Lets continue on with the football theme of the week...

I don't know about you, but I love interesting interpretations of penalties in football given by referees. Here is an example of one of the best ones ever, given the other day during a Maryland + NC State football game.

Heres the play and interpretation by ACC referee Ron Cherry:

Now I did more research on this, and it is an ode to Ben Dreith, an NFL referee from the '70's + '80's. During a '86 game btw the Jets and the Bills, a Jets player tackled Bills quarterback Jim Kelly, and then proceeded to punch him in the head several times. Ben Dreith's explanation was this....

We have a personal foul, on number 99 of the defense, after he tackled the quarterback, he's giving him the business down there, that's a 15-yard penalty.

I love wikipedia + youtube.
(people are sick of youtube postings on this blog with no commentary, thats why i have legions of fans from Milan to Maryland my fellow lazy bloggers)

I think I have unofficially become the Lab's Sports blogger. No problem, considering the legions of fans I have around the world will read every word I write no matter the content. Anyways, digging myself out of the depression of Sean Taylor passing, I stumbled upon another tragic football story, this one more relating to washed-up people (kids of the 80's), not young and sexy people like me (K.C. & Jo-Jo-era kids)... read the article, even if you dont know Bo, I know you used him in Techmo Bowl (which they also talk about in the article).

Sean Taylor
1983-2007

staylor_1.jpg

When I woke up this morning and heard the news of his passing, I immediately burst into tears. Tears of sadness, tears of anger. I too was born in '83, but I dont have an 18 month old daughter like him, nor am i engaged like him. He was murdered in his own home with his family present. Guy was only 24 years old, didn't even reach his peak in potential. Sean would have become the best safety, and perhaps the best defender in league history, I kid you not, easily the most feared person in the league (ask T.O.). Sean Taylor will forever be remembered. I wear my #21 jersey proud today, and every Sunday from now on....

For my record check I'm putting up tracks that I've been into the past few weeks... no classics or miracle dollar bin tracks here, for that you can bug Pete to repost my old record check from like 5 years ago, replete with such records like "From the Choirgirl Hotel" and Shantel's "Higher Than The Funk" LP.

sigue.jpeg
"Eno import. Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Break beats. Serge Gainsbourg. Ryuchi Sakamoto, what are you guys stealing for other people now?"

lcd.jpeg
My friend saw James Murphy at this bar called Snitch, and he was hanging out with sandals on. That alone makes him the best guy ever.

busta.jpeg
I think the first hip-hop song I ever heard stoned (and thus blew my mind to smithereens) was either this or Canibus' "2nd Round KO".

paul mcc.jpg
Temporary Secretary = the most insane Paul McCartney song ever.

scholar.jpg
Kyle from the NY Lab store used to play the "Music Scholar" track from this album a lot, and after awhile we started quoting it liberally.

-Oh, the Burrito Brothers couldn't sing or play?

-Aaaah you know... the quality of the recordings were so weak.

escapade.jpeg
This is my favorite Janet Jackson song. It's so uplifting! It reminds me of Prince's "Take Me With U" in terms of having that breezy feeling. The dub mix is insano.

rb drunkie.jpeg
This was a Lab record that Lloyd turned me onto. When he was crashing on my couch I realized that Lloyd spends 21 hours a day on the internets. Even when he's asleep there's like Rob Zombie's "Halloween" streaming on his Mac.

neworder.jpeg
Another competitor for best New Order song ever.

Every time I'm at 205 I hear this.

I was joking around with someone that there needs to be a house music karaoke night. Then you can stand in front of a giant screen with a mic saying "can you feeeel it! can you feeeeeel it! for 5 minutes. If there was, I would sing the shit out of this song.

In true ripping off Ayres fashion, I made a mix with these records on them, plus more. You can listen/download it here.

Bonus stuff.

back in '03 i went to my then roommate jack's shows (performing with his brother as Jeff and Jack Lewis Band) . after the shows he would very subtly point out that indie heros like kimya dawson or david herman dune or chris glover were in the audience. he was like check it out, chris glover got signed to interscope, his albums gonna drop big in the '04. so listened and was like "this could actually be huge" - it had elements of johnny cash, kid rock, and throw in a splash of dashboard confesh for good measure. so we would guess how many units it would sell. i said i wouldn't be suprised if it went gold... so we waited for it to drop, and waited....
Did Interscope shelve the chris glover album?

