My MP3s A-Z

Go Crazy by Young Jeezy (featuring Jay-Z)

I first heard this song at my sister’s house in Vermont in the summer. It had Fat Joe on a verse. That got taken off. This is the song I have listened to most of all songs I’ve ever listened to. If my parents were home I would call them, ask them to go look at the computer and tell me how many times iTunes says I have listened to it. I will guess two hundred. After I graduated college I didn’t do anything and then my lease ran up and I moved to my parents house and sulked and looked for a job. I sat in the moldy basement where the new computer was and listened to this over and over and sent resumes to jobs I didn’t want and didn’t get. It was a rough twenty-third birthday that year. I remember I heard this in my grandmother’s car stuck in traffic driving back from the train station in New Haven coming back from an interview in the city. It was the first time I really listened to the lyrics. “I’m emotional; I hug the block/I’m so emotional; I love my glock.” Young Jeezy was using semi-colons. I missed college. I was jealous of my sister for having learning disabilities in math and foreign languages and getting five years to graduate.

Hustlin' by Rick Ross

God, Rick Ross is so fat. His eyes look like those goggles you wear when you go tanning so your eyes don’t get hurt. That’s why he doesn’t take off his sunglasses. For three days last summer I drove around Cape Cod in a white BMW listening to this song.

it's hard to believe that the LA store has been around for a year now (it's close to 1.5 actually)... we are throwing 2 events on back to back weekends to thank everyone that made it happen...

the stars have truly aligned for these events...
First up, Wes and Mike are going to make a rare appearance as Hollertronix at The Echo. This is pretty significant in Lab history as the Hollertronix crew definitely helped the Lab become what it is today. Money Studies put out the first Hollertronix CD back in 2003... and here are some pics from their first Hollertronix party we helped throw in NYC (Roxy was in it too)...

"it's like a jungle sometimes... it makes me wonder..."

the first Chinese panda released into the wild after being bred in captivity has died, Chinese media has announced.

Xiang Xiang was released in April 2006 from the Wolong Giant Panda Research Centre and was said to be adjusting well to his new life.

But the five-year-old was found dead in February. Officials said his death was likely due to a fight with wild pandas.

Xiang Xiang's death is a set back for China's efforts to increase the number of giant pandas in the wild.

Giant pandas are one of the world's most endangered species. Only about 1,600 remain in the wild, with another 200 living in captivity.

This goes out to shipset B Ball captain P- Gorgeous. last week he celebrated a birthday, so myself, T kat, and Young Derty decided to check out P in his own element.. That would be on the lower east side playing bike polo. For those that don't know my man P he's like ringer weekend warrior athlete and very competitive. check out the clip below

Watch that elbow son!!!!!

On our usual trip to San loco we realize we happen to be in the neighborhood of our good friend Dr. Pitts. Seeing his bike locked up on the street, young derty and myself suddenly got the bright idea that we should steal his bike seat but we never followed through..... When we let our good friend P in on our idea he had to get em!!!! Plus the bike is a loaner from p gorgeous so it was only right...

My MP3s A-Z

Erode the Person by Noothgrush

I was penpals with.Chiyo, this band’s drummer. Their songs were about hating yourself; it was cool. Chiyo owned a thrift store, maybe two thrift stores, and mailed me a Noothgrush hooded sweatshirt and t-shirt she’d screened on her own inventory. I wore my hair long then, Jewish curls, and I hated to get it cut but my mother would force me. After it had been a while and I looked fairly mopish my mother dragged me to West Hartford for a trim. Before it happened, though, I made her take a picture of me, tween pride at the longest my hair had ever been. I still have the picture – I’m wearing the sweatshirt and khaki pants. I looked bad. Sometimes I wonder why no one ever told me I looked bad and then I remember that they did.

