don't get me wrong, i love to go to concerts where dudes fiddle with a laptop or spin encoded control discs.. what the hell is happening to real live music?

sinead-1.jpg

that's why i decided to go check out Sinead O' Connor. i wouldn't consider myself a huge Sinead fan (however, I Do Not Want is brilliant), but I figure if you've stuck around for this long, you must be doing something right... and that reggae album was pretty good. I went with Tony (the most undercover Sinead fan around) and we had an incredible time, slamming vodkas and beers, watching Sinead fans battle each other over noise level (rowdier fans would yell during songs while older fans would tell them to "shut the fuck up"... who's the realer fan?)... cool experience... i denounce my street cred yo.

sinead-2.jpg

later in the week, i went to go see Morrissey at the Hammerstein... i caught him on the last of 5 nights there. observations:

moz-1.jpg

1) this tour boasted that he'd play some of his greatest hits... he played close to 10 Smiths tracks including: Shoplifters, Girlfriend in a Coma, Stretch Out & Wait, How Soon Is Now, Death of A Disco Dancer (best song of the show), Please Please Please, and others.

2) people are obviously fed up with Moz's psychobabble, everytime he'd go off into his unfounded rants (Rolling Stone has never featured an artist of significance on its cover), fans would just yell back and tell him to shut the fuck up and sing...

3) what's up with his weird mic whipping thing?

4) in general Moz fans aren't that attractive, i forgot that only nerds, fags, skaters and outcasts listened in high school.

5) the traditional encore, where fans try to jump on stage and hug the dude might be the best part of the show. before the encore even began, bouncers were getting in 3 point stances on the stage. about 30-40 people tried, only 3 got sacks...

6) sadly nothing from Queen Is Dead, and he still keeps it real by doing a 6-7 song set of his new stuff, that no one cares about, except those people who "found" Moz a couple years ago...

moz-2.jpg

7) roc + woodman, this picture is for you... yes, Moz still takes off his shirt... he's kinda jacked now, weird...

ps. that video struggle put up is awesome, especially that second song by Human Race... if anyone has that record/cassette, give me a shout...

so last night I djed a couple parties... Halloween themed of course...(oh and did i mention that one of them was a suicide girls party?)
For some reason this year, I wasn't very into dressing up, so last minute, I thought to myself, what would be a good costume to dj in so I am comfortable and etc?...
of course..

Dan-O was Kanye, and I was Steve Aoki.

I even had my own aoki-groupies.

I have no idea who this guy was but all night he was doing some insane interpretive dance moves on stage... it looked like Elaine from Seinfeld. shout out random dude. I wish i had a video of you to relive the moment over and over.

I still didnt win the damn costume contest.

besides some mixer ghetto-ness... i had fun.

some turntable lab family even came.
shout out to kidpaparazzi.com for the photos.

The crowd went nuts for this song... which made me happy because they weren't really a house crowd.. so some education went down. Big Room House = Magic

have a happy halloween.

I made a half-hour 90s mix on Ableton. Even though many artists are not represented here (whither thou goest, STP, RHCP, GNR, RATM, DMB, and Candlebox?), I at least scratched my Melissa Etheridge itch on this tape.

Our boy Sammy just dropped this mix to help promote his new 12" on Fool's Gold (which you can buy on vinyl at le Lab starting today). It's pretty damn FRESHHHHHHH, here's what he had to say about it:

"I made this mix as a companion to "High Top Fades," my new Fool's Gold EP. The tracks on the EP are all dancefloor remixes of early 90's hits, and working on the songs gave me the idea of making a mix themed around selections in the Hip-Pop cannon from this era. In particular, the mix highlights artists who sported the hair style referenced in the title. Its 55 minutes of fly hair and fresh beats to take you back to your 6th grade dance. Or take me back at least..."

The LA store has been all about support for some of our favorite record labels at the Lab. We just had a in-store pre party for the Fools Gold/Dim Mak/Ed Banger Tour. We had Mehdi, Catchdubs, Them Jeans, Kavinsky, Dan-O, and the new Gina Turner/Louisahhh!!! collabo Staccato rock the decks. Sparks supplied the cans filled with 16 oz's of good times.

