NEW TURNTABLE LAB LA RADIO SHOW (Actually its been up for a while, I've just been lazy. Listen this week as it will probably be updated again soon and it was a good one)....

This month my guests were...
pasey.jpg
PASE ROCK
Pase's set was full of exclusives from his crew that may never see the light of day (e.g. XXXchange's Thom Yorke remix). I tried to get him to freestyle but instead he forced me to interview him for a good 20 mins about whatever. The interview is actually pretty interesting, especially when I got him talking about Ohio's Funk legacy. The only problem was the two of us were too lazy to get up and change the record so the same song is playing the whole twenty minutes, hahahaha. COME TO HIS B-DAY NEXT SUNDAY AT BANANA SPLIT!!!

miniknishcc3.jpg

THE KNISH HIT SQUAD

Mike B and DJ Trident are too childhood friends who DJ and make beats and remixes together as the Knish Hit Squad. I'm sure I've bigged up Mike enough on this blog, but the truth is he deserves it. If you haven't already check out his blog, it wil make your harddrive that much better than the next man. Trident has his own site were you can download all kinds of Knish Hit Squad remixes and other things that are worth the trip. I actually came close to losing my show cause of these guy's set, 175 curse words in total! Mike and I had to spend an entire afternoon editing this shit, so you better enjoy!

NEXT MONTH... ELI, LLOYD, ROGER & CURTIS!!!

btw... Snack and Commish you win this month for that amazing Tron thing.. Wow!

Today, Sunday, September 30, tune in to Shade45 on Sirius sattelite radio from 3PM-5PM EST to hear me spinning hip-hop on "Rep Yo Set." The first hour I'm playing all new music and the second hour I'm dropping nothing but classic 90s NY shit.

What is with people who introduce themselves as their DJ/B-Boy names?

It's so not OK.

Then we're having a little after party....
A few words on Baron Zen...
Long before making his name as a DJ/Producer and founding Stones Throw
Records, Peanut Butter Wolf was programming drums for a one-man
punk/rock/disco army known as Baron Zen (aka Sweet Steve). Known, that is to
almost no one, because Baron Zen did not play any shows, did not release
records, rejected all forms of publicity, and above all, rejected the
boundaries separating hip-hop, disco, punk rock, and pop. Baron Zen today
sounds like suburban punk rock garage bands of the '80s and the DJ culture
of today... or The Dead Milkmen if they had been hip-hop b-boys. The
original album will finally see the light of day alongside remixes by some
of PB Wolf1s favorite artists: Madlib, J.Rocc, James Pants, Arabian Prince,
Danny Breaks, Blu Jemz, and many more.

HOPEFULLY THE GIRLS IN THE VIDEOS BELOW WILL SHOW UP..

The creative gang over at LVHRD are at it again, this time with an event that'll really hit home with Lab folks and the dj nerdus...

lvhrd-dnchrd.jpg

On September 25th, 2007 LVHRD will host DNCHRD III: VNYL here in NYC. Three DJ's will take the stage for a LIVE TURNTABLE BATTLE where LVHRD members provide the vinyl - theme being 90s dance music - and break out the tracksuits for a dance-off (with awards for best dance crew).

As for the DJ competitors, lets just say they they're pretty well known DJs from the NYC area - one repping East Village Radio, one from Music For Robots, and someone from the Lab.

That's all going down next tuesday... but check the pre-party TONITE for free admission to the battle.

Just bring a slab of 90s vinyl to the pre-party at B-Side and your admission to DNCHRD III on sept 25th is FREE.

B Side
204 Avenue B btw 12th and 13th
7pm-midnight

If not, get tickets here and find profiles of the competitors, choice song selections and key moments in the history of dance on the blog at LVHRD.

So this is my new joint brought to you with no shame involved, this should be in the TTL lab fam hands soon.
I know underground love and quaility has declined since recent trends have changed but this is underground album thats radio friendly in a non trendy way.Plus DJ Morse Code did half the production and MURS is signed to a major now!!! Underground is about to resurface in a new form...

After a 2 year hiatus, a core member of Galapagos4's West Coast operation, MESTIZO, is back with his official homecoming album. “Dream State” is MESTIZO's interpretation of his native land of California, which is a dream world in itself, filled with eccentric beings entranced in a dream state.

