oh snap! is it really lloyd's birthday party tomorrow night?
l2.jpg
even wes was like "where's this party gonna be at?"

i was all "you know this video? we're doing it at the same venue" (289 kent ave, BK, if you don't bring a birthday present don't bother coming)
on the decks will be me, woodman, and special guest from shanghai, dj kamikaze. Kami is part of the bananas crew in china, but also spins frequently in russia, germany, and australia. he recently did a mixtape for russian artist Timati, who (your boy) scott storch has taken interest in producing for.

to koppeltop the whole event we've booked luke stiles (he'll get ticked if i bill him as "mayor of the fixed gear scene") to host this whole throwdown. (cracker jack fact #23 luke's brother jared is the sax player in this band)

Someone Great by LCD Soundsystem

My high school sweetheart and I broke up when we were in college. Then, sometimes, we would be unbroken up. This was not easy for me, I had a soft face and confused head. I was taking writing classes and very exact. I remember, vividly, seeing her for the first time in months after she went away for the summer, came back calmer with longer hair and looser clothing. It was nice to see her, easy. Then (and less now, but still; now) I was too eager to be taken with grandeur, prone to unnecessary loftiness, the kind of person for whom everything is experiential. This is all embarrassing (what I am telling you, the fact that it’s possibly still true). Then, though, unaware and self-important, I went and wrote about her and I, called us “synchronized swimmers” and lamented not only the loss of that synchronicity, but the lackadaisicalness towards her it was replaced with. This poem wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good. Regardless I brought it to my poetry class, had it lauded; my twenty-year-old success, accolades from worse-than-me student writers and a teacher who published in Ploughshares! This was it, this was the end: I described a thing as another thing and people understood the thing as it was. Synchronized swimmers, huh? It’s like automatic closeness, elaborate showiness of natural movement that masks the mechanical practice and struggle needed to create such glorious dual fluidity! That was us! Who needed descriptions, bright and accurate, of my skin tone in the morning, of the grim carpeting of her dorm, of the way she sushed me when speaking to her mother? None of these things brought the experience as close as synchronized swimmers. So, then, I stopped writing about how things were and started writing about how other things things were like were. When I wrote a magazine review like this about this song (in its instrumental form as part of LCD Soundsystem’s mix for iTunes) the editor told me to talk about how it sounded. I changed it, a little. When the magazine ran, the review wasn’t there. I’ve not written for him since, unable to become specific and grounded. Here I write of willows and wingdings for free and on end. There I am losing ten cents a word and my name in print. I am unsure who is missing out.

Tourist Trap by White Rabbits

I thought I had pesto but I was out, but I’d already cooked the pasta so I ate it with olive oil, sea salt and pepper, talked to my sister on the phone about her new dog (“The vet says I can’t name him Noah because it sounds like ‘No.’”) and, in all ways already sated, then I went to see White Rabbits. They started at ten; I got there at ten. Apparently things start on time now, before time, even, and a billion prompt sweating losers stood in front of me blocking the band, so Liana and I got beers and listened from the sidewalk. When the café owner asked us politely to not drink beers on his sidewalk because he feared arrest we chugged and threw them away. He didn’t mind. When he came back later and saw us beerless, he smiled and waved. I waved back. I hopped a little mini-fence and watched White Rabbit through the fogged window amidst brambles and potential mosquito nests. They looked overdressed and kindly Midwestern; they are Midwestern. They gave people maracas, people sang along. I waved to the guy in the band close to the window; he cocked his head back at me, I climbed back over the fence to the sidewalk and my friends and was like, hey, this is fun.

A-Trak and I posted up at Kanye's party for Graduation last night. Spectacle! He played the album in full, complete with smoke machines, Daft-lite strobe effects, and video loops (Akira, Wong Kar Wai, Old Boy, Tron, anime titties). The record was phenomenal, alternately triumphant and sad - I was not expecting how emo it was gonna be. There's not much in rap that's a precedent for this, experimental shit that still knocks. Anyway, enough gushing. The promo shades were major.

To stay in the mood of the Madlib release and party last night at the LA store, I thought I'll post something on the Big Bad City. That's right, the one and only: Mumbai a.k.a. Bombay, the schizophrenic city with 2 names which is more prolific than any other at the moment. Not only does it produce more movies than LA, it also ridicules New York's reputation for being a rude city (This is not me saying it but the very respectable "Reader's Digest", quoted in wikipedia.)