Gina Turner and Louisahhh!!! thawed it out

Dan-O and Them Jeans warmed it up

Catchdubs made it hot

And Mehdi killed it. . .

Fools Gold artist Kid Cudi also rocked a set with Catchdubs

A few days later, Jake and I were off to Nike's Point to play in the Stones Throw 2K8 Zombie War Basketball Tournament. We almost had to forfeit cause of a no-show, but Nike hooked us up with a sub, named Rock, who could actually ball . . . We beat Fat Beats in the first game, and we'll just leave it at that.

Here's the story:

All the soreness the next couple of days was well worth the free nike gear, bbq, drinks, and meeting/hanging with all the LA peeps involved in the scene.

Beyond Booking presents
THE BUNKER

this week:
Frivolous
(Karloff, ~scape | Berlin)
Eric Cloutier
(Subtrak, Untitled | NYC via Detroit)

Classifying the unusual character of Frivolous is a challenge. His school-teachers all tried and failed, finally attributing his unconventionality to a learning disability and decidedly closing the case on him completely. Born and raised on a farm in the suburbs of Vancouver, Grades were always mediocre at best for young Daniel, until one semester a mysterious new course emerged into the curriculum; Electronic Music Composition. Suddenly discovered, were honor roll grades, and a means to merge an imaginative young mind with over a decade of fiercely enforced classical piano training.

In 1996, captivated by the unified dance floors and Detroit sounds, the 16-year-old embarked on a life-long love-affair with the loop and took his first DJ residency at a Vancouver afterhours. After two successfully directionless years studying electronics and design, and after dabbling with some independent releases, Daniel decided to put his pride aside and demo his accomplishments. A CD of incomplete works were sent out as an experiment to 5 of the most innovative labels in Germany, and received back were 3 requests to release it. The encouragement and new-found confidence led to the birth of the project Frivolous.

Now with more than 40 releases and over a dozen 12"s to his name, Frivolous has toured the globe playing an eclectic array of venues and festivals along the way. It's been over a year since Daniel joined us at the Bunker, and he's released a great album on ~scape in the meantime.

In a genre and movement all too predictable with the same fifty records playing forever on a continuous loop, Eric Cloutier is quietly making himself stand out amongst Detroit's next generation of producers and DJ's. He began on the same circuit of Detroit parties and clubs most have traveled, eventually establishing residencies at Ann Arbor's Necto and Detroit's prominent after hours party spot, The Works. He also performed at both 2004's Movement festival as well as 2006's Detroit Electronic Music Festival, and has shared the decks with fellow Detroit DJ's Matthew Dear, Derek Plaslaiko and Ryan Elliott. In 2005, he was handpicked as a chosen replacement for the next batch of DJ's at Detroit's monthly Untitled parties. He has since gone on to be label manager for the label Subtrak, which is slowly making waves amongst deeper minimal fans. Tasteful yet mildly abrasive, his blend of minimal techno infused with dub sensibilities firmly entrenches his sound in Detroit's rich past while looking towards the future.

Australia was fucking incredible. Ian took 350 pictures!

The club in Sydney was already rammed when we got there at 11 PM. There was a three way battle between Ro Sham Bo, Hoops and Peace Out crews, fucking madness.

Anna Lunoe (Hoops) - the Hoops girls were tag teaming new hip-hop and dancing up a storm in matching outfits. I felt like they won but Ro Sham Bo were ill and clearly the crowd favorites.

Newcastle was a sort of cheesy outdoor hotel party but everyone was on drugs and they were going off to Baile funk and Baltimore Club and electro house when we got there. All that stuff is super popular in Australia, it's not even underground music there.

Huge huge shout out to Alanna who rescued us from the insanity in Newcastle and took us sightseeing in Sydney!

Circular Quay - we hung out for three hours watching the sun set.

