oh yeah speaking of la lemon, that reminded me of this shop over here
in LA called Red Lemon. After driving by (what you think Im gonna walk

and this is apparently one of their star products-

In case y'all didnt know or were wondering what happened to the Lemon,
Chris is on the Mad Decent tour with Wes, Bande De Role and CSS for the
next month or so. Yeah, six weeks off from Jay St bad lunches, six weeks
without our exel master, six weeks with no cookies to steal at the end of the
night (not that Im there), and six weeks of me covering all the commercial hh
blurbs (ouch). Sure it's a long time, but the young man had never been out of the
northeast! (boston/mass/ri people tend to do this) Anyway, absence here is
missed, but you can follow the tour hijinx over here

i thought i'd give it up to my favorite things that make up my workspace:

desk-setup.jpg

i had a bout with carpal tunnel a year ago. went to the doctor and all. it sucked. i tried all sorts of different keyboards, gel pads, mice, and mouse pads (apple peripherals suck for this). this is my golden combo. the matias tactile pro aka the best keyboard ever, a crappy first generation imac roller ball mouse (good weight), a belkin gel mousepad, and this purple wrist mat I got from staples. if you're on your computer a lot, I can not stress how important a comfortable setup is... trust me, you don't want to be awake at night cause of something so stupid as carpal... also, chairs with armrests are key.

desk-exacto.jpg

scissors are for suckers. kids should learn to harness the power of razor blades at a young age. scissors are the most cumbersome tools. it's impossible to cut a straight line. give me an exacto or box cutter anyday. one of my first design jobs was as a mechanical designer, which basically meant I cut shit with an exacto and t-square all day (i loved it). there's probably 100s of boxcutters in our office, we use them a lot. that green thing is a promo item i got from a record label. i love that thing. it cuts open cds wrapped in plastic.

desk-calculator.jpg

sorry to get all design nerd on you, but this is a definition of a design classic. the design for the Braun calculator hasn't changed in over 2 decades. while stony and frogman have gone through multiple cheapo full-funtion calculators, I've had the same Braun for over 7 years. so simple, so straight forward, so well built (love the color scheme too). makes an incredible gift. i got mine at moss.

desk-pantone.jpg

sorry to get all design nerd on you pt.2. the Pantone guide is also one of my favorite designed things. I've had this one for over 7 years as well (without any cards falling out). a must for anybody who wants to make things. so powerful.

desk-tobasco.jpg

if you've been following the site, you know that the food options in our neighborhood are pretty slim. basically, most of us buy our lunch at the same deli, 5 days a week. if i step back and think about it, it's pretty pathetic. anyway, this bottle of tabasco is my savior. i keep it by desk and i don't put it in the fridge. it starts getting murky in there, but I swear it gets better with age.

has anybody been watching the new Making The Band? is it me or is Scott Storch one of the most fascinating dudes in the game? first off, he looks like he escaped from Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory and became a superstar hip-hop producer. Dude doesn't talk, watching him "dancing" in the studio after they cut the final track was one of the most surreal moments on TV. He didn't have to talk, that weird-ass bouncing dance spoke volumes (and where'd he get his vocal coach, them 2 together? unstoppable). Finally, dude's fashion is on a different planet. He's like the 2000 version of Big Daddy Kane except he's short, white, and truly enigmatic. Mr. Storch, you're my new hero.

Weekend Blog Action.

Somebody has to do it, and it ain’t gonna be Gloves. It damn sure isn’t going to be Slow Hands.

Let me just say that everybody destroyed it at the RE:UP Manual 11 Release party. I’d be reading my issue right now, but, thanks to Missy’s quick hands, my copy is no more. So its either watch the T.Rex “Born to Boogie” DVD again or hit up the old TTL blog stomping grounds, I must be at least 30 words into this bitch. Theres no going back now.

As much of a record collector and general fan of music I am, I was put to shame last night. In a good way. Sure. Hanging with Eli and Morgan before the party, in Park Labrea (PLB stand up!) listening to 12”s on $100 slipmats, all sorts of talk about swedish producers, and Italian labels flying around the room. Nothing registering as remotely familiar... I witnessed the next level. These cats are on it. BOOM SPOOF

Holly came through to pick me in high style ala “Ray Cash Promotional SUV”. We made quick work of the Girl Water, and everybody came together for the decoy while I slid past the doorguy (nice work team) and proceeded to get down.