Freshdog Madjive Chronicles by DJ Harvey

This is some light rock mix I downloaded and never listened to. Why do people like this? I saw Harvey play at Love on Saturday it was great. He didn’t play this. There were old people breakdancing that should thank their joints for cooperating for so long. There were tall pretty people that danced and held hands, the girl doing door in weird creepers and fishnets who somehow quit her job and just danced the entire time. I was tired, fell asleep and spilled beer on myself. I like that, it’s comforting. I didn’t know any of the songs, didn’t care. Early in the night everything was slow and almost scary. Love is a dark club, friendly but encasing; seventy BPM and a Gladys Knight protégé feels like really sweaty overweight people hugging you. I’m a good dancer, so I made it last. Bogdan showed up at 4:30, not long after the fifteen minute Love Money marathon and not long before I left. My friend was going to give us all a ride but when he said he was parked by Bleeker and started walking the wrong way I got in a cab. During the drive I listened to Bruce Springsteen on my iPod because it’s tiny and I keep it in my shirt pocket.

The Blog's on FIRE! Kudos for the Allison Stokke post, I think all of America caught on to her literally in the last 24 hours. I just think the girl got lucky, all the planets aligned for a split second, and out came one of the hottest photos in awhile. Her other pictures dont come close to that one, much like my brother's (PH) pathetic excuse for a mid-range jumper to mine, nor like his guitar lead of "Killing In The Name Of" in guitar hero II to mine. Anyways, in going with the hot news of the last 24 hrs, you gotta see the hottest American woman representing us well in the 2007 Miss Universe pageant. Side note, google the winner, Ms. Japan. Shes pretty en fuego as well.

An 11-year-old Alabama boy used a pistol to kill a wild hog that just may be the biggest pig ever found.

Jamison Stone's father says the hog his son killed weighed a 1,051 pounds and measured 9-feet-4 from the tip of its snout to the base of its tail. Think hams as big as car tires.

If the claims are accurate, Jamison's trophy boar would be bigger than Hogzilla, the famed wild hog that grew to seemingly mythical proportions after being killed in south Georgia in 2004.

Hogzilla originally was thought to weigh 1,000 pounds and measure 12 feet in length. National Geographic experts who unearthed its remains believe the animal actually weighed about 800 pounds and was 8 feet long.

My MP3s A-Z

Condor Avenue by Elliott Smith

It’s boring in Connecticut, so in ninth grade I started playing Nintendo again. I got very good at Contra and didn’t even need the code to beat the game. I played Double Dribble for a while, Tecmo Super Bowl. I went out and bought a used gun to play Duck Hunt with, but bored of that, too. Then I dug up Transylvania III. Though I’ve never been interested in role playing, this ate least had ghosts and fireball things and you could switch into a guy that walked up walls and mostly it had a lot of levels and took a lot of time. I was listening to a lot of the Elliott Smith then and would play the game over and over, content and quest-like with the sound on mute and Elliott Smith. So now can’t hear this song without thinking about ghostships and the way my back would hurt from lack of support when I would sit hunched on the floor and stare at the TV in the room at my parents’ house.

ps dude sold more CDs than Justin Timberlake last week

Do They Owe Us a Living? (live) by Crass

For a little while I had a high school intern. He was a punk in both ways a teenager can be a punk. He showed up to his interview, ten million feet tall pimply kid with a spiked jacket and a Discharge patch. We hired him because he cost seven dollars a day and I am sick of looking at spreadsheets. It turned out that though he had never looked at spreadsheets he was already sick of it (though he did show me that if you hold the shift button down you can scroll to the right with the mouse wheel). Before he quit, though, I sat him down to have one good mentor/intern experience with him and explain how our contracts work and why there are territory rights. I talked about GISM, a Japanese hardcore band and bootlegging and selling on iTunes Europe and what an ISO code is and all kinds of things. He was even semi-interested, crossed his legs and looked thoughtful, though that was maybe for my benefit. Then we just started talking about Japanese hardcore. “I might look like a total herb but I know a thing or two about music,” I told him. I said “When I was in eighth grade my dad drove me to see the Business and they covered Do They Owe Us a Living. Isn’t that cool.” But he didn’t care, asked me if we could upload his band’s CD to iTunes. I told him he’d need a barcode and that we could go over how to do it but instead he ignored me and looked at Myspace.

