We've reached the 5th volume in our Money Lotion series for the working DJ. Maybe we can hit #10 by the end of 2008. Probably not though.

Also don't tell nobody but we repressed the Roctakon and DJ Eli volumes too.
400 copies each. They'll be up tomorrow.

Kid Cudi 12" on Fool's Gold coming rill soon.
I think I've listened to "Day N Nite" about 500 times.

Also coming up from la familia:

- Sol*Selectas EP 06 from our man Sabo
- Jokers of the Scene 12" on Fool's Gold
- heartsrevolution 12" from IHEARTCOMIX

Keeping it small but powerful...

i'm back from an extended west coast trip, accompanied by Boy Genius (fresh off campaigning for Obama in vegas)
it was an odd one...
went to check out the LA lab heads DJ at the Room (cool place!)
hit the tradeshow circuit (NAMM, agenda, asr), seeing Stevie Wonder at Namm was probably the highlight...
went boarding at mini-mountain Mt. High with LA manager Dave (some punk stole his board)
went to visit my cousin at UCSD (prolly the most boring school on earth, the west coast Carnegie Melon?)
went to a Korean-Catholic students meeting, held hands, sung hymns and almost lost my shit (actually did loose my shit)
got stoned and watched Cloverfield (terrible idea)
and finally,
we had our belated TTL LA X-Mas Dinner...

la2008-1.jpg
we went to an all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ. this place is mad... it's under a tent, holds a couple hundred people, and it's 17.99 a head...

la2008-2.jpg
when the meat first comes, you become a caveman and loose 75% of your brain functions...

la2008-3.jpg
west coast hipster alert! staccato aka gina + louisahhhh...

la2008-4.jpg
the new guard aka the ttl boy band... ben, jake, kyle, and boy genius (damn, we're starting to look the same)

la2008-5.jpg
the old guard... jemz gettin his eat-on and staring at the asian gangsters at the table next to us (boy genius: "should i give them a pound?" me: "no")

la2008-6.jpg
last but not least, holding it down: david "sleepy eyes" yoshitomi

also went to go check out my Hoyas play St. Johns at MSG...
it was probably the most pathetic Big East conference game I've ever seen...
check out the scoreboard...

Chicago's Sloppy White is now offering up his out-of-print mix CDs as mpfrees on his website sloppywhite.com. If you're a fan of heavy '80s and early '90s rap - Tuff Crew, Black Rock & Ron, Supreme Force, etc, this is kind of a no-brainer. These mixes have gotten rave reviews from folks like Monk One, The Ivory Brothers, Egon, and Turntable Lab.

Ok, you guys know I don't usually shill for stuff on the blog, but this is a good one. Harris Newman has a new album out (well, kinda new - September '07) and it's totally hitting the spot right now during these winter doldrums. Smoky folky acoustic guitar raga type stuff with hits of Fahey, Kottke and Jansch. Harris is an old amigo of mine from Montreal who does audio mastering, plays in a group called Triple Burner with Godspeed You! Black Emperor / Silver Mt. Zion members, and is usually riding a bike when I see him. Anyway, if you gotta save up your pennies for the whole album, you can still go over to Harris' MySpace and download my favorite track, "Anamnesis," for FREE.

Totally unrelated: our dance music queen, Ms. Alison Tara, is spinning this Sunday in TOKYO (!) so go out and show her some love. Here are details:

Indeed, you did post that Cory clip a day before me. I guess I need to change my home page back to the Lab Blog...

Regarding the flyer thing; I pulled up some of the old parties we collaborated on, and come to find out, I have, in fact been trying to hold your DJ career down. I think, subliminally, it's my jealous feelings towards your late night Hollywood lifestyle... and for that, I truly apologize.

Netherlands is cool. It's quaint with windmills, cheese, clogs, Amsterdam(the land of dro & hoes), the world's most insane disco collectors and... DJ School! First off, I believe this is a mixing school, (that doesn't look like a scratch mixer to me). Almost half the student roster are women and it's actually next to a DJ Hotel where each room is accomodated with a DJ setup. Coming from dirt-ass Brooklyn, this just seems unreal.