Ffwd to this past month and the first thing people say when they walk in the store is "do you have the holy ghost! 12 inch???" And I reply "oh yeah the blue one that looks like a mets logo that has vocals and guitar by chris glover?" they're like "yeah" and i say "SOLD OUT!"

NEW LAB LA RADIO…

I wasn’t really feeling my gayass, happy Disco House set, so luckily these guys came thru.

IN FLAGRANTI

sasa.jpg

This was the first time for me to fly out a guest I had previously never met to do a party. I thought it was gonna be the ultimate headache, but instead Sasa from In Flagranti turned out to be the coolest dude i’ve met for a while now. He completely lived up to that ‘cool European dude, hanging with the ladies and partying to great music till dawn’ image I had of him.

His set on the show was full of unreleased Disco magic as well as their own edits and songs from friends. What really struck me tho was that this is the first guy I’ve met in a really long time that reminded me that ‘hey this music shit isn’t just here for us to profit off of and bastardize as much as possible.’ Oh right. This is art and these other people are vultures for not treating it as such. The thing is when he says it, it doesn’t sound all negative like me, mad cool motherfucker.

PUBE$

pubex.JPG
Before I moved out here we had a list of the worst DJ names on the wall back at the Lab warehouse & Pube$ was definitely up there in the top 5. However when you meet the guy you just can’t hate on him, the name just fits. I Don’t know if it’s our shared Czech background, but this guy instantly became like my brother out here.

His weekly party Dance Right is the only party I try and get my friends spots at when they visit, his taste and timing are impeccable and most importantly he don’t give a fuck about any of this shit cause he was in a Pepsi commercial back in the day and he has a cool 9-5. Can’t say enough good things about him. Check his PUBELOG.

Also I forgot to ask during his interview about the origin of his name. It’s cause he was the only kid in some rock band growing up back in Jersey and when he’d throw his drum sticks in the air all the other dudes would say something like “look at little Puberty go(referencing his underarm sprouts).” Oh yeah his set was dope, kind of Rockish.

Some vinyl picks (in no particular order) from my humble crates. It was tough picking favorites since I still go digging whenever I have the time and constantly find new faves, but these are some records I've accumulated through the years that I'd never let go of. Some old, some new, some rare, some not so rare - most found for $2 or less and all my jams.

pablo.jpg
??? - "Pablo" 12" (White, 198?)

My roommate gets dollar bin records for free at Academy (he works there and apparently they have a basement full of'em) and sometimes he snatches some for me. That's how I came up on this little joint. I have no idea who this is, but it has the illest bounce, complete with vocoder vocals singing "Do it to me baby, Do it to meeeee..." It sounds like an Arthur Baker production, early 80's for sure. One of my fave white label mystery 12"s and a stunner for my popping and locking homies out in Cali. (UPDATE: C'mish found this last weekend - it's Vernon Burch - "Do It To Me Baby" - D'oh!)

muhammedrafi.jpg
Mohammed Rafi - Jaan Pehechan Ho Pic Disc 7" (Rambling Records Japan, 2001)

Bought this 7" for 5 bucks over at APE-CON in SF some years back. APE-CON (Alternative Press Expo) is a great place to find weird comics and scope nerdy-art girls, but I wouldn't recommend going there to find records. I think the only reason they had this was because it was tied into the whole "Ghost World" movie release and has the awesome Daniel Clowes illustration on the disc. "Jaan Pehechan Ho" is one of my favorite Bollywood jams, originally from the 1965 movie "Gumnaam." I don't know if this is super rare or anything, but it's not on discogs or ebay (probably bootleg). Oh and if you didn't know, Mohammed Rafi is the man.

davidastri.jpg
David Astri - Do It Right LP (Award Records, 1983)

This would have to be my "dollar bin miracle." I didn't know it when I pulled it out of the dirty landfill known as "The Thing" in Greenpoint, but when C'mish looked it up on ebay it was fetching $120+. Yes, David Astri with cheesy as all hell cover (looks like a beginners guide to MIDI or something) pressed up on crystal clear vinyl, and contains the sought after track "Dancing Digits." Sounds like something that inspired Metro Area or some of those new disco maestros. Still minty except for all the BPM sticky notes on the cover and the "Black Passion Disco" stamp on the label left from the original owner.

