Lloyds corner pt. ????? the return.

up late. its been a minute i know. appologies for the hiatus. i wish i could say ive been mad busy but the fact is i havent done shit all year. my friend james hip'd me to PEEKVID.COM and its kinda been a wrap for me since. there's nothing more depressing then watching television on you computer. FYI

anyway, i figure in order to work my way back into your lives i have to get personal. its time to let down my gaurd, take my hands out of my pockets, extend my friendship and say "welcome, I so do enjoy your company". that being said...a look into my closet. enjoy.

always,
Lloydski

if god had a tshirt company this is what it would look like....
kellyrules.jpg
i bought this shirt off of ebay 5 years ago for about 4 bucks. if you were to ask me if it was worth it id point at kellys name with my right hand, look you in the eye and smack the shit out you with my left hand.
jaykell.jpg
i found this shirt a couple weeks after the infamous concert on fulton for 15 bucks. as far as im concerned their first colabo (did i just use that word?) was waaaaay better. like one of the best albums of the 20th century better. like a notch above blueprint better. go cop it if you havent. trust me! even woody likes it. (right woody?) anyway, i bought this because i like to document Rkelly life in wierd ways and this is when shit got crazy....again

back
inodiddy.jpg
i got this in at PG plaza in maryland when i was 14. we had open lunch at my high school which meant we could leave at lunch and often i would stay gone only to rome shopping malls stealling discus shirts, nautica gear, cassette tapes from circuit city and columbia jackets. i bought this shirt tho...i like diddy.
kellyshirt2.jpg
this one ive had the longest and wear the most. i also got this at PG plaza only i was 12 this time and i was with my mother. i remember we were christmas shopping and this was the one thing i bought for myself. i remember it like it was yesterday because that was the year i told my father i wanted to be a photographer and in support of this he got me a football for christmas.
dmx.jpg
yep, PG plaza wins again. if there was a theme to my shirts it would definitely be "fallen soldiers" or something.
oj.jpg
OJ SIMPSON THAT IS!

oh, and to MIKE 2600 and EGG FOO. you forgot one very important ingredient.

MORE SHIRTS TO COME!

couple posts back i referenced "kraze burger"
i didn't anyone would get it, but of course Utz Stacker emailed me about it...
i'm not sure how this guy ended up in Seoul (see pic below)
but he's there and he writes me hilarious emails...
you've been blogged!
(btw, kraze burger is a chain of burger joints in korea started by a korean-american)

utzstacker.jpg

he sent me images of this cool Korean design book he found over there,
never thought I'd see kimchee packaging in a design book...
but it really covers a interesting theme: how to make the ugly look beautiful....

koreandesign.jpg

also Bozack wrote me about my Namm post,
pointing out that Bozack mixer might actually be the first DJ mixer. it came out in 67 and pre-dated the Urei. after I got the correction, I went to check up on the Pioneer mixer from 1974 and it's actually (in the words of Pionner) the "first Pro DJ product," whatever that means... seems like they are trying to pull a fast life remix. (If you are wondering why Bozack shares the same name as the mixer: "btw i go by bozak because it was my fam's OG last name before they were on the lam during prohibition. they changed it to evade the feds cuz they were slangin that moonshine. my name has nothing to do with this mixer.I want one though."

bozak_mixer.jpg

also what i'm listening to these days:

awesome Brasilian album... available at the lab

1075_image_1.jpg
didn't believe that folk and punk could be used together, until i heard this... since his passing, it's only gotten that much more powerful.

cd_theevolution.jpg
i hate to admit this one, but this shit is pretty good. so what if he's the son of Alan Thicke?

panslab.jpg
also, AVOID THIS MOVIE... unless you like depressing as fuck movies with no redemption at the end... seriously, this falls into my worst movie theater experiences, up there with Million Dollar Baby and Legally Blond 2...