My MP3s A-Z

Amba by 51717

This is my friend Lili. 51517 is Lili S. upside down. That’s her name. She’s about to go on tour with the Beastie Boys as a babysitter. Then I think she might move to Japan. She’s from Silver Spring and used to live in an apartment with a guy who had so many Cds there were Cds in the sink. The first or second time I met her we went to the zoo in DC, a long walk up Connecticut Avenue from my dorm. This song sounds like Lili, mysterious and vague. Whispered, too. It’s hard to understand her when she talks on the phone. She knows it, but it’s not going to change. I listened to this over and over one day last week, text messaged Lili how much I liked it while I crossed traffic on Flatbush. Some teenage girl stopped me and I pulled the headphone out of my ear. “Your glasses are cool,” she said. I thanked her, kept walking. Lili texted me back, told me she appreciated it.

Bathysphere by Smog

This is the first mp3 I ever bought. It sucks. I saw him play this live and it was better. This sounds like an indie rock Octoberfest. And Cat Power did it better. Still, I’m glad Bill Callahan will pocket his thirty-five cents from the sale. I like mp3s because they’re an empty medium. It must be disappointing to be a musician and have a CD be your final art product. CDs are ugly and tiny, plastic cases and leftover glue from topspines. An mp3 is just a conduit, infinitely reproducible and always exactly the same. I like that. It’s how I dress; interchangeably identical, nice, but forgettably plain. I like to think Bill Callahan feels the same way. We don't look dissimilar, either, maybe except that he's a little taller, more western. He’s such a vague looking person until he opens his mouth and then he sounds like a singing sloth. In one video he plays an anchorman announcing fire and brimstone while Chloe Sevingy cleans hotel rooms with an eye patch. He couldn’t care less about either. I don’t remember for sure, but I think he scratches his head, uninterested in everything but the sound of his own voice.

With all the bloggers becoming super-star djs nowadays, I've noticed the quality of the actual blogs slippin. Here's a couple no-one has bigged up yet...

OUTSIDE BROADCAST

This is my man Eli Escobar's shit. I've known homeboy since high school and he's always been one of those ahead of the game dudes. I don't wanna go thru a list of all his achievements but they include being in our high school's most popular hard core band, to producing for the majority of dope east coast underground rap dudes, to now making beats for Pase's new 12" and a Nelly Furtado remix with Stretch Armstrong (currently available on the blog). Honestly I didn't wanna post his blog cause the shit is just two sweet. Now you too can be in on todays biggest dj's secret weapon, DJ ELI ESCOBAR (also check for his gigs).

MIKE B. VS DICKIE G

In that same family of blogs is my boy Mike B. Brilly is one of the few DJ's in LA i'm shook to play next to. This guy's the total package, excellent song choice, high mixing and scratching aptitude and strong energy. If you do already happen to have the trax he posts you probably haven't ripped 'um yet, so give thanx!!! More people book this guy please!

MOONWALK RECORDS

Lastly most of you don't know that my partner Roger Yamaha has a site he started in Tokyo called Moonwalk Records. No reason to go shopping there unless you live in Asia. However the blog (even when in Japanese) is quit entertaining, with subjects like "Adventures of the Dirty Thirties.

If your in LA tomorrow come to Mike B's B-day bash! Even tho yours truly got jerked on flyer placement once again (whose name do you think is written inside the girls panties at these parties? Jemz! That's who Snitches!)

Probably one of my favorite ways to listen to instrumental music is just at the point where you are falling out of conciousneess into sleep, but not letting yourself fall fully asleep. so the words will have to suffice...

1)
last customer of the night yesterday
shout out to the gentleman in his late fifties and a funny suit, who bought a turntable, some of our nudie books, and 7 dollars worth of $1 hip-hop 12"s. he told me to pick em out for him, and I was hesitant on giving him "Thug Anthem," I told him it would make him go crazy, and he nodded approvingly. the capper was that he asked for the new vice mag, we said we had it, and he replied "score!"

2)
the girl from the bagel shop
this girl was literally one of the top 10 sexiest girls I've seen sober and not in a strip club. she looked and dressed like that middle eastern guess model. she had the entire bagel spot in confusion, all the girls were pissed, and all the dudes kept sneaking peeks with a mouthful of bagel. the power was ridiculous.

