i thought the 100K note was diesel but...

"Zimbabwe is to start circulating a new 200,000 Zimbabwe dollar note, in a bid to tackle the country's inflation, the highest in the world.

The new note, issued by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe from Wednesday, can buy 1kg (2.2lb) of sugar.

The new note is worth US$13 at the official exchange rate or $1 on the black market."

what's the black market? is that where you find Indiana Jones?

The Secret Hangout Dance Party last friday was one to remember. Home Sweet Home added another speaker, we gave away two boxes of shirts and vinyl, the whole lab family showed up and the crowd was dedicated until past four and had to be ushered out. Huge shout to all those who came(you know who you are!). Superprops to Superfam's vinyl set, don't miss them at 205 Chrystie this Tues.

speaking of reading-lately all these dorks are invading the subway with harry potter fever. today i saw this "normal" guy and thought "normal people are ok, they make the world go round, let me do a quick sneaker check.. wait, let me guess, um maybe New Balance or maybe even flavor like Saucony." So I look at his shoes and hes wearing Sketchers. Ooooof.

So here it is Lab people - my first blog post ever!!
The pic below was taken in my Rave infancy (16 years old), the summer before I went away to Boston to college. This was some park in Pennsylvania at around6:30 am. For some reason, I always thought it was cool to take my drugs late in the party, so that when everyone else was coming down already, i was still goin up. The party we went to in NYC had gotten shut down at 5am, so i was FLYING the whole ride home. We stopped at this park to smoke, and ended up dancing next to the car for like 3 hours.
For all the criticism and shit Lab heads gave Ayres for his Rave mix, truth is, dude is a HUSTLER, and beat me to it. Mad respect due. I'm not saying mine is better, but I did feel he missed on some key Rave classics, and also never should have put the Justice song on there.
Anyway, these are the tracks I remember (vaguely) that were either big hits, played often, or some of my personal favorites to drop. Here's the tracklistig, plus a little story about each track. Oh yeah, this was recorded in one take, all with records. Funny how saying that now makes it more "keeping it Real". Whatever. I've already had 3 recurring nightmares about DJing with Serato...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

DJ SABO "Those Were The Days" (Old School Rave Mix)