Morgan, Blu Jemz, Gaslamp Killer, Egg Foo, Dabrye and everybody else all wrecked it, as could be expected.

That paperclip story is pretty sweet, however, upon taking a glimpse at this dudes web site I came to understand that the house that he got out of this whole deal was situated in SASKATCHEWAN. Awesome. Personally, I’d take the red paperclip. Poor Canadian got hosed on that one.

While waiting in line at the post office 20 minutes ago, picking up a M.O for a C.O.D I had the pleasure of listening to some other Canadian, wearing a turquoise bandana in, Axel Rose-esque fashion, running game on yet, ANOTHER...canananadian! An otherwise horrible scene, had she not been talking about the wonders of...MYSPACE TEMPLATES, making it just, too much. Shear Terror.

Solo bolo at the store today, weird things happening. It's the second time in the past month a bird flew into the store. This one was in for the long haul though. It didn't die like the last one. No box coffin necessary. Just me and the birdman today. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Its going to be a long 8 hours...US Mail came through with the goods. Advance copy of Khia’s “Gangstress” bonus DVD in all its splendor?? Who's ready? As AMAZING as the cover artwork is, the bonus DVD fails to captivate on a level of something like...say...X Rated Japanese Reggae Dancers

ok, this is probably old news to people who live in blogland,
but i thought it was interesting enough to post.
this dude had the goal of trading up in value
from a single red paper clip to a house....
and he did it in a year. that's right he traded his paper clip for something
then traded it for something, etc, etc, until he got a house.
it's a pretty incredible story, and it's well documented on his blog.
the pivotal trade seemed to be when he (seemingly) irrationally
traded away "one afternoon with Alice Cooper" for a Kiss snow globe....
i'll let your read the rest...
anyway, it teaches an interesting lesson of inherent value,
and how much the US loves to back a loser (hello W!)

i told snackmaster to come up with a type treatment
for our new 12" series called Money Lotion (first one by The Roc, lookout!)
and he comes back after lunch with this...
he squirted it out in ketchup, pretty clever...
(what else would you expect from the snackmaster?)

Money Lotion continues with the idea of our Hollertronix 12" series
but instead of the leftfield stuff,
this series has a more definite target for the working dj
who's tired of playing the same boring songs, the same half-ass mash-up...
Roc's volume kills it and it's already getting burn by a lot of

Stony's is a man of many hobbies and interests...
his attention span is one of the shortest i know,
getting intensely involved in one thing, then dropping it
like a bad habit the next....
Stony's latest hobby: lap swimming.
he bought these new goggles that have an MP3 player built-in.
the interesting thing is that the music is played through your jaw
rather than your ear, so it works underwater....

if you're curious, stony's previous hobbies and fads:
- rock sculpting
- rock climbing
- intense weekly personal training sessions with Jean Marc
- serious attempt to run nyc marathon (after several training sessions, a bum knee ended it)
- wheat grass (hilarious, stony was so psyched on this one, but got sick the first time he had it)
- the infamous guido phase: connecting to his bk italian roots via Sean Jean velour suits and pinky ring (the truth, but the pinky ring never materialized)
- the party promoter phase: currently going, we'll see if it lasts to WMC as planned. think Roc and Blu Jemz are doing the next one in august.

namdemoon-1.jpg
on my second to last night in Seoul went to go check out the infamous Namdaemoon night market. this was quite overwhelming, never seen anything like it before. first of all, this market gets going around 10pm, and starts getting good around 1-2am. i'm going bullet-point for the rest of the descriptions cause there is so much to say about this place.

- this is where most of the clothing in all of Korea comes from. think of the Magic tradeshow, multiply by 10, and have it be open 6 days a week, afterhours nonetheless.

- it's freaking huge. there's several buildings the size of small arenas plus hundreds of tent vendors surrounding the buildings. as well as clothing, accessories, and shoes, there's a lot of food to be eaten.

- the grey market thrives here. don't get me wrong, the large majority of the business is straight here, but I stumbled onto floors that specialized in grey goods. there seemed to be 3 shades of grey here.
#1 - goods from the backdoor of factories. you'll find all sorts of legitimate skate gear here (Zoo York was all over), designer labels (Marc Jacobs for the ladies), and even some luxury goods (Paul Smith luggage had me tempted).
#2 - fine bootlegs. these look real, but by examing closely, you'll discover that they're fake. I even spotted some bootleg 10 Deep (sorry Scott).
#3 - bad bootlegs. these are the almost comical poor quality knock-offs. the people who make these think that they're tricking the system by mispelling names (Carvin Klein) or altering logos (Guess exclamation point).

namdemoon-2.jpg
- in terms of technology, this place is pretty archaic (strange considering Seoul is the most wired city in the world), but it runs incredibly smooth. there are no computers, everyone goes around with notepads, and what's most interesting is the bag system. you go to booth, pick your stuff, the vendor sticks the goods in a plastic bag, and puts it in this large pile (above), each bag connected by a wire tie. then the buyer (or hired person) comes back, gathers all the bags and sticks in another larger bag outside; then goes back shopping.