Shoutouts: Soem (Pocket Checkers on the way), Eleven (I'm gonna get you some of those Dwayne Wayne flip up jump-offs for your b-day), Cosmo (my brother from another cousin), Lloyd-Ski (the future of music part 1), Mark "i'm huge in London" Ronson, Daniel, Catchdubs, Mike from Nothing, Havoc (the cdj really wasn't working), Kim Laundry, Saucey, Louisa, Miles, Center, Monk (when it comes to dropin bombs I'm still with that!), Small ¢, Maggie, Stony (i'm not coping your Tercell), Snack & Commish (the next best thing out of 20 Jay), Alison (Dirty Trick, at least you know what it means to be from nyc), Sizzle, Shota, Telekenetic, new Lab Rats, Ayers (should've housed your laptop), Naeem (the future of music part 2), Rockwell (gotta get you some gigs out here), Trizzy & Stretch, Jules, Queen Majesty, Sylvia, Baj, Kenan, Ro, Mikey & Matty, Riggs (my new best-friend), Matt, John Brown (your a gentleman & a scholar, sorry i was routing for Shamrock), Weismann (seperate the man from the myth), Mekler, can't forget NACHO NEIL NICE! & all my fam. and IM OUT!

(i used to think blogging was gay, but in reality it's easier than making music and more satisfying than taking drugs. I'll just enjoy it while it lasts)

When I see this old school skate revival going on, I just laugh. Lemme introduce you to my roommate Pinto: The Master Of Skateboards! I've lived with him about 3 years now and I don't know anybody more crazy...
ericboards.jpg

He collects mad classic boards and rebuilds them with all original time specific gear: trucks, wheels, rails, tailbones, grip, etc... We have literally 50 complete decks in our little apartment at all times, AND its always growing. Here's the wild man himself.

Barcelona is probably the coolest city in Europe. It is a SHAME that the authorities "cleaned" the amazing graffitis that were covering up the city's walls. Ignorant fools in power did the same in NY in the 1990s. What a powerful expression of creativity and life it was when the trains were painted up by the best ghetto artists of the time. Why do they need art to be in a museum to appreciate it? Some of the greatest masterpiece of our generation were recently lost this way in Barcelona. Near the Center of Contemporary Culture (which is a famous skate spot) was a whole wall covered in graffiti. Through some interesting natural selection process only the most beautiful paintings would stay on while others were painted over. The City of Barcelona decided that white paint was more beautiful that anything else. What a loss! WHAT A SHAME! Now the only paintings you see are dirty style tags on shutters (somehow I like that too). Here are some photoshoped shots from a recent trip. I'll soon dig into my archives and post some of the photos I toke before the City erased all the good stuff.

I am officially a vinyl nerd again. Fuck you, CD singles and Limewire! I even went record shopping a little while ago with my Vestax portable turntable and shitty first record bag (which is similar to my first cel phone in that it is both gigantic and ugly) and bought a bunch of dance 12s around the city. Now that I'm back on the hunt for vinyl I guess it's basically 2003 right now, so by extension I guess I should be trolling for girls on Friendster and covet my friends' dj gigs at the W hotel.

So here's yet another vinyl mix for yo asses, some of the mixes are pretty raw but I equate that with realness. Plus it's one of my favorite mixes I've made in a little while:

i hate to get all racialist, but damn...
golden state drops two wonder bread poster boys ,
picks up problem child stephen jackson and baby al harrington,
then they proceed to dismantle Cuban and his German hoops experiment?
this has definitely been the most compelling NBA basketball I've seen since
game 1 of the 2001 playoffs...

predictions + observations:
1) if the suns and golden state make it to the western finals, expect the NBA to be changed FOREVER.

