Best New Order song; "Temptation."

"Released on 12" and 7" vinyl, both formats had the catalogue number FAC 63. The two formats are not merely different mixes, but entirely separate recordings of the same song. The 7" version is a more structured version with a commercial synthpop feel; the 12" is more chaotic with the emphasis on electronic rhythms rather than melody. The 7" version plays at 33.3rpm to accommodate its length of around five and a half minutes.

Interestingly, the 7" version has a cold start and a fade-out at its end, and the 12" version has a fade-in at its start, with a cold end. As a result, a popular rumour among New Order fans that to experience the complete "Temptation", one has to paste together the 7" and 12" versions, so there is a cold start and a cold end. Despite the speculation, the band has never confirmed this to be true.

The vocal track on the original 12" version (this is the version featured in the 'Retro' box-set) features an audible scream during the song's intro. Supposedly, as Bernard Sumner was recording the vocals, other band members ran into the studio and thrust a snowball down his shirt."

went to a halloween party on saturday,
and basically, the dj almost ruined by night. how can you phuc up a halloween party? everybody is in costume, drunk off their asses, and willing dance to anything semi-interesting. it pissed me off so much, i felt i would have to write a post to him. dude was obviously feelin himself, posing like he was killing it, had all the best gear and then some, but failed miserably in several aspects.

1) work on your levels. this is club dj 101. not every song has the same levels, you need to tweak that shit on every song. loudness does not equal goodness.
2) nobody cares about your Jigga-man guest verse collection
3) more than one reggaeton song in a row is much too much, dude played several reggaeton mini-sets (this was his ultimate downfall)
4) prematurely cutting off big hits that everyone wants to hear (Justin) is not a super-dj power
5) straight hip-hop sets are a thing of the past, save it for your boys' pelle pelle fest.

I did a little record shopping this weekend although I only bought two things.

As far as record collecting goes I’ve gotten pretty serious lately. There are a few pieces of vinyl I’ll drop a pretty penny for if I can get something in near mint condition.

Import Whispers singles and OG Smiths presses are pretty serious right now with me.

I went to Academy Records in the city. Everyone in there was a total nerd or European (nerd) and basically paying way too much for shit you can find at The Thing or Vortex out in Greenpoint if you dig hard enough.

Fuck that shit, I don’t mind putting on the latex gloves and using hand cleaner looking for old disco and new wave singles.

Other Music was a little wack but I did find a Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark that I didn’t have. “Almost” might be my favorite OMD song of all time.

Shout out to Lab blog beefers, basically this is the only shit that makes me laugh besides my everyday life. Also, Kevin/Stress needs to start blogging.

Can someone please repress some LEGIT Clash singles? Basically I want an original, instrumental, and acapella for “Lost in the Supermarket.” Please.

I have MEDIORCRE DJing gigs in the CITY. I’m in talks right now about my first big hotel/bar gig right now like other past Lab employees. WHATEVER THIS IS THE BASIS OF WHY I NEED AN INTER. Dosent one have to graduate from working at turntable lab to actually making a living in their creative edeviors to warrent interns? To have an intern to carry your records don't you have to have some actual gigs? Serato is for losers? NO, Serato is for working djs, dumb ass.... Not office job having wanna bees.......
Real NYC experience? I feel like lab employees don't earn enough to live in NYC proper...... So maby is should say real amature brooklyn experience........
I have a lot of ideas? get the fuck out of here........

This is what's the fucking deal,

Im putting my shit out there,

I MOTHERFUCKING ROCTAKON NEED AN INTERN...........

I will double pitts pay,
20 bucks a day,
I Wont make you put shit on e-bay (cause I dont need scraps like that, e bay is for broke dudes)
Wont make you carry records cause records are a wrap, unless you a house dj....
and will get you into clubs where there are actual females not just other dudes looking for someone to talk about records with.....
You can jot down my idea for me too.... ideas like...... "hey intern lets go eat 200 dollars woth of sushi and i'll pay for it, then well hit the streets and i will pick up some college bitches or dudes for you to have sex with"
I'll get you corse credit too, in the class called makin money, and trappin snapper.....