01 "Give it Up" - The Good men
This was a huge track, and i heard a lot of DJs open thier sets with this one. At the time, i didn't even realize that all the drums samples were Brazilian. You can still play this and people go nuts.
02 "London Calling" - X-Press 2
These guys have been making records for decades. This one is pure RAVE HOUSE with the "raise your hands" sample and the siren. Classic.
03 "Bang the Box" - Basement Trax Vol 1
Big warehouse Chicago type track. Simple and powerful, just the word "Bang" repeated over and over.
DJ Osheen used to cane this one.
04. "In the Dark We Live" - Aphrohead aka Felix the Housecat
That's right, the father of electroclash, used to make good records. This one was really big, super drugged out and dark, hence the name.
05. "Drugs Work" - System 01
This is straight techno, from some Berlin/Tresor comp, but it was on one of the first "rave" mixtapes i ever had, so i had to include it. The message is clear and so appropriate. I'm also pretty psyched how the next track mixes out it.
06. "Higher State of Conciousness" - Wink
What can I say? Biggest rave song ever - hands down. I still cannot believe Ayres forgot this one on his mix.
I once heard Frank Ryde (Chocolate Factory) play this at an after party in New England, at some empty airport hanger. It was probably 10am, 2000 kids still going strong, high as can be. When the big acid build up came in, the whole sound system blew. That's it. Party Over. I think I had just dropped my 4th E. That was one hell of a sketchy ride home. 2 weeks later I blew another sound system at a loft party in Boston, at exactly the same moment in the track. That's some shit.
07. "To a Nation Rockin" Xpando
This label was owned by Eric Davenport, and definately established the West Coast breaks sound. This one is pressed on orange vinyl, and definately an "E" track. Those long space like stab sounds would go right thru your spine on a good system. It always mixed perfectly with Wink's track. In the story about Frank Ryde before, he played this one first, and then mixed in the Wink anthem.
08. "Ramjac" Massif
This was one of the most sought after rave tracks ever. Extremely rare, and oh so funky. This was another one of those "make you lose your shit" tracks. With the cricket noises, digeree-doo samples, the super slow hip-hop breakdown, and dude going "It's this joy that i'm feelin, i'm on planet E". Big up to Eamon for letting me borrow this one. He recently found a copy on Ebay for $25.
09. "A1 is a Superstar" Bassbin Twins
Bassbin Twins classic. These guys were waaaay ahead of their time production-wise. This is one of their bigger tracks, and it doesn't get more ravy than this. Big acid buildups were the shit. I remember having a DJ Tony (SF) mixtape that had this track on it, and he blended the (see next track) acapella "I feeeeeeel it" over top. Too sick.
10. "Hardcore Heaven" DJ Seduction
UK hardcore before it got too fast, and un-dance-able to. Gotta love that NYC Peech Boys sample, so perfect. Also, i think this is the only track on here that Pitts thinks is worthy-enough for a rave mix. Glad i got the stamp of approval bro!!
11. "Viva House" Me and Jack
One of my all time favorite feel good E records. The trumpet breakdown was so epic, and the bassline so thick. DJ Dale Charles used to kill this one.
12. "MotherEarth" Dubtribe
These guys put out mad records, all of them good. This one definately captures there "rave" period to its fullest though. People used to bug out on Sunshine's spoken word part, and then when the sirens kick in - forget about it. I heard them do this track live once in NYC at a rave called "Essense". On a side-note, DJ Spun (current labehead of Rong Music) was also on the bill that night. I probably heard this one 100's of times back in the day.
13. "Trip Harder" Ultraviolet Catastrophe
Another rare joint off Twitch records from San Francisco. Pressed on purple vinyl, this one has crazy drum solos over heavy 808 beats. Gotta love the title too.
14. "Listen to the Drummer" Nation 12
Super funky breaks record with tons of dope hip hop samples that many little crackheads would try to train spot me on. Good luck finding a copy of this one now.
15. "Shaken not Stirred" Dj Who vs The Bassbin Twins
Bassbin Twins vs. dj Who collaboration, with a really dope sample from "The Who" appropriately enough. Not sure how big or popular this track was, but i really like it, and played it quite a bit back then.
16. "Rhythm Annihilator" ?
No idea who did this, as I got a white label re-press of it. DJ Dan used to play this one a lot. That's right, DJ Dan, the gay dude who plays really bad progressive shit now. He used to KILL it at raves. He was the first DJ i heard scratch on a big sound system too. In retrospect, he couldn't really cut for shit, but this was before in even knew about turntablism or anything, so i was impressed. Plus i think he wanted me as his boy-toy, because one time i requested this song, and after he said "he'd played it just for me". I proceeded to get kinda freaked out.
17. "Energy Traxx Vol. 1 - DJ ICEE
DJ ICEE kinda gets a bad rap now, but when this record came out, it blew people away. This was the first ICEE record ever, and it was a 4 track white label bootleg. It was pretty rare, until it got re-pressed a few years later, but still not easy to find. You can't have a rave mix without at least one song from this dude. He started a whole rave movement down south, for better or for worse, called "Orlando Breaks" in the mid 90's. After about his 5th release, they all started to sound the same, but he was a cool guy. I opened up for him once in Boston, and he was mad humble.
18. "Chemical Beats" Dust Brothers EP
The first Chemical Brothers record, before they were called Chemical Brothers. Need i say classic? I remember this came out the same week as "Energy Traxx 1" and i was floored. It was a very exciting time for Rave Music then.
19. "Watch Me Now" - GrooveYard
I remember getting this priceless piece of blue vinyl before all my other DJ friends. I played it at a house party in Vermont - i think. We had the DJ booth set up in the kitchen, and everyone was in the living room getting faded and dancing. All 3 of my homies then - Rob Paine, O'Keefe, and Jon Gunshor- came running into the kitchen like "What the FUCK is that?!?!?" It was a proud DJ moment for me, knowing i had some shit before anyone else. A month later we went to a huge rave called Baby Blue, and Doc Martin rocked doubles of this record, teasing all 3000 kids for like 15 minutes until he let Jimmy Castor's vocals come in. The crowd went absolutely ballistic.
20. "U Got Me Up" - Cajmere
Yes I know, this is Chicago House. Whatever. This track for the longest time was known simply as the "Horn Song" by many people. It was a huge huge hit, when i first started coming to parties in NYC. Its also one of the first records i bought, when i knew i wanted to be a DJ. I recently heard Small Change play this out, and it made my week.
21. "Celtic Cross (Bangin Bass mix)" Ian Pooley
This was some hard NY house shit. I remember hearing this one at Tunnel the week it came out. Just simple 4 on the floor and banging hard. Perfect for a dark warehouse. Also pressed on crazy color swirled vinyl.