MIKE 2600
- goes back with the lab all the way to the day of spray-painted cassette tapes
- spends a lot of time in illustrator
- probably likes asian girls

favorite 3 tracks to play out (or you like to hear out)
1. DJ Day "Outro" from the "Got to Get it Right" EP
2. U-Tern's remix of Stevie Wonder "All I Do"
3. Gang of Four "Call Me Up"

favorite 3 non-dj albums you listened to most this year
1. Patton Oswalt "Werewolves and Lollipops"
2. Converge "No Heroes"
3. Does anyone listen to albums anymore or just ringtones?

what you like or hate about djing in 2007?
the rising fashionability of DJing has made it easier to get good gigs and to get people to come to them, but it's also made it easier for every cornball with more than 10 mp3s to get a DJ gig, making it harder for every Becky and Chad to tell who's actually a good DJ and who just happens to have 10 bitchin' mp3s.

favorite place to dj (or hear djs) in 2007?
Best gig of the year by a landslide was the last Saturday night of SXSW at Silhouette sushi restaurant. Me + The Rub DJing + complete drunken mayhem on the sidewalk out front featuring Morse Code trying to grab random passer-by asses + Ayres running around shoeless + DJ King Most and Ayres cake fight + Cosmo's JVC Force rappin'.

2. Cinnematic Orchestra 'Home'
3. The Dynamics ‘Version Excursions’

what you like or hate about djing in 2007?
Like: being able to play whatever the fuck I want.
Hate: dj culture in general. dj’s as celebrities is pathetic. just because your photo appeared on cobrasnake, you aren’t that cool. At the end of the day, you’re just a dj playing someone else’s music so get over yourself. And oh yeah, this can also be applied to photographers who are the new dj’s (be on the lookout for this tee). Why does every party now have 4 photographers snapping away for their blogs?

favorite place to dj (or hear djs) in 2007?
The Do-Over. No egos. No Hollywood hipster bullshit. No cover charge. Just good music w/ even better dj’s.

favorite lab personality of 2007?
Wow. So many to choose from, but I have a guilty pleasure for What Is Tony Wearing.

your favorite tv shows, books and / or movies of the year?
Book: Kevin Lyons 'Pussy and Papers Poetry Power and Pistols'

I’m partial to the east side of LA: Ye Ole Rustic (best wings in LA). Malos (burnt habanero salsa, say what!?). Blairs & Aroma (best food in LA. Take your girl).

your favorite youtube clip of the year?

your favorite thing that you bought this year?
A trip to Mexico. Remote Beach Town + Jungle = Paradise. peep the video

what did you learn as a human this year?
Our country is full of incompetent leaders & role models. People that are in a position to influence change are too selfish and too scared to stand up for what is right which makes them no better off than good ole GW.

favorite moment of 2007?
Golden Girls was picked up for it’s 29th Season!

THE SAGA CONTINUES…

aokivsparrot.jpg

The Parrot/Aoki beef has gotten so real that the LA TIMES is now reporting on it.

I hope I’m not coming off as showing ill will towards Aoki by spreading this story, because to be honest he’s a really nice guy. I just think the ARAB PARROT’S comedy style is so genius I want to do as much as possible to blow him up (to be fair Aoki’s retorts in the article were also amusing).

The thing we can all learn from this battle royal is to stop taking our selves so damn serious in ‘08 (a crime neither of these two are guilty of). I mean even JUSTICE admitted they take most of their inspiration from SPINAL TAP, so why can’t you? This is coming from the guy who has people come up to him in clubs and give him hi-5’s while saying “Go Lohan!” I don't care, I just role with it.

Who's to blame for all this seriousness?

no_serato.gif
(good looks HAYCOCK on the anti-Serato design, even though you bought Serato and took my entire hard drive after mocking me for a year straight at every gig I played)

In other news I’ll be playing at this CHROMEO afterparty on Friday at Cinespace. $20 and it goes till 4am!

chromeoflyer.JPG
(yo promo company nice job not posting the flyer anywhere on the web (I took this shot with the my gayPhone) aaaaaaand spelling my name wrong)

I get hyped every time these guy’s come thru cause it means I get a chance to hang with…

COSMO BAKER
- everyone's favorite DJ
- lab dog emma's worst enemy
- mysterious ethnic origins like blu jemz

favorite 3 tracks to play out (or you like to hear out)
my favorite trance songs to hear at a wedding:
1. John Paul Young "Love Is In The Air" - This was my theme song for WMC this year and it's now taken on a life of it's own, complete with a choreographed dance that goes along with it.
2. James Brown "There Was A Time" - When you heard this out, it's probably because I was singing it on stage. This shit got really REAL for me this year. James Brown lives forever.
3. Jay-Z "Roc Boys (And The Winner Is...)" - No question about this shit right here. Make me want to fight people, and then light all my money on fire in honor of my victory. La Chaim!