2) i still don't like something about matt barnes

3) dude looks like a gay porn star:

You may know the name Snackmaster, but many of you might not know the real deal...
Here's just one example: Snack goes out to dinner with his Ma-dukes
at Peter Luger Steakhouse, heralded for having the best goddamn steaks
in NY(it takes at least 1-3 months for a reservation), to eat heartily and even
bring home leftovers. Then I come through the crib to work on a mix, which is
pretty often these days, to catch Snack cooking up this concoction. You don't
know ghetto fabulous until you've done this! (Check the box - It's generic helper!)
steakstroganoff-1.jpg

And the broil method keeps it real juicy...
steakstroganoff-2.jpg

Perfecto! Luger-stroganoff a la Bushwick.

I've seen far too many snacking adventures to list here.
Let's call this yourfirst taste. (More on the way...)

Also, if you ever want to check one of our live sets, this friday we'll DJ'ing be here.

Current trends in music are annoying the shit out of my right now. I think other people are feeling the same way as well. That being said, what will the rest of the year hold for music? What country or genre will DJs abuse next?

My predictions:

1. Mid 90’s Soft Alt-Rock… I think I’d take my shirt off if Natalie Merchant’s “Jealousy” was played out somewhere.

2. Radio Club Shit… This has always been popular but it’s coming back in a very big way. People want monotony i.e. Mims. Also… that new Rihanna song that kind of sounds like The Cranberries with some bass and Jay Z is FIRE!

3. Downtempo… Never actually met the guy but I checked out the Gaslamp Killer’s new mix CD (which is really good by the way) and is making me rethink the whole stoner downtempo scene. Cool shit.

4. Rare 60’s garage rock 45’s… Spending 2K on a single 45 is the equivalent of getting grillz.

5. Baltimore Club/Baile Funk… Shit doesn’t look like its going anywhere for a while…

6. The triple mashup… I want to hear some of these… Ayers I’m looking at you for this one buddy.

7. Backpack Rap… Yes, it’s back... pun intended. People are ready to start hearing Gangstar’s Full Clip remix again… possibly on repeat.

That’s it I think…feel free to rearrange or add to the list… but don’t forget you heard it here first.

Oh and here’s another little Baltimore edit by yours truly:

Dr. Pitts: West Baltimore

Florida here I come.

Mark my words. I can see what’s coming. Remember when I made a post about rave over a year ago? Soon after that Ayers did a rave mix and a whole ton of people started buying old XL reissues. See? In a few months don’t say I didn’t warn you when you’re buying Go Go Dolls and Third Eye Blind edits.

me, stony, and tangfield went to Friday Night Fights last weekend. this semi-pro, fight club style event was held in the basement of a midtown church. tickets are $20, beers are $4, slices are $3... not bad for 15 plus fight card....

fnf.jpg

one observation was that boxing is definitely on its way out. the muay thai fights were so much more interesting. there's much more action, contact, and things to interest you. they even play this cool traditional music during the fight. if mma wasn't around, i'd guess that muay thai would have been the next big thing...

here's a taste of the muay thai action:

more info here
if you're gonna go, get there an hour early, the line is long...

and while we are the subject of fighting...
the asian race is taking some big blows recently,
first the VT wacko
and now the this dude from the Ultimate Fighter. this guy is pathetic... first he plays himself in the ring, but then he has to break into the biggest bitch-boy session in the history of the UFC. we need Rush Hour 3 to correct this mess.

Back around 2002 I remember talking to a friend and saying "i really think they should drop an all instrumental record, but that would never happen cause Capitol would want at least one song with vocals, a video, a hit single etc." Then in 2004 came To the 5 Boroughs, and it was kind of the total opposite of what i wanted. But I bought the record, dug a few tracks (like 3), and felt overall the beats they did in Reason were thin and pre-setty. And their raps and lingo were not on some new ish. I even heard someone come into the lab store and say "i know them man, they're out of touch.." (I agreed, cause I hadn't seen Yauch at misshapes lately either) Anyways ffwd to 2007 and they're dropping "The Mix Up" -an all instrumental record (!) - what's mtv to do with a hit instrumental single? I wonder what Capitol has planned at the marketing meetings? Lets hope the music sounds better than the album cover art... side note: why isn't dave tompkins on this blog? yes, that was a mam vf-11 vocoder on "intergalactic"