slyck-bush.jpg
Slyck - Love it Or (Beat The Bush) (Solid Platinum, 1981)

I'm a sucker for thick elastic bass, squiggle synths, and tight disco drums. This thing has all of three in abundance and is just plain nasty. Not only that, it has a Werewolf howl at every breakdown ensuring freaky dance madness every time (and it doesn't even have to be Halloween)! The intro break alone could be released as an edit with the one-of-a-kind filtered slap bass (haven't heard anything like it) but when the the whole composition comes together (after the Werewolf howl) its a wrap.

edrushoptical-wormhole.jpg
Ed Rush & Optical - Wormhole 5X12" (Virus, 1998)

Back in college, I spent all my money on import DnB 12"s and break records (and trees). I started off buying ragga jungle stuff, but this was the type of shit that got me straight up addicted. I was going to 3-D animation school at the time, so all the twisted, teched-out wobbly sounds were a perfect match to the endles hours I spent in front of MAYA pulling at control vertices in the virtual world. Ed Rush and Optical were my fave DnB producers and were responsible for the whole neuro-funk DnB sound (and spawning a shit-ton of bad imitators). This album banged from beginning to end - all 5 12"s were my shit and always got a place in my crate when I played at parties n raves in Oakland.

ginosoccio-facetoface.jpg
Gino Soccio - Face To Face (Atlantic, 1982)

It's completely satisfying when you dig up a whole LP that you can play from beginning to end without having to skip tracks or edit out the cheesy or bad parts. This record may not be so rare or fetch the most dough, but it's a rock solid LP and one of my treasured disco LPs. Gino Soccio was on top of his funked-out italo game in '82 with "Face To Face". The album is worth it for "It's Alright" alone, but you can seriously groove to all of the tracks on here. Bonus points for sharing its name with my favorite Daft Punk jam and the artwork is future fresh with the red aboriginal guy, sine waves and grid patterns.

e-40-sprinkle.jpg
E-40 - Sprinkle Me 12" (Jive/Sick Wid It, 1995)

E-40 has been the Bay's rap ambassador and slang innovator for years before hyphy and "Tell Me When To Go." Growing up in the East Bay, I remember being in 6th grade and freaking out over the "Mirror In My Pocket" video on The Box. That shit blew my mind as a kid - then he kept stunnin' me throughout the years with hits like "Captain Save A Ho," "Hurricane (with the Click)," "Player's Ball," and of course "Sprinkle Me" with his sister Suga T. "Sprinkle Me" = feel good rap jam. Most of ya'll prolly even know the words. Ironically I never saw this record when I lived out in Cali, but found it at the thrift store here in Brooklyn. It was sealed too, ya smell me?

funkmasterozone-wcpioneer.jpg
Funkmaster Ozone - West Coast Pioneers EP (Da Source Germany, 2007)

Electric boogaloo shit from... Cologne, Germany? Coulda fooled me! THE MEANEST talkbox shit right here, definitely Troutman disciple numero uno. It's like P-Thug from Chromeo but harder. I had to order this direct from Deutschland (shipping was a bitch!) but it was worth every penny.

latyrx-muzappers.jpg
Latyrx - Muzappers Mixes EP (Solesides, 1997)

Man when this came out I couldn't play it enough. Shadow on the throwback electrofunk beat with Lyrics Born's whisky slur delivery and Lateef's lyrical flips is still fresh. Seriously, best raps about a girl ever. "The little children wanna jump in your lap, girl I wanna do that myself..." Ha! I played this so much, my copy sounds like crap - there's even a small cigarette ash melt on the vinyl (but I still played it out). This is the original clear orange vinyl pressing with Brent Rollins on the fly sleeve design purchased from Rasputin's in San Lorenzo (RIP).

tonycook-onthefloor.jpg
Tony Cook & The Party People - On The Floor (Rock It) 12" (Half Moon, 1984)

This song always gets me. I knew about this track for awhile through an old b-boy video (it was a clip of K-Mel from Boogie Brats) and the blue label version, but never the "Special DJ Master Mix" (only on the white label) which I first heard Super Fam play some months ago. When I heard that mix it blew my mind and had to find it. I love how they extend the shit out of it and it has more of a free garage house vibe than the b-boy version.

and thats all from me. maybe i'll throw some of these on the next lab radio...

