start off with a solid 5 minutes of material, and inevitably things would go to shits... and i would just start with a new tape (just in case, the next one was the one!). the one never came...

petestapes-2.jpg
93 til infinity.... i bought this in 93... im freaking old. and that clear case? that's where i kept my favorite tapes...

petestapes-3.jpg
i spent a couple summers in seoul. they had this record shop in Intaewon (it's like the bootleg-GI district of Seoul). they had bootleg tapes of all the new wave stuff. they even made color covers from the originals. they had the tape duplicators running out in the open in the store. i bought a ton of good tapes there...

petestapes-4.jpg
in my opinion, reggae sounds best on tape... think i bought this one in San Diego with frogman... it has all the classic Studio One dubs...

petestapes-5.jpg
boy genius made me this one... it probably had a bunch of Green Day, Hootie, Dave Matthews, Weezer and Soundgarden, and Jock Jams... mtv was a powerful thing.

petestapes-6.jpg
this one is going straight into the lab Volvo...

petestapes-7.jpg
the inevitable Stretch + Bob tape... this one reads "Supernat"... that dude used to be huge amongst rap nerds... but looking back he was doing the equivalent of stupid human pet tricks.

petestapes-8.jpg
i used to love this band... Ride was like the second coming of My Bloody Valentine to me... every year i try to go back and listen to their stuff, but the heavily accented vocals make me want to barf...

petestapes-9.jpg
ladies and gentlemen, i present to you the CASSINGLE! this one even has the instrumental on the b-side... useless!

petestapes-10.jpg
here's a keeper. during the funk boom, the daptone guys had an incredible show on Columbia radio... they did this James Brown festival for days (?), bringing in original JB collaborators and playing the most incredible JB stuff. I think i recorded a couple tapes worth....

petestapes-11.jpg
i actually bought this one not too long ago at a store in Williamsburg... i thought it was cool to have on tape...

petestapes-12.jpg
probably one of the albums i anticipated the most... Nothing's Shocking was my teenage skater wheelhouse... this was sadly disappointing, especially the sell-out "Been Caught Stealing"... however, over the years, the entire b-side has matured into something magical... "Three Days, Classic Girl, Then She Did" ???

petestapes-13.jpg
this wasn't my shit or anything, it just goes to illustrate the bane of promo stuff... i don't know why it used to be so hard for me to throw promo shit out... i still have illstyle live lps, finley quaye 12"s, and other totally useless things... i am throwing this shit out as we speak....

more to come...

my first 1200
NICKODEMUS

what was your first turntable / setup?
2 Gemini Belt driven turntables & that weird stiff mixer with the 2 channels (with yellow meters) & the click in the middle on the crossfader.

at what point did you get your first technics turntable(s)?
About 1990

did you get the 1200(s) from a store? how did you get the money to pay for the 1200(s)?
I threw a few parties in recording studios & American Legion Halls until I had enough money. I bought them at Rock & Soul- they had the best prices & you could haggle a lot with them.

how did you feel when you got your first technics turntable(s)?
I felt like I finally had the secret weapon that allowed me to scratch & juggle beats like I've seen my favorite DJ's do.

what is your favorite feature or aspect of the technics turntable?
Their sturdiness! I still have my same pair & they're been on flights, buses, cars, backyards, beaches & clubs for about 18 years.

what was your first turntable / setup?
Two gemini's and a scratchmaster DUH!

at what point did you get your first technics turntable(s)?
Mad late, like after I had been djing for maybe 6 or 7 years. I could never afford them before that and was way more into blowing my money on records ironically.

did you get the 1200(s) from a store? how did you get the money to pay for the 1200(s)?
I worked at Bobbito's Footwork and when the store closed Bob let me have the store 1200's for like maybe 600 buck or something. By then I was already making pretty good money on the club circuit.

how did you feel when you got your first technics turntable(s)?
I don't really remember actually. By then I was way over practicing or trying to be good at scratching or anything like that.

what is your favorite feature or aspect of the technics turntable?
Um, I'm not sure I really understand what makes them so great besides the fact that you can use them for djing... They seem pretty sturdy though I suppose.

my first 1200
EGGFOO

what was your first turntable / setup?
Around 1992 I got heavily into writing, mainly due to my new "friend" Jason. Jason quickly went from stealing paint to stealing everything, and for $50 bucks could get you ANYTHING.
He got me one direct drive Technics BD-35 and one belt drive Sony. He threw in some busted up records like Doug E Fresh, Schooly D, and Captain Sky. I bought a Gemini Scratch Master from Sam Ash in White Plains, NY. The best thing was the 10 second loop/sampler in it and I learned how to make loops with that. Then in 1994 the turntables were stolen from our bands rehearsal room.

at what point did you get your first technics turntable(s)?
Basically from 1994 on all I wanted were 1200's. But I kept spending whatever bits of money I had on car stereo equipment or bikes. So finally in 1997 I became a camp counselor and saved up.

did you get the 1200(s) from a store? how did you get the money to pay for the 1200(s)?
I found an ad in the classifieds of the village voice. It said "Two 1200's for $650" I drove out to Long Island and met this reggae dj and the tables were pretty beat. Cigarette ashes and slightly bent tone arms. I gave him $600 and drove home the happiest kid.

how did you feel when you got your first technics turntable(s)?
It was like christmas everyday for a while.

what is your favorite feature or aspect of the technics turntable?
The dot pattern flowing like liquid, the pop up light, the feet, the rubber bottom, the way it looks like a silver and black spaceship.

what was your first turntable / setup?
2 belt drives, one was a technics 1800-something and it had a pitch knob, the other was some no name without pitch control. i can't remember what mixer it was, but was just 2 channels and no EQs. i used to practice like 4-5 hours a day on that set-up.