22. "Energy Flash" - Joey Beltram

Big big techno track, and supposedly the first song to ever say "Ecstasy" in the track. Admittedly, i never owned this one back in the day, and just recently bought a repress online. Good to know tracks like these have not been forgotten, and are still attainable.
23. "Believe This" - Johnny Viscious
Probably the only Johnny Viscious track i've ever liked, but it was a such a floor killer. This was another Osheen secret weapon. When the "Peter Piper" breakdown came in, people wents bananas.
24. "High Up" Funky Green Dogs From Outer Space
Murk just put out a "best of" type EP that we carry at the Lab. Thankfully this track was not on there. I cannot believe i gave that hint away just now! You could easily put this in my top 5 E records ever. Such an amazing piece of wax. I still get goose bumps every time i hear this.
25. "Plastic Dreams" - Jay Dee
This was my original import pressing copy, which I "aquired" from this gay house DJ Jesse, who was living on my friends coach in Boston, until they kicked him out for not paying rent. I got a lot of dope records from that guy actually...Anyway, from the number of clicks and pops in the recording you can tell that this got A LOT of rotation back then. Another all time classic, which should never be remixed. Its just too good as is. Sorry Switch...
26. "Dreams on Plastic" - Frankie Bones
I take it back. This is the only other remix of Plastic Dreams that should be played. The godfather of Techno's funky as hell miami bass rework. Good luck finding this one though...super rare.
27. "Untitled" - Bassbin Twins EP 01
The first white label put out by the infamous Bassbin Twins. Crazy sampling and incredible production. I only let it play for a minute but the full track is amazing, with a breakdown midway through with the Beatles sample "here comes the sun, little darling..." It was perfect for the 6am sunrise set.
28. "Bombscare (94 remix)" - 2 Bad Mice
Can't have a rave mix without at least one track by these guys. This is a later remix of the original UK rave hit. These guys were also on some shit with the production and sampling. Could be the first big song to steal the Jungle Brothers "I'll House You" lyrics as well.
29. "Compnded" - Edge Records 01
As far as I know, this is a pretty unknown track, except for maybe the catchy rave noise in the breakdown, but i though it was important because its the first release on this label. Edge Records put out tons of techno and breaks over the years, and i think they are still putting some joints out today.
30. "Feel The Bass" - Bass City Rollers
I picked this one up a little later (late 90's) on a one-sided white label. I know nothing about it, other than its too damn funky. Kinda wish i had this one back in the day, because it would have destroyed people.
31. "Eternal #2" - Zone
I first heard this one on one of those "This Is Techno" cassette compilations. Gotta love that Rakim sample they used. Frank Ryde played this on New Year's once in Baltimore at a huge 5000+ party. There was this one kid there who had taken like 30 hits of acid. He was naked rolling around on the dirty wet floor screaming "I'm Jesus, I'm Jesus". I've always wondered what happened to that kid...?
32. "Jump to My Beat" - Wildchild Experience
This is just pure funky house shit, with the vocal samples going "can u feel the beat" and then coming in with that PE / Justify My Love drum break. I still play this today and people trainspot it.
33. "Circus Bells" - Robert Armani
This track definately represents the dark druggy era of raving. I can remember being at an after party -at some skatepark in Albany I believe. It was probably 12 noon, and my friends and I were all hanging in parking lot, basically pushing the limits of how much more drugs are bodies could take. I had to take a piss, so I went back into the warehouse -which was actually a skatepark - to go to the bathroom. I remember there was STILL about 50 super trippin kids dancing, and the DJ was playing this song. I already owned the record and remember telling myself in my own sleep-deprived, drug-induced state, don't ever play Circus Bells again, its waaay to tripped out. On that note, I thought i'd end the mix with this incredible slice of acid house insanity.

