i've gotten some requests for some design related posts, so here's a cool one via the Frogman. the Storefront for Art + Architecture is having a very intersting show about architecture zines from 60s and 70s, it's quite mindblowing and humbling. check their website, then click on "magazines" for a sampling.

also if you are lacking inspiration, go search out this book (out of print, but widely available used).
forgetalltherules.jpg
definitely one of my top 5 design books of all time. Bob Gill really gives you an invaluable glimpse at his design thought process. I look at this book all the time, even though I've had it for years. Gill gives you a sense that every design job is like playoff game, and you should really give your design some real thought, rather than just spitting out aesthetics.

and lastly,
the one and possibly only true perk of being a dj equipment dealer
liquorxmas.jpg
it's tradition in the dj equipment world that distros send their dealers, a bottle of liquor for X-mas, and i'm pretty sure that the quality of the alcohol depends on how much you buy from them...

off until x-mas, be safe.

farmersmarket.jpg
my favorite thing about going to the LA store is that I don't have to deal with eating the same deli food for lunch everyday. simple, i know. the Farmer's Market is a couple blocks from the store, and one of my favorite places to eat in the world...

lotteria.jpg
sorry to all our mexican affiliates, but Lotteria has got the best mexican food I've ever had. sure, it's probably not 100% authentic, but it's damn good. i have acheived pansy-level, cause I order shit "protein style" now (lettuce in place of bread/tortillas), but LA is the only place where it's an actual option, so when in... and damn, what a nice photo.

bagelsinla.jpg
bagels in LA get a bad rep too. I must have eaten at this bagel place around the corner 5 of the 6 days I was there. LA bagels taste like pretzels, which is not that bad. another LA touch, bagels come with a pickel, olives, and cucumber salad on the side. ask for that in nyc, and you'll be asked to leave.

people in LA are spoiled,
ever seen a DJ shop that looked like this?
lastore-montage.jpg

johnkim.jpg
the rest of the LA crew. this is John Kim, our token LA korean. he manages artists like Blu and Taarach on the side. get at him if you need taxation without representation.

jj.jpg
this is JJ. we did a mass cleaning of the records (go check it out $1 sale on 100s of 12"s). our crowning achievement was deading the entire reggaeton section. Willow later told me that JJ is also known as Mestizo, an indy emcee who is huge in europe, sweden and pockets of the midwest.

the entire LA crew:
lacrew.jpg
jon, willie, jemz, tamra, jj....
and JJ has a message for all the potential shoplifters... check the switchblade.

it's also true that whenever you're in LA, you're gonna run into some east coasters....

spankatla.jpg
Naeem came through taking a break from recording.

brentrollins.jpg
Caught Brent Rollins and other Ego Tripperd at the HVW8 gallery/shop. Dude is probably one of the top 5 most influential designers in our little world. Look out for the new Ego Trip show on Vh1, it's a reality show that puts white rappers through various competitions in the Bronx, hosted by Serch, nonetheless.

Basically one thing most DJs don’t get is that for the most part DJ names are VERY ridiculous. I’ve never had one. David/Dave Pitts or DR Pitts has always been my DJ name.

I’ve caved in and came up with a DJ name for myself.

After hearing that banging remix Snack and Commish’s friend Mathead did under the name Passions (I’m assuming this is based on the TV show name) I decided I finally had to come up with a DJ name.

My new DJ name is DJ Swans Crossing.

I try to keep shout outs to a minimum (you've gotta be on some pat sajak shit) but this is how all the big promoters are getting around these days. Here Joel M shows off his butter OM Flyer. (a relative of the PK Ripper) It's worth more than the Dodge Colt I used to own (but not my trunk full of JL subs of course) More importantly, he's wearing all black.

Crupi Cages and Redline Flights are a must. (isn't this so much better than football?) The best thing about high end bmx parts is that they were always someone elses at some point., or just plain stolen.

MYCDS.gif

So nobody ever posted about this but about a month ago Snack and Commish DJed at the MOMA (Les Sav Fay sp? also played a set). Practically the whole office came out. Everyone was drinking and getting down but some more that others. Like take for example one of our current customer service ladies Riki and ex-customer service Laura grinding with ex-shipset Mike Rauch. About five minutes after this picture was taken Rauch took off his shirt. Mind you this is the main floor of the fucking MOMA. A little later on Laura knocked a drink out of my hand with her ass while I was trying to talk to a girl.