This album is entirely produced by the new super duo Julian Code, made up of Sean Julian (best known for the highly successful Psych Rock LP "Trap Door” on Groove Merchant Records) and DJ Morse Code, the San Francisco native better known for his club monster DJ status as part of the Super Friends crew. DJ Morse Code has also been caught DJing side by side with DJ AM, Steve Aoki, A-TRAK and The RUB DJ's to name a few, but here he is letting the world in on his gritty 12-bit SP-1200 production style.

MESTIZO has gained tremendous respect from his peers and elders alike as a passionate writer, amazing performer, and stern leader of the next generation of artist. Lyrically, MESTIZO teamed up with JOE DUBBS, ISAIAH, QWEL, 2MEX AND MURS and although, DREAM STATE is an album that needed no features, each individual that contributed to the album gladly added to its magnificence. Together they have created classic duets in honor of the golden state sound. MESTIZO embodies the true sound and style of a California heavy weight and is sure be a mogul to many and this album the future blueprint of how the West Coast Rocks.

Tracklist:
1. Rumble Fish
2. Coast Guard
3. Solid Gold
4. PrettyBoy Zoid
5. Back Wash Feat. Joe Dubbs & 2Mex
6. Suzy Q
7. Confrontational Act

I just got back from a week of vacation in Iceland! It was beautiful but cold. We saw glaciers, geysers, lava rocks, waterfalls and lots of sheep. I didn't eat any whale meat though.

This is the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal pool whose water is heated by lava. It's next to a geothermal power station and the whole thing is very science fiction.

Reykjavik is small for a capital city - the entire population of Iceland is only 300,000 people. It's pretty quiet during the week but then on the weekend everybody gets wasted.

Anyhow now I'm back and I'm looking at blogs. DJ Soul just started his shit and he's killing it. Fat Lace (UK) also just started up online and they are funny as hell. Just Blaze is mad entertaining. Stretch and Roctakon fell off but DJ Eli and Mike
B
stay putting up lots of good music. Lloyd has lost his mind and Woody is still a tortured soul. Them Jeans keeps you updated on everything LA and The Stencil's Honorable DJ Caps keeps me updated on politics and the ice hockey. Attorney St has streetwear and MP3s. You already know Catchdubs and Mad Decent and Discobelle and Fluokids. It's not a blog but of course there's always Airhorns. And I try to keep The Rub blog updated at least once a week.

sorry for lack of posts,
i have my hands in both the physical and digital realms these days...
but really all i want to do is watch NFL in HD or sleep in my Tempurpedic...
seriously, i hate keeping up with the joneses when it comes to new techy gadgets, but those two things are just about essential these days...
yes, let me tell you, once you've slept on a Tempurpedic, you're not going back, you wake feeling energized... it really works... i swear... if you want another essential, go eat at pearl... enough of that tho...

this ain't no streetwear trend....

also bonus stony footage from our trip to the Dominican Republic...

lots of drinking, cards, and cafeteria action,

beach action, right is tony's bro... domer
he has a sick mind...
our pool was pretty craze too, they had reggaeton battles every afternoon (no joke)...

dr-jasperwins.jpg
are you kidding me? the perennial biggest loser, Frogman, swept up on this trip. after taking the entire pot in hold em, he proceeded to decimate the black jack table for maximum pesos... dude was on fire that night... and of course tony (always beats the house) was up a cool g by the end of the night...

and lastly,
still waiting on the last set of photos
where we discover tony's legitimate doppleganger on the beach.
it has to be seen to be believed!

Neighborhood Watch - Episode 1: Morning Breath

Went over to see what else is happening in Dumbo and ended chillin' with the guys over at Morning Breath. They do design for some of the biggest names in music right now, not to mention they kill it when it comes to art and doing things the hard way. I won't mention their long list of achievements(check "samples" on their site and recognize) but I will say that they make Dumbo a dope place to work. Now to the important issues: Who are Doug and Jason?

dougjason-bw.jpg

Doug rules. My graf friends in Cali would shit their pants if they knew I was talking to the one and only Dug One. Anyways, if you want a history lesson by Doug himself, watch this. Instead, let's focus on important stuff - like the fact that he digs it when Bjork uses a talkbox(like Roger and Zapp) and how he found this hardly used electric race track in the trash, outside his place on his birthday. Now it acts as the best in-office stress reliever ever.