Also finally got our Scion show up and running. The first show was even more out of control than any of my Authentic Shit episodes, with GASLAMP KILLER dropping a guest set and an hour long freestyle rap cipher from BLU, MESTIZO & SUBCON (if you haven't heard my only concern right now is bringing rap back). Check next month for the freestyle session with DJ ASSAULT .

I'm opening for Ghostface all week. It's kind of weird because I don't play any dirty south hip-hop, house, club, 80s or whatever else I'm used to playing, but I've been having fun with real schitt hip-hop and classic soul and reggae. It's pretty awesome getting a room full of backpackers to sing along to Gloria Jones "Tainted Love."

Ghost at Highline Ballroom in NY, photo by Ian Meyer (more pictures here).

Cappadonna kills it with those long breathless verses from Winter Wars and Daytona 500. When he's 48 bars in and still going the crowd just loses it.

Rhythm Roots Allstars unloading from the bus. These dudes kill it live, staying faithful to the original Ghostface instrumentals and freaking shit like Nautilus, No No No and La La Means I Love You. The old guy is our bus driver; he's normally the driver for Good Charlotte.

My bunk on the bus is the size of a coffin but has its own DVD / CD / radio player. Scion puts us up in four star hotels but we don't even sleep there. To get from St Louis to Minneapolis for example we had to leave at like 3 AM so the hotel was just a really expensive place to shower and change clothes after the show.

Mike the 2600 King showed me around Minneapolis and took me to the Burlesque Design studios.

Wezz and Mike were printing MF Doom posters.

so eli and i spun opening sets for the mia show last night. great music was played as most of the crowd stared at the stage waiting for jesus to appear.

as the tempos were upped , some people realized it might be funner to dance while waiting for moses

i walked around trying to get a feel for the type of people who sold out this show in 3 hours flat

trekkies? alterna-preps? youngsters? i'm guessing the average age in the crowd was 22... so i can't say my usual "all these people used to listen to dave matthews" (i'll leave that for the fixed gear crowd). SO, i can't hate on the crowd, they were actually kind of smart & sophisticated, and came to have fun.

normally I'd be pissed as hell, but when i heard that this victory (first time the country has advanced to the finals) lifted the spirts of the otherwise w-fucked Irag public, I didn't feel so bad... I didn't even feel bad when they accidently killed 3 people (wounded 19) when they were letting off victory shots from their russian rifles...

I'm actually rooting for them now. people were reported to be celebrating in the streets etc... good for them... however, some crazy Iraqis had to go ruin the celebration and ignite bombs in the celebrations... over 50 dead, over 150 hurt... i don't normally comment on political issues, but this is RUTHLESS and just fucked in general... Oxford Comma by Vampire Weekend