It's great to have tons of record knowledge at your fingertips on the internet, but I sort of miss the "dark ages" when we had to learn about records from other DJs, make lists and seek them out at the flea markets and used stores. For me it was never about rarity, just having all the music I wanted to play, although the reward was a lot greater when you found something that had been on your list for years. I think the slowness of that process made DJs spend more time with the records they were playing and I definitely see a big shift lately. DJs want to have everything right now, and for free. So here are some gems that I bought back then and I still play now.

I've also made a mix with them - download from Divshare or Zshare.

The order of the records below corresponds to the order I played them in.

Raydio - More Than One Way to Love A Woman

When I first moved to New York I got a job spinning on Thursday nights at Il Bagato, a little Italian restaurant on the Lower East Side that a bunch of good folks DJed at - Bobbito, DJ Eli, Lord Sear, Queen Majesty, Nick Chacona and more. Club bangers weren't appropriate at all, and it was fun playing all the old records we'd bought throughout the week: soul, latin, house, reggae, etc. Nick put me up on this one, and it became an Il Bagato staple. Raydio was Ray Parker, Jr's project before he blew up off of Ghostbusters, and "More Than One Way to Love A Woman" is a disco R&B gem that encourages lovers to try out all the positions of the Zodiac signs. I'm with that!

The Jones Girls - Nights Over Egypt

My first residency in Manhattan was at this dive bar a few blocks south of Il Bagato, called Ludlow Bar. Shout out to John B from Rocafella for hooking that up! I had Fridays or Saturdays, I can't remember, and DJ Qool Marv spun on I think Mondays or Tuesdays there for years. If you ever get a chance to see Marv play, don't pass it up, he's sick! He would play "Nights Over Egypt" a lot, and that's how I knew to look for it. Dexter Wansel of MFSB (more on them below) produced this one and it has that smooth Philly sound. Last year there was a great Faith Evans record with this beat, called "I Don't Need It."

Change - The Glow of Love

Damn I'm kind of stuck on late seventies / early eighties disco right now. I think I first heard Darshan Jesrani play this one at a house party we were doing sometime just after college, and I came across the album at a flea market pretty soon after that. It's a pretty common record. Luther Vandross was the lead singer of Change before he went solo, and he just murders it on "Glow of Love." Janet Jackson sampled this one on "All For You."

Rufus and Chaka - Any Love

Wow, this one is such a staple for me. I'm not sure where I first heard it, but I definitely remember Brendan Bring'Em playing it at Soul Travellers in Philly and being inspired to pull it back out. Produced by Quincy around the same time as "Off The Wall," it's just a rock solid hands-in-the-air disco classic. AND it has a good break on it. There's a reissue of the 12" with "I Love You, I Live You" on the B-Side, another great dance tune.

Machine - There But for the Grace of God Go I

I used to hear this all the time in old school house sets and on Kiss FM but I didn't know what it was until Benny B (ABB) put it on a classics mix CD. Discogs says, "Machine was a studio disco group formed by August Darnell, previously of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and, later in the 1980's, Kid Creole And The Coconuts." The lyrics on "The But For the Grace of God Go I" (get up on your 15th century religous martyrs) give a cautionary tale about a rebellious kid in a strict family.

MFSB - Love is the Message (Tee Scott mix)

Back to MFSB (Mother Father Sister Brother), this is my absolute favorite disco record of all time. Written by Gamble and Huff, this one has been sampled on a million and one house records but the original still outshines them all. I like this edit, it gets into the most familiar section of the record quicker and stays there longer. In Brooklyn, "Love is the Message" is a thug record, and you hear it bumping out of old heads' trucks all day long in Fort Greene and Bed Stuy.

The Underground Solution - Luv Dancin

Sampling Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face," "Luv Dancin" was an early hit for Roger Sanchez on Strictly Rhythm. So smooth! I don't remember where I found a test pressing but I had to floss it on my record check.

Vin Zee - Funky Bebop

I stumbled across "Funky Bebop" at the Chelsea flea market and it caught my eye because it is on the same label as Kano's "I'm Ready." I don't know a lot about the record but it sounds like a west coast joint, with its vocoders and huge bassline. Since Serato took over, I sold the bulk of my collection, but I saved probably around one or two thousand records, some because they weren't valuable in the condition they were in, and some because I couldn't bear to let certain things go. This falls in the latter category. When I'm in the storage space I sometimes daydream about a doomsday scenario that totally wipes out Serato and only the DJs with records are able to continue on. When that happens I'll be prepared!