This was already posted on pitchfork but its so good you gotta read it again. basically my dream lineup. Seriously let every act marinate--Tag Team? CHECK. If I had photoshop skills I would add Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Mephiskapheles, Yerba Buena, Atari Teenage Riot, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, John Tesh, and throw in a Wolf band (but make them play with Kellert Williams)
I think Lloydski would add P.O.D. ("Alive" ? eh? epic!!) and Woodman would add an entire Moonska Tent, but they can chime in if they want..

we're building a new clothing display in our LA store to accommodate the "Roving Packs of Streetwear Kids." no joke. we'll be sitting in the store, and then all the sudden they'll be like 20 dudes from the same crew hunting for gear. kraze burger. also, this illustrates two fundamental design/business concepts:
1) starting small and going big later is sometimes the best option.
2) destroy and rebuild rather than modify.

also would like to announce the next Money Studies release
which will be a sampler of upcoming Money Studies projects
this EP will feature original tracks by:
Blu Jemz
Gaslamp Killer
Eggfooyoung
Eliot Lipp
Snack & C'mish
and possibly others...

by the end of the year, expect a full-on compilation in the style of MoWax Heads...
that's right, we're taking it back.

just got back from a stint at LA store. Jared Eberhardt installed his awesome cassette posters at the store on thursday. go check em out, and if you like, you can special order them at the store.

P1030446.jpg
on friday, I went to the annual NAMM convention which covers everything from violins, to guitars, pro audio and djing. this is the real underbelly of the industry: lots of suits, mullets, ex-mullets, and shady electronics people.

P1030448.jpg
the coolest thing I saw was the upcoming Serato competitor by Native Instruments. The interface looked robust with all sorts of inputs, the timecode was tight, and the software had many more features than Serato. on a side observation, there weren't that many small companies at the show this year. seems like the big boys like M-Audio/Digidesign and Native Instruments are taking over the production game.

P1030457.jpg
Pioneer had a cool mini-exhibit about "historic DJ products." apparently, this is the first DJ product ever: a Pioneer mixer from the mid-seventies.

P1030455.jpg
go-go midi control! this guy was killing the computer drums using some old-school MIDI controller.

P1030467.jpg
In pro-audio, Akai is know for 2 things: the MPC series and this electronic clarinet-type thing called the Ewi

P1030472.jpgP1030474.jpgP1030477.jpg
As usual, the best action was downstairs where all the independent companies show their wares. Over a hundred custom guitar dealers, plus this strange booth of vintage and homemade synths.

P1030479.jpg
NAMM is also a haven for b-listers. this is the second year I've seen CC Deville there. my top NAMM spotting was Elvira two years ago, I almost popped 12 year wood (I had a crush on that cleavage when I was young)...

P1030484.jpg
there's also a bunch of Asian companies downstairs, offering generic goods... this poster was so strange (and communist), I saw it at a Chinese case company booth.

P1030486.jpg
there's also a bunch of cool performers down there.

Wow. I've been waiting for this moment for so long I don't even know what to do with my life now. I guess I can give up. So long records, I don't need to collect you anymore. After all, how I can I go out and shop for records when THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO FIND!

My fucking holy grail of records is found. Shout to Gimme Gimme for the connection. I believe when I got it my reaction was basically the following:

(spoken to the record while pawing it)

"Oh my sweet God, precious fetish object I can't believe you are now finally in my arms. I'm not even going to LISTEN to you! Do you understand! You are going into a frame and up on my wall. [as if the record were a baby or a cat:] Yes you are. Yes you are!!!"

And so now it's a wrap on records. I had a pretty good run I guess. There's some obvious stuff I never got around to getting, but really I think I covered all the basics. I even for some reason got into a little reggae phase, even though I basically think reggae (that's right, ALL FORMS OF IT!) is basically inhuman screeching noise, but there are worst things than reggae. The bastard offspring of reggae, reggaeton for example. It's amazing, I think reggae reveals how truly racist I really am (but try to hide).