To put things in context, Mumbai is India's most populated city and the country's financial and commercial capital. As you might have heard, China and India are the new giant players in the global game. Both countries are growing and urbanizing at unprecedented rates. While political dictatorship (to call things by their name) in China allows bureaucrats to tear down old neighborhoods, plan new cities and redevelop existing ones without having to deal with local opposition, things are a bit more messy in India.

Despite being notoriously corrupt, India has a lively democracy that could well serve as an inspiration to other countries (including some pretending to democratize the world by dropping bombs on it). True, Indians elect Bollywood stars to high political positions once in a while and that might look a little immature, but then again the richest state in the US has the Governator.

So much for politics. Here are a few shots from recent urbanological expeditions in Mumbai, starting with images of Dharavi, a 500 acres informal settlement in the heart of the city. Probably the most densely populated area in the world. Just to give you an idea, the population density of Dharavi is 4 to 6 times higher than that of daytime Manhattan.

IMG_1629.jpg

KutiwadiResidentialStreet.jpg

IMG_1668.jpg
These photos are all daytime shots.

IMG_1655.jpg
Kids are always smiling and happy to see a lost foreigner passing by. A feeling you don't get in Dharavi is that people are sad or depressed. Quite the opposite. People are up beat.

IMG_1638.jpg
A new plan by the government and the private sector to "redevelop Dharavi into a world-class township". People are looking at the poster showing a green field with a little bird. How cute. But what about them and the place they built from scratch?

IMG_1661.jpg
Made some friends. They didn't mug me I swear. Actually Dharavi is really safe.

IMG_1698.jpg
Summer sports

IMG_1699.jpg

In order to keep up with the massive influx of immigrants from rural areas to the city many things have been tried. Ghandi said let's help people where they are, in the countryside so they don't have to come to the city and live in slums. Some has been done but not enough to stop people from pouring in. Others like the self-styled nationalist Hindu leader Bal Thackeray believe that "Sons of the Soil" deserve more rights than those who are not from Mahashtra (Mumbai's state). This ideology mainly resulted in inciting ruthless violence against Muslims communities, some of which have been in Mumbai since before it was called Bombay by the Portuguese.

Bal.jpg
Bal Thackeray, another villain politician with style.

Taking it in their own hands urban planners started using their calculators and aggregating numbers. "The city needs mass housing" they said. "Let us build many high-rise concrete housing buildings!" (Yes the same kind that failed miserably all over the US and Europe -ever been to East New York?) Developers could not agree more. People need high-rise. So they built them on the edges of the city. Here are few shots from New Bombay and Mira Road.

IMG_1756.jpg
New Bombay same old story.

IMG_1407.jpg
Mira Road is a little more messy and human...

IMG_1400.jpg
... but still has fenced windows and sorry sights.

IMG_1486.jpg
The Indian urban masala quickly takes over though. That really saves it.

IMG_1479.jpg

And as a special bonus, here is a short video of a crowded commuter train. No doors, no mercy. People are often singing together. Imagine that in New York subways? At the end of the movie you can hear the voice of ttl idol Frogman, saying he wants some more.

More images and texts on Mumbai here.

anyway bozack also gave me some info on the allies for those who care: "develop is making beats for juelz and i think infamous was in an all acoustic band (hisself on guitar) based outta miami (pronounced me-am-me)..."

one more observation: what's up the philipino dudes always in the background of DJ videos? that's some weird hierarchal shit, you rarely see white dudes on stage... always a phlip with a 6 panel cap, sitting on a speaker (or a nerdy black dude)... i think the big dude with the glasses in IXL video is especially classic... he adds so much too the performance... especially his "i just peeed my pants look..."

Dudes. This new Fog album is serious. You might have seen this Minneapolis musical powerhouse performing in your city, mistakenly booked on electronic blip-hop night with some random space rapp group opening up, or you might have picked up the first CD of experimental turntable-driven indie rock and then completely crossed them out of your musical radar zone.

Well it's time to revisit these dudes. They've ditched the turntables and are now coming the fuck with it in a full-steam-ahead rock trio format. Guitar + drums + bass + hella effects + awesome song writing + psychedelic darkness + garage rock mayhem. Waste some time here.