Can't believe someone had the ballz to admit to listening to the new Sean Lennon album. It's probably a lot more common in LA than here... and by "here," I mean the Turntable Lab office, where I keep my headphones low to mask my secret shameful daily listenings. (I'm scared to look in iTunes and see how many times I've played Bow Wow & Omarion - "Let Me Hold You.") Anyway, yeah, this album is pretty cool... not as good as Into The Sun and it kinda falls off after the first half, but as faux Elliott Smith albums by sons of Beatles go, it's basically #1. okay, done with dinner...
getting back to the matter,
reason why i'm posting this, is because, for some reason I seem to get in a lot of conversations with people about their ideas for new businesses. most of the time, these people have grand visions about what their business will be like, but don't even know what margins they are going to be operating on...

more stuff to think about:

you're only as good as your money man. make sure you or one of your partners is willing AND capable of handling the company's finances (paying bills, accounting, checking numbers twice, hunting people down who owe you money, tactfully avoiding people trying to collect money, getting loans, advanced math). depending on the size of your business, this is usually a full-time job. if you don't have anyone in your group that can do this, find someone you trust before proceeding.

you should think in solid business terms and definitions as soon as possible. this is inevitable if your business succeeds, but the earlier you think about it, the more potential problems you will avoid. we did the head down thing for a couple years, and a couple of unfortunate lessons that we crashed into helped us change our ways. there is a reason why people go to business school.

don't let me dissuade you from the grind. once you've mastered it, it's a very fulfilling thing. it becomes its own growing thing, and you just have to direct it somewhere and make sure it runs smoothly.

okay, enough...
and good luck.

ps. an awesome show to learn business lessons

okay, i am by no means a business or economics master, but I would consider myself, somewhat of a homegrown retail expert. starting your own business without formal training is an enlightening and humbling process. the first mixer we sold was purchased with a stolen credit card (duh, so that's what the red "N" means?). I still remember dude's email... Betadays...

another duh story is about margins. I think for our first month of existence, we were calculating price margins wrong, which means that we were pricing shit wrong. we'll for all you people that want to enter the pseudo-glam world of boutiques and online shops, here's my personal experience with margins (don't quote me on this shit, but in my experience this is valid stuff).

price margins appear to have an indirect but strong correlation with grind (hustling, working your ass off, all-niters). if your margins are 75% or below, you're probably grinding your ass off. ever see those luxury goods boutiques (stress luxury) where the workers and owner are just chilling with a couple things for sale? he or she probably has some nice margins. sell one thing, cover your rent for the day. if it doesn't move, slash it in half, and sell it on sale while still making nice margins. The lower your margin, the more you have to sell, manage, and push. What about Tower? Low margins (probably around 25-40% at best), tons of products, tons to manage, tons of employees, tons of overhead.... The Grind killed them....

therefore, if you want to get into the retail biz, I really suggest checking out your potential margins. look for areas where you can offset low-margin goods like creating your own goods that you've produced or offering services. but if you're hovering around 50% or below, get ready for A GRIND THAT YOU HAVE NEVER KNOWN.

tings:
- retailers make less than 15% margin on iPods! the computer industry in general has the lowest margins (sometimes 10%!). many businesses in this industry make their money on repairs and upgrades.
- in my opinion, go invent something. it's a singular goal, and has clear fail & success signs.
- location. location. location.
- internet dudes: there are many of hidden costs when operating a successful e-commerce shop, research the hell out of it before proceeding.
- especially in retail, make sure your grind = proper compensation for yourself. always cut something off for yourself, no matter how small the piece. remember props and a cool self-image don't equal shit in the long run.

i thought i was going to write more, but i'm hungry.
sincerely yours,

the dream-smasher

ps. not salty, just lookin out.