favorite 3 non-dj albums you listened to most this year
1. Akron/Family "Ed Is A Portal" - This shit makes me want to get on my gay/black/hippy/jesus shit and really put that shit into full swing for the '08. It's going DOWN.
Pixies "Dig For Fire" - I missed most rock & roll in the 80s and 90s but the Pixies were always on it for me. My big sister is due the credit for introducing me to them and I've always been grateful
3. Gil Scott-Heron "Your Daddy Loves You" - A lot of my friends have kids now and it's getting to that point in my life that I'm looking at that. Grown man shit is definitely everything it's cracked up to be.

what you like or hate about djing in 2007?
I love making mad paper for do what I love to do - playing music for people. I hate jet lag and being away from Brooklyn. Also I fucking hate going places and people expect you to be dropping whatever corny ass shit just got posted on whatever random blog or the Hollerboard that week. Fuck you, listen to this goddamn Peedi Crakk and shut your mouth.

favorite place to dj (or hear djs) in 2007?
As for playing in clubs, I'll leave it with strictly New York and say Southpaw, Love, Cielo and downstair at Apt. As for hearing DJs, as long as the system is good and the DJ is someone I like it could be anywhere. Also, I do love playing in Canada. That's the Land Of Milk And Honey.

favorite lab personality of 2007?
Tony's dog, Emma. She LOVES me.

your favorite tv shows, books and / or movies of the year?
For TV: "The First 48, The Wire, The Sopranos, Meet The Press, The McLaughlin Group, Closing Bell, Iron Chef

your favorite places to eat this year?
Smitty's in Lockhart, Texas.

your favorite youtube clip of the year?
sorry, removed...

your favorite thing that you bought this year?
Toss up between an East of Underground original pressing and a honeymoon.

your favorite tang of the year?
My favorite Tang would be Tang of Shang, the first ruling king of the Shang dynasty in Chinese history who ruled from 1675 - 1649 BCE. He was a pretty good dude.

what did you learn as a human this year?
I don't know if I've learned anything that's particularly profound this year that I didn't already know before, but for one thing I've definitely witnessed firsthand is that all the success in the world really means nothing if you don't have your family and friends to share it with.

favorite moment of 2007?
Getting married this past May. Nothing even comes close.

IT IS SO ON IN '08...

I've put up links to my man ARAB PARROT's site before, but he has taken it so next level that I had to let you know (read the whole post).

IT'S OK TO HATE IN '08!!!

You know what's getting out of hand? Niggas taking pictures at parties to post on the internet. Believe it or not there was a time when if you missed the party, you missed the fuckin party. What happened to the mystery of night life? I mean some pics are cool, but after a while just stop. I feel like the more photos the worse the party. Who has time to take photos when you're partying? I don't even take my camera out with me anymore because I know I'll just loose that shit.

*Of course if your using the photo's to score pussy, play on playboy/girl.

That being said my man Tony did post some crazer photos from my b-day last week, but that's it... I swear! Look out for Pocket Checkers #3 February 7th!!! Always more dangerous than the last...

In the meantime Los Angeles we've started a new Sunday Night Disco Party and last night was some of the most fun I've had since I moved to LA. The whole room was literally dancing from 10-2!!!

So Ill we needed two flyers...

Wish I was back in NY for this tho...

Hibbert dials long distance from the Verizon Center!!!
hibbert_shot.jpg

First of all, I made that caption up, bitches call me Boy Genius for a reason, bitches. This shot had me screamin' "WHOOOOOW!!!!" like i was The Nature Boy Ric Flair! My man, Roy Hibbert, showing that all those hours spent shooting from behind the arc at Georgetown Prep (Bethesda, MD) paid off... Damn I can't wait to be in this man's entourage when he jumps to the Association. UConn, eat a dick, HOYAS are comin for you tonite Pitt!!!!