- bargaining. don't expect to win haggle battles here. these people are hardened pros. if you do end up getting a better price, it's probably just the price it's supposed to be.

dutyfree.jpg
on the other side of the spectrum, Korea is also known for its duty free shops (they even have Duty Free malls in the city). Koreans (and asians in general) are the biggest brand whores. like many things, they take it to the next level. By the end of the trip, the site of a Chanel sign made me sick.

airplane-seat.jpg

a moment of levity... for the first time in my life, I dropped a bomb in the airplane bathroom (sorry, TMI). I thought the toilet seat cover was pretty hilarious. I didn't end up using it though, you'd have to be an olympian shitter to execute perfectly.

arcades.jpg

One of the best memories of visiting Seoul as a kid was the plethora (excuse SAT word) of arcades around the city. Sadly, most of the arcades seem to be gone, making way for PC "bahngs," or PC rooms. Luckily, I found 1 in Insadong, complete with a retro section in the backroom. This is the og version of Snood, an addictive Tetris-like game....

...and Paul, I'm so ready right now. I'm on like lap 2 of possibly 6 with this girl Megan I met at karaoke on St. Marks. I can not sing London Calling but for some wierd reason she was into it but whatever, I'm going to finish this race. If not I can prepare for foreign downtempo girl (Sizzle even said she was a ma!) because I've given up on the Queen. Fuck reggae... although I can't front on Black Roses... shatterfest.

Pete was so on with the whole NYC summer girl thing. When I arrived at work this morning the lobby was filled with sweaty girls in tanktops. I don't know if this is coming out right or wrong but the sight was SO right.

PS1 is this weekend, nothing but european disco, kahkis, white sneakers, POWDER BLUE PETER BROWN T-SHIRT, and fresh D and G shades. Pic update on Monday

going through my pictures from the trip, and they're pretty abstract. think i was out of it most of the time....

insadong.jpg
this is Insadong, one of my favorite neighborhoods in Seoul. it is known as a traditional part of the city, this is one of the few places where all the signs are in strictly korean. there's a starbucks there (that and coffee bean are everywhere), and when it first opened it featured a sign written in english. There was major hoopla in response, so they eventually had to translate their sign into korean. this area was kinda touristy, but it had a real laid back feel to it with the trees lining the streets and all sorts of art galleries and craft shops.

potbing.jpg
this is pot-bing-su, a popular Korean dessert. kinda looks like that thing they have at Jollibees. it's made of shaved ice, condensed milk, fruit, rice cakes, and the signature bean sauce. so delicious. if you are interested, most korean bakeries in the states serve this dish.

korea-signs.jpg
i always had a feeling that koreans have a natural knack for graphic design, but the trip really solidified the idea. magazines, television, and store design were all consistently better designed than most cities I've visited. if you go to design schools, you'll always see a large contigent of overacheiving Koreans, now you know where they go after school.

mailboxes.jpg
many public buildings use this awesome mint colored paint for public areas (bathrooms, mailrooms, etc). at night time it has a weird eerie, muted glow... something you definitely see repeated in recent korean cinema like Old Boy.

So the cut chemist in-store last night was crazy. By far the most people

us to clean up. LA people need to get on the lab mailing list for the next

being screened in the store this time.

Here's a video Willow took with his shakey ass little camera, but you get a
really good idea of the AC-taxing atmosphere of all those people that were
up in here. Only one book damaged!

With all the companies involved in putting together a major label deal like
this, there were some funny mofos in here helping out or just taking up
space at the end of the night (no thanks to those two WB lames who
watched us drag trash for an hour then bogarted the rest of the t-shirts
for office crew who could care less). Shouts to the URB guys tho, the

i'm back from the motherland....
give me a moment to go through my photos and get you updated.
i hate my powerbook, i swear that thing causes ball cancer.
i'm giving mine away after i download those photos...