“It’s K-Fed’s acting debut. He’s really cool.”

Message: I want to fight Lloydski. Maybe we could do a webcast of it or something. And tell dude to stop frontin' with his patchy little beard and mouse-like facial features. I've had it with that guy. If he ever comes up to the Yay, shit is on. He just has "I deserve to get beat down real hard" writen all over his face. Thank you.

There'll be music reviews, tour info, pictures, gossip ect ect ect. I thought of this today and i think its a great idea. Something different and exciting. Ive been backing this guy for a while now and in return he's been on a roll as of late. Believe me when i say, "this guy is the real thing" Turning Britney Spears out the way he did? JESUS! The one day i decide to leave the heat at home New york is fucking brick (really really cold). What happened to global warming? We need to get on that. Im a tropical people. you shouldve seen me making moves in shorts and hoodie. mad ashy. had to buy new clothes and shit!

Speaking of heat, last summer i was djing alot to the point where my sleeping schedual had completely reversed. Sunlight became a thing of the past and my nights were spent coming up with new and exciting ways to kill time. Ever seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy back to back? I have! Anyway, from one of thos many killing sessions came this. A half ass mix of Gogo music you probably wont like. There's no baltimore club, mash ups, balie funk, ironic remixes or undancable disco.

Buzz kill right!?

enjoy,
Lloydski (youre favorite!)

PS. Shout out to Jamal (also sketchy) at the store for saying the funniest thing ive heard in a long time today. "Whatever nigga, you Dj at a steak house!"...amazing.

and for thos who wanna complain about how slow "sardines" is i apologize. pitch control is a relative term at 730 in the morning.

more to come...enjoy your weekend

lastore-fixtures.jpg

we got some new fixtures at the LA store this week. there so much space there, we don't know what to do with it... it's the complete opposite of our nyc store, where we have to use every inch of wall space to show the product (seen the new cd racks?). the feeling of the two stores is completely different. I like the openess, light, and relaxed vibe of the LA store, but there's also something about the dynamics of the manhattan spot that LA will never come close too. i hate to wet our own whistle, but it's one of the few places left in the east village that has that old buzzy feeling about it.

other places that i feel the buzz in the village
1) Yokocho, Go and Decibel - old japanese reliables in the east village
2) Academy, Sound Library, A1 (probably Good Records too, but i've never been there)
3) used book store on 12th between 1st and 2nd ave - nice selection
4) that milkshake + hotdog place around the corner from the store, bad hotdogs - good service
5) gray's papaya - the workers are awesome, what race are they?
6) max's and nublu - these places do not change
7) porto rico coffee - the best kept secret, awesome coffee
8) autumn skate shop - right by the park

oh, and while we're riding the lloydski, roc, woodman wave on the blog,

Me and Commish were just talking the other day about how weird Weezy looks lately. I mean, he's been looking like a tattoo'ed steroid'ed black Predator for a while, but it's gone to new heights. And the whole "daddy" thing with Birdman on the new album is super-weird... and compounded if you take into account the rumors...

This will probably be the only time you see me do a sports post, but I happened to catch the Met's game last night. Holy crap. Although I don't really know the team, I do know that this wonderful crazy city loves them to death and vicarious bliss they give is something to behold. Everyone from thugs to sweet ol' grandma's care. Anyways the shit was too epic as you already know, classic storybook style. Tied 3 games each, bottom of 9th, Met's down by 2, bases loaded, 2 outs...... then a the biggest anti-climatic strike out ever. Snack tells me everyone at the local diner this morning was pissed, grumpy, and moral sucked. What a diarrhea dookie of a nice try.