Sugar Bear - Don't Scandalise Mine

A fast-rap classic, "Don't Scandalise Mine" is built off of a loop from Talking Heads "Once in A Lifetime" and a James Brown breakbeat - how could you go wrong? I didn't live in New York when this came out but heads who did will bug out when they hear it in a club. This pressing is a 45 from England with a picture cover - I can't resist rap records on 45. Cosmo and I put this on Hip-House 1, and I still run it at parties from time to time.

The Black Dog - Age of Slack

When I lived in Williamsburg there was a record dealer upstairs in my building who would open up the front room of his apartment on the weekends and sell records. He was playing this old techno record one day and I had to have it. It's a bootleg with no information on it so it took me a while to find out that the "Black Dog" is the artist, not the name of the song. They did a handful of stuff on WARP records and Clear (hi Claire!) and two of them also went on to form Plaid. I put this one on Hip-House 1 and on The Rave, it's a perennial favorite.

OK that's it, don't forget to download the mix and as always check out djayres.com for tour dates and releases.

We're nihilists, we believe in nothing! It's day 2 on The Rub tour and so far I've only lost the following shit: 1) new 10 Deep hat that isn't out yet and doesn't make me look retarded. 2) my house keys. 3) my hotel room key. My 404 sampler also shit the bed and won't make any sound. Ask Joe and Cosmo, that's actually not bad compared to the usual, I haven't lost my phone or broken my laptop yet. And we got 36 holes of putt putt in today. Yeaahhh! Check the dates and come holler at us if we're in your town. If not, listen to our weekly one hour Rub Radio show on BrooklynRadio.net and our monthly three hour show on Scion Broadband. Record check and exclusive mix for Turntable Lab coming early next week!

How I remember things like "orff" and "autoharp" ...

30 years of not smoking pot or drinking has left me with an overstock of brain cells to waste on things like remembering names of musical instruments and friends' phone numbers from 20 years ago. (615) 646-3511 was my best friend who lived across the street but they moved to Tucson. We had a BMX gang and set M.U.S.C.L.E. figures on fire.

this post serves multiple purposes,
first to remind you that dj eli's highly anticipated volume of Money Lotion is coming out in the next 2 weeks:

djeli-moneylotion.jpg

also i figured it would be cool to get inside the head of this guy while resurrecting Record Check from the original-original Lab site...

recordcheck-logo.jpg

so here's the first one, look out I may go post some old school ones too, if you ever want to reference these, i'm going to put a link to them on the side bar. enjoy...

ps. if you want to do one, hit me up.

and now to eli...

Peter asked me to pick my ten favorite 12's but lets' face it, that is an unimaginable task. So here are ten records I love although I doubt one of them would make it in to my top ten...

voices-inside-my-head.jpg
1) Police - Voices Inside My Head/When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What's Still Around
As luck would have it, the Police put their two most danceable songs on one juicy promo 12. I've come across this record twice in my life... both times at rock record stores and both times for under 5 dollars! Basically, before Serato, you needed this record cause both songs sound like ass on the album.

breaking-bells.jpg
2) T LA Rock - Breaking Bells
Mantronix is an immeasurable influence on my own music and this is maybe my favorite beat they ever made. T La Rock kills it too... but yo, peep the dub. It's insane.

rocker.jpg
3) Alter Ego - Rocker
I bought this record at Satellite back in 2004 I think. Now seeing how blog-house is all the rage, it seems obvious this record was a little ahead of its time. I really like the Eric Prydz remix. Apparently that dude can do more than just loop up Steve Windwood.

keep-feeling-fascination.jpg
4) Human League - Keep Feeling Fascination
Oh man, I remember seeing the video for this when I was a kid and being blown away by the SOUND of it ironically. The synths all loud and distorted in the mix and the hard ass drums... this is synth pop perfection. The 12 inch remix is where it's at for sure.

god's-child.jpg
5) Big Bang Theory - God's Child
This release on Defected from 2002 has the BBT Club Mix which is a loop from the song "Just As Long As I Got You" by disco group Law and Order with a preacher over it saying how he is God's child. In other words, it rules.

