DJ DUSK (1974-2006) R.I.P. HOMIE... We were just becoming good friends, I can't believe you left us. You looked out for me harder than anyone else since I moved to LA. Your music & parties were beyond almost everything else I experienced since I moved here, but your friendship and spirit will be missed the most. we miss you already...

I have since moved to NYC, and for some narcissistic reason, I can't ignore this storied franchise. I still find myself tuning into SoCal sports talk radio shows to keep tabs on everyone's favourite Southern California organized sports team. Only because I thought the Laker's were going to be bad this year, and I can finally get a chuckle at the whole situation (everyone knew they would stink last year, so that doesn't count). Well, the joke is on me... and I can not believe what I'm about to say; Steve Nash will be named MVP for the second year in a row. When any basketball enthusiast knows Kobe is most deserving (scoring leader, 81pts in 3 quarters, blah). Personally, if I had a vote, it would go to Kobe first, LeBron gets second and Nash somewhere down the line. It's an understatement to say the team around Kobe is awful... Luke Walton? Yet, Kobe has the Lakers sitting at the 7th seed in the West... Smush Parker? In other words, Kobe got screwed... Devon George? And tonight, when he faces Nash, I'm sure he is not going to do anything crazy to prove anyone wrong, especially the MVP voters... Chris Mihm? My "bold" Game 2 prediction: Kobe drops 45+ P.S. Regarding Coach Of The Year honors. Don't get me wrong, Little General is a great coach, but for the 2006 season, he is not deserving of Coach Of The Year status when Allie McDunleavy's father got the Clippers in the playoffs?! Yes, I said Clippers and Playoffs in the same breathe. How great would it be to see both L.A. teams matched up in round 2?

I'm going on record as saying it: best movie ever. Here's what instantly sells me on any narrative: time travel, dinosaurs, submarines, and I have a soft spot for those "reality is not really reality" movies that were popular for like one summer. That being said, Crimson Tide is so crushingly good I recently bought it on DVD just to show it to 2 friends who had never seen it. Denzel pretty much comes into his own as the indignantly articulate, incidentally black guy who has to use his booksmarts to overcome prejudices people have against him. Gene Hackman also comes into his own as the narrow-minded, mega-intense older guy who terrifies people when he loses his cool and screams (slash puts a gun to Petty Officer Hillare's expressionless head). I dunno what it is, I get a big kick out of people yelling at each other in curt military tones, a la Or "Stand down soldier, that is a DIRECT ORDER! (about as explicitly intense as it gets in the army world I imagine)" Plus in any submarine movie there's always that part where one section of the sub gets flooded and someone has to lock his friends in the flooding room and watch their faces through the circle window banging on it going "Glub glub glub GLUBBB!!!" and the guy not in the flooding room falls to his knees because he's seen the true horror of war. On a side note, I'm glad to see the blog is getting hatery. I don't want it to become that "digger's forum" where everyone hates on everything mind you, but I have had enough of blogs that're all "this shit is fiery hot bananas right now! Plus, checkout these AWESOME DJs playing at whatever o'clock at Douche Bar on Friday!" BTW, I'm spinning with Deus Ex Michna at Lit the last Friday of May -- details forthcoming. Also, Pete is gay/woefully out of touch. Also, welcome James to the blogging community.

I hate rodents. So does Lloydski. Rats in the subway, trash, whatever. It's a dirty city, no big deal. But when you clean your apartment as infrequently as we do ( we have food leftovers from the SuperBowl in our fridge), sometimes you come across some shit. Drewzy used to exterminate when he was crashing on our couch, but now it's all us. We were just shrieking like little girls. I thought something smelled weird.

So we know office basketball games are cliche and bound to spiral out of control (just ask Pete about the unravelling of his squad last match) but we at Lab HQ haven't played in a while and it's high time. There are some new people in the mix and Liz will document. Maybe we can youtube the highlights. The ugly part is that we're all pretty shitty and everyone is playing really hard. Adult sports are awesome. We trounced the production squad last time even though "the mngmt" got hot from the outer arch. We've got a big void to fill as Young Drewzy is in LA. Anyway, a look at almost all the starters......Sizzle will coach as he has a bum wrist and smokes too many butts. Lloydski declined a photo as he's still getting his "summer body" in order. shipset in all it's faded glory....Rainey, Ak-Boogs, Sizzy, T-Kat, and Old Man Gorgeous. We're working on a full body shot of Dave Pitts.