In eighth grade we had a debate about cochlear implants, the device that allows some deaf people to hear. Should parents, deaf or not, give this to their deaf children? I was assigned the point of view that you should encourage people to do this. Kara, a girl on the other side of the debate, began a small rant about deaf culture and the obstruction of this. I said something like “What’s so important about culture?” I didn’t think that one through. Having a similar conversation in a college class about authenticity, a white girl who’d spent a good deal of time in Africa asked the hypothetical question “When is it okay to be interested in other people’s culture and when is it not? I like Africa but I’m far from African. What do I do with that?” I wonder if Vampire Weekend had this kind of discussion up in Morningside Heights. They play African guitar. Bob Bannister said he hopes their van crashes. Brian, the Fulbright scholar who studied Ghanaian music wouldn’t go to their show with me. Maybe because I’ve spent every summer vacationing in Cape Cod I feel a kinship with them. And, hey, I know about Africa! I took a class on Ngugi Wa Thiong-o! I’m up on the uprising in Guinea! I cry when I listen to Boubacar Traore! Do I get a pass to listen to this? Do they get a pass to make it? Why does it pain me to think about this? (Why do I miss college so much?) Really, though, I have nothing vested in authenticity so I’m just happy to listen to the little part of this song where he says ‘Why would you lie about something dumb like that?/Why would you lie about anything at all?” because it’s pretty and plain and whatever it is, that’s not a bad thing to aspire to.

Portugal Rua Rua by Glissandro 70

The cover of this record is a colored paper remake of a West End sleeve. The album is called End West. No one cared about this record. This song co-opts the chant from No UFOs. Do you think that’s okay? Because they’re Canadian.

so yeah, i'm guilty too, (but give me a segway and i'll at least try to jump ramps on it).

WEHEARTPOSTER_16x20.jpg

FRI. 7/13/07 (9:30pm; $3 (limited), $10)
The Empty Bottle, Struggle Inc & Turntable Lab present We (heart) Chicago featuring:
Gravy Train!!!! label: Spam, Cochon, Gimme Gravy Train, KRS
The Cool Kids label: C.A.K.E Recordings
Gutter Butter DJs label: Dooka related: Logan Bay, Ben Fasman
Join us for the first evening of the three day We (heart) Chicago festival. Curated as parties first and shows second, the event features nine bands, deejays and emcees that we've brought in specific to the event, the sorta folks that know how to rock a room…and keep it rocking, in a way Chicagoans expect and one that can only be expected of a hard-partying city like Chicago. Queercore four-piece GRAVY TRAIN!!!! ably blend old school raps with theatrical new wave, creating a highly conceptualized fusion of danceparty madness that is truly their own. They’ll be playing material from new Cochon Records release All The Sweet Stuff. Local rap duo THE COOL KIDS is up on the reals, for sure. Their tracks have been hyped by Pitchfork and URB Magazine, among many others, and their steez – old school by-way-of new indie – is fully, fully on point. Making a great party better still, GUTTERBUTTER DJs LOGAN BAY and BEN FASMAN will spin throughout. In response to IPods and MP3s, the two felt compelled to return to “two turntables, drunk cut mixing and balls-to-the-walls live blends.” They’ll be playin’ them raw gully shits, yo!

SAT. 7/14/07 (9:30pm; $3 (limited), $12)
The Empty Bottle, Struggle Inc & Turntable Lab present We (heart) Chicago featuring:
Chromeo label: Turbo, Vice
Flosstradamus label: Koko B. Ware related: Kid Sister
Vyle label: B.E.A.R., iheartcomix, Trouble and Bass related: Nacrobats
Synth pop revisionists CHROMEO compose “slick-ass lover’s funk” a sound thoroughly in evidence on their two releases, She’s In Control and Fancy Footwork. Spin has called their sound “addictive,” Alternative Press “perfect” and they’ve prompted the always-overwhelmed NME to wonder, “How can something so wrong be so right?” Hometown deejay phenoms FLOSSTRADAMUS take the night off from owning the world, to spin throughout here. The two are pure fire these days, crisscrossing the globe to bring that dance floor heat, a style that the Reader claims is such that it attracts folks that would never be caught in the “bourgeois environs of a club club.” We can’t figure a night that’ll get much hotter, no doubt.