emotional-disguise.jpg
6) Peter Godwin - Emotional Disguise
This is just a great track by some New Wave guy who unknowingly created a proto Techno classic. I've never heard the vocal version before... I assume it blows. DJ Technics sampled it for "Who's In The House (NY Mix)" which I play almost every night.

that's-how-it-is.jpg
7) Casual - That's How It Is
The remix on this 12 is just unreal... I heard the original like once or twice and have since removed the memory completely. Sly Stone drums hitting crazy and some evil sounding bass loop is all it takes to completely reinvent an average song and make it a classic.

anambra.jpg
8) Ozo - Anambra
So for a while I was completely obsessed with David Mancuso and finding every record that he used to play at the Loft. When I found this one I thought it was a little weird but now it's an all time fave. Real slow and hypnotizing disco record.

you-can't-run-from-my-love.jpg
9) Stephanie Mills - You Can't Run From My Love
Stephanie has such an amazing distinctive voice and Mtume's production is so lush. This promo only remix gets real crazy in the middle though. Lots of dubbed out vocals and percussion. Right up my alley.

hot-flashes.jpg
10) 33 Hz - Hot Flashes
This is just a great new disco track that always puts me in a good mood. Plus I think they're from New York so it's all good.

1) I Love the National Football League.
brady_manning.jpg
You are not a real man if you aren't hype for this matchup today (and yes, i said it, take offense you non-real men). You are even less of a man if you don't even watch it (Pete). Curious, why wouldn't the NFL schedule this to be the SNF or especially the MNF game? I mean, Dallas-Philly (SNF) and Baltimore-Pittsburgh (MNF) are both incredible matchups, but to have the football equivalent of Luke vs. Darth a la Return of the Jedi be a daytime game? To all the Lab Blog readers in Seattle, Oakland, Cleveland, Houston.... I feel bad for you. Your local CBS station is going to broadcast your game instead of the greatest matchup of the year. I also feel bad for you guys because your team is either the Seahawks, Raiders, Browns, or the Texans.

Michael Wilbon of the Washington Post wrote a great article on the matchup between the two great QB's facing off, and how this is very rare instance that two undefeated teams meet this late in the season.

2) If the Redskins don't beat the lowly Jets....
saunders.jpg
Al Saunders MUST go.

3) Awesome picture, no clue who it is:

Too bad the amount of hits this blog gets daily TRUMPS the amount of viewers the NHL gets per game. You think I'm joking? I swear to god, I'm not sure of the numbers, but I'm pretty sure the number of hits this blog gets is higher than the avg. NHL attendance number, which I imagine it to be around 12,000. Interesting.

4) Speaking of white people....
bface1.jpg
bface2.jpg
To my white Blog viewers out there.... you gotta tell your peoples.... on Halloween, it is soo not cool to paint your face to be a "black." Even if you don't mean to blackface, the shit's gotta stop, I was looking at my Facebook homepage, and came across this fool in a friend's newest photo album, who dressed up at a Halloween party at UArts in PHILADELPHIA out of all the places, normally you hear of this ish happening in some hick-ass town in the middle of America. Damn cracker-ass-cracker got some nerve....

5) What the fuck is this....
gh2.jpg
Read in the Washington Post that an elementary school in Montgomery County, Maryland uses Guitar Hero as a developmental tool, and a good way to incorporate enjoyment in learning music. What kinda fucked up shit is this. I don't know bout you guys, but I grew up in the SAME Montgomery County Public School system, and my pussy-eating teacher Ms. Kelly gave me a FUCKING RECORDER to play.... A FUCKING RECORDER!
recorder.jpg
Sometimes if I was lucky, I got one of those big mallets and got to play on the school's only big-ass xylophone, opposed to the 15 other smaller-sized ones. And there was another fucking instrument, I have no idea what the fuck its called.... Its like a harp, but its laying down, and you press down on a series of buttons/keys and you stroke the strings with the other. Please help me out my fellow bloggers and tell me what the fuck that instrument is called, it is driving me crazy.

6) And in response to this post made by "Minimal Man"....

The Return of Boy Genius to the blog!!
(Don't worry ladies, the 'stache was a 5 minute joke and is gone now. The patent babyfaced gangster is back.)

Yes, I was on the back of a milkbox for a minute! Been real MIA from the blog the last couple months, as some of you millions of blog readers know, after 5 years of living in the city of Brotherly Love, I decided to pick up, say peace to Philly, and say hello to Hollywood. Now that I'm settled here in LA, It's time for Boy Genius to give people what they want: The Boy Genius Takeover. Lotta things on my mind lately....