Yo Pop Rocks and all you other bootleg records that lock the beat and put 8 bar intros on everything, here's a wishlist (I also invite anyone to add to this list):

Violent Femmes: Blister, Kiss Off, Add it Up
Danzig: Mother
Asia: Heat of the Moment
Radiohead: High & Dry
Dion: Runaround Sue
Billy Joel: Only the Good Die Young
80% of Queen songs
INXS: Never Tear Us Apart

By the way, the music videos for INXS and "Your Love" by the Outfield are extended versions. If you youtube them there's like an extra 8 bars on them already. If you guys are really horny to get that extra guitar riff, you can burn them off the videos...

SYKE!

Its about 530 in the morning right now so Im gonna keep this brief.

il admit I said alot of things in my first post. some things i meant and some things that were play. i said i planned to bring the heat to keep you warm all winter. are you not entertained? cus one thing i cant deny is the heat. i carry the heat with me where ever i go. i sleep with the heat, feed the heat, wash the heat and give it a place to sleep at night. i keep the heat close. therefore, i always bring the heat. that being said, heres a small sample of the heat.

Always,
Lloydski (youre favorite)

PS..Contrary to popular belief DJs dont actually like breakdancers. You bore us, take up space and reak of desperation (HEY, LOOK AT ME)...im over it!

So because i dont have cable, like many of you i sit around and watch "on demand" when ever im at my mothers house. I catch up on my shows, past Oprahs, the occassional b movie and my music videos. The more i do this the more i realize how out of touch i am. This was never more evident then last week when i was back home watching the Mtv Video Music Awards with my feet up. Now, i realize watching Mtv is know real gauge of whats going on but...well...it kinda is cus theres more people that do watch it then dont.

I like how Andy's pic is so big it bursts through the design constraints of the blog. Andy you and Lloyd both owe me hundreds of dollars. I want it to buy clothes.

Also, I just came back from Katz's on 2nd and they were filming a Sopranos scene there with noted jew-character Hesh. Nerdily, I was less impressed with the fact that this was happening than the fact that I was geeking about the level of competence of the production team. They were all "last looks!" and I'm thinking "I just found out what that means like 2 weeks ago."

Now I need to take a dump. I also just seriously gorged out with Kevin and Andy at Houston's the other night on some ribs. That also made me take a dump in about an hour. Also, apparently Kevin now wears leather jackets and Andy wears hoodies with fur on the inside of them and literally gold chains coming out of the drawstrings.

What else. If you haven't seen the Departed yet you are a fool. Never in my life did I think that Irish ska-punk (is that like Flogging Molly or the Dropkick Murphys or something) would make me pump my fist in the air.

Also, I just finished the Chuck Klosterman book IV. Theory about this guy is that before this book, he had 3 books. It doesn't matter what order you read them in. The first one you read you'll enjoy and think he's really clever, just like you, a well of pop culture references, etc. The second one you read is mildly irritating. The third one you read will make you throw the book across the room in complete and utter disgust. The fourth one is actually pretty good.

everyone always complains about how new york is getting cleaned up and all its character is getting washed away by $4000 one bedrooms and health food stores... if you want a taste of the funk, head over to sixth ave and west 4th. there's an disgustingly awesome row of stores there: a tobacco/bong shop, a Taco Bell/KFC combo restaurant, a low-level tattoo/piercing shop, a sex toy shop, and the knock-off Papaya King hot dog place (you can actually see Gray's Papaya from there, they were having pricing wars last summer). On any given night, there's tons of craziness here. Lots of thugs, even more homo-thugs, homeless dudes peddling magazine back issues, change hustlers... the funny thing is that everyone has to walk through here to get to the row of 3 star restaurants one block away, joe's pizza around the corner, or the west 4th subway stop. IFC opened up a big theater on the block, thinking it would spark gentrification, but that place is losing. I can't imagine it staying open much longer.

LLOYDS CORNER ENTRY 2!!

