Great idear Adrian... I"ll ride the "it's Lloyds 23rd B-day, so you have to come thru to HIS PARTY!" It's gonna be 76 and sunny this Sunday on the Gowanus Canal with Prins Thomas. It's at the same place where this went down: On the subject of Pyrite. Here's my obligatory pict of Trizzy. Why not? Everyone else is posting on A-trak, so here's my go.... Dust and I bumped into him the other morning coming back from Idaho looking for our bags at La Guardia... complete baggage debacle! In Fact, our whole trip back from Idaho was a debacle. layovers....
But Idaho was great (thnx Scion). Too much fun hangin out and rafting with the other tastemakers.
Not to mention, flying across country in a Gulf Stream is never a bad look... Being stuck in Chicago... this one goes out to the one Strug Rock...

To stay in the mood of the Madlib release and party last night at the LA store, I thought I'll post something on the Big Bad City. That's right, the one and only: Mumbai a.k.a. Bombay, the schizophrenic city with 2 names which is more prolific than any other at the moment. Not only does it produce more movies than LA, it also ridicules New York's reputation for being a rude city (This is not me saying it but the very respectable "Reader's Digest", quoted in wikipedia.) To put things in context, Mumbai is India's most populated city and the country's financial and commercial capital. As you might have heard, China and India are the new giant players in the global game. Both countries are growing and urbanizing at unprecedented rates. While political dictatorship (to call things by their name) in China allows bureaucrats to tear down old neighborhoods, plan new cities and redevelop existing ones without having to deal with local opposition, things are a bit more messy in India. Despite being notoriously corrupt, India has a lively democracy that could well serve as an inspiration to other countries (including some pretending to democratize the world by dropping bombs on it). True, Indians elect Bollywood stars to high political positions once in a while and that might look a little immature, but then again the richest state in the US has the Governator. So much for politics. Here are a few shots from recent urbanological expeditions in Mumbai, starting with images of Dharavi, a 500 acres informal settlement in the heart of the city. Probably the most densely populated area in the world. Just to give you an idea, the population density of Dharavi is 4 to 6 times higher than that of daytime Manhattan.
In order to keep up with the massive influx of immigrants from rural areas to the city many things have been tried. Ghandi said let's help people where they are, in the countryside so they don't have to come to the city and live in slums. Some has been done but not enough to stop people from pouring in. Others like the self-styled nationalist Hindu leader Bal Thackeray believe that "Sons of the Soil" deserve more rights than those who are not from Mahashtra (Mumbai's state). This ideology mainly resulted in inciting ruthless violence against Muslims communities, some of which have been in Mumbai since before it was called Bombay by the Portuguese.
Taking it in their own hands urban planners started using their calculators and aggregating numbers. "The city needs mass housing" they said. "Let us build many high-rise concrete housing buildings!" (Yes the same kind that failed miserably all over the US and Europe -ever been to East New York?) Developers could not agree more. People need high-rise. So they built them on the edges of the city. Here are few shots from New Bombay and Mira Road.
And as a special bonus, here is a short video of a crowded commuter train. No doors, no mercy. People are often singing together. Imagine that in New York subways? At the end of the movie you can hear the voice of ttl idol Frogman, saying he wants some more. More images and texts on Mumbai here.

thanks to dj bozack for pointing out that the dude IXL is battling is actually Infamous... good thing this isn't 1999 or I would have gotten slaughtered on some message board, perhaps an Alias post... ha-ha... anyway bozack also gave me some info on the allies for those who care: "develop is making beats for juelz and i think infamous was in an all acoustic band (hisself on guitar) based outta miami (pronounced me-am-me)..." one more observation: what's up the philipino dudes always in the background of DJ videos? that's some weird hierarchal shit, you rarely see white dudes on stage... always a phlip with a 6 panel cap, sitting on a speaker (or a nerdy black dude)... i think the big dude with the glasses in IXL video is especially classic... he adds so much too the performance... especially his "i just peeed my pants look..."