(Nothing is more nostalgic to childhood, then the smell of the track when the electric charge fires up. )
dougjason.jpg
racetrack01.jpg

Jason is the typograph master and Morning Breath's taller half. Unbeknowst to many, all those old, middle aged men in the majority of Morning Breath's paintings are actually "old" versions of Jason. Just add a couple lines here and there and voila!

jasonnoto-1.jpg

Here's the originals, all hand drawn sonn!

Jason's newest prize. Dan Clowes print w/ Sweet linework.

Thanks neighbor bros for the inside look. Its been a real treat.

Who's next on Neighborhood Watch? Mabye that mysterious, trip-hop producer girl down the hall who's always looking sad on in her flyers. Doesn't she work with Tricky? I've always been curious as to what goes on in that studio...

Till next time. Hang tough.

A-Trak and I are in Vegas DJing pool parties for the VMAs. They made us turn the monitors off because George Lucas was doing interviews in the cabanas. We were happy to oblige, but it turns out it was George MALOUF who owns the hotel. And did not invent jawas. Man...

Coming to a town near you! Not gonna copy and paste the press release but here's some bullet points:

- The label is going on a North American tour this October featuring everyone on the above flyer plus special guests.

- Then A-Trak and Medhi go on an European tour of their own, check Trizzy's MySpace for the dates.

- To coincide with (and follow up) the tour, we've got new records coming from Cool Kids, Kid Sister, Kavinsky, Kid Cudi, Sammy Bananas, Jokers of the Scene, Bag Raiders, and more fine folks before year's end.

- There's gonna be tee shirts!

THE BLOG IS HOT!!!

...and i'm lovin' it. Thanks Hahn (the young Rick Rubin?) & Ski (the young black guy down with the Lab?)...
...not lovin' Flight of The Condors... is it just cause I hardly ever smoke weed anymore or is that shit actually less funny than American TV? No disrespect to New Zealand, they did give us SERATO (which has really helped make the DJ game a lot more interesting, huh?), double thanks!!!

FUCK EVERYBODY BUT MY NEPHEW!!!

The New York Times Magazine has an interesting (10 pages long) article on Rick Rubin, the man who started DefJam together with Russell Simmons. He was still living in a NYU dorm when he produced T La Rock and Jazzy Jay, L L Cool J and the Beastie Boys. (That reminded me how Pete, Jasper and Tony started ttl from a tiny room while graduating college).

Rick Rubin is now co-head of Columbia Records (which is owned by Sony). The article asks "can Rick Rubin save the music business?" It is no news that music has never been so diverse and readily available, thanks to the internet which killed the oligopoly that the major record companies had on the music market. Before, the majors could rely on their tightly controlled distribution networks to sell just about any crap. Now they have to rethink what kind of artists they produce and how they distribute them.

Rubin says "Columbia is stuck in the dark ages. I have great confidence that we will have the best record company in the industry, but the reality is, in today's world, we might have the best dinosaur. Until a new model is agreed upon and rolling, we can be the best at the existing paradigm, but until the paradigm shifts, it's going to be a declining business. This model is done." The article doesn't quite say what the new model could be for converting these old dinosaurs into agile predators. For now they are still stuck in a pathetic and self-defective battle against file sharing & bootlegs.

While it touches upon the epic tragedy of dying dinosaurs, the article really focuses on Rubin's persona. Beyond his rock'n'roll guruesque style, what's really interesting about this man is that he has truly followed his heart throughout his career. "I know this sounds hard to believe, but I never had any expectations of success," he said. "I knew what I liked, and I didn't really care if anyone else liked it. I still never assume that anyone will like anything. But I can't imagine that they won't, either." A lesson to all of us.

One of the first artists Rubin will promote in the US as head of Columbia Records, the article says is Paul Potts, who first appeared on "Britain's Got Talent," a version of "American Idol." Rubin is definitively a surprising guy. Can Rick Rubin & Paul Potts save the music industry? I let you juge. In any case it is time to let the dinosaurs die and a million ttl bloom.