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

Sunday was the last of the free Pool Parties at McCarren Park in Brooklyn. The Rub and the BBC played rackords and brought out their friends to do some raps. Kid Sister, the Cool Kids, Santogold and "surprise guests" Spankrock and Amanda Blank all played. It was a real soggy, real fun family reunion.

Inglish from Cool Kids found a disc of songs bootlegged off their MySpace. "I guess this means we 'made it?' What are these bubbles on the cover?"

Almost as major as Chris BBC's Panda Bear shirt.

I just got back from a weeklong cruise with my extended family, going from Alaska to Canada. If you have never been on a cruise let me just say that it is very entertaining as well as slightly depressing. It's basically an old-people haven, and all the activities correspond accordingly: shuffleboard, mini-golf, hot-tub, karaoke-contests, wine with every meal, etc.

The highlight, however, is the fact that there are on-board artists who peddle their schlock to middle-american families who literally don't know any better. Here is just a small taste of the geniusness on-sale:

What's this piece that features a kid picking his nose while staring at breasts?
P1010907.JPG

Why, it's Young Art Critic, with a starting price of a mere $10,000? I was going to buy a new iMac but you offer a persuasive argument, Barry Leighton Jones!
P1010906.JPG

Let's walk a bit further shall we? Here is a controversial piece featuring grapes swimming in wine, then coming out to take a breathalyser from a cop.

Someone's been reading my dream book!!
P1010716.jpg

But of course I've been saving the summum bonum of high art for last. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you JIM FUCKING WARREN. Already considered a "living legend in the art world," Jim's impressive oeuvre features such recurring themes as Amazonian women, avalanches of snow turning into galloping horses, simultaneously erupting volcanoes, and of course cloud-people who are in love.

Here is an exciting piece in which a woman's hair is also a waterfall!
P1010904.JPG

Or how can we forget this devastating masterpiece, in which a 100' tall woman emerges from the sea, while the smoke from a smoldering volcano becomes not one but EIGHT giant bald eagles?

P1020690.JPG

And no discussion of Jim Warren's genius is complete without his greatest hit, Romantic Day.

Is your mind intact, dear reader? It may not be by the time you finish viewing this:

P1020682.JPG

The attentive art critic may have noticed the following:

*two lovers walking hand-in-hand into the ocean
*two lovers, as generated by the crashing waves, making out
*two dolphins, inexplicably surfacing from the water
*two volcanoes, simultaneously erupting
*two lovers in the clouds, also about to make out
*and, most mind-shattering of all, it is SOLD!

If you are disgusted, gentle reader, look away. However, if you are ready to gaze unblinkingly into the unstoppable powerforce of the FUTURE ITSELF, you can view Jim's website.

Make sure your speakers are on, or you might miss the sound of the whinnying horses that accompanies the page loading!

it's been a little bit cuz i was upstate. got caught on the wrong side of a situation and had to go away for a little while. All i'll say is, jail's not as bad as Sizzle made it out to be. i'm ok now though. been out for a few months. to celebrate, i took a vacation.

on my vacation, i flew through Reyjavik. i took a picture that i feel captures both joy and irreverence. largely irreverence. perhaps joy. please, enjoy it.

For being two dudes from Canada, Chromeo's first album had some cuts that perked the attention of the West Coast pop lock/ Boogie genes in my blood.
bootsy.jpg

She's In Control had packaging that was elegant, subtle, and gave off a classy vibe. Just look at the perfect retro airbrushing a la 80's grown & sexy albums. Nice.
mar_cd_025.jpg

Fancy Footwork is their newest album and is way more "hype" with a pop feel. I'm finding more and more of my friends like it and the response at shows is sweaty(a good thing). The only thing is, when I first saw the CD cover from far away I thought Dave P and P Thug were exposing some sexy legs!
chromeo-small.jpg

But as I got closer I realized what was going on.
chromeo1.jpg

But then I started to get scared. I started to get the hots for the sexy synth legs. What the hell is this feeling? Do I wanna spend my saturday with her? How would I make love to that thing? What will my parents think when I bring home a kinky keyboard?
chromeo-legs.jpg

Anyways, groups change and a new look is more modern I guess. This video for "Tenderoni" proves they're still fun and kickin' though.