Dudes. This new Fog album is serious. You might have seen this Minneapolis musical powerhouse performing in your city, mistakenly booked on electronic blip-hop night with some random space rapp group opening up, or you might have picked up the first CD of experimental turntable-driven indie rock and then completely crossed them out of your musical radar zone. Well it's time to revisit these dudes. They've ditched the turntables and are now coming the fuck with it in a full-steam-ahead rock trio format. Guitar + drums + bass + hella effects + awesome song writing + psychedelic darkness + garage rock mayhem. Waste some time here. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Unrelated: If you're up in the Austin TX area, come say what up this week.

I just got back from a weeklong cruise with my extended family, going from Alaska to Canada. If you have never been on a cruise let me just say that it is very entertaining as well as slightly depressing. It's basically an old-people haven, and all the activities correspond accordingly: shuffleboard, mini-golf, hot-tub, karaoke-contests, wine with every meal, etc. The highlight, however, is the fact that there are on-board artists who peddle their schlock to middle-american families who literally don't know any better. Here is just a small taste of the geniusness on-sale: What's this piece that features a kid picking his nose while staring at breasts? Why, it's Young Art Critic, with a starting price of a mere $10,000? I was going to buy a new iMac but you offer a persuasive argument, Barry Leighton Jones! Let's walk a bit further shall we? Here is a controversial piece featuring grapes swimming in wine, then coming out to take a breathalyser from a cop. Someone's been reading my dream book!! But of course I've been saving the summum bonum of high art for last. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you JIM FUCKING WARREN. Already considered a "living legend in the art world," Jim's impressive oeuvre features such recurring themes as Amazonian women, avalanches of snow turning into galloping horses, simultaneously erupting volcanoes, and of course cloud-people who are in love. Here is an exciting piece in which a woman's hair is also a waterfall! Or how can we forget this devastating masterpiece, in which a 100' tall woman emerges from the sea, while the smoke from a smoldering volcano becomes not one but EIGHT giant bald eagles? And no discussion of Jim Warren's genius is complete without his greatest hit, Romantic Day. Is your mind intact, dear reader? It may not be by the time you finish viewing this: The attentive art critic may have noticed the following: *two lovers walking hand-in-hand into the ocean If you are disgusted, gentle reader, look away. However, if you are ready to gaze unblinkingly into the unstoppable powerforce of the FUTURE ITSELF, you can view Jim's website. Make sure your speakers are on, or you might miss the sound of the whinnying horses that accompanies the page loading!

i thought i needed to buy new clothes. it's been a year since i've clocked in at the Lab, and i recognize every single article of Tone Loc's clothing. it's been a little bit cuz i was upstate. got caught on the wrong side of a situation and had to go away for a little while. All i'll say is, jail's not as bad as Sizzle made it out to be. i'm ok now though. been out for a few months. to celebrate, i took a vacation. on my vacation, i flew through Reyjavik. i took a picture that i feel captures both joy and irreverence. largely irreverence. perhaps joy. please, enjoy it.
seriously tho. jail is not so bad.
this was written on the Berlin wall, the fragments that were still standing along the Spree River.
in Berlin, i ran into this guy Brian, who actually did a tattoo for me when he lived/worked in Brooklyn last year. We ran into him randomly on the street in Kreuzberg. He works at Fur Immer in Friedrichshain now. Such an awesome and talented dude.
i'd been waiting my whole life to see Iceland. i enjoyed the approach.
i saw Blu Jemz on the street in Brooklyn near his dad's house last week. Same old Blu Jemz. i hadn't seen him in so long. Man, was he a sight for sore eyes. Keep it moving, papi.