Sydney Opera House

See all the pictures here!
We're back out on the road tommorow to Detroit and California, we'll be back in the city from Saturday on for a bunch of Halloween parties and other fun, out in Vegas Thursday then back for The Rub. As always, tour dates are all over at DJAyres.com.

NEW LAB LA RADIO (Haul said this was the best show yet, CHI-CHING!!!)

Unfortunately it has been up all month, so you only have 7 days left to listen!!! (NIce Jemz!)

This month my guests were...

ROGER YAMAHA

yaslover.jpg

My Second Cousin let me post up a mix he did over the summer for our friends at the Swedish magazine RODEO. This guy makes all the records I hate sound good to me, he can do no wrong in my book.

We filled in for Ronson this week for a special SECOND COUSINS episode of Authentic Shit . It was pretty classic from what i remember.

LLOYD-SKI

sexylloyd.jpg
What can I say about this guy? His set was mostly 80's House shit, in the BIG FUN style. I'm definitely jacking him for all this shit next time i see him.

ELI ESCOBAR
elicharles.jpg
Again WTF is left to say about this guy? His set was all his own production , mostly unreleased. I think he wanted to scrap it cause a snare drum was off in the mix or something, sounded dope to me. One thing tho, when I went to his Myspace (i'm too lazy at this point to make a link), I noticed it lost all the comic book sci-fi charm? Was that part of your new big-dawg DJ management contract???

CURTIS VODKA
(too lazy to look for a pic)
I love this guy even if I feel like his weird guy personality is totally fabricated. He's kind of on some Madlib shit in a weird (very weird) way. Lots of train wrecks, but I don't think he cared. Plus anyone who mixes Evelyn Champagne King into Alan Braxe is a winner for pushing it to the limit.

Thanks guys...

isn't the internet super-awesome?
if we had it when i was a little kid, we wouldn't have had the highly inefficient underground black market of porn (ripped pages found at the creek, stolen mags from older brothers, the really weird practice of trading mags, hitting up that weird kid in school that had always had porn somehow, the stand in front of a bookstore and ask some dude to buy you porn). i digress... anyway, googling for a hand sign painter, I found this dude... Raphael Boguslav, old school graphic design head that did the New York Life logo, the Keebler logo, and the ones you see above... check out his site.

also, i haven't found a sign painter yet... if you know one in nyc, hit me up.

Lloydski and Egg Foo were givin me shit the other day for only ever doin one lab post, so the peer pressure sunk in and now I present my SEGUNDO LAB POSTO!!

Blu Jemz recently called me out on Scion radio for gettin' fired from the Lab a few years back. Not many know the full story, so here goes.
Kevin aka DJ Stress was 'managing' the store at the time. It took a long time for Head Quarters to catch on, but dude NEVER showed up on time. I mean never, and when i mean late, we're talking 3,4, sometimes even 5 hours. No excuse either - just a head shake, smile, and a quick 'sorry'. I always covered for his ass too. Warehouse calls, 'where's Kevin?'
'Oh, he's at the deli' or 'Oh, he's at the bank'. Anyway, I had been up all night Djin on a Friday and got to the store still half drunk, but on time. Kevin was a no show. It was Saturday and the store was packed. I was running around pulling records, getting equipment out of the basement, ringing people up, answering the usual dumb phone calls, like 'Uh... yeah. Yo. uhhh...yeah yeah. Umm...where y'all at?'
Kevin finally shows up at like 5pm, and i still haven't eaten a thing, and am maintaining on about 3 hours sleep. Kevin's like 'aww so sorry dude' in such a cute way i can't even get mad. I tell him i'm going in the back to take a lil' disco nap cause i'm exhausted, and he's like yeah yeah go ahead man.
Not 2 minutes after i put my head down, Tony walks in the store and screams 'See! This is the kinda shit i'm talking about! I'm not paying you to sleep!'
So busted, so fired. Kevin never said a word...I was done.