OK SO THE W HOTEL WHERE I DJ ON MONDAYS WAS HOSTIN SOME CORPORATE CONVENTION FOR HAIR DRESSERS. I DUNNO! BASICALLY THERE WAS MAD CHICKS FROM THE MID WEST AND NOT A STRAIGHT GUY FOR MILES. IT WAS PRETTY MUCH AN ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFET FOR ANY ONE WITH A PENIS AND MEANS TO USE IT. (BIBLICALLY SPEAKING) SO OF CORSE I CALLED KEVIN! I WAS PRETTY MUCH SWIMING IN SKANK FOR AN HOUR. HAD CHICKS FROM TENNESSEE EATING OUT OF THE PALM OF MY B GAME HANDS. IT WAS AWESOME! THE HOTEL BAR IS ONLY OPEN TIL 2 SO AFTERWARDS I PICKED MY FAVORITES AND TOOK THEM TO APT. IT WAS ME, KEVIN, 3 BAMA BITCHES AND A GAY DUDE. PERFECT EQUATION! ANYWAY, LONG STORY SHORT I HOOKED UP WITH ONE IN THE CLUB ALL WHILE THE OTHER THREE INCLUDING THE GAY GUY GOT ROBBED. AT APT? YEP! CONFIDING IN ME, (THE BLACK GUY) I ACTED LIKE I CARED BY SAYING CORNEY PHRASES LIKE" WELCOME TO NEW YORK BRO" AND " ATLEAST YOU HAVE YOUR HEALTH" I DUNNO. ITS GETTING HARDER AND HARDER FOR ME TO PRETEND I GIVE A SHIT. IM SLOWLY TURNING INTO MY DAD! SO ANYWAY, ME AND KEVIN BREAK OUT TO AVOID THE DRAMA. LONG STORY SHORT. LATER ON THAT NIGHT IM EATING BREAKFAST WITH KEVIN AND HE PULLS OUT A FIST FULL OF TWENTIES AND INSISTS ON BUYING ME BREAKFAST. DIDNT THINK MUCH OF IT THEN BUT CONSIDERING WE NEVER MADE IT TO AN ATM AND THAT I PAYED FOR HIM TO GET IN THE CLUB AS WELL AS DRINKS AND WHAT NOT NOW LEADS ME TO BELIEVE...KOREANS ARE FUCKING SKETCHY!

From Alison...

Went to the first year of the M3 Summer Music Conference in San Francisco last week. Basically it's the new Winter Music Conference, only in SF in October. Like Miami, there were so many parties, you couldn't hit them all. Here's some of what i did:

sf-2006-112.jpg
sf-2006-119.jpg

Sunset boat party
Fred Everything and Miles Maeda killed it- the music was sick and the crowd was going nuts. At one point during the nite, this guy told me that for hours, he thought this ball of flowers hanging from the ceiling was a person dancing next to him. Who knows how much acid that dude ate.

sf-2006-078.jpg
sf-2006-076.jpg

Come-Unity 15 year anniverary party at 1015.
Used to hit this party every single month for years in the early/mid nineties and amazingly, shit was just about as hot last week. Green Velvet tore the place apart with a 2 hour set and did live vocals to his tracks. I think every person in the place had eaten pills. La la land.

sf-2006-848.jpg
sf-2006-856.jpg
sf-2006-854.jpg

Detroit Grand Pubahs live.
Sickest show I have seen in I don't even know how long. Paris the Black Fu had a beer in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other, which he was pouring into people's cups in the audience. Check the costumes. Yeeaaah. Can't beat this shit. I wanna squeeze it, I wanna hump it. Two times. Hump Hump.

sf-2006-089.jpg

Dj heather.
Best dj set I heard out there.

stuff-2006-064.jpg
stuff-2006-065.jpg

Also went back to my college town, Santa Cruz, where everyone is high 24/7 and seeing people like this walking down the street is completely normal. This dude in the pink was standing on the corner before I went into this restaurant for dinner and when I got out, he was in the same spot. So I went up to him and asked him if I could take his picture. He smiled, and slowly shrugged, didn't say anything and posed for the camera. I then asked him if he dressed like that everyday, and he just smiled and shrugged again. When I walked away, I said "thank you, you look great" and he again smiled, slowly shrugged and said "thank you" to me. I then crossed the street and there was this group of kids there. This kid on a bike stopped me and asked me in disbelief, "yo- did he just say thank you? He NEVER talks!!!"