SUN. 7/15/07 (9:30pm; $3 (limited), $10)
The Empty Bottle, Struggle Inc & Turntable Lab present We (heart) Chicago featuring:
My!Gay!Husband!
Yo! Majesty label: Out There
Mahjongg label: Cold Crush, K related: Bobby Conn, Waterbabies
‘Punkpartykid’ MY!GAY!HUSBAND! will spin throughout here, a deejay known in underground clubs the world over for his trashy mashups and mixes. M!G!H! has spun alongside all the major indies – everyone from DJ ASSUALT, HOLLERTRONIX, INTERPOL and MSTKRFT, to name but a few – and his talents have earned him invites from most of the world’s major cities. This’ll be his Empty Bottle debut. And what can we say about YO! MAJESTY? Can them shits be any, any hotter? Vice has called their sound “absolutely timeless” and “brilliant,” while Mixmag has acclaimed, “At last – punk-funk-crunk rap!” This has to be, we’re telling you, one of our most anticipated sets of the year. Notable locals MAHJONGG will open, a sprawling, free form quintet concerned with ‘fusing sensuous beats with brittle Casio keyboards tones, committing tunes to tape with lo-fi ‘techniques’ that instantly imbue them with bleeding-edge currency.” The group will be previewing material from a forthcoming K Records release.

Quite a long weekend. It started Friday night at Studio B with Chromeo... the place was rammed packed and my attention was totally scattered between sweating too much, watching Dave and Pee kill it and waiting 20 mins to get a cocktail... I spaced on taking any picts, sorry. So we left after they were done and dipped to APT to catch up with Egypt. He brought the peripherals this time around, 808, vocoder. Here he is with my man Justin, as PH mentioned, who is setting that schedule board up real nice.

egypt.JPG

Following day Jen Lyon, Doug from Downtown Records and myself hosted a little BBQ on the Gowanus Canal. Unemployed Lloyd came though and was spittin crazy game on Queen Majesty all afternoon. uh, she was definitely into it...

everyone's new favorite superstar came through.

Quote of the day "you got to finesse the pinesse" – lloyd
(did you know he has a blog now?!)

The owner of the spot had a little speed boat, and Jen convinced Doug, his wife Amy, Lloyd and myself to get on it. I thought it was gonna be a slow cruise around the Canal. I was mistaken.

canal 1.JPG

We got on, and the captain, who was burning a huge spliff, turned around and told everyone to "hold on."

canal2.JPG

Of course, everyone fell over when he leaned on the gas... except his kid, who wasn't sweatin a damn thing. Lloyd almost spilt his beer.

Swear to god, we all thought we were gonna die. He was racing around the canals like a speeder bike on the Forest Moon of Endor. I nearly went overboard about 6 times and came close to losing my head twice on low overpasses.

We made it out to the harbor where it was mellow...

gay pict.JPG

...and here's an extremely gay pict of Doug and myself.

capt.JPG

The Captain was hilarious! Aside from almost killing us, we got stuck in the harbor. He managed to jimmy the engine back on with a little duct tape and pouring some beer into the carborator. Always laughing, he was...

...and the Pulitzer Prize Winning shot of the afternoon.
More parties like this, this summer. I highly recommend the Canal Cruiser...

the trans-borough, reverse commute is the best... the bike path along the manhattan bridge...

july-nico.jpg
after work, we took part in an epic, continuous 4 hour pick up game... nico was making some interesting observations about how this was basically one long game, but the people changed multiple times, the style changed... and it kept going after we left. when i joined it was like 15 v 15 mass chaos, by the time I left it was a streamlined 8 v 8, complete with practice jerseys someone brought to the field....

july-salvation.jpg
had some time to kill on saturday, so i wandered the streets looking for some old book shops or junk stores... but they don't really exist anymore. the city is in full gentrification mode, banks on every corner, and small fringe stores going out of business... so I had to trek to the Salvation Army on 23rd to get my fix (a terrible thrift store btw, it's in a basement! no windows!)

july-salvation-2.jpg
always amazed at the mish-mosh you'll find at the Salvation Army...

unsolved mystery, i always wondered who the fuk buys underwear here...

my only score of the day was this 1966 issue of Venture...
never seen this travel mag before, but it was filled with excellent design and illustrations

later that night, headed to APT to check Dennis Kane...
checkout APT's schedule, it reads like a lab bestseller list...
also got to love the tranny that works the door there,
they have the most abstract, amorphous door policy in the world...
july-apt.jpg

july-puke.jpg
on the way home, i saw this cab pull-over right in front of me... the back door opened, a girl leaned out the door, started puking... then she fell out of the cab into her puke and rolled around in it, before her friend pulled her up... at which point, i was like "this would be cool for the blog..."