BLOG01.gif

I think Lea Thopmson was there too but I wasn’t quite sure if it was her or not. Basically I wanted to hit on her, get her some drinks, and tell her how much I liked Back to the Future 2.

Good times.

Oh and thank god I don’t really listen to hip hop, cause the new Clipse, Jay-Z, Snoop, Dipset shit, Ghostface, and Bay Area stuff suck. I pretty much still keep it real salty and only listen to Black Moon and Main Source instrumentals. Only in my room mind you cause nobody wants to hear that shit out.

That Beyonce shit is fire though, Upgrade You and that really white Laguna Beach sounding song that’s on Hot97 every other minute now are both great.

Christ, enough with the sports already. Can we please just whine about music for awhile? Christ!

For example, the finely robotically-tuned harmonies of Panic! At The Shittyo have recently issued a public statement about their boner-inducing sounds.

I particularly enjoy the impassioned pleas of fuckingmassivepoo who states:

Everyone else who commented are arses.
You all wish you were emo you bunch of poos.

arsenal v. chelsea this weekend was top notch. "incredible pace" as the commentators always say.

as a gunners fan, I have come to the realization that Chelsea has better overall talent, but this game re-confirmed to me that Arsenal has the better overall style. How else would the Gunners take this game save the WONDER STRIKE by Essien? No Henry, no Rosicky, no Toure, a bunch of new starters on defense, softies Van Persie and Cesc winning the midfield battle most of the game, and Flamini scoring a goal? Gilberto is quickly cementing himself as the team's most valuable player. Makelele the best holding midfielder? Think Gilberto is taking his title this year. Also, Senderos is a liability, but that's old news.

Now for the WONDER STRIKE...
(wait for the final angle shot)

Our main man in Sydney, Jimmy Sing, will be throwing a little Money Studies soirée at his store, Jimmy Sing's Imports, this Wednesday evening. My brothers from anothers, the Ro Sham Bo DJs, are gonna be spinning Money Studies shit ALL NIGHT LONG, and there will of course be alcohol. If you're in the area, you'd do well to check it out.

so i check my email this morning, to see that I got a bunch of emails from DJ Streak. Total blast from the past. I open em up and it's some spam virus stuff. Anyway, it got me reminiscing about the old scratch days. Streak was one of my favorite "turntablists," not because of his skills (although they were pretty solid), but because the dude didn't give a fuck. he was friendly as shit, out-going, and self-depracating... the total opposite image of what I think of when I think scratch DJ. And the dude got tang! at least it appears he did on his album covers, posing with car show girls and asian porn stars (check the selection below) And the best part was that dude always had to have on his Oakleys before he did his routine... maybe if all scratch DJs had half the charisma of Streak, shit wouldn't be at D&D status right now.

I don't usually do the in-depth sports posts here, but it's time for a little Monday afternoon quarterbackin':

The New England Patriots are fucking up.

After a couple of really sloppy victories over some really mediocre teams, Belichick's boys finally dropped the ball yesterday (literally, see above) and were shut out at the hands of the mighty Miami Dolphins. And by "mighty," I mean "under .500 and still being coached by Nick 'Drunk At The Press Conference' Saban." The best things about the Dolphins are their cheerleaders and Olindo Mare, the latter of which basically defeated the Pats single-handedly (single-footedly?) and the former of which at least looked good while the massacre was happening. (For once, I cannot say the same for Tom Brady, though in fairness, Bill Belichick did take a break from his standard Friar Tuck styles in favor of a nice plain windbreaker.) From what I saw - I had to stop watching after the 3rd quarter - Corey Dillon and a few other Pats performed their roles perfectly. But any game where your team's best play is an illegal forward pass... you're probably not gonna win. Miami Dolphins or not.

if you live in NYC, and go out, you're bound to run into bridge + tunnel peoples, many of which are guidos. no disrepect to them, it's just a fact. I've been fascinated by guido style ever since I first got to NYC. Rooted in Z. Cavaricci and Guess, guido-style has evolved into the ultimate club/business attire. One trend over the last 10 years has been the emphasis change to the shirt rather than the pants (the converse epitomized by the infamous 100-belt loop Zs). And the major development within in this shift has been the striped shirt. I know, the whole striped shirt thing is old news, but I'm here to give you a recap and an overview of current trends I've been observing.