Santa Cruz locals. Gotta love it.

You know about this? I might be little late, I dunno, but this is blowing up right now in Philly and the tri-state area. Its the fucking Wu-Tang Dance Yall!!! As far as I know, its Philly's answer to Krumpin' or the Chicken Noodle Soup. Bump that Bmore high and kill the floor with what Snack describes as your karate "horse stance" with in between moves. The clip is from some dudes from Maryland, not Philly, reppin' their best Wu-Tang, but who would know bmore better? The first two guys warm it up, but the dude at 3 min. is their version of "the real deal".

wutang-video.jpg

And speaking of Wu-Tang, here's some vintage nostalgia throwback for yall. I remember being stuck on this when I was just outta high school, but now lookin back, this shit is EPIC. There are so many cheesy 3d effects, it could equal a bad chinese kung fu flick. Highlight's include: A swarm of killer bees blasting through a wall leaving the Wu-Tang logo "Bugs Bunny" style in the wall, RZA as the dark angel, and a blind man receiving sight from the power of rhymes. Too good.

went to the MOMA this weekend. first time I've been since the re-design. quite an amazing space, but that $20 entry fee hasgotago. the design floor was pretty awesome, but not as awesome as this food cart parked outside. this is not a game. that shit is a duplex.

bogdan-beforeromania.jpg

afterwards, headed down to Chinatown to visit the venerable Dumpling House , where you can get 5 of the best dumplings for one buck. ended up at APT at night where I caught Bogman before his big return to the motherland of Romania (his first time back in 4 years). We drank some Romanian moonshine and chilled with Mr. Brennan Green.

popburger.JPG

always seem to leave APT a bit faded, and always have to make the decision between Corner Bistro or Pop Burger. Corner is old school new york, legendary for their burgers and cheap beer. Went there stoned once, and the burger was so bloody and juicy, I thought i was eating a heart. bugged me out. Therefore, we went to Pop, which is like the best futuristic burger joint. it's kinda (or very) sacrilegious. the burgers come packaged in these perfect fit boxes and the place looks like an Ikea niteclub... but in the end, the burgers, fries, and shakes are incredible. highly recommended.

"If I gotta choose a coast, I gotta choose the East. I live out there, so don't go there. But that don't mean Boy Genius can't rest in the West, seen some nice breasts in the West!"

Thats right bitches, B. Genius visiting LA for the week... hit up my myspace to kick it with my posse (myspace.com/mayorofgburg). plenty of fatburger + in-n-out visits! plus, unofficial in-house appearance at Turntable Lab LA from Boy Genius later in the week!

If you go to Vienna, go to Flex (also in the summer you can loiter outside with 500 other people)
v3.jpg
If you go inside you will hear one of the best soundsystems in Austria. The stage is made of concrete, and underneath is a tunnel of amps and subwoofers.

On any given night you will see this guy. Legend has it that he lives in Flex.

On FM4 Vienna broadcasts a huge spectrum of non commercial music, while America plays the same 8 songs 15 times a day.

Trishes and I got to play at a party for a zine called The Message. The venue was near Karlsplatz, so you had to watch your back for mega dirtballs lurking near the schnitzel.

while writing a blurb for Acapulco Gold's newly released Lo Lifes shirt, it reminded me of a site I stumbled across called vintage gear addicts. they take the whole Polo-North Face collecting thing to a level that even all you hypebeasts can't match. I love how they sniff out the rare Polo shit like the sports series and even robes! they even sniffed out the rare North Face (you probably didn't know there was such a thing). Go check out the site for yourself, and don't forget to score one of their custom P-Wing Plaques!

punjabithriller.jpg

First off, this Punjabi version of Thriller is just too good... But anyway, last weekend was dubbed "future weekend." I went to the NextFest (which was like a geek-fest of futuristic gadgets and robots) and then the "Laptop Battle" (which you can read about this in my Matt Kelly CD review). The robots were...uhh... OK. Kind of disappointing (I guess we still have a ways to go before some real android type shit.) But it was pretty fun none the less.
Here's the first "hostess-bot" which is available for rental in Japan (sex-o-roid????)

sexoroid.jpg

Then there were the robot DJ's that SUCK...