Peace Philly....
philly.jpg

1) Introducing.... Jotto
jotto.jpg
I'll start with plugging in JOTTO, this indie band I know from South Philly, they just released their debut EP exclusively thru Turntable Lab, and you can now download it in the digital download store. Cop their shit, trust me. They are having a debut party at the Khyber in Philly very soon, I'll post that info in detail in the next couple days. Oh, and the drummer? He's single, hit him up too. Check 'em out on myspace.com/jottomusic.

2) Don't step to Koreans...
idiot_judge.jpg
Meet this idiot, Roy Pearson. I don't know if this made national news or not, but in case you haven't heard, this administrative law judge tried to sue for $54 million (!) lawsuit against my fellow Korean-Americans, The Chungs, owners of a Northeast Washington, D.C. dry cleaner. He was pissed cause they lost a pair of pants of his, which were in for a $10 alteration. Anyways, not only did this fucker lose the case, a judicial committee voted to fire him from his position and was ordered to vacate his office. Take that, take that, take that!!

3) Sorry Pete, but the Premiership has NOTHING on the NBA....

Thank god for Inside the NBA on TNT, and esp. Charles Barkley. Also, you need to read this incredible article on the league's fastest rising, and most unique star, Gilbert Arenas. His story, much like other NBA players, is truly incredible and extremely inspirational.

If the NBA started, that means the return of Fantasy Hoops....
draft_07.jpg
This is the breakdown of the first 9 picks made by my brother Pete and myself in our annual fantasy hoops draft the other night. As you can tell, I am clearly the fantasy genius. Mark it down for Boy Genius and the G-Burg Gorillas... championship!!

I know this isn't about the NBA, but this is hilarious....

"Fast break...... AWWW-VASTENDUNKVONHOLE!!!!!! VISHTENKDIEREENDURLUFT!!!!!......MEIN GOD!!!" The dunk I guess is from the German League, and whoever posted it proclaims it to be "the best dunk ever". Calm down son, nowhere near the best dunk ever, but it might be one of the best play-by-play calls ever. After seeing this clip about 100 times, I think that "VISHTENKDIEREENDURLUFT!" means something like "in your face!", but in German, it sounds much better. And to top it off, the guy who got posterized on also got kicked in the nuts in the process.

4) If you haven't seen or heard about THE play made by the Trinity Tigers (TX) - Division III football team, you must check this out, even you hipsters out there who dont like sports, check this out....

Probably beats out the classic Cal vs. Stanford play, however, running over the band that ran on the field is the kicker.... for an internet-only broadcast of a division III football game, the camera work is on point and the play-by-play guy is phenomenal.

5) Attn: Skins fans in/around L.A.
skinsfans.jpg
If you don't already, catch every Skins game at Hollywood Billiards with me and about 30-50 other Skins fans. Look out for me, surprisingly the only Skins fan there rockin' the J. Campbell jersey. Esp. come out this sunday when we forget about that Pats debacle from last week and whoop up on the flounder New York Jets.

6) From the Halloween party with DJ Gina Turner (Lab LA) the other night
ginaturner_1.jpg
ginaturner_2.jpg
I swear, this guy danced all night in front of Gina, just straight owning the dance floor with some futuristic George Jetson shit. He literally just danced all night, didnt even see him take a break or sip on a beer. Check out his sweat stained shirt!

7) Check out these pics from the Halloween party DJ Blu Jemz held down at the Dime in Hollywood.

I swear Blu Jemz's costume was The Pied Piper aka R. Kelly

best costume of the night? Ben Franklin, who was making it rain with a bunch of fake bills, esp. when Blu Jemz dropped "It's All About The Benjamins"

Check out my costume.... yea, that's a Michael Vick jersey, and yes, you see what you see. I got plenty mo' rope for your weak-ass dog too!

Fuck a store-bought costume! these are incredible: the giant Am-Ex Black card and the even mo' giant bag of ye, or as southern rappers call it, "Lindsay Lohan".

black jesus!

european dudes are so weird.

jell-o shots!

i love the ladies on Halloween....

in philly, we would say "dem jawns..."

the night ended like this....

8) Last but not least, like I said, I'm new in town, LA people hit me up! myspace.com/mayorofgburg