For being two dudes from Canada, Chromeo's first album had some cuts that perked the attention of the West Coast pop lock/ Boogie genes in my blood. She's In Control had packaging that was elegant, subtle, and gave off a classy vibe. Just look at the perfect retro airbrushing a la 80's grown & sexy albums. Nice.
But as I got closer I realized what was going on. But then I started to get scared. I started to get the hots for the sexy synth legs. What the hell is this feeling? Do I wanna spend my saturday with her? How would I make love to that thing? What will my parents think when I bring home a kinky keyboard?

so...its time for a little story about "urban exploration" in detroit... for those of you that aren't from the area or aren't detroit techno history elite, the packard plant is one of the oldest ford motor plants in detroit. they built a lot of the early engines there, made some ww1 engines for fighter planes, and, after it had long been abandoned (and its still abandoned - good job city of detroit!), its now home to some of the cities best graffiti (random photoset here / entertaining tour of the plant). well, after its rediscovery by smart rave promoters, it turned in to THE spot to have a party at. many of the cities most history events took place at the packard plant. you name it, it was there - and it was fucking awesome!!! anyway...apparently it is being used for other...umm..."interesting" activies when its not being bombed with spraypaint, hit up by explorers, or generally looking fucking ugly on the detroit skyline. enclosed is a set of photos that some friends took. basically...if you can't deduce it from their reduced sized...they stumbled upon a gay porn being shot involving superheroes. i'm going to let that sink in for a second... the packard plant...is now hosting video shoots...of gay porn involving superheroes...
*sigh* detroit...what have you done to yourself? hilariously enough...there's something jaw-droppingly funny about regular spiderman giving black spiderman a blowjob.

New Lab LA Radio episode posted... This month I enjoyed the company of... DJ ASSAULT Not only did he kill his DJ set with mad new shit, but when I started playing instrumentals to interview him over homeboy came with the crazy freestyle session! Thanks for keeping it real Mr. Diamonds and making those other 130 bpm rappers look like boarding school spring breakers. After the freestyle session came the interview, which we NPR'd to death with topics that ranged from beef with Detroit producers to his studio set-up. Really tho check his set... crack-a-lating!!! DARK ALLEY Hands down Dark Alley is one of my favorite dj's/nigga's in LA! We actually go back to the late 90's in Brooklyn when our girlfriends at the time introduced us to each other (i think he even came to one of my mom's infamous X-Mas parties). Homeboy is from Detroit (which is really the only other city besides NY i give props to if your from there) & he proved it with this nasty Shari-Vari style classics set that I still listen to almost every morning to help me face the world. If your in LA come to one of our Ass N' Titties parties, they're by far the best shit in a legal club out here (Ass N' Titties presents M.I.A. this past week was beyond off the meat rack). Always gotta put on some young folks and these two are some of my favs right now, plus they're in love. Gina works at the Lab out here, but her talent is only being wasted at the store. She's honestly one of the best ravathon/house dj's in LA right now (she absolutely murdered the Dafter Party). Dan-O does Tuesdays with Aoki and Them Jeans at Cine-Space. I'm not sure if I've ever heard a full set from him (I'm at Winston's on Tuesdays... game tight!), never mind tho cause it's really Dan's production that made me pay attention. I had to twist his arm to drop some of his own shit on this show, but I'm glad I did. Step up son!!! If your in LA i'm playing both Do-Over and Banana Split on Sunday and than I'm ghost till September so come thru!!!

Damn, C*dy you beat me to it. But building off that, Showbiz Pizza was the illest. For an 8ish year old young buck, there was nothing better than pizza, the Star Wars video game, and the animatronic puppets singing weird hillbilly animal versions of oldies bangers. I still have the 45 of the Rock-a-Fire Explosion covering "Do You Love Me" and Sam Cooke "We're Having a Party." I tried going to Chuck E Cheese like three years ago to try to relive a small percent of the magic and it was an utter disaster. All of the video games were just shitty Chuck E Cheese ticket games. The puppet shows were like 5 minutes long and had intermissions of Veggie Tales Christian cartoons. Do yourself a favor and just enjoy the memories.