The Korean bite off Asimo (with the head of Einstein no less) dancing to MC Hammer's "Can't Touch This"...

einsteinbot.jpg

...and this streetwear bot (camo pants not shown) whose facial expressions were scary as hell...

I don't think this weekend will be nearly as "futuristic"...

ok let me pile on with one more sports post.

the only good thing about being a Mets diehard in Los Angeles?
this guy right here:
hof_scully_1.jpg

I was talking to my uncle Jimmy yesterday and he said something like "listening to Vin Scully is like listening to God call a baseball game." maybe a stretch, but not much... the guy has been announcing for the dodgers since they were in brooklyn and just has the most beautiful feel for the game. announces every game solo (no color man) and laces his words with measured, musical and at times poetic phrasing. and he's the king of shutting up when the time is right, such as game 6 of the 1986 world series:

"A little roller up along first ... behind the (first-base) bag ... it gets through Buckner! Here comes Knight ... and the Mets win it!" Scully then remained silent for approximately 3 minutes, letting the pictures and the crowd tell the story.

This is how it should be done folks. Don't fuck with my baseball, please. For the ultimate, check this audio from the 9th inning of Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game. "29,000 people and a million butterflies."

liking sports is an illogical behavoir. you invest so much time and energy but you're in total passive mode... setting yourself up for loser status failure (where Roc has every right to make fun of you)... when your team goes down, you drown in misery, and take solace with salty sports writers that rip your team a second on monday morning... but this sunday, the Skins showed me why it all makes sense. yesterday was fucking awesome: buffalo wings, nachos, a seat at the bar, and an overtime victory. thank you Santana Moss. can't touch dis.

hookers.jpg

So I'm trying to write this at 3am, still kinda drunk, before my 15 minutes of paid internet runs out. (Apparently, Australia has the worst and most expensive broadband internet pipe in the world... everyone's still on 56k...) Anyway, we (me, Catchdubs, Gorky, Ghislain Poirier) got to Sydney, spent an afternoon, and were prompty whisked away to a music summit in Newcastle. Newcastle is... I don't know how to describe it... a ghosttown, I suppose. Like, there are people living here, but about 10 years ago there was an earthquake which destroyed its already shitty economy, and now every other shop (almost every shop, really) is boarded or closed up, completely deserted. (FUN FACT: Newcastle has the highest rape rate in Australia!)

So after a few days of really dry panels and unresponsive crowds, we finished out the bitch and decided to get throwed tonight. After bouncing to a few pubs and parties at various hotel rooms, we went back to ours to just watch TV and chill with some friends. But as we got off the elevator, we all kind of stopped in disbelief, as there was a girl sat up against the wall (in front of a room, directly in front of the elevator) with tears streaking her cheeks, asleep or more likely passed out... and topless. Just sitting there. We walked past quietly to our room, until Levins (our host) had to listen to his conscience and go out to check on her. But she was gone.

In a way, it was a fitting end to our stay here. The guys told me a bit later that it was probably a hooker, since Newcastle was (and is?) a coalmining town and there are quite a few brothels and "escort" services. But regardless... it was kinda soul crushing, in a way that my drunken brain couldn't comprehend in the moment that it was happening but fully understands now.

We go to Sydney tomorrow, and Melbourne after that, where I'm assured there are many more open shops and lots fewer prostitutes.

Anyway.

G'night mates,
Lemon

P.S. On a lighter note, they have a reality show about meerkats here. It's kind of amazing.