at what point did you get your first technics turntable(s)?
end of summer '93. I worked construction all summer framing development houses. the guys on the crew thought i was gay b/c i had those little silver hoop earrings in BOTH ears.

did you get the 1200(s) from a store? how did you get the money to pay for the 1200(s)?
I bought my first Technics 1200s set up used, at a pawn shop in North Philly. I went with an older skater friend of mine, and he talked the guy down to $550. They were European 1200s with a voltage converter on the plug. I also got this sick 4 channel Numark mixer with the deal, that had an 8 band EQ with volume faders. It was great for tweaking, but the fader was stuck like glue. That shit was like 2 feet wide and heavy.

how did you feel when you got your first technics turntable(s)?
so excited like i just shotgun'ed 8 Red Bulls.

what is your favorite feature or aspect of the technics turntable?
i used to trip out on the patterns the dots make on the platter. But definately the fact that they don't stop working, and never lose there value. I sold that same set up 5 years later to someone for $500, and they were psyched.

in my once every two years activity,
i went to go check out the museums by the park this wknd...
went to the Cooper Hewitt National Design museum (yes, things like this exist!)
and checked out the Campana Brothers exhibit. This brazilian design duo went through the Cooper Hewitt collection and picked their favorites, and I was quite amazed at what they came up with.

Any sucker with a couple design books can pick out some Swiss posters or cool German packaging, but these guys picked brilliant, unexpected stuff. the most inspiring were these plates by some french guy named Seguy. These plates are collectively titled "Insectes". The color and detail is incredible, but I really like how the insects are arranged within the rectangular frame.

i immediately went home to check if you can purchase these things, but doh, an incomplete set will run you close to 4gs
, but i'd say it's worth it...

what was your first turntable / setup?
It was a Pioneer belt drive from my parent's console system + a gemini scratchmaster + records from Music Now in NE, and Tower on the pike

at what point did you get your first technics turntable(s)?
it was about 1995, the day couldn't come any faster. I was gonna buy a pair of Linear Techs (worse than Gemini) from a college buddy, but i decided to wait for the real thing.

did you get the 1200(s) from a store? how did you get the money to pay for the 1200(s)?
my boy Shwan met a random dude at this club we used to go to called the Vault, next to Fifth Column in DC. Shwan's the type of guy who instantly becomes friends with anybody. He told Shwan that he could get Technics cheap from a warehouse in Virginia. We were all skeptical, but I gave Shwan a couple hundred bucks that I earned working for the Korean American Olympics, and he came back with 2 new 1200s and a copy of Cypress Hill's first album. One of the happiest days in my life.

how did you feel when you got your first technics turntable(s)?
The first couple nights i would go to bed, get up like 5 minutes later, turn on the lights, play with em, go back to bed, repeat... almost like when i first discovered masturbation...

definitely the start/play. i love the click of the on/off button, and how quickly and silently the motor gets up to speed.

COSMO BAKER

what was your first turntable / setup?
My first turntable setup was an old deck that I don't even remember what kind it was. It was one of those that had the mechanical arm where you could stack records on them and they dropped down. Shit was so jenky. It was that and some Panasonic straight arm turntable with no pitch. Absolutely terrible. Somehow I got my hands on a Technics SL-1300 so it was that and the Panasonic turntable and, with my trusty Radio Shack mixer I swore I was hot shit.

at what point did you get your first technics turntable(s)?
I got my first 1210 after about a year of working on that original setup. It sent my shit into overdrive.

did you get the 1200(s) from a store? how did you get the money to pay for the 1200(s)?
I bought both my turntables from the legendary Armand's Records. I got them about a year apart from each other, and it was after working mad hours in a grocery store cutting lunch meat for old people.

how did you feel when you got your first technics turntable(s)?
Like I was ready to go. Seriously it's like driving a Geo Metro for years and then getting behind the wheel of a Cadillac. Or better yet, a Sherman tank those things are built so fucking tough.

what is your favorite feature or aspect of the technics turntable?
The overall complete creative control. You can make the 1200 do anything you want it to do once you learn the ins and outs of it. That and the fact that it's so damn sturdy and reliable. I've had mine for over 15 years and I've only have had to get them serviced once, and it was for minor wire wear. It deserves the title of "Industry Standard."

I got a Japanese 1210 from Rock and Soul Electronics for around $500 probably. My roommate had a 1200 and we shared a setup so I didn't get my second 1200 until 1999. That one I brought from Turntable Lab's first "warehouse" (more like a closet), in Chinatown, from Jasper.

how did you feel when you got your first technics turntable(s)?
I was so stoked! It felt really substantial, heavy and shiny.

what is your favorite feature or aspect of the technics turntable?
I still have both of them, so my favorite thing is that they are solid as a rock.

snoop_rip_1.jpg
The most badass chick gangster ever.

Damn, what a sad sad sad season this is of The Wire... so awful, no sense of fulfillment. its like getting a blowjob from a girl whose head-game isnt up to par... so forced, terrible, almost godawful and painful at some points, and you just want the damn thing to be over and done with already. But I wouldnt know, cause I only fucks with the best. I am the Mayor, you know? Anyways... I know I'm not the only guy who has a secret crush on Snoop either.... dont lie, you would fuck her too.

You know what? I like Mike. I think he is a great guy, sorta feel bad for him, he is a great speaker and a genuine guy, plus he is sick at the bass guitar and he is hilarious. More conservatives should stand up for him. Note to Mike Huckabee tho...

huckster_2_small.jpg
Didn't you watch Chappelle Show? Black people dont like guitar... they respond to the drums.