If it were up to me I'd stick with the cut-off living leg theme and mash it up with with that freaky video for The Escape Club's "Wild Wild West".

some observations about Arsenal's opening match
1) Bacary Sagna is has quickly established as one of my favorites... super-solid and the hair... Wenger is probably the best at discovering quick, athletic wing backs...
2) speaking of quick wing backs, Gael Clichy is almost there... he just needs to work on what he does in the last quarter of the field
3) Flamini playing holding mid-fielder yesterday showed why Gilberto is so valuable to the team... they need Gilberto's simple, decisive passing and imposing presence in the middle...
4) hleb has definitely stepped his game up during the offseason, but he still lacking something... still not a fan...
5) rosicky is probably the guy who kills it in practice, but can't deliver in games... i think he needs some competition for his position...
6) eboue will come around in his new position... he's just too good...
7) walcott? the perfect sub, but definitely not a starter... needs better D
8) van persie... not a fan... he should score 20 this year, but he won't
9) Nicklas Bendtner... what a showing... Arsenal have not had a player like Bendtner in a while... did you see him almost head the ball in off a pop-up? size, strength, decent skills... finally a forward who can take a cross and put a body on the central defense...
10) toure + gallas = beastly center defense... strong, fearless, and fast...
11) eduardo da silva better be the answer, these guys still are lacking in the attack... if he isn't, look for a battle for fourth again...

so...its time for a little story about "urban exploration" in detroit...

for those of you that aren't from the area or aren't detroit techno history elite, the packard plant is one of the oldest ford motor plants in detroit. they built a lot of the early engines there, made some ww1 engines for fighter planes, and, after it had long been abandoned (and its still abandoned - good job city of detroit!), its now home to some of the cities best graffiti (random photoset here / entertaining tour of the plant).

well, after its rediscovery by smart rave promoters, it turned in to THE spot to have a party at. many of the cities most history events took place at the packard plant. you name it, it was there - and it was fucking awesome!!!

anyway...apparently it is being used for other...umm..."interesting" activies when its not being bombed with spraypaint, hit up by explorers, or generally looking fucking ugly on the detroit skyline.

enclosed is a set of photos that some friends took. basically...if you can't deduce it from their reduced sized...they stumbled upon a gay porn being shot involving superheroes. i'm going to let that sink in for a second...

the packard plant...is now hosting video shoots...of gay porn involving superheroes...

i am more embarrassed of this than any you can possibly imagine. i'm envisioning these guys going there trying to remember richie hawtin parties, too much acid, and walls of sound enlighting their youths...and they find this.

*sigh* detroit...what have you done to yourself?

hilariously enough...there's something jaw-droppingly funny about regular spiderman giving black spiderman a blowjob.

This past Sunday in Baltimore, System D128 was filming a video for Blaqstarr pal Rye Rye (that's her on "Shake It To The Ground") at teen night at Paradox. All the kids were wearing extra smedium Abercrombie tees and shredded up American Eagle hats, and the biggest songs of the night were late 80s/early 90s slowjams ("If you can't get a girl's number by the end of this song, you homo!", said Buck Jones, right in the middle of SWV's "Weak").

Pedro from Ed Banger has been posting from the Daft Punk tour over here. The pyramid stopped down in Chicago for a few days ("where the music we love is coming from. Names like Dj Sneak, Dance Mania, Paul Johnson, Cajmere, Roy Davis JR, we owe them so much, they are House music. Being here is kind of a pilgrim for us.") and you know dudes had to catch up with the Fool's Gold fam.

New Lab LA Radio episode posted...

This month I enjoyed the company of...

DJ ASSAULT

Not only did he kill his DJ set with mad new shit, but when I started playing instrumentals to interview him over homeboy came with the crazy freestyle session! Thanks for keeping it real Mr. Diamonds and making those other 130 bpm rappers look like boarding school spring breakers. After the freestyle session came the interview, which we NPR'd to death with topics that ranged from beef with Detroit producers to his studio set-up. Really tho check his set... crack-a-lating!!!