OK, gatefold 7" of Offspring's "Come out and Play," gatefold 12s of Poison's "Something to Believe In" and (for no discernible reason) Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" ... it's time for you to go into my "why in God's name did I buy you" pile.

Christ! Andy has a 12 of "Hunger Strike" and Lloyd has a 12 of "Mr Roboto" though, so I guess they both still win. Plus Kevin has a 12 of "Old Time Rock & Roll," which he will hold on to "just in case."

Fri 26 January 2007

A new monthly night of ground-breaking showcases by cutting edge artists, in a no-nonsense intimate underground Manhattan setting. It's that simple. DJ showcase by the extraordinary;

Detroit Grand Pubah's. With support from the very talented, yet very modest Alison Tara of Dirty Trick Records and NYC's Turntable Lab.

The Detroit Grand Pubah's, famous for their underground hit, "Sandwiches" and 2nd album "Galactic Ass Creatures From Uranus" (nice) which got signed to Steve Bug's, edgy Poker Flat imprint. But novelty act, they are definately not. The 2nd album spawned 2 club hits, "The Clapper" and "Big Onion" that torched the way for big bottomed velvety-cheeked electro house.
With a raft of new works in the pipeline and a new full live show featuring guitars and live percussion, work is under way for a new, more song-orientated, album with Detroit and Chicago influences.

If Techno is Kraftwerk Jamming with with George Clinton in an elovator, then The Detroit Grand Pubahs have got Spike Millligan on drums, Richard Pryor on Bass, and The Hair Bear Bunch on vocals.

Expect the unexpected...literally...

Online Musics.

I buy lots of music at Turntablelab (10% discount bitch!) but you can't listen to records on a plane so I'm always looking for new shit to put in the Ipod. Stretch Armstrong has a new blog for the old heads that looks real promising. Discobelle is a top notch MP3 blog and mix series run by my people in Malmo, Sweden. Fluokids in France is also nuts. The Mad Decent blog is weird and great. You better already know about Snack and C'mish on Turntablelab Radio. The Rub has a show on BrooklynRadio.net too; check out Evil Dee and Mr Walt spinning House at The Rub warehouse party and be sure to grab our James Brown mix (recorded live at The Rub NYE). PJ has Cosmo spinning Funk 45s live in Boston last week - go download that at Galactic Fractures. My friend Jamal Ali (who works at the Lab Mahattan store during the day and still manages to pop Grey Goose bottles at night) and his man Evan Baggs consistently kill it on East Village Radio. So do my dudes Catchdubs and Mark Ronson and Queen Majesty and Roy Dank.

party-woodylloyd.jpg

went to check out that loft party that lloyd shouted on the blog. the upstairs dancefloor was kinda stale until Woodman and Lloyd showed up, dancing like bisexual banshees. I've noticed a new trend with djs which i think is pretty cool.

here's the typical i am a dj and i'm going to a party steez:
1) head straight to the dj booth
2) give the dj a pound
3) assume relaxed position around or near the dj booth (proximity to booth depends on how well you know the DJ)
4) sulk around said area while everyone else is having a good time.
5) if the dj plays a song, that you as a dj agree with, raise your hand, and bob your head several times in a most righteous fashion, maybe even give the dj your nod of approval or some M.P.A. (more pound action)... but no dancing!
6) action of the night: another dj arrives in said area, all the assembled djs give him exaggerated M.P.A. Word up bro!
7) resume sulking
8) gets no tang.
9) one of the djs in said area pops out a blunt, everyone smokes it like a gay porn.
10) still no tang.
11) outtro M.P.A.
12) leave drunk, stoned and alone.

well here's the new shit:
go to the party and fucking have fun.
dance your fucking ass off.
talk to that girl you've been staring at all night.
do some blow if you have to!
that's your new year's resolution dj brethren.
im retired...