I had the rare opportunity to see the one and only Prince perform at Minneapolis' First Avenue last night. After playing at Macy's for his perfume release party (file under: get on my level) and then at the Target Center (home of the T'wolves), the purple one headed across the street to the 1600 person capacity venue featured in "Purple Rain" to play a last minute afterparty. It was his first time playing First Avenue in about 20 years and everyone was beyond stoked. People were camped out for a solid day or so waiting for tickets, but here's how I got mine:

(phone call #1)
Dude: Hey, I have kind of a weird request
Me: What's up?
Dude: Can you bring your Serato box to First Avenue?
Me: Uhhhh, maybe, why? Who needs it?
Dude: The DJ opening up for Prince
Me: Can you get me into the show?
Dude: Let me check ... No, but they can get you some cash.
Me: Ehhhh, sorry man.

(phone call #2)
Dude: They can come pick up the box from you and give you $50.
Me: I'd still have to leave where I am now to get it and I gotta meet some friends. Sorry.

(phone call #3)
Dude: Okay, then can get you into the show.
Me: I'm out the door.

Got in and waited for one hour while the crew set up on stage. We were 8 rows back. First Ave was getting really uncomfortably packed and it was dumb hot in there, but Prince's DJ was kinda really killin' it. He finally took the stage at 2:45AM and went right into "3121."

Sorry for the crappy photos - all I had was my cell phone camera.

Prince doin' the damn thing with Sheila Fucking E.

They did "I Feel For You" and then went right into "Controversy."

Purple.

Dude. Prince's bassist is Larry Fucking Graham. They did a grip of Sly covers which were pretty on the money.

So right around 3:30, some guy who looked like the Monopoly guy tugged on Sheila E's sleeve from the side of the stage, which I guess was the cue to stop the show. No "Let's Go Crazy," no "When Doves Cry," no "Erotic City," no "I Wanna Be Your Lover," and no "Purple Rain," but it was still some shit for the history books.

shack_Matias_Echanove400.jpg

Tokyo is the largest city of the world, yet it works like a Swiss village. It is the city of future with earthquake-proof fancy architecture, yet as soon as you get lost in the small residential streets you see shack-like housing. Tokyo is a fascinating animal. Residential development was largely left to local actors after the war (when Tokyo was flattened by US firebombs). The government focused instead on infrastructure development (roads, rails, water, electricity). As a result Tokyo grew incrementally from being a giant slum to being the hyper-modern city it is today. These are some shots from downtown Tokyo. I love this slum-type architecture which requires constant care and upgrading from the residents. Tokyo is very much an organic city, not a city that was planned from the top-down. And that's what makes it so great. More pictures and text in my blog.

favela_Matias_Echanove400.jpg
This is not Brazil!

cabana_Matias_Echanove400.jpg
Traditional architecture or slum-type house? And what's the different anyways?

woodshop_Matias_Echanove400.jpg
Need to repair your house? No problem you can get everything you need at the local wood shop.

sento_Matias_Echanove400.jpg
This is a "sento", public bath. They can still be found in most residential neighborhoods in Tokyo and are very popular. Although it is becoming rarer, some apartments still don't have shower. My kitchen sink doesn't have hot water (got a shower though!)

This is the type of things that you cannot find in guides, because to see it you have to get lost. However, if you are in Tokyo for a few days and are looking for an alternative to Lonely Planet, you can check out this guide I made. And if you are interested in seeing some fancy, high-end architecture in Tokyo you can download this architectural guide I complied recently.