DARK ALLEY

Hands down Dark Alley is one of my favorite dj's/nigga's in LA! We actually go back to the late 90's in Brooklyn when our girlfriends at the time introduced us to each other (i think he even came to one of my mom's infamous X-Mas parties). Homeboy is from Detroit (which is really the only other city besides NY i give props to if your from there) & he proved it with this nasty Shari-Vari style classics set that I still listen to almost every morning to help me face the world. If your in LA come to one of our Ass N' Titties parties, they're by far the best shit in a legal club out here (Ass N' Titties presents M.I.A. this past week was beyond off the meat rack).

GINA TURNER & DAN-O

ginadano.jpg

Always gotta put on some young folks and these two are some of my favs right now, plus they're in love. Gina works at the Lab out here, but her talent is only being wasted at the store. She's honestly one of the best ravathon/house dj's in LA right now (she absolutely murdered the Dafter Party). Dan-O does Tuesdays with Aoki and Them Jeans at Cine-Space. I'm not sure if I've ever heard a full set from him (I'm at Winston's on Tuesdays... game tight!), never mind tho cause it's really Dan's production that made me pay attention. I had to twist his arm to drop some of his own shit on this show, but I'm glad I did. Step up son!!!

If your in LA i'm playing both Do-Over and Banana Split on Sunday and than I'm ghost till September so come thru!!!

Here's some more "Crank Dat Urkel Dance" videos, the MySpace page for the group who made it, and some backstory on the "Crank Dat..." phenomenon (all thanks to this guy, who parlayed snap songs and writing on his sunglasses with a white-out pen into an Interscope record deal).

Dirty South Joe and Low Budget should do a sequel to Snap Or Die composed of nothing but "Crank Dat..." variations. "Crank Dat Fun Dip" will be a fan favorite (Snackmaster I see you!), but "Urkel Dance" will be the clear highlight of the disc.

How could it not be?

Q - Q and Not U - Wonderful People by Schnipper

This is a terrible story. The song is good. I recorded a full day of anecdotes in Ayres’ living room while he looked at hip hop songs on a Xeroxed sheet he had an intern prepare for him. I was wearing a flannel shirt, the only time I ever wore that shirt, and tried to be jovial while talking into a microphone and looking at a computer screen. Later Ayres smoothed out every time my teeth hit the microphone and we watched Jaws 3-D, the whole thing. I took a cab to a birthday party and it wasn’t fun. Happy Birthday Nancy

Rise Up in the Dirt by Voxtrot

The reason I write about music I like is because there is so much music I don’t like. Most music. There is so much music and most of it is bad. Some of it is okay. Like Mims or something. Eventually, who cares. There is plenty I like that I don’t talk about, but why do you want to read about me riding for tracks on side C of Christinia Milian’s album (Peanut Butter and Jelly! What a simile [and metaphor!]!)? But sometimes there is something that is good that other people think is bad or something that is so good everyone thinks is good or something that is good that only some people like and I am one of those people and I don’t like the other things the other some people like and that’s difficult for me sometimes and that’s Voxtrot and I am always stumped. Okay because look, I hate the Smiths and Spoon is doodoo but this is a good medium for me! I said this sounded like Ben Folds Five once and that wasn’t wrong but now I guess I like them and what am I supposed to do with that? Other people think this is precious and overwrought and genuine. They’re not unwrong but they’re not right, either. This shit is total fine line genius. What line it’s walking, I’m not sure. Why do I like Voxtrot? He says “When you are free from the work of this house/you know what to do with your hands/or at least I’m sure you’ve got a few ideas.” I know this because I have listened to this song 21 times (number 19 on my top 25). I’m at home and what I’m doing with my hands is flipping over Nelly records to listen to Neptunes instrumentals. Is that what he meant?

Damn, C*dy you beat me to it.

But building off that, Showbiz Pizza was the illest. For an 8ish year old young buck, there was nothing better than pizza, the Star Wars video game, and the animatronic puppets singing weird hillbilly animal versions of oldies bangers. I still have the 45 of the Rock-a-Fire Explosion covering "Do You Love Me" and Sam Cooke "We're Having a Party."

I tried going to Chuck E Cheese like three years ago to try to relive a small percent of the magic and it was an utter disaster. All of the video games were just shitty Chuck E Cheese ticket games. The puppet shows were like 5 minutes long and had intermissions of Veggie Tales Christian cartoons. Do yourself a favor and just enjoy the memories.