stripeshirt.jpg
first up, the old staples. striped shirt and the solid black shirt. what can be considered work wear transforms into instant club gear by unbuttoning the top buttons and buying a size down. however, the subtle shift from black to stripe was a strong statement. rather than the black of scarface and mobsters, the striped shirt subtlely spoke "I have a job, I might work in finance."

stripeshirt-nice.jpg
certain money-making Gs create a new social strata with the "I Make More Money" striped shirt variation first worn by 80s CEO.

striped-wide.png
marking a more universal, casual, peaceful vibe, Gs start rocking the colorful wide stripe shirt. somehow the spread collar becomes the norm. the striped shirt backlash begins.

striped-ps.jpg
one apocalyptic G enters a Paul Smith store and discovers the loud multi-striped shirt favored by Chelsea locals. this style catches on quickly but dies during one summer when the Gs found out mo's were the first to rock this style.

stripeshirt-angle.jpg
striped-diagonal2.jpg
these guys just can't give up the striped shirt. however certain creative Gs start rocking the incredibly ugly diagonal striped shirt. the variation caught on and offered striped shirters a whole new wardrobe category. Hilfiger and Kenneth Cole's stocks rise 12% on news of this development. this is called "flipping it."

stripeshirt-cross.jpg
striped-cross2.jpg
this is where we are at currently. double, crossing, diagonal stripes. this is what they call "next level"

another hot guido trend...
guido-huge.jpg
being HHHHUUUUGGGGE! genetically huge is so in right now. jacked gym dudes are just posing.

one trend that will never die....

Sad to say, but the new season of The Wire is already coming to a close. (Rumor is they're only signed on for one more after this.) If you're an idiot like me and spoiled the finale for yourself by downloading it off BitTorrent, The FADER is gonna be running some extended interviews all this week; they're definitely worth your time. And if you ever wanted a framed picture of Prop Joe, cop the original issue where the interviews (and accompanying portraits) ran. All in the game!

BONN, Germany - World chess champion Vladimir Kramnik lost his final game in a match against computer program Deep Fritz on Tuesday, ceding a hard-fought Man vs. Machine series 4-2.

Kramnik, seeking a final win to level the match, played an unbalanced opening with Black. He built up a good position and equalized. But he then went astray, losing a pawn from which he never recovered.

The Russian takes home $500,000 (euro375,000) — half of what he would have received if he had won against Deep Fritz, a commercially available chess program that runs on a powerful personal computer.

In my effort to bring you WPABTTLNYCStorefront Pt. II, here is a recent purchase I was feeling:
Store2.jpg
Remember the excitement/inspiration you got the first time (hopefully this was years ago) you held a duped VHS copy of Style Wars? (2 VCRs, stand up!) You can revisit that if you BLAST Kon & Amir's On Track #6 and study the super juice analogue photos on the immaculately fresh 3D like pages of Also Known As. Side note: I remember Raven told me he had access to one of Nike's $10,000 Cameras (maybe it was a hasselhof) and he took close ups of cans with that camera. Folks, there are meaty bangs for bucks tucked in our pungent NYC storefront.
And now, get Michna'd with the final installment of my high school 10 year reunion: (i know-who really cares-wait---YOU do!)
Jock.jpg
Here you have a classic mash-up. The football playing date raping meathead in the middle is talking to the class brain. That girl went to Oxford, got a 1700 on her SATs, and still strokes her chin A LOT. Then on the far left you have Cary who was a nerd but is now hot.
Robinson.jpg
When you see some people you realize that you have changed their name in your own head. His name is Robinson, Because he used to ride a chrome Robinson BMX. He was also part of the small but legendary older BMX locals gang, who rode such gems as Titan Titaniums, PK Rippers, Hutch, Elf, and plenty of Panama Jack apparel.
Marriage.jpg
If you go on this girls myspace page its just pictures of her wedding. (Not even worth the link). Didn't ESPO once say "marriage is for two losers" or something?
Meathead.jpg
Football guy dated Ms. WASPY in 1996, so why not tap that azz in 2006. Plus, we heard she's a nympho.
Mushrooms.jpg
Better pic of Cary. Here she talks to one of the guys from Secret Frequency Crew about how he used to sell her some good ass mushrooms. During his apex, he also had the triple dipped double green dragon sheets of acid. He was also the first to get his hands on an excellent cd compilation called ZOO RAVE. Anyways, the whole shebang ended with classic lines like "see you never!" or "see you at the 20-year!" and my personal fave "call me when you get divorced!"
If you have some good 10 year stories, please send an email to lab customer service.