Here's another old school pic/story. This is before the days when 'Serato' was the best-selling new genre at the Lab. The ROC and I were dorking around on Halloween day in 2001. Andy got all jealous when i busted out my Cheech costume so he's like 'I'm gonna be Al Pacino from Serpico!' and he went and bought this hat on St. Marks, and some gay leather vest (not shown here). We were fucking around having scratch battles, and outta nowhere Andy busts out his newest scratch technique.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

And now for the give away. I guess to have a really cool blog, you're supposed to giveaway your most secret and favorite rare records. I don't get it. But Lloyd assured me i'd get more gigs and pussy if i do. So here's an old baltimore track I used to play A LOT back in the day. I almost put it on my Rave Classics mix, but for some reason it didn't make the final cut. Enjoy...

Monkeys kill Delhi Deputy Mayor

Delhi has long struggled to cope with the marauding monkeys. The deputy mayor of the Indian capital Delhi died on Sunday after being attacked by a horde of wild monkeys.

SS Bajwa suffered serious head injuries when he fell from the first-floor terrace of his home on Saturday morning trying to fight off the monkeys. The city has long struggled to counter its plague of monkeys, which invade government complexes and temples, snatch food and scare passers-by. The High Court demanded the city find an answer to the problem last year.

Solution elusive

One approach has been to train bands of larger, more ferocious langur monkeys to go after the smaller groups of Rhesus macaques. The city has also employed monkey catchers to round them up so they can be moved to forests. But the problem has persisted.

Culling is seen as unacceptable to devout Hindus, who revere the monkeys as a manifestation of the monkey god Hanuman, and often feed them bananas and peanuts. Urban development around the city has also been blamed for destroying the monkeys' natural habitat.

Mr Bajwa, a member of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is survived by his wife and a son, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

Jesus Christ! Everyone settle down! It was a joke! Have I ever pretended that I listened to anything in 1996 other than They Might Be Giants and alternative rock radio??? Do I "front"?

And also thank you, Cary, for rooting quietly for me in the corner. Loyalty is a hallmark of valor, and you sir are a gentleman.

In other news, the future of cinema is only 2 months away.

ever wonder what it would be like to play against a world class soccer team? check you local cable listings for the replay of France's match vs the Faroe Islands in Euro qualifying. The Faroe Island squad fielded a team of local semi-pros and a couple scandinavian pros against what basically was France's top squad (Anelka, Ribery, Henry at attack). They play on the equivalent of a college-stadium and the whole presentation has a surreal quality to it. The outcome is predictable, but the gross mismatch is fascinating...

cary, i'm glad you called me out on my fatal flaw of upping Silver Spoons. that show was definitely on the wack tip of money and mayonnaise. i guess i was always seduced by the mini-train that went to parts of the house we never got to see and the hot step-mom. my apologies.

i recently got back from paris, which is quite an intimidating place. there's no way not to feel like a tourist unless a local holds your hand and takes you somewhere that you'd never find on your own... anyway, i hit up Joplus to tell me the places to eat, and he gave me a list of places to go, but prefaced it with:

"if you can only hit one of those hit the first one, the sauce they serve with the steak is more addictive than crack... I have re-occuring dreams about it!"

that's the place for me.

ok, so this isn't some hole in wall, down a dark alley place... it's a super-famous place near Champs Elysees, but most of the people there were definitely french... of course there's a long line (no reservations) even at 11pm. the all female wait staff is dressed in sexy maid outfits (even though some aren't that sexy).

there's only one choice in the restaurant. no menus. the waitress simply asks you how you want the steak cooked.

paris-steak-1.jpg
it finally arrives. check out that sauce. my first bite was underwhelming, i was expecting some sort of first french kiss mouth explosion by the way people were skarfing the food around me (there was a 80 year old couple literally licking the plate behind me). but with each bite, this sauce started growing a head, arms, and legs...

paris-steak-2.jpg
i devoured that shit but....

paris-steak-3.jpg
the best part is that they bring "seconds". the waitress saw me eyeing the sauce, so she dumped extra on there....

paris-steak-5.jpg
round two... finished... did i mention how perfect the fries are? and how much better they get in that sauce?

paris-steak-4.jpg
i love you sauce.