3 things I immediately realized when i got back to the city
1) nyc girls in the summertime are definitely the hottest on the planet. so much style, diversity, and blatant sexiness. you'll see an impeccably artsy Parsons girl followed by the sexiest milf followed by hot business tang, all dressed fly as hell, all on the same block, repeating for several blocks.

2) blue ribbon on Sullivan is one of the greatest places on earth. I fly in late sunday night, head straight to BR, and get raw oysters (supremely fresh even on a sunday), stiff martinis, the best fried chicken (the skin tastes like bacon), and a top rate burger, matched with the finest service and a too-hip soundtrack (they were playing air, so ridiculous, but awesome when slurping slimy stuff) playing in the background, all at 1 AM in the morning. go past midnight on a weekday to avoid the wait.

3) koreans bow way too much. my neck hurts. I must have bowed over 200 times and that's lowballing it. I totally believe in the respecting your elders, but Koreans take it to another level. two hands when pouring drinks, don't look at an elder while taking a drink, speak in formal speak when addressing elders (there's even several degrees of formalness), wait until elder has food in mouth before taking your first bite (no exaggeration), bow several times to elder when leaving, elder is always the first to leave... the list goes on. Man it feels good to be back.

on an unrelated tangent,
i thought that the french label rise has a pretty cool look going.
op-art is the new sloppy hand drawing...

It's Jasper again. Password lost, admin in Korea. Anyway, System D128
has been shoveling me youtube videos ever since I posted that 3-6
thing on 6-6-6 and I figured it was high time to post one of em cause
the dude is the best kind of weirdo borderline genius crazy person. Give
him his recognition (and some kind of video deal) please.

This one was created alongside the first hollertronix mix cd, brings
back the mammories:

and I'm feeling this supervillains mega-mix too

but the father's day shit? I love me some Dead Alive and Silent Night Deadly Night type stuff, but I had to draw the line.

Oh man, when it gets real hot n' nasty here in NY, I fiend for these types of cool treats that are found at Jollibee's back Cali. Where else can you get all kinds of dope filipino deserts, sweet spaghetti with spam bits, and fried chicken all in the same place?

Hot Dog and Beer day is officially over, back to work. This just in from Lemon-Red: Kobayashi rules Coney Island. Mofo beat his own world record with 53 3/4 dogs. Snackmaster will get him next year.

yes, I am reporting from the motherland.
perfect timing to avoid the brown pipe episode, have fun with that stony.
anyway, it's been a whirlwind of incessant bowing and stereotypical asian behavoir so far...

yes, koreans love beauty photos. there's studios all over place.

P1010037_1.jpg
someone made me do it.

P1010076.jpg
yes, koreans love karoake, it's no joke here. there's practically one no-rae bang per block in the places where the young kids hang out. these people are getting (k)runk. I sang GNR "patience," one of the best and easiest songs to master.

P1010090.jpg
at the no-rae bang, met my good friend Jung who moved back to Seoul from NYC. using his elder status, he made me chug multiple pints culminating in chugging an entire pitcher to cap off the night. I blew fatty steak, garlic chunks, intestines, and stomach lining (not mine, that was my dinner). Despite his behavoir, Jung is flying to Rotterdam on Wednesday, he's working on designing a building with Rem Koolhaus. What a weirdo.

P1010095.jpg
the food is incredible here. I've had some of the best food I've ever had (awesome kalbi tang, a beef soup cooked for hours), plus some of the craziest food I've ever had (cow intestine grilled on charcoal right in front of me). i promise more pictures, but here's a picture of some street food to keep you occupied...

P1010093.jpg
the only non-stereotypical photo of the lot, I found this underground shopping mall that had about a dozen used record stores. didn't really have time to dig, will go back later...

anyway, I'm really feeling this trip. While y'all eat burgers and watch tv, there's some real different shit going on in the world. After watching a CNN special on Moombai (spelling?) in my hotel room, I might have to go there next.

HAPPY MONDAY.
We finally have our equivalent to Vice's "gross jar". Last friday, just as Snackmaster and I were about to clock out for the weekend, I see Tony running out the back warehouse yelling for help due to a broken sewage pipe in the ceiling. Products were moved to avoid the nasty spillage, cockroaches came out of hiding attracted to the vile stench, and were smacked by a waiting Tony, to be crushed by Snack's clumsy feet, cause those buggers are fast. When Johnny the janitor was alerted, all he said was, "Yup, that's the sewage line." As for the logs, he said,"They're just passing along".