Yes that's right you worms! Crawl at my feet! Ping-Pong champion number one ovah heah! I'm the fucking King of New Jersey! Yes, yes the rumors are true... after not winning any video game since Megaman 2, I somehow won the Ping Pong Rockstar Games/Turntable Lab championship. Mostly by playing dirty! My strategy for the whole thing was 2-fold: 1. Beat everyone in my division so I could face off against Pete, with whom I've been email trash-talking lately (it was round-robin style, plus Pete's last blog entry about Cut Copy was just embarassing. It was like that Rolling Stone 2 months ago where they're all "TV On The Radio is a great new band no one knows about!" Good thing you have hip interns, Rolling Stone! I think NPR even beat you guys on that one!) 2. Use my man Liu Ping (Previously referred to as "The Avatar of China's Perfect Overarching Rage") and be like the Chinese economy -- UNSTOPPABLE! I am the best. Then afterwards, Lab employees went to Nublu and got punk'd by Nuyorican Soul Poets Cafe rejects. I get it, everyone there, you like Nina Simone!

i don't where the hell i was going with this image, but watching Arsenal play last night has to degree, restored my faith in art and style. watching them work their one touch magic and incredible ball distribution had me yelling out even in non-attacking midfield play. Henry was again untouchable, making that same move on the end-line several times untouched. Is there anyone quicker? Moving away from my style theme, the player of the game had to be Gilberto. That guy completely disrupted Riquelme's game (although his free kicks were pretty incredible) with bullying and fierce challenges. Hleb is quickly becoming one of my favorite Gunners, he's unveiling more and more moves as the season goes on. He's like the equivalent to White Chocolate, but he rarely turns gives the ball away. Villareal is a great team though, an underdog that I would normally be rooting for if Arsenal wasn't still in it. BTW, was it me or was the ref totally biased against Villa? Make sure to check the second leg next week on ESPN. Night games rule. If Barca and Arsenal advance, it might be the most creative final in history.

Holy crap yeah, that was a good time. For those of you who might've been thinking about it, don't even. Woody + The Avatar of China's Perfect Overarching Rage + SNAP: The Power (and Oran "juice" Jones, Ect.) = UNSTOPPABLE. Don't mess around or you will be.....seeerrrvedd????? (ahhh...hahaha....) And for those of you who weren't satisfied with freaky Nepalese baby, go ahead and do a google image search for "harlequin fetus." (P.S.- Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis, out 5.22.06, $39.99. The play is fuckin vehement, and it looks mean like something you haven't seen--unless you PC Game, but this moves better, and it's fun, like a cheetah-with-a-keytar. Apt of Rockstar to hone in on and showcase the capabilities of the next gen consoles here, before looking to something more massive (Midnight Club, Warriors, GTA, ect). And all that. I could say Table Tennis is polished, but really it gleams--yes give me beer and I will apply my vast and unbounded use of the online thesaurus in your favor. Anywise, admirable for what it is. I game so I know--natch.) (Ok I've said my peace, and I'm signing off before I try to make a joke about someone getting Ping-P0WNNED!!!!1!!11!!@!!!) -Tha Prodigy

Sometimes Chuck Klosterman is the worst guy ever, and sometimes he's the best. About 50% of Killing Yourself To Live is worthless navel-gazing and about 50% of it is relatively valid social/musical commentary. Ditto with Sex Drugs & Cocoa Puffs. Every once in a while though, he will hit comic gold.

It's like, Jesus! Good thing I'm crossing the street to avoid the pan-handler/Greenpeace people, only to be deafened by the screeching announcements of keeping my eyes open for suspicous packages. Ah at last, the F train! Now all I have to do is inhale this inescapable stench of urine! I hate you, my own body, for having to breathe in order to stay alive! It's like Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley: not inherently terrible (actually quite good, if you're a pothead high-schooler), but it has become terrible due to the overwhelming tidal wave of douchebags who like it. Johnny Cash and the Pixies have gone the way of the Zep, and now when I see this shirt on anyone, it may as well read "Extreme Right-Wing Republican." Only OMD, "Training Day," and Charles Schultz understand how I truly feel.

I saw this amazing documentary the other night called "Following Sean" about this kid growing up in Haight-Ashbury in the late sixties and how his life and the life of his family has changed over the years. Sort of like Michael Apted's "7Up" but better; more personal, more subtle and really insightful about the way this country has changed since the sixties. It's opening at Cinema Village in NYC on May 3rd - it's the kind of film you REALLY need to see on the big screen so check it out.