Man, what a weekend ... Hibbert's trey, Celtics losing their 5th game to my Bullets, Tony Romo's annual playoff collapse, this one to my now-favorite-to-win New York Football Giants (Not throwing the ball away while trying to avoid the rush + throwing away the ball to nobody in an empty pocket + TO crying + Romo doing the Steve Spurrier-esque lowered head shake = priceless), not to mention Terminator: Sarah Connors Chronicles, and the 2nd episode of The Wire. Also, note to grown men out there, dont see that movie "The Orphanage," that scary shit had me coming out of the theater pissed, sayin' out loud "shieeet... I'm a grown-ass man!! had me all tense and shook like a little kid, man, fuck this shit!!"

From CNN:

(CNN) – Former 2004 presidential hopeful Sen. John Kerry will endorse Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination, two sources told CNN Thursday... "(Kerry) remains one of the most popular figures in the Democratic Party and (has) an e-mail list with millions of addresses," an Obama source said.

WOW BECAUSE:

1. Take that John Edwards! That's some cold-blooded shit. "Sorry, my choice for Vice President... I kind of don't think you'd do a good job. I'm backing a winning horse. I'm behind Hidalgo over here."

2. What a windfall for the Obama camp that they now can add that precious, precious email list to their arsenal. I know that every time I get a mass email that tells me to vote for someone for president I do it blindly without thinking. I love how we live in a time when having a bunch of emails or myspace friends translates as being popular. All that remains now is Kerry getting an MTV reality show, "A Shot of Love with the Merry John Kerry" perhaps?

AZIZ ANSARI
- part of Human Giant comedy crew
- was once on MTV for 24 hours straight
- this still makes me laugh
- once interviewed for a job at the lab (we nixed him, but look at him now! thanks ttlab!)

favorite 3 tracks to play out (or you like to hear out)
1. LCD Soundsystem - "Time to Get Away"
2. Justice - "Genesis"
3. Timbaland - "Give It To Me"

favorite 3 non-dj albums you listened to most this year
Cliched Best of '07 material, but I'll be honest:
1. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
2. Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil
3. Radiohead - In Rainbows

what you like or hate about djing in 2007?
Hate - Hearing remixes/mashups, when I'd rather just rock out to the original.

favorite place to dj (or hear djs) in 2007?
NY, what am I gonna say? LA? Please.

favorite lab personality of 2007?
Jasper, Pete. I'm talking core old school.

your favorite tv shows, books and / or movies of the year?
South Park - Imaginationland
- South Park is unstoppable. This trilogy of episodes made me laugh harder than almost anything this year. "Get out of their Kurt Russell!!!"

Kid Nation
- Shit on reality TV all you want, but Kid Nation was fucking awesome. Watching that little kid who missed his girlfriend drowning his sorrows in root beer at the Bonanza Saloon would bring even those with the coldest of hearts to tears. And Jared sneaking into the Bonanza City arcade to play Dance Dance Revolution may be the greatest minute of television ever.

Lost
- Even the most fervent "Lost" fans had to admit that the latest season had some serious patches of shit, but my goodness was the last leg of the season incredible. I hope the writer's strike doesn't fuck up their new season too much, they went out on what was quite possibly the coolest Season Finale ever. I'd cut my dick off to watch Season 4 right now.

Friday Night Lights - Season 1
- Patton Oswalt repeatedly told me to watch this show, claiming it was almost "Wire"-esque. After watching the first season, I have to agree. If I buy a Toyota, it'll be from Buddy Garrity.

King of Kong
- One of the coolest documentaries I've ever seen. Seriously, get this thing asap, within 5 minutes you are absolutely riveted by the ridiculous rivalry between Donkey Kong enthusiasts Steve Wiebe (good) and Billy Mitchel (evil). I met Steve Wiebe at the premiere in LA and asked him to write "Fuck Billy Mitchell" on my King of Kong poster, and he didn't want to, he really is that nice!

Foot Fist Way
- Kun-ye! This was another Patton forced viewing, and once again Mr. Oswalt did not let me down. This is hard to get a hold of, but try your best. Its a film that Will Ferrell and Adam McKay bought a while back and it should be released in theatres next year. The guys that made it, Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and Ben Best, are super hilarious, I can't wait for their HBO show that should be out in 2008, not to mention McBride tearing it up in a bajillion movies.

And of course - Superbad, There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men.

BOOKS
Into Thin Air by Jon Kraukaer
Born Standing Up by Steve Martin
